Καὶ εἶπον οἱ υἱοὶ τῶν προφητῶν πρὸς Ἐλεισαῖε Ἰδοὺ δὴ ὁ τόπος ἐν ᾧ ἡμεῖς οἰκοῦμεν ἐνώπιόν σου στενὸς ἀφ’ ἡμῶν·
Now the sons of the prophets said to Elisha, “Please take note that the place where we meet with you is too small for us.
πορευθῶμεν δὴ ἕως τοῦ Ἰορδάνου καὶ λάβωμεν ἐκεῖθεν ἀνὴρ εἷς δοκὸν μίαν, καὶ ποιήσωμεν ἑαυτοῖς ἐκεῖ τοῦ οἰκεῖν ἐκεῖ. καὶ εἶπεν Δεῦτε.
Please let us go to the Jordan, where each of us can get a log so we can build ourselves a place to live there.” “Go,” said Elisha.
καὶ εἶπεν ὁ εἷς Ἐπιεικῶς, δεῦρο μετὰ τῶν δούλων σου· καὶ εἶπεν ’Εγὼ πορεύσομαι.
Then one of them said, “Please come with your servants.” “I will come,” he replied.
καὶ ἐπορεύθη μετ’ αὐτῶν, καὶ ἦλθον εἰς τὸν Ἰορδάνην καὶ ἔτεμνον τὰ ξύλα.
So Elisha went with them, and when they came to the Jordan, they began to cut down some trees.
καὶ ἰδοὺ ὁ εἷς καταβάλλων τὴν δοκόν, καὶ τὸ σιδήριον ἐξέπεσεν εἰς τὸ ὕδωρ· καὶ ἐβόησεν Ὤ, κύριε· καὶ αὐτὸ κεκρυμμένον .
As one of them was cutting down a tree, the iron axe head fell into the water. “Oh, my master,” he cried out, “it was borrowed!”
καὶ εἶπεν ὁ ἄνθρωπος τοῦ θεοῦ Ποῦ ἔπεσεν ; καὶ ἔδειξεν αὐτῶ τὸν τόπον· καὶ ἀπέκνισεν ξύλον καὶ ἔρριψεν ἐκεῖ, καὶ καὶ ἐπεπόλασεν τὸ σιδήριον.
“Where did it fall?” asked the man of God. And when he showed him the place, the man of God cut a stick, threw it there, and made the iron float.
καὶ εἴρηκεν Ὕψωσον σαυτῷ· καὶ ἐξέτεινεν τὴν χεῖρα καὶ ἔλαβεν αὐτό.
“Lift it out,” he said, and the man reached out his hand and took it.
Καὶ βασιλεὺς Συρίας ἦν πολεμῶν ἐν Ἰσραήλ, καὶ ἐβουλεύσατο πρὸς τοὺς παῖδας αὐτοῦ λέγων Εἰς τὸν τόπον τόνδε τινὰ ἐ παρεμβαλῶ.
Now the king of Aram was at war against Israel. After consulting with his servants, he said, “My camp will be in such and such a place.”
καὶ ἀπέστειλεν Ἐλεισαῖε πρὸς βασιλέα Ἰσραὴλ Φύλαξαι μὴ παρελθεῖν ἐν τῷ τόπῳ τούτῳ, ὄτι ἐκεῖ Συρία
Then the man of God sent word to the king of Israel: “Be careful not to pass by this place, for the Arameans are going down there.”
καὶ ἀπέστειλεν ὁ βασιλεὺς Ἰσραὴλ εἰς τὸν τόπον ὃν εἶπεν αὐτῶ Ἐλεισαῖε, καὶ ἐφυλάξατο ἐκεῖθεν οὐ μίαν οὐδὲ δύο.
So the king of Israel sent word to the place the man of God had pointed out. Time and again Elisha warned the king, so that he was on his guard in such places.
καὶ ιλέως Συρίας περὶ τοῦ λόγου τούτου, καὶ ἐ αὐτοῦ καὶ εἶπεν πρὸς αὐτούς Οὐκ ἀναγγελεῖτέ μοι τίς δωσίν με βασιλεῖ Ἰσραήλ;
For this reason the king of Aram became enraged and called his servants to demand of them, “Tell me, which one of us is on the side of the king of Israel?”
