Καὶ Ἰωρὰμ υἱὸς Ἀχαὰβ ἐβασίλευσεν ἐν Ἰσραὴλ ἐν ἔτει ὀκτωκαιδεκάτῳ Ἰωσαφὰθ βασιλεῖ Ἰούδα, καὶ ἐβασίλευσεν δώδεκα ἔτη.
In the eighteenth year of Jehoshaphat’s reign over Judah, Jehoram (note: Jehoram is a variant spelling of Joram; also in verse 6.) son of Ahab became king of Israel, and he reigned in Samaria twelve years.
καὶ ἐποίησεν τὸ πονηρὸν ἐν ὀφθαλμοῖς Κυρίου, πλὴν οὐχ ὡς ὁ πατὴρ αὐτοῦ καὶ οὐχ ὡς ἢ μήτηρ αὐτοῦ, καὶ μετέστησεν τὰς τοῦ Βάαλ ἃς ἐποίησεν ὁ πατὴρ αὐτοῦ·
And he did evil in the sight of the LORD, but not as his father and mother had done. He removed the sacred pillar of Baal that his father had made.
πλὴν ἐν τῇ ἁμαρτίᾳ Ἰ βοὰμ υἱοῦ Ναβὰτ ὄς ἐξήμαρτεν τὸν Ἰσραὴλ ἐκολλήθη, οὐκ ἀπ’ αὐτῆς.
Nevertheless, he clung to the sins that Jeroboam son of Nebat had caused Israel to commit; he did not turn away from them.
Καὶ Μωσὰ βασιλεὺς Μωὰβ ἦν νωκήθ, καὶ ἐπέστρεψεν τῷ βασιλεῖ Ἰσραὴλ ἐν τῇ ἐπαναστάσει ἑκατὸν χιλιάδας ἀρνῶν καὶ ἑκατὸν χιλιάδας κριῶν ἐπιπόκων.
Now Mesha king of Moab was a sheep breeder (note: Or sheepherder), and he would render to the king of Israel a hundred thousand lambs and the wool of a hundred thousand rams.
καὶ ἐγένετο μετὰ τὸ ἀποθανεῖν Ἀχαὰβ καὶ ἠθέτησεν βασιλεὺς Μωὰβ ἐν βασιλεῖ Ἰσραήλ.
But after the death of Ahab, the king of Moab rebelled against the king of Israel.
καὶ ἐξῆλθεν ὁ βασιλεὺς Ἰωρὰμ ἐν τῇ ἡμέρα ἐκείνη ἐκ Σαμαρείας καὶ ἐπεσκέψατο τὸν Ἰσραήλ·
So at that time King Jehoram set out from Samaria and mobilized all Israel.
καὶ ἐπορεύθη καὶ ἐξαπέστειλεν πρὸς Ἰωσαφὰθ βασιλέα Ἰούδα λέγων Βασιλεὺς Μωὰβ ἠθέτησεν ἐν ἐμοί. εἰ πορεύσῃ μετ’ ἐμοῦ εἰς Μωὰβ εἰς πόλεμον; καὶ εἶπεν Ἀναβήσομαι· ὄμοιός μοι ὄμοιός σοι, ὡς ὁ λαός μου ὁ λαός σου, ὡς οἱ ἵπποι μου οἱ .ἴπποι σου.
And he sent a message to Jehoshaphat king of Judah: “The king of Moab has rebelled against me. Will you go with me to fight against Moab?” “I will go,” replied Jehoshaphat. “I am as you are, my people are your people, and my horses are your horses.”
καὶ εἶπεν Ποίᾳ ὁδῷ ἀναβῶ ; καὶ εἶπεν Ὁδὸν ἔρημον Ἐδωμ.
Then he asked, “Which way shall we go up?” “By way of the Desert of Edom,” replied Joram.
καὶ ἐπορεύθη ὁ βασιλεὺς Ἰσραὴλ καὶ ὁ βασιλεὺς Ἰούδα καὶ βασιλεὺς ’Εδώμ, καὶ ἐκύκλωσαν ὁδὸν ἑπτὰ ἡμερῶν· καὶ οὐκ ἢν ὕδωρ τῇ παρεμβολῇ καὶ τοῖς κτήνεσιν τοῖς ἐν τοῖς ποσὶν αὐτῶν
So the king of Israel, the king of Judah, and the king of Edom set out, and after they had traveled a roundabout route for seven days, they had no water for their army or for their animals.
