Καὶ συνάγουσιν ἀλλόφυλοι τὰς παρεμβολὰς αὐτῶν εἰς πόλεμον, καὶ συνάγονται εἰς Σοκχὼθ τῆς Ἰδουμαίας, καὶ παρεμβάλλουσιν ἀνὰ οκχὼθ καὶ ἀνὰ μέσον Ἀζηκὰ Ἐφερμέμ.
Now the Philistines gathered their forces for war at Socoh in Judah, and they camped between Socoh and Azekah in Ephes-dammim.
καὶ Σαοὺλ κα ὁ Ἰσραὴλ συνάγονται καὶ παρεμβάλλουσιν ἐν τῇ κοιλάδι· αὐτοὶ παρατάσσονται εἰς πόλεμον ἐξ ἐναντίας ἀλλοφύλων.
Saul and the men of Israel assembled and camped in the Valley of Elah, arraying themselves for battle against the Philistines.
καὶ ἀλλόφυλοι ἐπὶ τοῦ ὄρους ἐνταῦθα, καὶ Ἰσραὴλ ἵσταται ἐπὶ τοῦ ὄρους ἀνὰ μέσον αὐτῶν.
The Philistines stood on one hill and the Israelites stood on another, with the valley between them.
καὶ ἐξῆλθεν ἀνὴρ δυνατὸς ἐκ τῶν ἀλλοφύλων, Γολιὰθ ὄνομα αὐτῷ, ἐκ Γέθ· ὕψος αὐτοῦ τεσσάρων πήχεων καὶ σπιθαμῆς.
Then a champion named Goliath, who was from Gath, came out from the Philistine camp. He was six cubits and a span in height (note: Goliath was approximately 9 feet 9 inches or 297 centimeters tall; LXX, DSS, and Josephus four cubits and a span in height (approximately 6 feet 9 inches or 206 centimeters tall).),
καὶ περικεφαλαία ἐπὶ τῆς κεφαλῆς αὐτοῦ, καὶ θώρακα ἁλυσιδωτὸν αὐτὸς ἐνδεδυκώς, καὶ ὁ σταθμὸς
and he had a bronze helmet on his head. He wore a bronze coat of mail weighing five thousand shekels (note: 5,000 shekels is approximately 125.6 pounds or 57 kilograms.),
τοῦ θώρακος αὐτοῦ πέντε χιλιάδες σίκλων χαλκοῦ καὶ ἀσπὶς ἀσπὶς χαλκὴ ἀνὰ τῶν ὤμων αὐτοῦ.
and he had armor of bronze on his legs and a javelin of bronze slung between his shoulders.
καὶ ὁ κοντὸς τοῦ δόρατος αὐτοῦ ὡσεὶ μέσα. ὑφαινόντων, καὶἡ λόγχη αὐτοῦ ἑξακοσίων σίκλων σιδήρου· καὶ ὁ αἴρων τὰ ὅπλα αὐτοῦ προεπορεύετο αὐτοῦ.
The shaft of his spear was like a weaver’s beam, and its iron point weighed six hundred shekels (note: 600 shekels is approximately 15.1 pounds or 6.8 kilograms.). In addition, his shield bearer went before him.
καὶ ἀνέστη καὶ ἀνεβόησεν εἰς τὴν παράταξιν Ἰσραὴλ καὶ εἶπεν αὐτοῖς τί ἐκπορεύεσθε παρατάξασθαι πολέμῳ ἐξ ἐναντίας ἡμῶν ; οὐκ ἐγώ εἰμι ἀλλόφυλος, καὶ ὑμαῖς Ἑβραῖοι καὶ Σαούλ; ἐκλέξασθε ἑαυτοῖς ἄνδρα καὶ καταβήτω πρὸς μέ.
And Goliath stood and shouted to the ranks of Israel, “Why do you come out and array yourselves for battle? Am I not a Philistine, and are you not servants of Saul? Choose one of your men and have him come down against me.
καὶ ἐὰν δυνηθῇ πρὸς ἐμὲ πολεμῆσαι καὶ ἐὰν πατάξῃ με, καὶ ἐσόμεθα ὑμῖν εἰς δούλους· ἐὰν δὲ ἐγὼ δυνηθῶ καὶ πατάξω αὐτὸν, ἔσεσθε ἡμῖν εἰς δούλους καὶ δουλεύσετε ἡμῖν.
If he is able to fight me and kill me, then we will be your servants. But if I prevail against him and kill him, then you shall be our servants and work for us.”
καὶ εἶπεν ὁ ἀλλόφυλος ἰδοὺ ἐγὼ ὠνείδισα τὴν παράταξιν Ἰσραὴλ σήμερον ἐν τῇ ἡμέρᾳ ταύτῃ· δότε μοι ἄνδρα καὶ μονομαχήσομεν ἀμφότεροι.
Then the Philistine said, “I defy the ranks of Israel this day! Give me a man to fight!”