καὶ εἶπεν εἷς τῶν παίδων αὐτοῦ κύριε μου βασιλεῦ, ὄτι Ἐλεισαῖε ὁ προφήτης ὁ ἐν Ἰσραὴλ ἀναγγέλλει τῷ βασιλεῖ Ἰσραὴλ πάντας τοὺς λόγους οὺς ἐὰν λαλήσῃς ἐν τῷ ταμείῶ τοῦ κοιτῶνός σου.
But one of his servants replied, “No one, my lord the king. For Elisha, the prophet in Israel, tells the king of Israel the very words you speak in your bedroom.”
καὶ ἐἶπεν Δεῦτε ἴδετε ποῦ οὗτος, κα ἀποστείλας λήμψομαι αὐτόν· καὶ ἀνήγγειλαν αὐτῷ λέγοντες Ἰδοὺ ἐν Δωθάειμ.
So the king said, “Go and see where he is, that I may send men to capture him.” On receiving the report, “Elisha is in Dothan,”
καὶ ἀπέστειλεν ἐκεὶ ἴππον καὶ ἅρμα κα δύναμιν βαρεῖαν, καὶ ἦλθον νυκτὸς καὶ περιεκύκλωσαν τὴν πόλιν.
the king of Aram sent horses, chariots, and a great army. They went there by night and surrounded the city.
καὶ ὤρθρισεν ὁ λειτουργὸς Ἐλεισαῖε ἀναστῆναι κα ἐξῆλθεν, καὶ ἰδοὺ κυκλοῦσα τὴν πόλιν καὶ ἴππος καὶ ἄρμα· καὶ εἰπεν τὸ πρὸς αὐτόν Ὥ, κύριε· πῶς ποιήσωμεν ;
When the servant of the man of God got up and went out early in the morning, behold, an army with horses and chariots had surrounded the city. So he asked Elisha, “Oh, my master, what are we to do?”
καὶ εἶπεν Ἐλεισαῖε Μὴ φοβοῦ, ὄτι πλείους οἱ μεθ’ ἡμῶν ὑπὲρ τοὺς μετ’ αὐτῶν.
“Do not be afraid,” Elisha answered, “for those who are with us are more than those who are with them.”
καὶ προσεύξατο Ἐλεισαῖε καὶ εἶπεν κύριε, διάνοιξον τοὺς ὀφθαλμοὺς τοῦ παιδαρίου καὶ ἰδέτω· καὶ διήνοιξεν Κύριος τοὺς ὀφθαλμοὺς αὐτοῦ, καὶ εἶδεν· καὶ ἰδοὺ τὸ ὄρος πλῆρες ἵππων, καὶ ἄρμα πυρὸς περικύκλῳ Ἐλεισαῖε.
Then Elisha prayed, “O LORD, please open his eyes that he may see.” And the LORD opened the eyes of the young man, and he saw that the hills were full of horses and chariots of fire all around Elisha.
καὶ κατέβησαν πρὸς αὐτόν· κα προσηύξατο πρὸς Κύριον καὶ εἶπεν Πάταξον δὴ τοῦτο τὸ ἔθνος ἀορασίᾳ· καὶ ἐπάταξεν αὐτοὺς ἀορασίᾳ κατὰ τὸ ῥῆμα Ἐλεισαῖε.
As the Arameans came down against him, Elisha prayed to the LORD, “Please strike these people with blindness.” So He struck them with blindness, according to the word of Elisha.
καὶ εἰπεν πρὸς αὐτοὺς Ἐλεισαῖε Οὐκ αὕτη ἡ πόλις καὶ αὕτη ἡ ὁδός· δεῦτε ὀπίσω μου, καὶ ἄξω ὑμᾶς πρὸς τὸν ἄνδερα ὃν ζητεῖτε· κα ἀπήγαγεν αὐτοὺς πρὸς Σαμάρειαν.
