Καὶ μετὰ τοὺς λόγους τούτους καὶ τὴν ἀλήθειαν ταύτην ἦλθεν Σενναχηρεὶμ βασιλεὺς Ἀσσυρίων, καὶ ἦλθεν ἐπὶ Ἰούδαν καὶ παρενέβαλεν ἐπὶ τὰς πόλεις τὰς τειχήρεις, καὶ εἶπεν προκαταλαβέσθαι αὐτάς.
After all these acts of faithfulness, Sennacherib king of Assyria came and invaded Judah. He laid siege to the fortified cities, intending to conquer them for himself.
καὶ εἶδεν Ἐζεκίας ὅτι ἤκει Σενναχηρεὶμ καὶ τὸ πρόσωπον αὐτοῦ τοῦ πολεμῆσαι ἐπὶ Ἰερουσαλήμ.
When Hezekiah saw that Sennacherib had come to make war against Jerusalem,
καὶ ἐβουλεύσατο μετὰ τῶν πρεσβυτέρων αὐτοῦ καὶ τῶν δυνατῶν ἐμφράξαι τὰ ὕδατα τῶν πηγῶν ἃ ἦν ἔξω τῆς πόλεως· καὶ συνεπίσχυσεν αὐτῷ.
he consulted with his leaders and mighty men about stopping up the waters of the springs outside the city, and they helped him carry it out.
καὶ συνήγαγεν λαὸν πολὺν καὶ ἐνέφραξεν τὰ ὕδατα τῶν πηγῶν καὶ τὸν ποταμὸν τὸν διορίζοντα διὰ τῆς πόλεως, λέγων Μὴ ἔλθῃ βασιλεὺς Ἀσσοὺρ καὶ εὕρῃ ὕδωρ πολὺ καὶ κατισχύσῃ.
Many people assembled and stopped up all the springs and the stream that flowed through the land. “Why should the kings (note: Hebrew; LXX and Syriac king) of Assyria come and find plenty of water?” they said.
καὶ κατίσχυσεν Ἐζεκίας καὶ ᾠκοδόμησεν πᾶν τὸ τεῖχος τὸ κατεσκαμμένον καὶ πύργους καὶ ἔξω προτείχισμα ἄλλο, καὶ κατίσχυσεν τὸ ἀνάλημμα πόλεως Δαυείδ, καὶ κατεσκεύασεν ὅπλα πολλά.
Then Hezekiah worked resolutely to rebuild all the broken sections of the wall and to raise up towers on it. He also built an outer wall and reinforced the supporting terraces (note: Hebrew the Millo) of the City of David, and he produced an abundance of weapons and shields.
καὶ ἔθετο ἄρχοντας τοῦ πολέμου ἐπὶ τὸν λαόν, καὶ συνήχθησαν πρὸς αὐτὸν ἐπὶ τὴν πλατεῖαν τῆς πύλης τῆς φάραγγος, καὶ ἐλάλησεν ἐπὶ καρδίαν αὐτῶν λέγων
Hezekiah appointed military commanders over the people and gathered the people in the square of the city gate. Then he encouraged them, saying,
Ισχύσατε καὶ ἀνδρίζεσθε, μὴ πτοηθῆτε ἀπὸ προσώπου βασιλέως Ἀσσοὺρ καὶ ἀπὸ προσώπου παντὸς τοῦ ἔθνους τοῦ μετʼ αὐτοῦ· ὅτι μεθʼ ἡμῶν πλείονες ἢ μετʼ αὐτοῦ.
“Be strong and courageous! Do not be afraid or discouraged before the king of Assyria and the vast army with him, for there is a greater One with us than with him.
μετʼ αὐτοῦ βραχίονες σάρκινοι, μεθʼ ἡμῶν δὲ Κύριος ὁ θεὸς ἡμῶν, τοῦ σώζειν καὶ τοῦ πολεμεῖν τὸν πόλεμον ἡμῶν. καὶ κατεθάρσησεν ὁ λαὸς ἐπὶ τοῖς λόγοις Ἐζεκίου βασιλέως Ἰούδα.
With him is only the arm of flesh (note: Or He has only the strength of his own flesh), but with us is the LORD our God to help us and to fight our battles.” So the people were strengthened by the words of Hezekiah king of Judah.