καὶ εἶπεν βασιλεὺς Ἰσραήλ Ὤ, ὅτι κέκληκεν Κύριος τοὺς τρεῖς βασιλεῖς παρερχομένους δοῦναι αὐτοὺς ἐν χειρὶ Μάβ.
“Alas,” said the king of Israel, “for the LORD has summoned these three kings to deliver them into the hand of Moab!”
καὶ εἶπεν Ἰωσαφάθ Οὐκ έστιν ὦδε προφήτης τοῦ κυρίου καὶ ἐπιζητήσομεν τὸν κύριον παρ’ αὐτοῦ; καὶ ἀπεκρίθη εἷς τῶν παίδων βασιλέως Ἰσραὴλ καὶ εἶπεν Ὦδε Ἐλεισαῖε υἱὸς Ἰωσαφάθ, ὅς ἐπέχεεν ὕδωρ ἐπὶ χεῖρας Ἠλειού.
But Jehoshaphat asked, “Is there no prophet of the LORD here? Let us inquire of the LORD through him.” And one of the servants of the king of Israel answered, “Elisha son of Shaphat is here. He used to pour water on the hands of Elijah (note: Or He was Elijah’s personal assistant).”
καὶ εἶπεν Ἰωσαφάθ Ἔστιν αὐτῷ ῥῆμα· καὶ κατέβη πρὸς αὐτὸν βασιλεὺς Ἰσραὴλ καὶ Ἰωσαφὰθ βασιλεὺς Ἰούδα καὶ βασιλεὺς Ἐδώμ.
Jehoshaphat affirmed, “The word of the LORD is with him.” So the king of Israel and Jehoshaphat and the king of Edom went down to him.
καὶ εἶπεν Ἐλεισαῖε πρὸς βασιλέα Ἰσραήλ Τί ἐμοὶ καὶ σοί; δεῦρο πρὸς τοὺς προφήτας τοῦ πατρός σου. καὶ εἶπεν αὐτῷ ὁ βασιλεὺς Ἰσραήλ Μή, ὄτι κέκληκεν κύριος τοὺς τρεῖς τοῦ παραδοῦναι αὐτοὺς εἰς χεῖρας Μωάβ.
Elisha, however, said to the king of Israel, “What have we to do with each other? Go to the prophets of your father and of your mother!” “No,” replied the king of Israel, “for it is the LORD who has summoned these three kings to deliver them into the hand of Moab.”
καὶ εἶπεν ’ ἡ Κύριος τῶν δυνάμεων ᾦ παρέστην ἐνώπιον αὐτοῦ, ὅτι εἰ πρόσωπον Ἰωσαφὰθ βασιλέως Ἰούδα ἐγὼ λαμβάνω, ἦ ἐπέβλεψα πρὸς σὲ καὶ εἶδόν σε·
Then Elisha said, “As surely as the LORD of Hosts lives, before whom I stand, were it not for my regard for the presence of Jehoshaphat king of Judah, I would not look at you or acknowledge you.
καὶ νῦν λάβε μοι ψάλλοντα. καὶ ἐγένετο ὡς ἔψαλλεν ὁ ψάλλων, καὶ ἐγένετο ἐπ’ αὐτὸν χεὶρ Κυρίου·
But now, bring me a harpist (note: Or a musician; twice in this verse).” And while the harpist played, the hand of the LORD came upon Elisha
καὶ εἶπεν Τάδε λέγει Κύριος Ποιήσατε τὸν χειμάρρουν τοῦτον βοθύνους
and he said, “This is what the LORD says: ‘Dig this valley full of ditches.’
ὄτι τάδε λέγει Κύριος Οὐκ ὄψεσθε πνεῦμα καὶ οὐκ ὄψεσθε ὑετόν, καὶ ὁ χειμάρρους οὖτος πλησθήσεται ὕδατος, καὶ πίεσθε ὑμεῖς καὶ αἱ κτήσεις ὑμῶν κοὶ τὰ κτήνη ὑμῶν.
For the LORD says, ‘You will not see wind or rain, but the valley will be filled with water, and you will drink—you and your cattle and your animals.’
καὶ κοῦφος καὶ αὕτη ἐν ὀφθαλμοῖς Κυρίου· καὶ παραδώσω τὴν Μωὰβ ἐν χειρὶ
This is a simple matter in the sight of the LORD, and He will also deliver the Moabites into your hand.
καὶ πατάξετε πᾶσαν πόλιν ὀχυράν, καὶ πᾶν ξύλον ἀγαθὸν καὶ πάσας πηγὰς ὕδατος ἐμφράξατε, καὶ πᾶσαν μερίδα ἀγαθὴν ἐν λίθοις.
