καὶ ἐλάλησεν Σαοὺλ πρὸς Ἲωναθὰν τὸν υἱὸν αὐτοῦ καὶ πρὸς πάντας τοὺς παῖδας αὐτοῦ θανατῶσαι τὸν Δαυείδ.
Then Saul ordered his son Jonathan and all his servants to kill David. But Jonathan delighted greatly in David,
καὶ Ἰωναθὰν υἱὸς Σαοὺλ ᾑρεῖτο τὸν Δαυεὶδ σφόδρα· καὶ ἀπήγγειλεν Ἲωναθὰν τῷ Δαυεὶδ λέγων Σαοὺλ ζητεῖ θανατῶσαί σε· φύλαξαι οὖν αὔριον πρωί, κοὶ κρύβηθι καὶ κάθισον κρυβῇ·
so he warned David, saying, “My father Saul intends to kill you. Be on your guard in the morning; find a secret place and hide there.
καὶ ἐγὼ ἐξελεύσομαι καὶ στήσομοι ἐχόμενος τοῦ πατρός μου ἐν ἀγρῷ οὗ ἐὰν ἦς ἐκεῖ, καὶ ἐγὼ λαλήσω περὶ σοῦ πρὸς τὸν πατέρα μου· καὶ ὄψομαι ὅ τι ἐὰν ᾖ, καὶ ἀπαηελῶ σοι.
I will go out and stand beside my father in the field where you are, so I can ask about you. And if I find out anything, I will tell you.”
καὶ ἐλάλησεν Ἰωναθὰν περὶ Δαυεὶδ ἀγαθὰ πρὸς Σαοὺλ τὸν πατέρα αὐτοῦ, καὶ εἶπεν πρὸς αὐτόν Μὴ ἁμαρτησάτω ὁ βασιλεὺς εἰς τὸν δοῦλόν σου Δαυείδ, ὅτι οὐχ ἡμάρτηκεν εἰς σέ, καὶ τὰ ποιήματα αὑτοῦ ἀγαθὰ σφόδρα·
Then Jonathan spoke well of David to his father Saul and said to him, “The king should not sin against his servant David; he has not sinned against you. In fact, his actions have been highly beneficial to you.
καὶ ἔθετο τὴν ψυχὴν αὐτοῦ ἐν τῇ χειρὶ αὐτοῦ καὶ ἐπάταξεν τὸν ἀλλόφυλον, καὶ ἐποίησεν κύριος σωτηρίαν μεγάλην, καὶ πᾶς Ἰσραὴλ εἶδον καὶ ἐχάρησαν· καὶ τί τί ἁμαρτάνεις εἰς αἷμα ἀθῷον θανατῶσαι τὸν Δαυεὶδ δωρεάν;
He took his life in his hands when he struck down the Philistine, and the LORD worked a great salvation for all Israel. You saw it and rejoiced, so why would you sin against innocent blood by killing David for no reason?”
καὶ ἤκουσεν Σαοὺλ τῆς φωνῆς Ἰωναθάν, καὶ ὤμοσεν Σοοὺλ λέγων νῇ κύριος, εἰ ἀποθανεῖται.
Saul listened to the voice of Jonathan and swore an oath: “As surely as the LORD lives, David will not be put to death.”
καὶ ἐκάλεσεν Ἰωναθὰν τὸν Δαυεὶδ καὶ ἀπήγγειλεν αὐτῷ πάντα τὰ ῥήματα ταῦτα· καὶ εἰσήγαγεν Ἰωναθὰν τὸν Δαυεὶδ πρὸς Σαούλ, καὶ ἦν ἐνώπιον αὐτοῦ ὡσεὶ ἐχθὲς καὶ τρίτην ἡμέραν.
So Jonathan summoned David and told him all these things. Then Jonathan brought David to Saul, and David was with Saul as before.
Καὶ προσέθετο ὁ πόλεμος γενέσθαι πρὸς Δαυείδ· καὶ κατίσχυσεν Δαυεὶδ καὶ ἐπολέμησεν τοὺς ἀλλοφύλους, καὶ ἐπάταξεν ἐν οὐτοῖς πληγὴν μεγάλην σφόδρα, καὶ ἔφυγον ἐκ προσώπου αὐτοῦ.
