Ὤν πέντε καὶ εἵκοσι ἐτῶν ἐβασίλευσεν Ἀμασείας, καὶ εἴκοσι ἐννέα ἔτη ἐβασίλευσεν ἐν Ἰερουσαλήμ, καὶ ὄνομα τῇ μητρὶ αὐτοῦ Ἰωναὰ ἀπὸ Ἰερουσαλήμ.
Amaziah was twenty-five years old when he became king, and he reigned in Jerusalem twenty-nine years. His mother’s name was Jehoaddan; she was from Jerusalem.
καὶ ἐποίησεν τὸ εὐθὲς ἐνώπιον Κυρίου, ἀλλʼ οὐκ ἐν καρδίᾳ πλήρει.
And he did what was right in the eyes of the LORD, but not wholeheartedly.
καὶ ἐγένετο ὡς κατέστη ἡ βασιλεία ἐν χειρὶ αὐτοῦ, καὶ ἐθανάτωσεν τοὺς παῖδας αὐτοῦ τοὺς φονεύσαντας τὸν βασιλέα πατέρα αὐτοῦ.
As soon as the kingdom was firmly in his grasp, Amaziah executed the servants who had murdered his father the king.
καὶ τοὺς υἱοὺς αὐτῶν οὐκ ἀπέκτεινεν, κατὰ τὴν διαθήκην τοῦ νόμου Κυρίου καθὼς γέγραπται, ὡς ἐνετείλατο Κύριος λέγων Οὐκ ἀποθανοῦνται πατέρες ὑπέρ τέκνων, καὶ υἱοὶ οὐκ ἀποθανοῦνται ὑπέρ πατέρων, ἀλλʼ ; ἕκαστος τῇ ἑαυτοῦ ἁμαρτίᾳ ἀποθανοῦνται.
Yet he did not put their sons to death, but acted according to what is written in the Law, in the Book of Moses, where the LORD commanded: “Fathers must not be put to death for their children, and children must not be put to death for their fathers; each is to die for his own sin (note: Deuteronomy 24:16).”
Καὶ συνήγαγεν Ἀμασείας τὸν οἶκον Ἰούδα, καὶ ἀνέστησεν αὐτοὺς κατʼ οἴκους πατριῶν αὐτῶν εἰς χιλιάρχους καὶ ἑκατοντάρχους παντὶ Ἰούδᾳ καὶ Ἰερουσαλήμ· καὶ ἠρίθμησεν αὐτοὺς ἀπὸ εἰκοσαετοῦς καὶ ἐπάνω, καὶ εὗρεν αὐτοὺς τριακοσίας χιλιάδας, δυνατοὺς ἐξελθεῖν εἰς πόλεμον, ρατοῦντας δόρυ καὶ θυρεόν.
Then Amaziah gathered the people of Judah and assigned them according to their families to commanders of thousands and of hundreds. And he numbered those twenty years of age or older throughout Judah and Benjamin and found 300,000 chosen men able to serve in the army, bearing the spear and shield.
καὶ ἐμισθώσατο ἀπὸ Ἰσραὴλ ἑκατὸν χιλιάδας, δυνατοὺς ἰσχύι, ἑκατὸν ταλάντων ἀργυρίου.
He also hired 100,000 mighty men of valor from Israel for a hundred talents of silver (note: 100 talents is approximately 3.77 tons or 3.42 metric tons of silver; also in verse 9.).
καὶ ἄνθρωπος τοῦ θεοῦ ἦλθεν πρὸς αὐτὸν λέγων Βασιλεῦ, οὐ πορεύσεται μετὰ σοῦ δύναμις Ἰσραήλ, ὅτι οὐκ ἔστιν Κύριος μετὰ Ἰσραὴλ πάντων τῶν ἱῶν Ἐφράιμ.
But a man of God came to him and said, “O king, do not let the army of Israel go with you, for the LORD is not with Israel—not with any of the Ephraimites.