Καὶ μετὰ ταῦτα ἀπέστειλεν Σεναχηρεὶμ βασιλεὺς Ἀσσυρίων τοὺς παῖδας αὐτοῦ ἐπὶ Ἰερουσαλήμ, καὶ αὐτὸς ἐπὶ Λαχεὶς καὶ πᾶσα ἡ στρατεία μετʼ αὐτοῦ, και ἀπέστειλεν πρὸς Ἐζεκίαν βασιλέα Ἰούδα καὶ πρὸς πάντα Ἰουδὰ τὸν ἐν Ἰερουσαλὴμ λέγων
Later, as Sennacherib king of Assyria and all his forces besieged Lachish, he sent his servants to Jerusalem with a message for King Hezekiah of Judah and all the people of Judah who were in Jerusalem:
Οὕτως λέγει ὁ βασιλεὺς Ἀσσυρίων Ἐπὶ τί ὑμεῖς πεποίθατε; καθήσεσθε ἐν τῇ περιοχῇ ἐν Ἰερουσαλήμ ;
“This is what Sennacherib king of Assyria says: What is the basis of your confidence, that you remain in Jerusalem under siege?
οὐχὶ Ἐζεκίας ἀπατᾷ ὑμᾶς τοῦ παραδοῦναι ὑμᾶς εἰς θάνατον καὶ εἰς λιμὸν καὶ εἰς δίψαν, λέγων Κύριος ὁ θεὸς ἡμῶν σώσει ὑμᾶς ἐκ χειρὸς βασιλέως Ἀσσούρ;
Is not Hezekiah misleading you to give you over to death by famine and thirst when he says, ‘The LORD our God will deliver us from the hand of the king of Assyria?’
οὗτός ἐστιν Ἐζεκίας ὅς περιεῖλεν τὰ θυσιαστήρια αὐτοῦ καὶ τὰ ὑψηλὰ αὐτοῦ, καὶ εἶπεν τῷ Ἰούδᾳ καὶ τοῖς κατοικοῦσιν ἐν Ἰερουσαλὴμ λέγων Κατέναντι τοῦ θυσιαστηρίου τούτου προσκυνήσετε καὶ ἐπʼ αὐτῷ θυμιάσετε.
Did not Hezekiah himself remove His high places and His altars and say to Judah and Jerusalem, ‘You must worship before one altar, and on it you shall burn sacrifices’?
οὐ γνώσεσθε ὅ τι ἐποίησα ἐγὼ καὶ οἱ πατέρες μου πᾶσι τοῖς λαοῖς τῶν χωρῶν μὴ δυνάμενοι ἡδύναντο θεοὶ τῶν ἐθνῶν πάσης τῆς γῆς σώσαι τὸν λαὸν αὐτῶν ἐκ χειρός μου;
Do you not know what I and my fathers have done to all the peoples of the lands? Have the gods of these nations ever been able to deliver their land from my hand?
τίς ἐν πᾶσι τοῖς θεοῖς τῶν ἐθνῶν τούτων οὓς ἐξωλέθρευσαν οἱ πατέρες μου μὴ ἡδύναντο σῶσαι τὸν λαὸν αὐτῶν ἐκ χειρός μου, ὅτι δυνήσεται ὁ θεὸς ὑμῶν σώσαι ὑμᾶς ἐκ χειρός μου;
Who among all the gods of these nations that my fathers devoted to destruction (note: Forms of the Hebrew cherem refer to the giving over of things or persons to the LORD, either by destroying them or by giving them as an offering.) has been able to deliver his people from my hand? How then can your God deliver you from my hand?
νῦν μὴ ἀπατάτω ὑμᾶς Ἐζεκίας, και μὴ πεποιθέναι ὑμᾶς ποιείτω κατὰ ταῦτα, καὶ μὴ πιστεύετε αὐτῷ· ὅτι οὐ μὴ δύνηται ὁ θεὸς παντὸς ἔθνους καὶ βασιλείας τοῦ σῶσαι τὸν λαὸν αὐτοῦ ἐκ χειρός μου καὶ ἐκ χειρὸς πατέρων μου, ὅτι ὁ θεὸς ὑμῶν οὐ μὴ σώσει ὑμᾶς ἐκ χειρός μου.
So now, do not let Hezekiah deceive you, and do not let him mislead you like this. Do not believe him, for no god of any nation or kingdom has been able to deliver his people from my hand or from the hand of my fathers. How much less will your God deliver you from my hand!”
καὶ ἔτι ἐλάλησαν παῖδες αὐτοῦ ἐπὶ Κύριον θεὸν καὶ ἐπὶ Ἐζεκίαν παῖδα αὐτοῦ.
And the servants of Sennacherib spoke further against the LORD God and against His servant Hezekiah.
