Ἰωανθὰν καὶ εἶπεν τί πεποίηκα, καὶ τί τὸ ἀδίκημά μου, καὶ τί ἡμάρτηκα ἐνώπιον τοῦ πατρός σου ὅτι ἐπιζητεῖ τὴν ψυχήν μου ;
Then David fled from Naioth in Ramah. He came to Jonathan and asked, “What have I done? What is my iniquity? How have I sinned against your father, that he wants to take my life?”
καὶ εἶπεν αὐτῶ Ἰωναθάν μηδαμῶς σοι, οὐ μὴ ἀποθάνῃς· ἰδοὺ οὐ μὴ ποιήση ὁ πατήρ μου ῥῆμα μικρὸν καὶ οὐκ ἀποκαλύψει τὸ ὠτίον μου· καὶ τί ὅτι κρύψει ὁ ποτήρ μου τὸ ῥῆμα τοῦτο; οὐκ ἔστιν τοῦτο.
“Far from it!” Jonathan replied. “You will not die. Indeed, my father does nothing, great or small, without telling me. So why would he hide this matter from me? This cannot be true!”
καὶ ἀπεκρίθη Δαυεὶδ τῷ Ἰωανθὰν καὶ εἶπεν Γινώσκων οἶδεν ὁ πατήρ σου ὅτι εὕρηκα χάριν ἐν ὀφθαλμοῖς σου, καὶ εἶπεν μὴ γνῶναι τοῦτο Ἰωναθάν, μὴ οὐ βούληται· ἀλλὰ ζῇ κύριος καὶ ζῇ ἡ ψυχή σου, ὅτι καθὼς , ἐμπέπλησται ἀνὰ μέσον μου καὶ τοῦ θανάτου.
But David again vowed, “Your father knows very well that I have found favor in your eyes, and he has said, ‘Jonathan must not know of this, or he will be grieved.’ As surely as the LORD lives and as you yourself live, there is but a step between me and death.”
καὶ εἶπεν πρὸς Δαυείδ τί ἐπιθυμεῖ ἡ ψυχή σου, καὶ τί ποιήσω σοι;
Then Jonathan said to David, “Whatever you desire, I will do for you.”
καὶ εἶπεν Δαυεὶδ πρὸς Ἰωναθάν ἰδοὺ δὴ νεομηνία αὔριον, καὶ ἐγὼ καθίσας οὐ καθήσομαι φαγεῖν, καὶ ἐξαποστελεῖς με καὶ κρυβήσομαι ἐν τῶ πεδίω ἕως δείλης.
So David told him, “Look, tomorrow is the New Moon (note: That is, the New Moon feast; also in verses 18, 24, and 27), and I am supposed to dine with the king. Instead, let me go and hide in the field until the third evening from now.
ἐὰν ἐπισκεπτόμενος ἐπισκέψηταί με ὁ πατήρ σου, καὶ ἐρεῖς παραιτούμενος παρῃτήσατο ἀπ’ ἐμοῦ Δαυεὶδ δραμεῖν ἕως εἰς Βηθλέεμ τὴν πόλιν αὐτοῦ, ὅτι θυσία τῶν ἡμερῶν ἐκεῖ ὅλῃ τῇ φυλῇ.
If your father misses me at all, tell him, ‘David urgently requested my permission to hurry to Bethlehem, his hometown, because there is an annual sacrifice for his whole clan.’
ἐὰν τάδε εἴπῃ Ἀγαθῶς, εἰρήνη τῷ δούλῳ σου· καὶ ἐὰν σκληρῶς όποκριθῇ σοι, γνῶθι ὅτι συντετέλεσται ἡ κακία παρ’ αὐτοῦ.
If he says, ‘Good,’ then your servant is safe, but if he is enraged, you will know he has evil intentions.
