υἱὸς Βοχορεί, ἀνὴρ ὁ Ἰεμενεί. καὶ ἐσάλπισεν τῇ κερατίνῃ καὶ εἶπεν Οὐκ ἔστιν ἡμὶς ἐν Δαυεὶδ οὐδὲ κληρονομία ἡμῖν ἐν τῷ υἱῷ Ἰεσσαί.ἀνὴρ εἰς τὰ σκνώματά σου, Ἰσραήλ.
Now a worthless man named Sheba son of Bichri, a Benjamite, happened to be there, and he blew the ram’s horn and shouted: “We have no share in David, no inheritance in Jesse’s son. Every man to his tent, O Israel!”
καὶ ἀνέβη πᾶς Ἰσραὴλ ἀπὸ ὄπισθεν Δαυεὶδ ὀπίσω Σάβεε υἱοῦ Βοχορεί. καὶ ἀνὴρ Ἰούδα ἐκολλήθη τῷ βασιλεῖ αὐτῶν ἀπὸ τοῦ Ἰορδάνου καὶ ἕως Ἰερουσαλήμ.
So all the men of Israel deserted David to follow Sheba son of Bichri. But the men of Judah stayed by their king all the way from the Jordan to Jerusalem.
Καὶ εἰσῆλθεν Δαυεὶδ εἰς τὸν οἶκον αὐτοῦ εἰς Ἰερουσαλήμ. καὶ ἔλαβεν ὁ βασιλεὺς τὰς δέκα γυναῖκας τὰς παλλακὰς αὐτοπῦ, ἃς ἀφῆκεν Φυλάσσειν τὸν οἶκον, καὶ ἔδωκεν αὐτὰς ἐν οἴκῳ Φυλακῆς, καὶ διέθρεψεν αὐτὰς καξὶ πρὸς αὐτὰας οὐκ εἰσῆλθεν, καὶ ἦσαν συνεχόμεναι ἕως ἡμέρας θανάτου αὐτῶν, χῆραι ζῶσαι.
When David returned to his palace in Jerusalem, he took the ten concubines he had left to take care of the palace, and he placed them in a house under guard. He provided for them, but he no longer slept with them. They were confined until the day of their death, living as widows.
Καὶ εἶπεν ὁ βασιλεὺς πρὸς Ἀμεσσαςί Βόησόν μοι τὸν ἄνδρα Ἰούδα τρεῖς ἡμέρας, σὺ δὲ αὐτοῦ πρὸς Ἀμεσσαεί Βόησόν μοι τὸν ἄνδρα Ἰούδα τρεῖς ἡμέρας, σὺ δὲ αὐτοῦ στῆθι.
Then the king said to Amasa, “Summon the men of Judah to come to me within three days, and be here yourself.”
καὶ ἐπορεύθη Ἀμεσσαεὶ τοῦ βοῆσαι τὸν Ἰούδαν, καὶ ἐχρόνισεν ἀπὸ τοῦ καιροῦ οὗ ἐτάξατο αὐτῷ.
So Amasa went to summon Judah, but he took longer than the time allotted him.
καὶ εἶπεν ; Δαυεὶδ πρὸς Ἀβεισά Νῦν κακοποιήσει ἡμᾶς Σάβεε υἱὸς Βοχορεὶ ὑπὲρ Ἀβεσσαλώμ· καὶ νῦν σὺ λάβε μετὰ σεαυτοῦ τοὺς παῖδας τοῦ κυρίου σου καὶ καταδίωξον ὀπίσω αὐτοῦ, μή ποτε ἑαυτῷ εὕρῃ πόλεις ὀχυρὰς καὶ σκιάσει τοὺς ὀφθαλμοὺς ἡμῶν.
And David said to Abishai, “Now Sheba the son of Bichri will do us (note: Or and snatch away our eyes or and do us serious harm) more harm than Absalom. Take your lord’s servants and pursue him, or he will find fortified cities and elude us.”