καὶ ἤκουσεν Σαοὺλ καὶ πᾶς Ἰσραὴλ τὰ ῥήματα τοῦ ἀλλοφύλου ταῦτα, καὶ ἐξέστησαν καὶ ἐφοβήθησαν σφόδρα.
On hearing the words of the Philistine, Saul and all the Israelites were dismayed and greatly afraid.
Καὶ εἶπεν Δαυεὶδ πρὸς Σαούλ Μὴ δὴ συνπεσέτω καρδία τοῦ κυρίου μου ἐπ’ αὐτόν· ὁ δοῦλός σου πορεύσεται καὶ πολεμήσει μετὰ τοῦ ἀλλοφύλου τούτου.
And David said to Saul, “Let no man’s heart fail on account of this Philistine. Your servant will go and fight him!”
καὶ εἶπεν Σαοὺλ πρὸς Δαυείδ Οὐ μὴ δύνῃ πορευθῆναι πρὸς τὸν ἀλλόφυλον τοῦ πολεμεῖν μετ’ αὐτοῦ, ὅτι παιδάριον εἶ σύ, καὶ αὐτὸς ἀνὴρ πολεμιστὴς ἐκ νεότητος αὐτοῦ.
But Saul replied, “You cannot go out against this Philistine to fight him. You are just a boy, and he has been a warrior from his youth.”
καὶ εἶπεν Δαυεὶδ πρὸς Σαούλ Ποιμαίνων ἦν ὁ δοῦλός σου τῷ πατρὶ αὐτοῦ ἐν τῷ ποιμνίῳ· καὶ ὅταν ἤρχετο ὁ λέων καὶ ἡ ἄρκος καὶ ἐλάμβανεν πρόβατον ἐκ τῆς ἀγέλης,
David replied, “Your servant has been tending his father’s sheep, and whenever a lion or a bear came and carried off a lamb from the flock,
καὶ ἐξεπορευόμην ὀπίσω αὐτοῦ καὶ ἐπάταξα αὐτόν, καὶ ἐξέσπασα ἐκ τοῦ στόματος αὐτοῦ· καὶ εἰ ἐπανίστατο ἐπ’ ἐμέ, καὶ ἐκράτησα τοῦ φάρυγγος αὐτοῦ καὶ ἐπάταξα καὶ ἐθανάτωσα αὐτόν.
I went after it, struck it down, and delivered the lamb from its mouth. If it reared up against me, I would grab it by its fur, strike it down, and kill it.
καὶ τὴν ἄρκον ἔτυπτεν ὁ δοῦλός σου καὶ τὸν λέοντα, καὶ ὦσται ὁ ἀλλόφυλος ὁ ἀπερίτμητος ὡς ἱν τούτων· οὐχὶ πορεύσομαι καὶ πατάξω αὐτόν, καὶ ἀφελῶ σήμερον ὄνειδος ἐξ Ἰσραήλ; διότι τίς ὁ ἀπερίτμητος οὗτος ὃς ὠνείδισεν παράταξιν θεοῦ ζῶντος ;
Your servant has killed lions and bears; this uncircumcised Philistine will be like one of them, for he has defied the armies of the living God.”
Κύριος ὃς ἐξείλατό με ἐκ χειρὸς τοῦ λέοντος καὶ ἐκ χειρὸς τῆς ἄρκου, αὐτὸς ἐξελεῖταί· με ἐκ χειρὸς τοῦ ἀλλοφύλου τοῦ ἀπεριτμήτου τούτου. καὶ εἶπεν Σαοὺλ πρὸς πρὸς Πορεύου, καὶ ἔσται κύριος μετὰ σοῦ.
David added, “The LORD, who delivered me from the claws of the lion and the bear, will deliver me from the hand of this Philistine.” “Go,” said Saul, “and may the LORD be with you.”
καὶ ἐνέδυσεν Σαοὺλ τὸν Δαυεὶδ μανδύαν καὶ περικεφαλαίαν χαλκῆν περὶ τὴν κεφαλὴν αὐτοῦ,
Then Saul clothed David in his own tunic, put a bronze helmet on his head, and dressed him in armor.
καὶ ἔχωσεν τὸν Δαυεὶδ τὴν ῥομφαίαν αὐτοῦ ἐπάνω τοῦ μονδύου αὐτοῦ· καὶ ἐκοπίασεν περιπατήσας ἅπαξ καὶ δίς. καὶ εἶπεν Δαυεὶδ πρὸς Σαούλ Οὐ μὴ δύνωμαι πορευθῆναι ἐν τούτοις, ὅτι οὐ πεπείραμαι· καὶ ἀφαιροῦσιν αὐτὰ ἀπ’ αὐτοῦ.
David strapped his sword over the tunic and tried to walk, but he was not accustomed to them. “I cannot walk in these,” David said to Saul. “I am not accustomed to them.” So David took them off.
καὶ λάβεν τὴν βακτηρίαν αὐτοῦ ἐν τῇ αὐτοῦ, καὶ ἐξελέξατο ἑαυτῷ .