And Elisha told them, “This is not the way, and this is not the city. Follow me, and I will take you to the man you are seeking.” And he led them to Samaria.
καὶ ἐγένετο ὡς εἰσῆλθον εἰς Σαμάρειαν, καὶ εἰπεν Ἐλεισαῖε Ἄνοιξον δή, Κύριε, τοὺς ὀφθαλμοὺς αὐτῶν καὶ ἰδέτωτσαν· καὶ διήνοιξεν τοὺς ὀφθαλμοὺς αὐτῶν, καὶ εἶδον· καὶ ἰδοὺ ἦσαν ἐν αμαρείας.
When they had entered Samaria, Elisha said, “O LORD, open the eyes of these men that they may see.” Then the LORD opened their eyes, and they looked around and discovered that they were in Samaria.
καὶ εἶπεν ὁ βασιλεὺς Ἰσραήλ, ὡς εἶδεν αὐτούς Εἰ ς πατάξω, πάτερ,.
And when the king of Israel saw them, he asked Elisha, “My father, shall I kill them? Shall I kill them?”
καὶ εἶπεν Οὑ πατάξεις, εἰ μὴ οὑς ῄψμαλώἐν ῥομφαίᾳ σου καὶ τόξῳ σου σὺ τύπτες· παράθες ἄρτους καὶ ὕδωρ ἐνώπιον αὐτῶν, καὶ φαγέτωσαν καὶ πιέτωσαν, καὶ ἀπελθέτωσαν πρὸς τὸν κύριον αὐτῶν.
“Do not kill them,” he replied. “Would you kill those you have captured with your own sword or bow? Set food and water before them, that they may eat and drink and then return to their master.”
καὶ παρέθηκεν αὐτοῖς παράθεσιν μεγάλην, καὶ ἔφαγον καὶ ἔπιον· καὶ ἀπέστειλεν αὐτοὺς πρὸς τὸν κύριον αὐτῶν. καὶ οὐ προσέθεντο ἔτι μονόζωνοι Συρίας τοῦ ἐλθεῖν εἰς γῆν Ἰσραήλ.
So the king prepared a great feast for them, and after they had finished eating and drinking, he sent them away, and they returned to their master. And the Aramean raiders did not come into the land of Israel again.
ἐγένετο μετὰ ταῦτα καὶ ἤθροισεν υἱὸς Ἁδὲρ βασιλεὺς Συρίας πᾶσαν τὴν παρεμβολὴν αὐτοῦ κα ἀνέβη, κα περιεΣαμάρειαν.
Some time later, Ben-hadad king of Aram assembled his entire army and marched up to besiege Samaria.
καὶ ἐγένετο λιμὸς μέγας ἐν Σαμαρείᾳ, κα ἰδοὺ ηντο ἐπ’ αὐτὴν ἕως οὗ ἐγενήθη κεφαλὴ ὄνου πεντήκοντα ἀργυρίου καὶ τέταρτον τοῦ κάβου κόπρου περιστερῶν πέντε ἀργυρίου.
So there was a great famine in Samaria. Indeed, they besieged the city so long that a donkey’s head sold for eighty shekels (note: 5 shekels is approximately 2 ounces or 57 grams of silver.)ss="annot-tooltip" tabindex="0" data-tooltip="80 shekels is approximately 2 pounds or 907.2 grams of silver." title="80 shekels is approximately 2 pounds or 907.2 grams of silver.">of silver (note: 80 shekels is approximately 2 pounds or 907.2 grams of silver.), and a quarter cab of dove’s dung (note: Or a quarter cab of seed pods; that is, approximately 0.28 dry quarts or 0.31 liters) sold for five shekels of silver.
καὶ ἦν ὁ βασιλεὺς Ἰσραὴλ διαπορευόμενος ἐπὶ τοῦ τείχους, καὶ γυνὴ ἐβόησεν πρὸς αὐτὸν λέγουσα Σῶσον, κύριε βασιλεῦ.
As the king of Israel was passing by on the wall, a woman cried out to him, “Help me, my lord the king!”