καὶ ἐξῆλθεν ὀπίσω αὐτοῦ Ἀβεσςὰ καὶ οἱ ἄνδρες ἰωὰβ καὶ ὁ Χελεθθεὶ καὶ ὁ Φελεθθεὶ καὶ πάντες οἱ δυνατοί, καὶ ἐξῆλθαν ἐξ Ἰερουσαλὴμ διῶξαι ὀπίσω Σάβεε υἱοῦ Βοχορεί.
So Joab’s men, along with the Cherethites, the Pelethites, and all the mighty men, marched out of Jerusalem in pursuit of Sheba son of Bichri.
καὶ αὐτοὶ παρὰ τῷ λίθῳ τῷ μεγάλῳ ἐν Γαβαών, καὶ Ἀμεσσαεὶ ἦλθεν ἔμπροσθεν αὐτῶν· καὶ Ἰωὰβ περιεζωσμένος μανδύαν τὸ ἔνδυμα αὐτοῦ, καὶ ἐπ’ αὐτῷ περιεζωσμένος μάχαιραν ἐζῆλθεν, καὶ αὐτὴ ἐξῆλθεν καὶ ἔπεσεν.
And while they were at the great stone in Gibeon, Amasa joined them. Now Joab was dressed in military attire, with a dagger strapped to his belt. And as he stepped forward, he slipped the dagger from its sheath (note: Literally Now Joab was dressed in military attire, and over it was a belt around his waist with a dagger in its sheath. And as he stepped forward, it fell out.).
καὶ εἶπεν Ἰωὰβ τῷ Ἀμεσσαεί Εἰ ὑγιαίνεις, ἀδελθέ ; καὶ ἐκράτησεν ἡ χεὶρ ἡ δεξιὰ Ἰωὰβ τοῦ πώγωνος Ἀμεσσαεὶ τοῦ καταφιλῆσαι αὐτόν.
“Are you well, my brother?” Joab asked Amasa. And with his right hand Joab grabbed Amasa by the beard to kiss him.
καὶ Ἀμεσσαεὶ οὐκ ἐφυλάξατο τὴν μάχαιραν τὴν ἐν τῇ χριρὶ Ἰωάβ· καὶ ἔπαισεν αὐτὸν ἐν αὐτῇ Ἰωὰβ εἰς τὴν ψόαν, καὶ ἐξεχύθη ἡ κοιλία αὐτοῦ εἰς τὴν γῆν, καὶ οὐκ ἐδευτέρωσεν αὐτῷ, καὶ ἀπέθανεν. καὶ Ἰωὰβ καὶ Ἀβειςὰ ὁ ἀδελφὸς αὐτοῦ ἐδίωζεν ὀπίσω Σάβεε υἱοῦ Βοχορεί.
Amasa was not on guard against the dagger in Joab’s hand, and Joab stabbed him in the stomach and spilled out his intestines on the ground. And Joab did not need to strike him again, for Amasa was dead. Then Joab and his brother Abishai pursued Sheba son of Bichri.
καὶ ἀνὴρ ἔστη ἐπ’ αὐτὸν τῶν παιδαρίων Ἰωὰβ καὶ εἶπεν Τίς ὁ βουλόμενος Ἰωἀβ, καὶ τίς τοῦ Δαυεὶδ ὀπίσω Ἰωάβ;
One of Joab’s young men stood near Amasa and said, “Whoever favors Joab, and whoever is for David, let him follow Joab!”
καὶ Ἀμεσσαεὶ πεφυρμένος ἐν τῷ αἵματι ἐν μέςῳ τῆς τρίβου, καὶ εἶδεν ἀνὴρ ὅτι εἱστήκει πᾶς ὁ λαός · καὶ ἀπέστρεψαν τὸν Ἀμεσσαεὶ ἐκ τῆς τρίβου εἰς ἀγρὸν καὶ ἐπέρριψεν ἐπֹ’ αὐτὸν ἱμάτιον, καθότι εἶδεν πάντα τὸν ἐρχόμενον ἐπ’ αὐτὸν ἑστηκότα.