When war broke out again, David went out and fought the Philistines and struck them with such a mighty blow that they fled before him.
καὶ ἐγένετο πνεῦμα θεοῦ πονηρὸν ἐπὶ Σαούλ, καὶ αὐτὸς ἐν οἴκῳ καθεύδων, καὶ δόρυ ἐν τῇ χειρὶ αὐτοῦ, καὶ Δαυεὶδ ἔψαλλεν ταῖς χερσὶν αὐτοῦ.
But as Saul was sitting in his house with his spear in his hand, a spirit of distress (note: Or a harmful spirit) from the LORD came upon him. While David was playing the harp,
καὶ ἐζήτει Σαοὺλ πατάξαι τὸ δόρυ εἰς Δαυείδ, καὶ ἀπέστη Δαυεὶδ ἐκ προσώπου Σαούλ· καὶ ἐπάταξεν τὸ δόρυ εἰς τὸν καὶ Δαυεὶδ ἀνεχώρησεν καὶ διεσώθη.
Saul tried to pin him to the wall with his spear. But David eluded him and the spear struck the wall. And David fled and escaped that night.
καὶ ἐγενήθη ἐν τῇ νυκτὶ ἐκείνῃ καὶ ἀπέστειλεν Σαοὺλ ἀγγέλους εἰς οἶκον Δαυεὶδ φυλάξαι αὐτόν, θανατῶσαι αὐτὸν πρωί· καὶ ἀπήγγειλεν τῷ Δαυεὶδ Μελχὸλ ἡ γυνὴ αὐτοῦ λέγουσα Ἐὰν μὴ σὺ σώσῃς τὴν ψυχὴν σαυτοῦ τὴν νύκτα ταύτην, αὔριον θανατωθήσῃ.
Then Saul sent messengers to David’s house to watch him and kill him in the morning. But David’s wife Michal warned him, “If you do not run for your life tonight, tomorrow you will be dead!”
καὶ κατάγει ἡ Μελχὸλ τὸν Δαυεὶδ καὶ ἀπῆλθεν καὶ ἔφυγεν καὶ σώζεται.
So Michal lowered David from the window, and he ran away and escaped.
καὶ ἔλαβεν ἡ Μελχὸλ τὰ κενοτάφια καὶ ἔθετο ἐπὶ τὴν κλίνην, καὶ ἧπαρ τῶν αἰγῶν ἔθετο πρὸς κεφαλῆς αὐτοῦ, καὶ ἐκάλυψεν αὐτὰ ἱματίῳ.
Then Michal took a household idol (note: Or a household god; Hebrew teraphim; also in verse 16) and laid it in the bed, placed some goat hair on its head, and covered it with a garment.
καὶ ἀπέστειλεν Σαοὺλ ἀηέλους λαβεῖν τὸν Δαυείδ, καὶ λέγουσιν ἐνοχλεῖσθαι αὐτόν.
When Saul sent the messengers to seize David, Michal said, “He is ill.”
καὶ ἀποστέλλει ἐπὶ τὸν Δαυεὶδ λέγων Ἀγάγετε αὐτὸν ἐπὶ τῆς κλίνης πρὸς μὲ τοῦ θανατῶσαι αὐτόν.
But Saul sent the messengers back to see David and told them, “Bring him up to me in his bed so I can kill him.”
καὶ ἔρχονται οἱ ἄηελοι, καὶ ἰδοὺ τὰ κενοτάφια ἐπὶ τῆς κλίνης, καὶ ἧπαρ τῶν αἰγῶν πρὸς κεφαλῆς αὐτοῦ.
And when the messengers entered, there was the idol in the bed with the goat hair on its head.
καὶ εἶπεν Σαοὺλ τῆ Μελχόλ Ἵνα τί οὕτως παρελογίσω με, καὶ ἐξαπέστειλας τὸν ἐχθρόν μου καὶ καὶ εἶπεν Μελχὸλ τῷ Σαούλ Αὒτὸς εἶπεν Ἐφαπόστειλόν με· εἰ θανατώσω σε.