καὶ ποιήσεις ἕλεος μετὰ τοῦ δούλου σου, ὅτι εἰσήγαγες εἰς διαθήκην Κυρίου τὸν δοῦλόν σου μετὰ σεαυτοῦ· καὶ εἰ ἔστιν ἀδικία ἐν τῷ δούλῳ σου, θανάτωσόν με σύ· καὶ ἕως τοῦ πατρός σου ἰνα τί οὕτως εἰσάγεις με;
Therefore show kindness to your servant, for you have brought me into a covenant with you before the LORD. If there is iniquity in me, then kill me yourself; why should you bring me to your father?”
καὶ εἶεν Ἰωναθάν Μηδαμῶς σοι, ὅτι ἐὰν γινώσκων γνῶ ὅτι συντετέλεσται ἡ κακία παρὰ τοῦ πατρός μου τοῦ ἐλθεῖν ἐπὶ σέ, καὶ ἐὰν μὴ ᾖ εἰς τὰς πόλεις σου, ἐγὼ ἀπαηέλλω σοι.
“Never!” Jonathan replied. “If I ever found out that my father had evil intentions against you, would I not tell you?”
καὶ εἶπεν Δαυλὶς πρὸς Ἰωναθάν τίς ἀπαγγείλῃ μοι ἐὰν ἀποκριθῇ ὁ πατήρ σου σκληρῶς;
Then David asked Jonathan, “Who will tell me if your father answers you harshly?”
καὶ εἶπεν Ἰωναθὰν πρὸς Δαυείδ Πορεύου καὶ μένε εἰς ἀγρόν· καἰ ἐκπορεύονται ἀμφότεροι εἰς ἀγρόν.
“Come,” he replied, “let us go out to the field.” So the two of them went out into the field,
Καὶ εἶπεν Ἰωναθὰν πρὸς Δαυείδ Κύριος ὁ θεὸς Ἰσραὴλ οἶδεν ὅτι ἀνακρινῶ τὸν πατέρα μου ὡς ἂν ὁ καιρὸς τρισσῶς, καὶ ἰδοὺ ἀγαθὸν ᾖ περὶ Δαυείδ, καὶ οὐ μὴ ἀποστείλω πρὸς σὲ εἰς ἀγρόν·
and Jonathan said, “By the LORD, the God of Israel, I will sound out my father by this time tomorrow or the next day. If he is favorable toward you, will I not send for you and tell you?
τάδε ποιήσαι ὁ θεὸς τῶ ἂν καὶ τάδε προσθείη· ὅτι ἀνοίσω τὰ κακὰ ἐπὶ σὲ καὶ ἀποκαλύψω τὸ ὠτίον σου, καὶ ἐξαποστελῶ σε καὶ ἀπελεύσῃ εἰς εἰρήνην, καὶ ἔσται κύριος μετὰ σοῦ καθὼς ἢν μετὰ τοῦ πατρός μου.
But if my father intends to bring evil on you, then may the LORD punish me, and ever so severely, if I do not tell you and send you on your way in safety. May the LORD be with you, just as He has been with my father.
καὶ μὲν ἔτι μου ζῶντος, καὶ ποιήσεις ἕλεος μετ’ ἐμοῦ· καὶ ἐὰν θανάτῳ ἀποθάνω, οὐκ ἐξαρεῖς ἕλεος σου ἀπὸ τοῦ οἴκου μου ἕως τοῦ αἰῶνος·
And as long as I live, treat me with the LORD’s loving devotion (note: Forms of the Hebrew chesed are translated here and in most cases throughout the Scriptures as loving devotion; the range of meaning includes love, goodness, kindness, faithfulness, and mercy, as well as loyalty to a covenant.), that I may not die,
καὶ εἰ μή, ἐν τῷ ἐξαίρειν Κύριον τοὺς ἐχθροὺς Δαυεὶδ ἕκαστον ἀπὸ προσώπου τῆς γῆς,
and do not ever cut off your loving devotion from my household—not even when the LORD cuts off every one of David’s enemies from the face of the earth.”
εὑρεθῆναι τὸ ὄνομα τοῦ Ιωναθὰν ἀπὸ τοῦ οἴκου Δαυείδ· καὶ ἐκζητήσαι κύριος ἐχθροὺς τοῦ Δαυείδ.
So Jonathan made a covenant with the house of David, saying, “May the LORD hold David’s enemies accountable.”
