Καὶ Ναιμὰν ὁ ἅρχων τῆς δυνάμεως Συρίας ἦν ἀνὴρ μέγας ἐνώπιον τοῦ κυρίου αὐτοῦ καὶ τεθαυμασμένος προσώπῳ, ὅτι ἐν αὐτῷ ἔδωκεν Κύριος σωτηρίαν Συρίᾳ· καὶ ὁ ἀνὴρ ἦν δυνατὸς ἰσχύι, λελεπρωμένος.
Now Naaman, the commander of the army of the king of Aram, was a great man in his master’s sight and highly regarded, for through him the LORD had given victory to Aram. And he was a mighty man of valor, but he was a leper.
καὶ Συρία ἐξῆλθον μονόζωνοι καὶ ᾐχμαλώτευσαν ἐκ γῆς Ἰσραὴλ νεάνιδα μικράν, καὶ ἦν ἐνώπιον τῆς γυναικὸς Ναιμάν.
At this time the Arameans had gone out in bands and had taken a young girl from the land of Israel, and she was serving Naaman’s wife.
ἡ δὲ εἶπεν τῇ κυρίᾳ αὐτῆς Ὅφελον ὁ κύριός μου ἐνώπιον τοῦ προφήτου τοῦ θεοῦ τοῦ ἐν Σαμαρείᾳ, τότε ἀποσυνάξει αὐτὸν ἀπὸ τῆς λέπρας αὐτοῦ.
She said to her mistress, “If only my master would go to the prophet who is in Samaria, he would cure him of his leprosy.”
καὶ εἰσῆλθεν καὶ ἀπήγγειλεν τῷ κυρίῳ ἑαυτῆς καὶ εἶπεν Οὔτως καὶ οὕτως ἐλά.λησεν ἡ νεᾶνις ἡ ἐκ γῆς Ἰσραήλ.
And Naaman went and told his master what the girl from the land of Israel had said.
καὶ εἶπεν βασιλεὺς Συρίας πρὸς Ναιμάν Δεῦρο Δεῦρο καὶ ἐξαποστελῶ βιβλίον πρὸς βασιλέα Ἰσραήλ. καὶ ἐπορεύθη καὶ ἔλαβεν ἐν τῇ χειρὶ αὐτοῦ δέκα τάλαντα ἀργυρίου καὶ ἑξακισχιλίους χρυσοῦς καὶ δέκα ἀλλασσομένας στολάς.
“Go now,” said the king of Aram, “and I will send you with a letter to the king of Israel.” So Naaman departed, taking with him ten talents of silver (note: 10 talents is approximately 754 pounds or 342 kilograms of silver.), six thousand shekels of gold (note: 6,000 shekels is approximately 150.8 pounds or 68.4 kilograms of gold.), and ten sets of clothing.
καὶ ἤνεγκεν τὸ βιβλίον πρὸς τὸν βασιλέα Ἰ λέγων Καὶ νῦν ὡς ἄν ἔλθῃ τὸ βιβλίον τοῦτο πρὸς σέ, ἰδο πρὸς σὲ Ναιμὰν τὸν δοῦλόν μου, καὶ ἀποσυνάξεις αὐτὸν ἀπὸ τῆς λέπρας αὐτοῦ.
And the letter that he took to the king of Israel stated: “With this letter I am sending my servant Naaman, so that you may cure him of his leprosy.”
καὶ ἐγένετο ὡς ἀνέγνω βασιλεὺς Ἰσραὴλ τὸ βιβλίον, διέρρηξεν τὰ ἱμάτια αὐτοῦ καὶ εἶπεν ’Ο θεὸς ἐγὼ τοῦ θανατῶσαι καὶ ζωοποιῆσαι, ὅτι οὖτος ἀποστέλλει πρὸς μὲ ἀποσυνάξαι ἄνδρα ἀπὸ τῆς λέπρας αὐτοῦ; ὅτι πλὴν γνῶτε δὴ καὶ ἴδετε ὄτι προφασίζεται οὗτός μοι.