καὶ εἶπεν αὐτῇ Μή σε σώσαι Κύριος· πόθεν σώσω σε; μὴ ἀπὸ ἄλωνος ἢ ἀπὸ ληνοῦ;
He answered, “If the LORD does not help you, where can I find help for you? From the threshing floor or the winepress?”
καὶ εἶπεν αὐτῇ ὁ βασιλεύς Τί εστιν σοι ; καὶ εἶπεν ἡ Αὕτη εἶπεν πρὸς μέ Δὸς τὸν υἱόν σου, καὶ φαγόμεθα αὐτὸν καὶ τὸν υἱόν μου, καὶ φαγόμεθα αὐτὸν αὔριον.
Then the king asked her, “What is the matter?” And she answered, “This woman said to me, ‘Give up your son, that we may eat him, and tomorrow we will eat my son.’
καὶ ἡψήσαμεν τὸν υἱόν μου καὶ ἐφάγομεν αὐτόν, καὶ εἶπον πρὸς αὐτὴν τῇ ἡμέρᾳ τῇ δευτέρᾳ Δὸς τὸν υἱόν σου καὶ φάγωμεν αὐτόν· καὶ ἔκρυψεν τὸν υἱὸν αὐτῆς.
So we boiled my son and ate him, and the next day I said to her, ‘Give up your son, that we may eat him.’ But she had hidden her son.”
καὶ ἐγένετο ὡς ἤκουσεν ὁ βασιλεὺς τοὺς λόγους τῆς γυναικός, διέρρηξεν τὰ ἱμάτια αὐτοῦ, καὶ αὐτὸς διεπορεύετο ἐπὶ τοῦ τείχους, καὶ εἶδεν ὁ λαὸς τὸν σάκκον ἐπὶ τῆς σαρκὸς αὐτοῦ ἔσωθεν
When the king heard the words of the woman, he tore his clothes. And as he passed by on the wall, the people saw the sackcloth under his clothes next to his skin.
καὶ εἶπεν Τάδε ποιήσαι μοι ὁ θεὸς καὶ τάδε προσθείη, εἰ στήσεται ἢ κεφαλὴ Ἐλεισαῖε ἐπ’ αὐτῷ σήμερον.
He announced, “May God punish me, and ever so severely, if the head of Elisha son of Shaphat remains on his shoulders through this day!”
καὶ Ἐλεισαῖε ἐκάθητο ἐν τῷ οἴκῳ αὐτοῦ, καὶ οἱ πρεσβύτεροι ἐκάθηντο μετ’ αὐτοῦ· καὶ ἀπέστειλεν ἄνδρα πρὸ προσώπου αὐτοῦ πρὶν ἐλθεῖν τὸν ἄγγελον πρὸς αὐτόν· καὶ εἶπεν πρὸς τοὺς πρεσβυτέρους Εἰ ᾔδειτε ὅτι ἀπέστειλεν ὁ υἱὸς τοῦ φονευτοῦ ἀφελεῖν τὴν κεφαλήν μου; ἴδετε ὡς ἄν ἔλθῃ ὁ ἄγγελος, ἀποκλείσατε τὴν θύραν καὶ παραθλίψατε αὐτὸν ἐν τῇ θύρᾳ· οὐχὶ φωνὴ τῶν ποδῶν τοῦ κυρίου αὐτοῦ κατόπισθεν αὐτοῦ ;
Now Elisha was sitting in his house, and the elders were sitting with him. The king sent a messenger ahead, but before he arrived, Elisha said to the elders, “Do you see how this murderer has sent someone to cut off my head? Look, when the messenger comes, shut the door to keep him out. Is not the sound of his master’s footsteps behind him?”
ἔτι αὐτοῦ λαλοῦντος μετ’ αὐτῶν καὶ ἰδοὺ ἄγγελος κατέβη πρὸς αὐτὸν καὶ εἶπεν Ἰδοὺ αὕτη ἡ κακία παρὰ Κυρίου· τί ὑπομείνω τῷ κυρίῳ ἔτι;
While Elisha was still speaking with them, the messenger came down to him. And the king said, “This calamity is from the LORD. Why should I wait for the LORD any longer?”