ὅτι ἐὰν ὑπολάβῃς κατισχῦσαι ἐν τούτοις, καὶ τροπώσεταί σε Κύριος ἐναντίον τῶν ἐχθρῶν, ὅτι ἐστὶν παρὰ Κυρίου καὶ ἰσχῦσαι καὶ τροπώσασθαι
Even if you go and fight bravely in battle, God will overthrow you before the enemy, for God has power to help and power to overthrow.”
καὶ εἶπεν Ἀμασίας τῷ ἀνθρώπῳ τοῦ θεοῦ Καὶ τί ποιήσω τὰ ἑκατὸν τάλαντα ἂ ἔδωκα τῇ δυνάμει Ἰσραήλ; καὶ εἶπεν ὁ ἄνθρωπος τοῦ θεοῦ Ἔστιν τῷ κυρίῳ δοῦναίσοι πλεῖστα τούτων.
Amaziah asked the man of God, “What should I do about the hundred talents I have given to the troops of Israel?” And the man of God replied, “The LORD is able to give you much more than this.”
καὶ διεχώρισεν Ἀμασείας τῇ δυνάμει τῇ ἐλθούσῃ πρὸς αὐτὸν ἀπὸ Ἐφράιμ ἀπελθεῖν εἰς τὸν τόπον αὐτῶν· καὶ ἐθυμώθησαν σφόδρα ἐπὶ Ἰούδαν, καὶ ἐπέστρεψαν εἰς τὸν τόπον αὐτῶν ἐν ἀργῇ θυμοῦ.
So Amaziah dismissed the troops who had come to him from Ephraim and sent them home. And they were furious with Judah and returned home in great anger.
καὶ Ἀμασείας κατίσχυσεν καὶ παρέλαβεν τὸν λαὸν αὐτοῦ, καὶ ἐπορεύθη εἰς τὴν κοιλάδα τῶν ἁλῶν, καὶ ἐπάταξεν ἐκεῖ τοὺς υἱοὺς Σηεὶρ δέκα χιλιάδας.
Amaziah, however, summoned his strength and led his troops to the Valley of Salt, where he struck down 10,000 men of Seir,
καὶ δέκα χιλιάδας ἐζώγρησαν οἱ υἱοὶ Ἰούδα, καὶ ἔφερον αὐτοὺς ἐπὶ τὸ ἄκρον τοῦ κρημνοῦ, καὶ κατεκρήμνιζον αὐτοὺς ἀπὸ τοῦ ἄκρου τοῦ κρημνοῦ, καὶ πάντες διερρήγνυντο.
and the army of Judah also captured 10,000 men alive. They took them to the top of a cliff and threw them down so that all were dashed to pieces.
καὶ υἱοὶ τῆς δυνάμεως οὓς ἀπέστρεψεν Ἀμασείας τοῦ μὴ εὺρεθῆναι μετʼ αὐτοῦ εἰς πόλεμον, καὶ ἐπέθεντο ἐπὶ τὰς πόλεις Ἰούδα ἀπὸ Σαμαρείας ἕως Βαιθώρων, καὶ ἐπάταξεν ἐν αὐτοῖς τρεῖς χιλιάδας καὶ ἐσκύλευσεν σκῦλα πολλά.
Meanwhile the troops that Amaziah had dismissed from battle raided the cities of Judah, from Samaria to Beth-horon. They struck down 3,000 people and carried off a great deal of plunder.
Καὶ ἐγένετο μετὰ τὸ ἐλθεῖν Ἀμασείαν πατάξαντος τὴν Ἰδουμαίαν, καὶ ἤνεγκεν πρὸς αὐτοὺς τοὺς θεοὺς υἱῶν Σηείρ, καὶ ἔστησεν αὐτοὺς αὐτῷ εἰς θεούς, καὶ ἔστησεν ἐναντίον αὐτῶν προσκυνεῖν, καὶ αὐτὸς αὐτοῖς ἔθυεν.
When Amaziah returned from the slaughter of the Edomites, he brought back the gods of the Seirites, set them up as his own gods, bowed before them, and burned sacrifices to them.