When the king of Israel read the letter, he tore his clothes and asked, “Am I God, killing and giving life, that this man expects me to cure a leper? Surely you can see that he is seeking a quarrel with me!”
καὶ ἐγένετο ὡς ἤκουσεν Ἐλεισαῖε ὄτι διέρρηξεν ὁ βασιλεὺς Ἰσραὴλ τὰ ἱμάτια ἑαυτοῦ, καὶ ἀπέστειλεν πρὸς πρὸς βασιλέα Ἰσραὴλ λέγων Ἴνα τί διέρρηξας τὰ ἱμάτιά σου; ἐλθέτω δὴ πρὸς μὲ Ναμὰν καὶ γνώτω ὄτι έστιν προφήτης ἐν Ἰσραήλ.
Now when Elisha the man of God heard that the king of Israel had torn his clothes, he sent a message to the king: “Why have you torn your clothes? Please let the man come to me, and he will know that there is a prophet in Israel.”
καὶ ἦλθεν Ναιμὰν ἐν ἴππῳ καὶ ἄρματι, καὶ ἔστη ἐπὶ θύρας οἴκου Ἐλεισαἴε.
So Naaman came with his horses and chariots and stood at the door of Elisha’s house.
καὶ ἀπέστειλεν Ἐλεισαῖε ἄγγελον πρὸς αὐτὸν λέγων Πορευθεὶς λοῦσαι ἑπτάκις ἐν τῷ Ἰορδάνῃ, καὶ ἐπιστρέψει ἢ σάρξ σού σοι καὶ καθαρισθήσῃ.
Then Elisha sent him a messenger, who said, “Go and wash yourself seven times in the Jordan, and your flesh will be restored, and you will be clean.”
καὶ ἐθυμώθη Ναιμάν, καὶ ἀπῆλθεν καὶ εἶπεν Ἰδοὺ εἶπον Πρὸς μὲ πάντως ἐξελεύσεται καὶ ἐπικαλέσεται ἐν ὀνόματι θεοῦ αὐτοῦ, καὶ ἐπιθήσει τὴν χεῖρα αὐτοῦ ἐπὶ τὸν τόπον, καὶ ἀποσυνάξει τὸ λεπρόν.
But Naaman went away angry, saying, “I thought that he would surely come out, stand and call on the name of the LORD his God, and wave his hand over the spot to cure my leprosy.
οὐχὶ ἀγαθὸς Ἀβανὰ καὶ Ἀφαρξὰ ποταμοὶ Δαμασκοῦ ὑπὲρ πάντα τὰ ὔδατα Ἰσραήλ ; οὐχὶ πορευθεὶς λούσομαι ἐν αὐτοῖς καὶ καθαρισθήσομαι ; καὶ ἐξέκλινεν καὶ ἀπῆλθεν ἐν θυμῷ.
Are not the Abanah and Pharpar, the rivers of Damascus, better than all the waters of Israel? Could I not have washed in them and been cleansed?” So he turned and went away in a rage.
καὶ ἤγγισαν οἱ παῖδες αὐτοῦ καὶ ἐλάλησαν πρὸς αὐτόν Μέγαν λόγον ἐλάλησεν ὁ προφήτης πρὸς σέ, οὐχὶ ποιήσεις ; καὶ ὅτι εἶπεν πρὸς σέ λοῦσαι καὶ καθαρίσθητι.
Naaman’s servants, however, approached him and said, “My father, if the prophet had told you to do some great thing, would you not have done it? How much more, then, when he tells you, ‘Wash and be cleansed’?”
καὶ κατέβη Ναιμὰν καὶ ἐβαπτίσατο ἐν τῷ Ἰορδάνῃ ἑπτάκι κατὰ τὸ ῥῆμα Ἐλεισαῖε· καὶ ἐπέστρεψεν ἡ σὰρξ αὐτοῦ ὡς σὰρξ παιδαρίου μικροῦ, καὶ ἐκαθαρίσθη.