καὶ βιβλίον ἔγραψεν ὀνειδίζειν τὸν κύριον θεὸν Ἰσραήλ, καὶ εἶπεν περὶ αὐτοῦ λέγων Ὡς θεοὶ τῶν ἐθνῶν τῆς γῆς οὐκ ἐξείλαντο λαοὺς αὐτῶν ἐκ χειρός μου, οὕτως οὐ μὴ ἐξέληται ὁ θεὸς Ἐζεκίου λαὸν αὐτοῦ ἐκ χειρός μου.
He also wrote letters mocking the LORD, the God of Israel, and saying against Him: “Just as the gods of the nations did not deliver their people from my hand, so the God of Hezekiah will not deliver His people from my hand.”
καὶ ἐβόησεν φωνῇ μεγάλῃ Ἰουδαιστὶ ἐπὶ λαὸν Ἰερουσαλὴμ τὸν ἐπὶ τοῦ τείχους τοῦ βοηθῆσαι αὐτοῖς καὶ κατασπάσαι, ὅπως προκαταλάβωνται τὴν πόλιν.
Then the Assyrians called out loudly in Hebrew (note: Or in the dialect of Judah) to the people of Jerusalem who were on the wall, to frighten and terrify them in order to capture the city.
καὶ ἐλάλησεν ἐπὶ θεὸν Ἰερουσαλὴμ καὶ ὡς καὶ ἐπὶ θεοὺς λαῶν τῆς γῆς, ἔργα χειρῶν ἀνθρώπων.
They spoke against the God of Jerusalem as they had spoken against the gods of the peoples of the earth—the work of human hands.
καὶ προσηύξατο Ἐζεκίας ὁ βασιλεὺς καὶ Ἰσαίας υἱὸς Ἀμὼς ὁ προφήτης περὶ τούτων, καὶ ἐβόησεν εἰς τὸν οὐρανόν.
In response, King Hezekiah and the prophet Isaiah son of Amoz cried out to heaven in prayer,
καὶ ἀπέστειλεν Κύριος ἄγγελον· ἐξέτριψεν πᾶν δυνατὸν καὶ πολεμιστὴν καὶ ἄρχοντα καὶ στρατηγὸν ἐν τῇ παρεμβολῇ βασιλέως Ἀσσούρ· καὶ ἀπέστρεψεν μετὰ αἰσχύνης προσώπου εἰς τὴν γῆν αὐτοῦ. καὶ ἦλθεν εἰς οἶκον θεοῦ αὐτοῦ, καὶ τῶν ἐξελθόντων ἐκ κοιλίας αὐτοῦ κατέβαλον αὐτὸν ἐν ῥομφαία.
and the LORD sent an angel who annihilated every mighty man of valor and every leader and commander in the camp of the king of Assyria. So he withdrew to his own land in disgrace. And when he entered the temple of his god, some of his own sons struck him down with the sword.
καὶ ἔσωσεν Κύριος Ἐζεκίαν καὶ τοὺς κατοικοῦντας ἐν Ἰερουσαλὴμ ἐκ χειρὸς Σενναχηρεὶμ βασιλέως Ἀσσοὺρ καὶ ἐκ χειρὸς πάντων, καὶ κατέπαυσεν αὐτοὺς κυκλόθεν.
So the LORD saved Hezekiah and the people of Jerusalem from the hands of King Sennacherib of Assyria and all others, and He gave them rest on every side.
καὶ πολλοὶ ἔφερον δῶρα τῷ κυρίῳ εἰς Ἰερουσαλὴμ καὶ δόματα τῷ Ἐζεκίᾳ βασιλεῖ Ἰούδα, καὶ ὑπερήρθη κατʼ ὀφθαλμοὺς πάντων τῶν ἐθνῶν μετὰ ταῦτα.
Many brought offerings to Jerusalem for the LORD and valuable gifts for Hezekiah king of Judah, and from then on he was exalted in the eyes of all nations.
Ἐν ταῖς ἡμέραις ἐκείναις ἠρρώστησεν Ἐζεκίας ἕως θανάτου, καὶ προσηύξατο πρὸς Κύριον, καὶ ἐπήκουσεν αὐτῷ, καὶ σημεῖον ἔδωκεν αὐτῷ.
In those days Hezekiah became mortally ill. So he prayed to the LORD, who spoke to him and gave him a sign.
καὶ οὐ κατὰ τὸ ἀνταπόδομα ὃ ἔδωκεν αὐτῷ ἀπέδαωκεν Ἐζεκίας, ἀλλὰ ὑψώθη ἡ καρδία αὐτοῦ· καὶ ἐγένετο ἐπʼ αὐτὸν ὀργὴ καὶ ἐπὶ Ἰουδὰ καὶ Ἰερουσαλήμ.
But because his heart was proud, Hezekiah did not repay the favor shown to him. Therefore wrath came upon him and upon Judah and Jerusalem.