But Amasa wallowed in his blood in the middle of the road, and when the man saw that all the troops were stopping there, he dragged the body off the road into a field and threw a garment over it.
ἡνίκα δὲ ἔφθασεν ἐκ τῆς τρίβου, παρῆλθεν πᾶς ἀνὴρ Ἰσραὴλ ὀπίσω Ἰωὰβ τοξῦ διῶξαι ὀπίσω Σάβεε υἱοῦ Βοχορεί.
As soon as Amasa’s body was removed from the road, all the men went on with Joab to pursue Sheba son of Bichri.
καὶ διῆλθεν ἐν πάσαις φυλαῖς Ἰσραὴλ εἰς Ἀβὲλ καὶ εἰς Βαιθμαχά, καὶ πάντες ἐν Χαρρεὶ καὶ ἐφεκκλησιάσθησαν · καὶ ἦλθεν κατόπισθεν αὐτοῦ.
Sheba passed through all the tribes of Israel to Abel-beth-maacah and through the entire region of the Berites (note: Hebrew; LXX and Vulgate Bicrites), who gathered together and followed him.
καὶ παρεγενήθηαν καὶ ἐπολιόρκουν ἐπ’ αὐτὸν ἐν Ἀβὲλ τὴν Βαιθμαχά, καὶ ἐξέχεαν πρόσχωμα πρὸς τὴν πόλιν καὶ ἔστη ἐν τῷ προτειχίσματι· καὶ πᾶς ὁ λαὸς ὁ μετὰ Ἰωὰβ ἐνοοῦσαν καταβαλεῖν τὸ τεῖκος·
And Joab’s troops came and besieged Sheba in Abel-beth-maacah and built a siege ramp against the outer rampart of the city. As all the troops with Joab were battering the wall to topple it,
καὶ ἐβόησεν γυνὴ σοξὴ ἐκ τοῦ τειχους καὶ κἶπεν Ἀκούσατε ἀκούσατε,
a wise woman called out from the city, “Listen! Listen! Please tell Joab to come here so that I may speak with him.”
καὶ προσήγγισεν πρὸς αὐτήν, καὶ εἶπεν ἡ γυνή Εἰ σὺ εἶ Ἰωάβ; ὁ δὲ\ εἶπεν Ἐγώ. εἶπεν δὲ αὐτῷ Ἄκουσον τοὺς λόγους τῆς δούλης σου· καὶ εἶπεν Ἰωάβ’ Ἀκούω ἐγώ εἰμι.
When he had come near to her, the woman asked, “Are you Joab?” “I am,” he replied. “Listen to the words of your servant,” she said. “I am listening,” he answered.
καὶ εἶπεν λέγουσα Λόγον ἐλάλησαν ἐν πρώτοις λέγοντες Ἠρωτημένος ἠρωτήθη ἐν τῇ Ἀβὲλ καὶ ἐν Λὰν εἰ ἐξέλιπον ἅ ἔθεντο οἱ πιστοὶ τοῦ Ἰσραήλ· ἐρῶντες ἐπερωτήσουσιν ἔνα ἐν Ἀβὲλ καὶ οὕτως, εἰ ἐξέλιπον.
Then the woman said, “Long ago they used to say, ‘Seek counsel at Abel,’ and that is how disputes were settled.
ἐγώ εἰμι εἰρηνικὰ τῶν στηριγμάτων Ἰσραήλ, σὺ δὲ ζητεῖς θανατῶσαι πόλιν καὶ μητρόπολιν ἐν Ἰσραήλ· ἵνα τί καταποντίζεις κληρονομέαν Κυρίου ;
I am among the peaceable and faithful in Israel, but you are trying to destroy a city that is a mother in Israel. Why would you swallow up the LORD’s inheritance?”