So Naaman went down and dipped himself in the Jordan seven times, according to the word of the man of God, and his flesh was restored and became like that of a little child, and he was clean.
καὶ ἐπέεν στρεψεν πρὸς Ἐλεισαῖε αὐτὸς καὶ πᾶσα ἡ παρεμβολὴ αὐτοῦ, κοὶ ἦλθεν καὶ ἔστη καὶ εἶπεν Ἰδοὺ ἔγνωκα ὄτι οὐκ ἔστιν θεὸς ἐν πάσῃ τῇ γῇ ὄτι ἀλλ’ ἢ ἐν τῷ Ἰσραήλ· καὶ νῦν λάβε τὴν εὐλογίαν παρὰ τοῦ δούλου σου.
Then Naaman and all his attendants went back to the man of God, stood before him, and declared, “Now I know for sure that there is no God in all the earth except in Israel. So please accept a gift from your servant.”
καὶ εἶπεν Ἐλεσαῖε ῇ Κύριος ᾦ παρέστην ἐνώπιον αὐτοῦ, εἰ λήμψομαι· καὶ παρεβιάσατο αὐτὸν λαβεῖν, καὶ ἠπείθησεν.
But Elisha replied, “As surely as the LORD lives, before whom I stand, I will not accept it.” And although Naaman urged him to accept it, he refused.
καὶ εἶπεν Ναιμάν Καὶ εἰ μή, δοθήτω δὴ τῷ δούλῳ σου γόπμορ, ζεύγη ἡμιόνων, ὅτι οὐ ποιήσει ἔτι ὁ δοῦλός σου ὁλοκαύτωμα καὶ θυσίασμα θεοῖς ἑτέροις ἀλλ’ ἢ τῷ κυρίῳ.
“If you will not,” said Naaman, “please let me, your servant, be given as much soil as a pair of mules can carry. For your servant will never again make a burnt offering or a sacrifice to any other god but the LORD.
τῷ ῥήματι τούτῳ καὶ ἱλάσεται Κύριος τῷ δούλῳ σου, ἐν τῷ εἰσπορεύεσθαι τὸν κύριόν μου εἰς οἶκον Ρεμμὰν προσκυνῆσαι ἐκεῖ· καὶ αὐτὸς ἐπαναπαύσεται ἐπὶ τῆς χειρός μου, καὶ προσκυνήσω ἐν οἴκῳ Ῥεμμὰν ἐν τῷ αὐτὸν ἐν οἴκῳ Ῥεμμάν· καὶ ἱλασεται δὴ Κύριος τῷ δούλῳ σου ε λόγῳ τούτῳ.
Yet may the LORD forgive your servant this one thing: When my master goes into the temple of Rimmon to worship there, and he leans on my arm, and I bow down in the temple of Rimmon, may the LORD forgive your servant in this matter.”
καὶ εἶπεν Ἐλεισαῖε πρὸς Ναιμάν Δεῦρο εἰς εἰρήνην· καὶ ἀπῆλθεν παρ’ αὐτοῦ εἰς δεβραθὰ τῆς γῆς.
“Go in peace,” said Elisha. But after Naaman had traveled a short distance,
Καὶ εἶπεν Γιεζεὶ τὸ παιδάριον Ἐλεισαῖε Ἰδοὺ ἐφείσατο ὁ κύριός μου τοῦ τοῦ Σύρου τούτου, τοῦ μὴ λαβεῖν ἐκ χειρὸς αὐτοῦ ἃ ἐνήνο Κύριος ὄτι εἰ μὴ δραμοῦμαι ὀπίσω αὐτοῦ καὶ λήμψομαι παρ τι.
Gehazi, the servant of Elisha the man of God, said, “Look, my master has spared this Aramean, Naaman, by not accepting what he brought. As surely as the LORD lives, I will run after him and get something from him.”