And Saul said to Michal, “Why did you deceive me like this? You sent my enemy away, and he has escaped!” Michal replied, “He said to me, ‘Help me get away, or I will kill you!’”
καὶ Δαυεὶδ ἔφυγεν καὶ διεσώθη, καὶ παραπρὸς Σαμουὴλ εἰς Ἁρμαθάιμ, καὶ ἀπαγγέλλει αὐτῷ πάντα ὅσα ἐποίησεν αὐτῷ Σαούλ· καὶ ἐπορεύθη Δαυεὶδ καὶ Σαμουήλ, καὶ ἐκάθισαν ἐν Ἀυὰθ ἐν Ῥαμά.
So David ran away and escaped. And he went to Samuel at Ramah and told him all that Saul had done to him. Then he and Samuel went to Naioth and stayed there.
καὶ ἀπηγγέλη τῷ Σαοὺλ λέγοντες Ἴδου Δαυεὶδ ἐν Ἀυὰθ ἐν Ῥαμά.
When Saul was told that David was at Naioth in Ramah,
καὶ ἀπέστειλεν Σαοὺλ ἀγγέλους λαβεῖν τὸν Δαυείδ· κοὶ εἶδαν τὴν ἐκκλησίαν τῶν προφητῶν, καὶ Σαμουὴλ εἱστήκει καθεστηκὼς ἐπ’ αὐτῶν. καὶ ἐγενήθη ἐπὶ τοὺς ἀγγέλους τοῦ Σαοὺλ πνεῦμα θεοῦ, καὶ προφητεύουσιν.
he sent messengers to seize him. But when they saw the group of prophets prophesying, with Samuel leading them, the Spirit of God came upon them, and Saul’s messengers also began to prophesy.
καὶ ἀπηγγέλη τῷ Σαούλ, καὶ ἀπέστειλεν ἀγγέλους ἑτέρους, καὶ ἐπροφήτευσαν καὶ αὐτοί· καὶ προσέθετο Σαοὺλ ἀποστεῖλαι ἀγγέλους τρίτους, καὶ ἀπροφήτευσαν καὶ αὐτοί.
When this was reported to Saul, he sent more messengers, but they began to prophesy as well. So Saul tried again and sent messengers a third time, and even they began to prophesy.
καὶ ἐθυμώθη ὀργῇ Σαούλ, καὶ ἐπορεύθη καὶ αὐτὸς εἰς Ἁρμαθάιμ, καὶ ἔρχεται ἕως τοῦ φρέατος τοῦ ἅλω τοῦ ἐν τῷ Σεφεί, κα ἠρώτησεν καὶ εἶπεν Ποῦ Σαμουὴλ καὶ Δαυείδ; καὶ εἶπεν Ἴδου ἐν Ἀυὰθ ἐν Ῥαμά.
Finally, Saul himself left for Ramah and came to the large cistern at Secu, where he asked, “Where are Samuel and David?” “At Naioth in Ramah,” he was told.
καὶ ἐπορεύθη ἐκεῖθεν ἐν Ἀυὰθ καὶ ἐγενήθη καὶ ἐπ’ αὐτῷ πνεῦμα θεοῦ, καὶ ἐπορεύετο ἕως τοῦ ἐλθεῖν αὐτὸν εἰς Ἀυὰθ ἐν Ῥαμά.
So Saul went to Naioth in Ramah. But the Spirit of God came upon even Saul, and he walked along prophesying until he came to Naioth in Ramah.
καὶ ἐξεδύσατο τὰ ἱμάτια αὐτοῦ καὶ ἐπροφήτευσεν ἐνώπιον αὐτῶν, καὶ ἔπεσεν γυμνὸς ὅλην τήν ἡμέραν ἐκείνην καὶ ὅλην τὴν νύκτα· διὰ τοῦτο ἔλεγον Εἰ καὶ Σαοὺλ ἐν ἐν προφήταις:
Then Saul stripped off his robes and also prophesied before Samuel. And he collapsed and lay naked all that day and night. That is why it is said, “Is Saul also among the prophets?”