καὶ ἐγένετο ἀργὴ Κυρίου ἐπὶ Ἀμάσειαν, καὶ ἀπέστειλεν αὐτῷ προφήτας καὶ εἶπαν αὐτῷ Τί ἐζήτησας τοὺς θεοὺς τοῦ λαοῦ οἳ οὐκ ἐξείλαντο τὸν λαὸν αὐτῶν ἐκ χειρός σου;
Therefore the anger of the LORD burned against Amaziah, and He sent him a prophet, who said, “Why have you sought this people’s gods, which could not deliver them from your hand?”
καὶ ἐγένετο ἐν τῷ λαλῆσαι αὐτῷ, καὶ εἶπεν αὐτῷ Μὴ σύμβουλον τοῦ βασιλέως δέδωκά σε; πρόσεχε μὴ μαστιγωθῇς. καὶ ἐσιώπησεν ὁ προφήτης, καὶ εἶπεν ὅτι Γινώσκω ὅτι ἐβούλετο ἐπὶ σοὶ τοῦ καταφθεῖραί σε, ὅτι ἐποίησας τοῦτο καὶ οὐκ ἐπήκουσας τῆς συμβουλίας μου.
While he was still speaking, the king asked, “Have we made you the counselor to the king? Stop! Why be struck down?” So the prophet stopped, but he said, “I know that God has determined to destroy you, because you have done this and have not heeded my advice.”
Καὶ ἐβουλεύσατο Ἀμασείας.
Then Amaziah king of Judah took counsel and sent word to the king of Israel Jehoash (note: Jehoash is a variant of Joash; also in verses 18, 21, 23, and 25.) son of Jehoahaz, the son of Jehu. “Come, let us meet face to face,” he said.
καὶ ἀπέστειλεν Ἰωὰς βασιλεὺς Ἰσραὴλ πρὸς Ἀμάσειαν βασιλέα Ἰούδα λέγων χοζεὶ ἐν τῷ Λιβάνῳ ἀπέστειλεν πρὸς τὴν κέδρον τὴν ἐν τῷ Λιβάνῳ λέγων Δὸς τὴν θυγατέρα σου τῷ υἱῷ μου εἰς γυναῖκα, καὶ ἰδοὺ ἐλεύσεται τὰ θηρία τοῦ ἀγροῦ τὰ ἐν τῷ Λιβάνῳ· καὶ ἦλθαν τὰ θηρία καὶ κατεπάτησαν τὸν ἁχούχ.
But Jehoash king of Israel replied to Amaziah king of Judah: “A thistle in Lebanon sent a message to a cedar in Lebanon, saying, ‘Give your daughter to my son in marriage.’ Then a wild beast in Lebanon came along and trampled the thistle.
εἶπας Ἰδοὺ ἐπάταξας τὴν Ἰδουμαίαν, καὶ ἐπαίρει σε ἡ καρδία ἡ βαρεῖα· νῦν κάθησο ἐν οἴκῳ σου, καὶ ἴνα τί συμβάλλεις ἐν κακίᾳ, καὶ πεσῇ σὺ καὶ Ἰούδας μετὰ σοῦ;
You have said, ‘Look, I have defeated Edom,’ and your heart has become proud and boastful. Now stay at home. Why should you stir up trouble so that you fall—you and Judah with you?”
καὶ οὐκ ἤκουσεν Ἀμασείας, ὅτι παρὰ Κυρίου ἐγένετο τοῦ παραδοῦναι αὐτὸν εἰς χεῖρας. ὅτι ἐξεζήτησεν τοὺς θεοὺς τῶν Ἰδουμαίων.
But Amaziah would not listen, for this had come from God in order to deliver them into the hand of Jehoash, because they had sought the gods of Edom.
καὶ ἀνέβη Ἰωὰς βασιλεὺς Ἰσραήλ, καὶ ὤφθησαν ἀλλήλοις αὐτὸς καὶ Ἀμασείας βασιλεὺς Ἰούδα ἐν Βαιθσάμυς ἥ ἐστιν τοῦ Ἰούδα.
