καὶ ἀνέστη Δαυεὶδ ἐκεῖθεν καὶ ἐκάθισεν ἐν τοῖς στενοῖς Ἐνγάδδει.
After Saul had returned from pursuing the Philistines, he was told, “David is in the wilderness of En-gedi.”
Καὶ ἐγενήθη ὡς ἀνέστρεψεν Σαοὺλ ἀπὸ ὄπισθεν τῶν ἀλλοφύλων, καὶ ἀπηγγέλη αὐτῷ λεγόντων ὅτι Δαυεὶδ ἐν τῇ ἐρήμῳ ’Ενγάδδει.
So Saul took three thousand chosen men from all Israel and went to look for David and his men in the region of the Rocks of the Wild Goats.
καὶ ἔλαβεν μεθ’ ἑαυτοῦ τρεῖς χιλιάδας ἀνδρῶν ἐκλεκτοὺς ἐκ παντὸς ’ισραήλ, καὶ ἐπορεύθη ζητεῖν τὸν Δαυεὶδ καὶ τοὺς ἄνδρας αὐτοῦ ἐπὶ πρόσωπον Ἐδδαιέμ.
Soon Saul came to the sheepfolds along the road, where there was a cave, and he went in to relieve himself (note: Literally cover his feet, a euphemism for relieving oneself). And David and his men were hiding in the recesses of the cave.
καὶ ἦλθεν εἰς τὰς ἀγέλας τὰς ἐπὶ τῆς ὁδοῦ, καὶ ἦν ἐκεῖ σπήλαιον· καὶ Σαοὺλ παρασκευάσασθαι, καὶ Δαυεὶδ καὶ οἱ ἄνδρες αὐτοῦ ἐσώτερον τοῦ σπηλαίου ἐκάθηντο.
So David’s men said to him, “This is the day about which the LORD said to you, ‘Behold, I will deliver your enemy into your hand, that you may do with him as you wish.’” Then David crept up and stealthily cut off a corner of Saul’s robe.
καὶ εἶπον οἱ ἄνδρες Δαυεὶδ πρὸς ἰδοὺ ἡ ἡμέρα αὕτη ἢν εἶπεν κύριος πρὸς σέ, παραδοῦναι τὸν σου εἰς τὰς χεῖράς σου· καὶ ποιήσεις αὐτῷ ὡς ἀγαθὸν ἐν ὀφθαλμοῖς σου. καὶ ἀνέστη Δαυεὶδ καὶ ἀφεῖλεν τὸ πτερύγιον τῆς διπλοίδος τῆς Σαοὺλ λαθραίως.
Afterward, David’s conscience was stricken because he had cut off the corner of Saul’s robe.
καὶ ἐγενήθη μετὰ ταῦτα καὶ ἐπάταξεν καρδία Δαυεὶδ αὐτόν, ὅτι ἀφεῖλεν τὸ πτερύγιον τῆς διπλοίδος αὐτοῦ.
So he said to his men, “The LORD forbid that I should do such a thing to my master, the LORD’s anointed. May I never lift my hand against him, since he is the LORD’s anointed.”
καὶ εἶπεν Δαυεὶδ πρὸς τοὺς ἄνδρας αὐτοῦ Μηδαμῶς μοι παρὰ κυρίου, εἰ ποιήσω τὸ ῥῆμα τοῦτο τῷ χριστῷ κυρίου, ἐπενέγκαι χεῖρά μου ἐπ’ αὐτόν· ὅτι χριστὸς κυρίου ἐστὶν οὗτος.
With these words David restrained his men, and he did not let them rise up against Saul. Then Saul left the cave and went on his way.
καὶ ἔπεισεν Δαυεὶδ τοὺς ἄνδρας αὐτοῦ ἐν λόγοις, καὶ οὐκ ἔδωκεν αὐτοῖς ἀναστάντας θῦσαι τὸν Σαούλ· καὶ ἀνέστη Σαοὺλ καὶ κατέβη τὴν ὁδόν.
After that, David got up, went out of the cave, and called out to Saul, “My lord the king!” When Saul looked behind him, David bowed facedown in reverence
καὶ ἀνέστη Δαυεὶδ ὀπίσω αὐτοῦ ἐκ τοῦ σπηλαίου· καὶ ἐβόησεν Δαυεὶδ ὀπίσω Σαοὺλ λέγων κύριε βασιλεῦ· καὶ ἐπέβλεψεν Σαοὺλ εἰς τὰ ὀπίσω αὐτοῦ, καὶ ἔκυψεν Δαυεὶδ ἐπὶ πρόσωπον αὐτοῦ ἐπὶ τὴν γῆν καὶ προσεκύνησεν αἠτῷ.
and said to Saul, “Why do you listen to the words of men who say, ‘Look, David intends to harm you’?
καὶ εἶπεν Δαυεὶδ πρὸς Σαούλ Ἵνα τί ἀκούεις τῶν λόγων τοῦ λαοῦ λεγόντων Ἴδου Δαυεὶδ ζητεῖ τὴν ψυχήν σου ;
Behold, this day you have seen with your own eyes that the LORD delivered you into my hand in the cave. I was told to kill you, but I spared you and said, ‘I will not lift my hand against my lord, since he is the LORD’s anointed.’