καὶ ἐταπεινώθη Ἐζεκίας ἀπὸ τοῦ ὕψους τῆς καρδίας αὐτοῦ. καὶ οἱ κατοικοῦντες Ἰερουσαλήμ, καὶ οὐκ ἐπῆλθεν ἐπʼ αὐτοὺς ὀργὴ θεοῦ ἐν ταῖς ἡμέραις Ἐζεκίου.
Then Hezekiah humbled the pride of his heart—he and the people of Jerusalem—so that the wrath of the LORD did not come upon them during the days of Hezekiah.
καὶ ἐγένετο τῷ Ἐζεκίᾳ πλοῦτος καὶ δόξα πολλὴ σφόδρα· καὶ θησαυροὺς ἐποίησεν αὐτῷ ἀργυρίου καὶ χρυσίου καὶ τοῦ λίθου τοῦ τιμίου, καὶ εἰς τὰ ἀρώματα καὶ ὁπλοθήκας καὶ εἰς σκεύη ἐπιθυμητά,
Hezekiah had very great riches and honor, and he made treasuries for his silver, gold, precious stones, spices, shields, and all kinds of valuable articles.
καὶ πόλεις εἰς τὰ γενήματα σίτου καὶ ἐλαίου καὶ οἴνου, καὶ φάτνας παντὸς κτήνους καὶ μάνδρας εἰς τὰ ποίμνια,
He also made storehouses for the harvest of grain and new wine and oil, stalls for all kinds of livestock, and pens for the flocks.
καὶ πόλεις ἃς ᾠκοδόμησεν αὐτῷ καὶ ἀποσκευὴν προβάτων καὶ βοῶν εἰς πλῆθος, ὅτι ἔδωκεν αὐτῷ Κύριος ἀποσκευὴν πολλὴν σφόδρα.
He made cities for himself, and he acquired herds of sheep and cattle in abundance, for God gave him very great wealth.
αὐτὸς Ἐζεκίας ἐνέφραξεν τὴν ἔξοδον τοῦ ὕδατος Σειὼν τὸ ἄναω, καὶ κατηύθυνεν αὐτὰ κάτω πρὸς λίβα τῆς πόλεως Δαυείδ· καὶ εὐοδώθη Ἐζεκίας ἐν πᾶσι τοῖς ἔργοις αὐτοῦ.
It was Hezekiah who blocked the upper outlet of the Spring of Gihon and channeled it down to the west side of the City of David. And Hezekiah prospered in all that he did.
καὶ οὕτως τοῖς πρεσβύταις τῶν ἀρχόντων ἀπὸ Βαβυλῶνος τοῖς ἀποσταλεῖσιν πρὸς αὐτὸν πυθέσθαι παρ αὐτοῦ τὸ τέρας ὃ ἐγένετο ἐπὶ τῆς γῆς, ἐγκατέλιπεν αὐτὸν Κύριος τοῦ πειράσαι αὐτόν, εἰδέναι τὰ ἐν τῇ καρδίᾳ αὐτοῦ.
And so when ambassadors of the rulers of Babylon were sent to him to inquire about the wonder that had happened in the land, God left him alone to test him, that He might know all that was in Hezekiah’s heart.
καὶ τὰ κατάλοιπα τῶν λόγων Ἐζεκίου καὶ τὸ ἔλεος αὐτοῦ, ἰδοὺ γέγραπται ἐν τῇ προφητείᾳ Ἰσαίου υἱοῦ Ἀμὼς τοῦ προφήτου καὶ ἐπὶ βιβλίου βασιλέων Ἰούδα καὶ Ἰσραήλ.
As for the rest of the acts of Hezekiah and his deeds of loving devotion, they are indeed written in the vision of the prophet Isaiah son of Amoz in the Book of the Kings of Judah and Israel.
καὶ ἐκοιμήθη Ἐζεκίας μετὰ τῶν πατέρων αὐτοῦ, καὶ ἔθαψαν αὐτὸν ἐν ἀναβάσει τάφων υἱῶν Δαυείδ· καὶ δόξαν καὶ τιμὴν ἔδωκαν αὐτῷ ἐν τῷ θανάτῳ αὐτοῦ πᾶς Ἰουδὰ καὶ οἱ κατοικοῦντες ἐν Ἰερουσαλήμ· και ἐβασίλευσεν Μανασσὴ υἱὸς αὐτοῦ ἀντʼ αὐτοῦ.
And Hezekiah rested with his fathers and was buried in the upper tombs of David’s descendants. All Judah and the people of Jerusalem paid him honor at his death. And his son Manasseh reigned in his place.