So Jehoash king of Israel advanced, and he and Amaziah king of Judah faced each other at Beth-shemesh in Judah.
καὶ ἐτροπώθη Ἰούδας κατὰ πρόσωπον Ἰσραήλ, καὶ ἔφυγεν ἕκαστος εἰς τὸ σκήνωμα.
And Judah was routed before Israel, and every man fled to his own home.
καὶ τὸν Ἀμάσειαν βασιλέα Ἰούδα τὸν τοῦ Ἰωὰς κατέλαβεν Ἰωὰς βασιλεὺς Ἰσραὴλ ἐν Βαιθσάμυς, καὶ εἰσήγαγεν αὐτοὺς εἰς Ἰερουσαλήμ, καὶ κατέσπασεν ἀπὸ τοῦ τείχους Ἰερουσαλὴμ ἀπὸ πύλης Ἐφράιμ ἕως πύλης γωνίας τετρακοσίους πήχεις.
There at Beth-shemesh, Jehoash king of Israel captured Amaziah king of Judah, the son of Joash, the son of Jehoahaz (note: Jehoahaz is a variant of Ahaziah.). Then Jehoash brought him to Jerusalem and broke down the wall of Jerusalem from the Ephraim Gate to the Corner Gate—a section of four hundred cubits (note: 400 cubits is approximately 600 feet or 182.9 meters.).
καὶ πᾶν τὸ χρυσίον καὶ τὸ ἀργύριον καὶ πάντα τὰ σκεύη τὰ εὑρεθέντα ἐν οἵκῳ Κυρίου καὶ παρὰ τῷ Ἰαβδεδὸμ καὶ τοὺς θησαυροὺς οἴκου τοῦ βασιλέως καὶ τοὺς υἱοὺς τῶν συμμίξεων, καὶ ἐπέστρεψεν εἰς Σαμάρειαν.
He took all the gold and silver and all the articles found in the house of God with Obed-edom and in the treasuries of the royal palace, as well as some hostages. Then he returned to Samaria.
Καὶ ἔζησεν Ἀμασείας ὁ τοῦ Ἰωὰς βασιλεὺς Ἰούδα μετὰ τὸ ἀποθανεῖν Ἰωὰς τὸν τοῦ Ἰωὰς βασιλέα Ἰσραὴλ ἔτη δέκα πέντε.
Amaziah son of Joash king of Judah lived for fifteen years after the death of Jehoash son of Jehoahaz king of Israel.
καὶ οἱ λοιποὶ λόγοι Ἀμασείου οἱ πρῶτοι καὶ οἱ ἔσχατοι οὐκ ἰδοὺ γεγραμμένοι ἐπὶ βιβλίου Ἰούδα καὶ Ἰσραήλ;
As for the rest of the acts of Amaziah, from beginning to end, are they not written in the Book of the Kings of Judah and Israel?
καὶ ἐν τῷ καιρῷ ᾧ ἀπέστη Ἀμασείας ἀπὸ Κυρίου, καὶ ἐπέθεντο αὐτῷ ἐπίθεσιν, καὶ ἔφυγεν ἀπὸ Ἰερουσαλὴμ εἰς Λαχείς· καὶ ἀπέστειλεν κατόπισθεν αὐτοῦ εἰς Λαχείς, καὶ ἐθανάτωσεν αὐτὸν ἐκεῖ
From the time that Amaziah turned from following the LORD, a conspiracy was formed against him in Jerusalem, and he fled to Lachish. But men were sent after him to Lachish, and they killed him there.
καὶ ἀνέλαβον αὐτὸν ἐπὶ τῶν ἵππων, καὶ ἔθαψαν αὐτὸν μετὰ τῶν πατέρων αὐτοῦ ἐν πόλει Δαυείδ.
They carried him back on horses and buried him with his fathers in the City of Judah (note: Most Hebrew manuscripts; some Hebrew manuscripts, LXX, Vulgate, and Syriac City of David; see 2 Kings 14:20.).