καὶ ἀπεκρίθη Ἰωὰβ καὶ εἶπεν Ἵλεώς μοι ἵλεώς μοι, εἰ καταποντιῶ καὶ εἰ φθερῶ·
“Far be it!” Joab declared. “Far be it from me to swallow up or destroy!
αὐχ οὑτος ὁ λόγος· ὅτι ἀνὴρ ἐξ ὄρους Ἐφράιμ, Σάβεε υἱὸς Βοχορεὶ ἄνομα αὐτοῦ, καὶ ἐπῆρεν τὴν χεῖρα αὐτοῦ ἐπὶ τὸν βασιλέα Δαυείδ. δότε αὐτόν μοι μόνον, καὶ ἀπελεύσομαι ἀπάωνθεν τῆς πόλεως. καὶ εἶπεν η γυνὴ πρὸς Ἰωάβ Ἰδοὺ ἡ κεφαλὴ αὐτοῦ ἱρφήσεται πρὸς σὲ δεὰ τοῦ τείχους.
That is not the case. But a man named Sheba son of Bichri, from the hill country of Ephraim, has lifted up his hand against the king, against David. Deliver him alone, and I will depart from the city.” “Look,” the woman replied, “his head will be thrown to you over the wall.”
καὶ εἰσῆλθεν ἡ γυνὴ πρὸς πάντα τὸν λαόν, καὶ ἐλάλησεν πρὸς πᾶσαν τὴν πόλιν ἐν τῇ σοφίᾳ αὐτῆς· καὶ ἀφεῖλεν τὴν κεφαλὴν Σάβεε υἱοῦ Βοχορεί, καὶ ἀφεῖλεν καὶ ἔβαλεν πρὸς Ἰωάβ. καὶ ἐσάλπισεν ἐν κερατίνῃ, καὶ διεσπάρησαν ἀπὸ τῆς πόλεως ἀπ’ αὐτοῦ ἀνὴρ εἰς τὰ σκηώματα αὐτοῦ· καὶ Ἰωὰβ ἀπέστρεψεν εἰς Ἰερουσαλὴμ πρὸς τὸν βασλέα.
Then the woman went to all the people with her wise counsel, and they cut off the head of Sheba son of Bichri and threw it to Joab. So he blew the ram’s horn and his men dispersed from the city, each to his own home. And Joab returned to the king in Jerusalem.
Καὶ Ἰωὰβ πρὸς πάςῃ τῇ δυνάμει Ἰσραήλ, καὶ Βαναίας υἱὸς Ἀχειλοὺθ ἐπὶ τοῦ Χελεθθεὶ καὶ ἐπὶ τοῦ φελεθθεί,
Now Joab was over the whole army of Israel; Benaiah son of Jehoiada was over the Cherethites and Pelethites;
καὶ Ἀδωνειρὰμ ἐπὶ τοῦ φόπρου, καὶ Ἰωσαφὰθ υἱὸς Ἀχειλοὺθ ἀναμιμνήσκων,
Adoram (note: Adoram is a variant of Adoniram and Hadoram; see 1 Kings 4:6 and 2 Chronicles 10:18.) was in charge of the forced labor; Jehoshaphat son of Ahilud was the recorder;
καὶ Ἰησοῦς ὁ γραμματεύς, καὶ Σαδὼκ καὶ Ἀβιαθὰρ ἱερεῖς,
Sheva (note: Sheva is also called Seraiah, Shisha, and Shavsha; see 2 Samuel 8:17, 1 Kings 4:3, and 1 Chronicles 18:16.) was the scribe; Zadok and Abiathar were priests;
καί γε εἴρας ὁ Ἰαρεὶν ἦν ἑρεὺς τοῦ Δαυείδ.
and Ira the Jairite (note: Hebrew; some LXX manuscripts and Syriac Ithrite; see 2 Samuel 23:38.) was David’s priest.