καὶ προσέθετο ἔτι Ἰωναθὰν ὀμόσαι τῷ Δαυείδ, ὅτι ἠγάπησεν ψυχὴν ἀγαπῶντος αὐτόν.
And Jonathan had David reaffirm his vow out of love for him, for Jonathan loved David as he loved himself.
καὶ εἶπεν Ἰωναθάν Αὔριον νουμηνία καὶ ἐπισκεπήσῃ, ὅτι ἐπισκεπήσεται καθέδρα σου.
Then Jonathan said to David, “Tomorrow is the New Moon, and you will be missed, because your seat will be empty.
καὶ τρισσεύσεις καὶ ἐπισκέψῃ καὶ ἥξεις εἰς τὸν τόπον σου οὗ κρυβῇς ἐν τῆ ἡμέρᾳ τῇ ἐργασίμῃ, καὶ καθήσῃ παρὰ τὸ ἐργὰβ ἐκεῖνο.
When you have stayed three days, hurry down to the place you hid on the day this trouble began, and remain beside the stone Ezel (note: Ezel means departure.).
καὶ ἐγὼ τρισσεύσω ταῖς σχίζαις ἀοντίζων, ἐκπέμπων εἰς τὴν Ἁρματταρεί.
I will shoot three arrows to the side of it, as if I were aiming at a target.
καὶ ἰδοὺ ἀποστέλλω τὸ παιδάριον λέγων Δεῦρο εὑρέ μοι τὴν γοῦζαν· ἐὰν εἴπω λέγων τῷ παιδαρίῳ Ὡδε ἡ σχίζα ἀπὸ σοῦ καὶ ὧαὶ λάβε αὐτήν, παραγίνου· ὅτι εἰρήνη σοι καὶ οὐκ ἔστιν λόγος Κυρίου, ζῇ Κύριος.
Then I will send a boy and say, ‘Go, find the arrows!’ Now, if I expressly say to him, ‘Look, the arrows are on this side of you; bring them,’ then come, because as surely as the LORD lives, it is safe for you, and there is no danger.
ἐὰν τάδε εἴπω τῶ νεανίσκῳ Ὧδε ἡ σχίζα ἀπὸ σοῦ καὶ ἐπέκεινα, πορεύου, ὅτι ἐξαπέσταλκέν σε κύριος.
But if I say to the young man, ‘Look, the arrows are beyond you,’ then you must go, for the LORD has sent you away.
καὶ τὸ ῥῆμα ὃ ἐλαλήσαμεν ἐγὼ καὶ σύ, ἰδοὺ Κύριος μάρτυς ἀνὰ μέσον ἐμοῦ καὶ σοῦ ἕως αἰῶνος.
And as for the matter you and I have discussed, the LORD is a witness between you and me forever.”
Καὶ κρύπτεται Δαυεὶδ ἐν ἀγρῷ, καὶ παραγίνεται ὁ μὴν καὶ ἔρχεται ὁ βασιλεὺς ἐπὶ τὴν τράπεζαν τοῦ φαγεῖν.
So David hid in the field, and when the New Moon had come, the king sat down to eat.
καὶ ἐκάθισεν ἐπὶτὴν καθέδραν αὐτοῦ ὡς ἅπαξ καὶ ἅπαξ ἐπὶ τῆς καθέδρας παρὰ τοῖχον, καὶ προέφθασεν τὸν Ἰωναθάν, Δαυείδ.
He sat in his usual place by the wall, opposite Jonathan and beside Abner, but David’s place was empty.
καὶ ἐκάθισεν Ἀβεννὴρ ἐκ πλαγίων Σαούλ, καὶ ἐπεσκέπη ὁ τόπος ὅτι Σύμπτωμα φαίνεται μὴ καθαρὸς εἶναι, ὅτι οὐ κεκαθάρισται.
Saul said nothing that day because he thought, “Something has happened to David to make him ceremonially unclean—surely he is unclean.”