And you shall attack every fortified city and every city of importance. You shall cut down every good tree, stop up every spring, and ruin every good field with stones.”
καὶ ἐγένετο τὸ πρωὶ ἀναβαινούσης τῆς καὶ ἰδοὺ ὕδατα ἥρχοντο ἐξ ὁδοῦ Ἐδώμ, καὶ ἐπλήσθη ἡ γῆ
The next morning, at the time of the morning sacrifice, water suddenly flowed from the direction of Edom and filled the land.
καὶ πᾶσα Μωὰβ ἤκουσαν ὅτι ἀνέβησαν οἱ βασιλεῖς πολεαὐτούς· καὶ ἀνεβόησαν ἐ·κ παντὸς περιεζωσμένοι ζώνην καὶ Ὥ· καὶ ἔστησαν ἐπὶ τοῦ ὁρίου.
Now all the Moabites had heard that the kings had come up to fight against them. So all who could bear arms, young and old, were summoned and stationed at the border.
καὶ ὤρθρισαν τὸ πρωί, καὶ ὁ ἥλιος ἀνέτειλεν ἐπὶ τὰ ὕδατα· καὶ εἶδεν Μωὰβ ἐξ ἐναντίας τὰ ὕδατα πυρρὰ ὡσεὶ αἷμα,
When they got up early in the morning, the sun was shining on the water, and it looked as red as blood to the Moabites across the way.
καὶ εἶπαν Αἷμα τοῦτο τῆς ῥομφαίας· οἱ βασιλεῖς, καὶ ἐπάταξεν ἀνὴρ τὸν πλησίον αὐτοῦ· καὶ νῦν ἐπὶ τὰ σκῦλα, Μωάβ.
“This is blood!” they exclaimed. “The kings have clashed swords and slaughtered one another. Now to the plunder, Moab!”
καὶ Ισραήλ· καὶ Ἰσραὴλ ἀνέστησαν καὶ ἐπάταξαν τὴν Μωάβ, καὶ ἔφυγον ἀπὸ προσώπου αὐτλῶν. καὶ εἰσῆλθον εἰσπορευόμενοι καὶ τύπτοντες τὴν Μωάβ,
But when the Moabites came to the camp of Israel, the Israelites rose up and attacked them, and they fled before them. So the Israelites invaded their land and struck down the Moabites.
καὶ τὰς πόλεις καθεῖλον· καὶ πᾶσαν μερίδα ἀγαθήν, ἔρριψαν ἀνὴρ τὸν λίθον καὶ ἐνέπλησαν αὐτήν, καὶ πᾶσαν πηγὴν ἐνέφραξαν, καὶ πᾶν ξύλον ἀγαθὸν κατέβαλον ἕως τοῦ καταλιπεῖν τοὺς λίθους τοῦ τοίχου καθῃρημένους· καὶ ἐκύκλευσαν οἱ σφενδονῆται καὶ ἐπάταξαν αὐτήν.
They destroyed the cities, and each man threw stones on every good field until it was covered. They stopped up every spring and cut down every good tree. Only Kir-haraseth was left with stones in place, but men with slings surrounded it and attacked it as well.
καὶ εἶδεν ὁ βασιλεὺς Μωὰβ ὅτι ἐκραταίωσεν ὑπὲρ αὐτὸν ὁ πόλεμος, καὶ ἔλαβεν μεθ’ ἑαυτοῦ ἑπτακοσίους ἄνδρας ἐσπασμένους ῥομφαίαν διακόψαι πρὸς βασιλέα Ἐδώμ· καὶ οὐκ ἠδυνήθησαν. θησαν.
When the king of Moab saw that the battle was too fierce for him, he took with him seven hundred swordsmen to break through to the king of Edom, but they could not prevail.
καὶ ἔλαβεν τὸν υἱὸν αὐτοῦ τὸν πρωτότοκον, ὃς ἐβασίλευσεν ἀντ’ αὐτοῦ, καὶ ἀνήνεγκεν αὐτὸν ὁλοκαύτωμα ἐπὶ τοῦ τείχους· καὶ ἐγένετο μετάμελος μέγας ἐπὶ Ἰσραήλ. καὶ ἀπῆραν ἀπ’ αὐτοῦ καὶ ἐπέστρεψαν εἰς τὴν γῆν.
So he took his firstborn son, who was to succeed him, and offered him as a burnt offering on the city wall. And there was great fury against the Israelites (note: Or And Israel’s fury was great), so they withdrew and returned to their own land.