καὶ ἐδίωξε Γιεζεὶ ὀπίσω τοῦ Ναιμάν· καὶ εἶδεν αὐτὸν Ναιμὰν τρέχοντα ὀπίσω αὐτοῦ, καὶ ἐπέστρεψεν ἀπὸ τοῦ ἅρματος εἰς ἀπαντὴν αὐτοῦ.
So Gehazi pursued Naaman. And when Naaman saw him running toward him, he got down from the chariot to meet him and asked, “Is everything all right?”
καὶ εἶπεν Εἰρήνη· ὁ κύριός μου ἀπέστειλέν με λέγων ’ιδοὺ νῦν ἦλθον πρὸς μὲ δύο παιδάρια ἐξ ὄρους Ἐφράιμ ἀπὸ τῶν υἱῶν τῶν προφητῶν· δὸς δὴ αὐτοῖς τάλαντον ἀργυρίου καὶ δύο ἀλλασσομένας στολάς.
“Everything is all right,” Gehazi replied. “My master has sent me to say, ‘Look, two young men from the sons of the prophets have just now come to me from the hill country of Ephraim. Please give them a talent of silver (note: A talent is approximately 75.4 pounds or 34.2 kilograms of silver.) and two sets of clothing.’”
καὶ εἶπεν Ναιμάν Λάβε διτάλαντον ἀργυρίου· καὶ ἔλαβεν ἐν δυσὶ θυλάκοις, καὶ δύο ἀλλασσομένας στολάς· καὶ ἔδωκεν ἐπὶ δύο παιδάρια αύτοῦ, καὶ ᾖρον ἔμπροσθεν αὐτοῦ.
But Naaman insisted, “Please, take two talents.” And he urged Gehazi to accept them. Then he tied up two talents of silver in two bags along with two sets of clothing and gave them to two of his servants, who carried them ahead of Gehazi.
καὶ ἦλθον εἰς τὸ σκοτεινόν, καὶ ἔλαβεν ἐκ τῶν χειρῶν αὐτῶν καὶ παρέθετο ἐν οἴκῳ, καὶ ἐξαπέστειλεν τοὺς ἄνδρας.
When Gehazi came to the hill, he took the gifts from the servants and stored them in the house. Then he dismissed the men, and they departed.
καὶ αὐτὸς εἰσῆλθεν καὶ παρειστήκει πρὸς τὸν κύριον αὐτοῦ· καὶ εἶπεν πρὸς αὐτὸν Ἐλεισαῖε Πόθεν Γιεζεί ; καὶ εἶπεν Γιεζεί Οὐ πεπόρευται ὁ δοῦλός σου ἔνθα καὶ ἔνθα.
When Gehazi went in and stood before his master, Elisha asked him, “Gehazi, where have you been?” “Your servant did not go anywhere,” he replied.
καὶ εἶπεν πρὸς αὐτὸν Ἐλεισαῖε Οὐχὶ ἡ καρδία ἐπορεύθη μετὰ σοῦ ὄτε ἐπέστρεψεν ὁ ἀνὴρ ἀπὸ τοῦ ἅρματος εἰς συναντήν σοι; καὶ νῦν ἔλαβες τὸ ἀργύριον, καὶ νῦν ἔλαβες τὰ ἱμάτια καὶ ἐλαιῶνας καὶ ἀμπελῶνας καὶ πρόβατα καὶ βόας καὶ παῖδας καὶ παιδίσκας·
But Elisha questioned him, “Did not my spirit go with you when the man got down from his chariot to meet you? Is this the time to accept money and clothing, olive groves and vineyards, sheep and oxen, menservants and maidservants?
καὶ ἡ λέπρα Ναιμὰν κολληθήσεται ἐν σοὶ καὶ ἐν τῷ ί σου εἰς τὸν αἰῶνα. καὶ ἐξῆλθεν ἐκ προσώπου αὐτοῦ λελεωσει χιων.
Therefore, the leprosy of Naaman will cling to you and your descendants forever!” And as Gehazi left his presence, he was leprous—as white as snow.