καὶ ἐγενήθη τῇ ἐπαύριον τοῦ μηνὸς τῇ ἡμέρᾳ τῇ δευτέρᾳ καὶ ἐπεσκέπη ὁ τόπος τοῦ Δαυείδ, καὶ εἶπεν Σαοὺλ πρὸς Ἰωναθὰν τὸν υἱὸν αὐτοῦ Τί ὅτι οὐ παραγέγονεν ὁ υἱὸς Ἰεσσαὶ καὶ ἐχθὲς καὶ σήμερον ἐπὶ τὴν τράπεζαν ;
But on the day after the New Moon, the second day, David’s place was still empty, and Saul asked his son Jonathan, “Why hasn’t the son of Jesse come to the meal either yesterday or today?”
καὶ ἀπεκρίθη Ἰωναθὰν τῷ Σαοὺλ καὶ εἶπεν αὐτῷ παρῄτηται Δαυεὶδ παρ’ ἐμοῦ ἕως εἰς Βηθλέεμ τὴν πόλιν αὐτοῦ πορευθῆναι,
Jonathan answered, “David urgently requested my permission to go to Bethlehem,
καὶ εἶπεν Ἐξαπόστειλον δή με, ὅτι θυσία τῆς φυλῆς ἡμῖν ἐν τῇ πόλει καὶ ἐνετείλαντο πρὸς μὲ οἱ ἀδελφοί μου· καὶ νῦν εἰ εὕρηκα χάριν ἐν ὀφθαλμοῖς σου, διασωθήσομαι δὴ κοὶ ὄψομαι τοὺς ἀδελφούς μου· διὰ τοῦτο οὐ παραγέγονεν ἐν ἐπὶ τὴν τράπεζαν τοῦ βασιλέως.
saying, ‘Please let me go, because our clan is holding a sacrifice in the city, and my brother has told me to be there. So now, if I have found favor in your eyes, please let me go and see my brothers.’ That is why he has not come to the king’s table.”
καὶ ἐθυμώθη ὀργῇ Σαοὺλ ἐπὶ ’Ιωναθὰν σφόδρα καὶ εἶπεν αὐτῷ αὐτομολούντων, οὐ γὰρ οἶδα ὅτι μέτοχος εἶ σὺ τῷ υἱῷ εἰς αἰσχύνην σου καὶ εἰς αἰσχύνην ἀποκαλύψεως μητρός σου ;
Then Saul’s anger burned against Jonathan, and he said to him, “You son of a perverse and rebellious woman! Do I not know that you have chosen the son of Jesse to your own shame and to the shame of the mother who bore you?
ὅτι πάσας τὰς ἡμέρας ἃς ὁ υἱὸς Ἰεσσαὶ ζῇ ἐπὶ τῆς γῆς οὐχ ἑτοιμασθήσεται ἡ βασιλεία σου· νῦν οὖν ἀποστείλας λάβε τὸν νεανίαν, ὅτι υἱὸς θανάτου οὗτος.
For as long as the son of Jesse lives on this earth, neither you nor your kingdom shall be established. Now send for him and bring him to me, for he must surely die!”
καὶ ἀπεκρίθη ἀπεκρίθη τῷ Σαούλ Ἵνα τί ἀποθνήσκει; τί πεποίηκεν ;
“Why must he be put to death?” Jonathan replied. “What has he done?”
καὶ ἐπῆρεν Σαοὺλ τὸ δόρυ ἐπὶ Ἰωναθὰν τοῦ θανατῶσαι αὐτόν, καὶ ἔγνω Ἰωναθὰν ὅτι συντετέλεσται ἡ κακία αὕτη παρὰ τοῦ πατρὸς αὐτοῦ θανατῶσαι τὸν Δαυείδ.
Then Saul hurled his spear at Jonathan to kill him. So Jonathan knew that his father was determined to kill David.
καὶ ἀνεπήδησεν Ἰωναθὰν ἀπὸ τῆς τραπέζης ἐν ὀργῇ θυμοῦ, καὶ οὐκ ἔφαγεν ἐν τῇ δευτέρᾳ τοῦ μηνὸς ὄρτον, ὅτι συνετέλεσεν ἐπ’ αὐτὸν ὁ πατὴρ αὐτοῦ.