ἰδοὺ ἐν τῇ ἡμέρᾳ ταύτῃ ἑοράκασιν οἱ ὀφθαλμοί σου ὡς παρέδωκέν σε κύριος σήμερον εἰς χεῖρά μου ἐν τῷ σπηλαίῳ, καὶ οὐκ ἠβουλήθην ἀποκτεῖναί κτεῖναί σε, καὶ ἐφεισάμην σου καὶ εἶπα οὐκ ἐποίσω χεῖρά μου ἐπὶ κύριόν μου, ὅτι χριστὸς κυρίου οὗτός ἐστιν.
See, my father, look at the corner of your robe in my hand. For I cut it off, but I did not kill you. Know and see that there is no evil or rebellion in my hands. I have not sinned against you, even though you are hunting me down to take my life.
καὶ ἰδοὺ τὸ πτερύγιον τῆς διπλοίδος σου ἐν τῇ χειρί μου· ἐγὼ ἀφῄρηκα τὸ πτερύγιον καὶ οὐκ ἀπέκτανκά σε· καὶ γνῶθι καὶ ἴδε σήμερον ὅτι οὐκ ἔστιν κακία ἐν τῇ χειρί μου οὐδὲ ἀσέβεια καὶ ἀθέτησις, καὶ οὐχ ἡμάρτηκα εἰς σέ· καὶ σὺ δεσμεύεις τὴν ψυχήν μου λαβεῖν αὐτήν.
May the LORD judge between you and me, and may the LORD take vengeance on you, but my hand will never be against you.
δικάσαι κύριος ἀνὰ μέσον ἐμοῦ κα σοῦ, καὶ ἐκδικήσαι με κύριος ἐκ σοῦ, καὶ χείρ μου οὐκ ἔσται ἐπὶ σοί·
As the old proverb says, ‘Wickedness proceeds from the wicked.’ But my hand will never be against you.
καθὼς λέγεται χείρ μου οὐκ ἔσται ἐπὶ σέ.
Against whom has the king of Israel come out? Whom are you pursuing? A dead dog? A flea?
καὶ νῦν ὀπίσω τίνος σὺ ἐκπορεύῃ, βοσιλεῦ Ἰσραήλ ; ὀπίσω τίνος καταδιώκεις σύ; ὀπίσω κυνὸς τεθνηκότος καὶ ὀπίσω ψύλλου ἑνός.
May the LORD be our judge and decide between you and me. May He take notice and plead my case and deliver me from your hand.”
γένοιτο κύριος εἰς κριτὴν καὶ δικαστὴν ἀνὰ μέσον ἐμοῦ καὶ ἀνὰ μέσον σοῦ· ἴδοι κύριος καὶ κρίναι τὴν κρίσιν μου καὶ δικάσαι μοι ἐκ χειρός σου·
When David had finished saying these things, Saul called back, “Is that your voice, David my son?” Then Saul wept aloud
καὶ ἐγένετο ὡς συνετέλεσεν Δαυεὶδ τὰ ῥήματα ταῦτα λαλῶν πρὸς Σαούλ, καὶ εἶπεν Σαούλ Ἡ φωνή σου αὕτη, τέκνον Δαυείδ; καὶ ἦρεν τὴν φωνὴν αὐτοῦ Σαοὺλ καὶ ἔκλαυσεν.
and said to David, “You are more righteous than I, for you have rewarded me with good, though I have rewarded you with evil.
καὶ εἶπεν Σαοὺλ πρὸς Δουείδ Δίκαιος σὺ ὑπὲρ ἐμέ, ὅτι σὺ ἀνταπέδωκάς μοι ἀγαθά, ἐγὼ δὲ ἀνταπέδωκά σοι κακά.
And you have declared this day how you have treated me well, for when the LORD delivered me into your hand, you did not kill me.
καὶ σὺ ἀπήγγειλάς μοι σήμερον ἁ ἐποίησάς μοι ἀγαθά, ὡς ἀπέκλεισέν με Κύριος σήμερον εἰς χεῖράς σου κοὶ οὐκ ἀπέκτεινάς με·
When a man finds his enemy, does he let him go away unharmed? May the LORD reward you with good for what you have done for me this day.
καὶ ὅτι εἰ εὕροιτό τις τὸν ἐχθρὸν αὐτοῦ ἐν θλίψει καὶ ἐκπέμψαι αὐτὸν ἐν ὁδῷ ἀγαθῇ, καὶ κύριος ἀνταποτίσει αὐτῷ ἀγαθά, καθὼς πεποίηκας σήμερον.
Now I know for sure that you will be king and that the kingdom of Israel will be established in your hands.
καὶ νῦν ἰδοὺ ἐγὼ γινώσκω ὅτι βασιλεύων βασιλεύσεις, καὶ στήσεται ἐν χερσίν σου βασιλεία Ἰσραήλ.
So now, swear to me by the LORD that you will not cut off my descendants or wipe out my name from my father’s house.”
καὶ νῦν ὄμοσόν μοι ἐν Κύρῳ ὅτι οὐκ ἐξολεθρεύσεις τὸ σπέρμα μου ὀπίσω μου, καὶ οὐκ ἀφανιεῖς τὸ ὄνομά μου ἐκ του οἴκου τοῦ πατρός μου.
So David gave his oath to Saul. Then Saul returned home, but David and his men went up to the stronghold.
καὶ ὤμοσεν Δαυεὶδ τῷ Σαούλ. καὶ ἀπῆλθεν Σαοὺλ εἰς τὸν τόπον αὐτοῦ, καὶ Δαυεὶδ καὶ οἱ ἄνδρες αὐτοῦ ἀνέβησαν εἰς τὴν Μεσσαρὰ στενήν.