Jonathan got up from the table in fierce anger and did not eat any food that second day of the month, for he was grieved by his father’s shameful treatment of David.
Καὶ ἐγενήθη πρωὶ καὶ ἐξῆλθεν ’Ιωναθὰν εἰς ἀγρον, καθὼς ἐτάξατο εἰς τὸ μαρτύριον Δαυείδ, καὶ παιδάριον μικρὸν μετ’ αὐτοῦ.
In the morning Jonathan went out to the field for the appointment with David, and a small boy was with him.
καὶ εἶπεν τῷ παιδαρίῳ Δράμε, εὑρέ μοι τὰς σχίζας ἐν αἷς ἐγὼ ἀκοντίζω· καὶ τό παιδάριον ἔδραμε, καὶ αὐτὸς ἠκόντιζε τῇ σχίζη, καὶ παρήγαγεν αὐτήν.
He said to the boy, “Run and find the arrows I shoot.” And as the boy ran, Jonathan shot an arrow beyond him.
καὶ ἦλθεν τὸ παιδάριον ἕως τοῦ τόπου τῆς σχίζης οὗ ἠκόντιζεν Ἰωναθάν·
When the boy reached the place where Jonathan’s arrow had fallen, Jonathan called to him, “Isn’t the arrow beyond you?”
καὶ ἀνεβόησεν Ἰωναθὰν ὀπίσω τοῦ νεανίου καὶ εἶπεν Ἐκεῖ ἡ σχίζα ἀπὸ σοῦ καὶ ἐπέκεινα· καὶ ἀνεβόησεν Ἰωναθὰν ὀπίσω τοῦ παιδαρίου αὐτοῦ λέγων ταχύνας σπεῦσον καὶ μὴ στῇς· καὶ ἀνέλεξε τὸ παιδάριον Ἰωναθὰν τὰς σχίζας πρὸς τὸν κύριον αὐτοῦ.
Then Jonathan cried out, “Hurry! Make haste! Do not delay!” So the boy picked up the arrow and returned to his master.
καὶ τὸ παιδάριον οὐκ ἔγνω οὐθὲν παρὲξ Ἰωναθὰν καὶ Δαυείδ.
But the boy did not know anything; only Jonathan and David knew the arrangement.
καὶ Ἰωναθὰν ἔδωκεν τὰ σκεύη αὐτοῦ ἐπὶ τὸ παιδάριον αὐτοῦ, καὶ τῷ παιδαρίῳ αὐτοῦ Πορεύου, εἴσελθε εἰς τὴν πόλιν.
Then Jonathan gave his equipment to the boy and said, “Go, take it back to the city.”
καὶ ὡς εἰσῆλθεν τὸ παιδάριον, καὶ Δαυεὶδ ἀνέστη ἀπὸ τοῦ ἀργὰβ καὶ ἔπεσεν ἐπὶ πρόσωπον αὐτοῦ καὶ προσεκύνησεν αὐτῷ τρίς, καὶ κατεφίλησεν ἕκαστος τὸν πλησίον αὐτοῦ, καὶ ἔκλαυσεν ἕκαστος τῷ πλησίον αὐτοῦ ἕως συντελείας μεγάλης.
When the young man had gone, David got up from the south side of the stone, fell facedown, and bowed three times. Then he and Jonathan kissed each other and wept together—though David wept more.
καὶ εἶπεν Ἰωναθάν Πορεύου εἰς εἰρήνην, καὶ ὡς ὀμωμόκαμεν ἡμεῖς ἀμφότεροι ἐν ὀνόματι κυρίου λέγοντες κύριος ἔσται μάρτυς ἀνὰ μέσον ἐμοῦ καὶ σοῦ, καὶ ἀνὰ μέσον τοῦ σπέρματός σου ἕως αἰῶνος.
And Jonathan said to David, “Go in peace, for the two of us have sworn in the name of the LORD, saying, ‘May the LORD be a witness between you and me, and between your descendants and mine forever.’” Then David got up and departed, and Jonathan went back into the city.