And David took his staff in his hand, selected five smooth stones from the brook, and put them in the pouch of his shepherd’s bag. And with his sling in hand, he approached the Philistine.
πέντε λίθους τελείους ἐκ τοῦ καὶ ἔθετο αὐτοὺς ἐν τῷ καδίῳ τῷ ποιμενικῷ τῷ ὄντι αὐτῷ καὶ σφενδόνην αὐτοῦ ἐν τῇ χειρὶ αὐτοῦ· καὶ προσῆλθεν πρὸς τὸν ἄνδρα τὸν ἀλλόφυλον.
Now the Philistine came closer and closer to David, with his shield-bearer before him.
καὶ εἶδεν Γολιὰδ τὸν Δαυεὶδ καὶ ἠτίμασεν αὐτόν, ὅτι αὐτὸς ἦν παιδάριον καὶ αὐτὸς πυρράκης μετὰ κάλλους ὀφθαλμῶν.
When the Philistine looked and saw David, he despised him because he was just a boy, ruddy and handsome.
καὶ εἶπεν ὁ ἀλλόφυλος πρὸς Δαυείδ Ὡσεὶ κύων ἐγώ εἰμι, ὅτι σὺ ἔρχῃ ἐπ’ ἐμὲ ἐν ῥάβδῳ καὶ λίθοις; καὶ εἶπεν Δαυείδ οὐχί, ἀλλ’ ἢ χείρω κυνός. καὶ κατηράσατο ὁ ἀλλόφυλος τὸν Δαυεὶδ ἐν τοῖς θεοῖς ἑαυτοῦ.
“Am I a dog,” he said to David, “that you come at me with sticks?” And the Philistine cursed David by his gods.
καὶ εἶπεν ὁ ἀλλόφυλος πρὸς Δαυείδ Δεῦρο πρὸς μὲ καὶ δώσω τὰς σάρκας σου τοῖς πετεινοῖς τοῦ οὐρανοῦ καὶ τοῖς κτήνεσιν τῆς γῆς.
“Come here,” he called to David, “and I will give your flesh to the birds of the air and the beasts of the field!”
καὶ εἶπεν Δαυεὶδ πρὸς τὸν ἀλλόφυλον Σὺ ἔρχῃ πρὸς μὲ ἐν ῥομφαίᾳ καὶ ἐν δόρατι καὶ ἐν ·ἀσπίδι, κἀγὼ πορεύομοι πρὸς σὲ ἐν ὀνόματι κυρίου θεοῦ σαβαὼθ παρατάξεως Ἰσραὴλ ἢν ὠνείδισας σήμερον·
But David said to the Philistine, “You come against me with sword and spear and javelin, but I come against you in the name of the LORD of Hosts, the God of the armies of Israel, whom you have defied.
καὶ ἀποκλείσει σε κύριος σήμερον εἰς τὴν χεῖρά μου, καὶ ἀποκτενῶ σε καὶ ἀφελῶ τὴν κεφαλήν σου ἀπὸ σοῦ, καὶ δώσω τὰ κῶλά σου καὶ τὰ κῶλα παρεμβολῆς ἀλλοφύλων ἐν ταύτῃ τῇ ἡμέρᾳ τοῖς πετεινοῖς τοῦ οὐρανοῦ καὶ τοῖς θηρίοις τῆς γῆς· καὶ γνώσεται αἰ πᾶσα ἡ γῆ ὅτι ἔστιν θεὸς ἐν Ἰσραήλ.
This day the LORD will deliver you into my hand. This day I will strike you down, cut off your head, and give the carcasses of the Philistine army to the birds of the air and the creatures of the earth. Then the whole world will know that there is a God in Israel.
καὶ γνώσεται πᾶσα ἡ ἐκκλησία αὕτη ὅτι οὐκ ἐν ῥομφαίᾳ καὶ δόρατι σώζει Κύριος· ὅτι τοῦ Κυρίου ὁ πόλεμος, καὶ παραδώσει Κύριος ὑμᾶς εἰς χεῖρας ἡμῶν.
And all those assembled here will know that it is not by sword or spear that the LORD saves; for the battle is the LORD’s, and He will give all of you into our hands.”
καὶ ἀνέστη ὁ ἀλλόφυλος καὶ ἐπορεύθη εἰς συνάντησιν Δαυείδ.
As the Philistine started forward to attack him, David ran quickly toward the battle line to meet him.
καὶ ἐξέτεινεν Δαυεὶδ τὴν χεῖρα αὐτοῦ εἰς τὸ κάδιον καὶ ἔλαβεν ἐκεῖθεν λίθον ἕνα, καὶ ἐσφενδόνησεν καὶ ἐπάταξεν τὸν ἀλλόφυλον ἐπὶ τὸ μέ πον αὐτοῦ, καὶ διέδυ ὁ λίθος διὰ τῆς περικεφαλαίας εἰς τὸ αὐτοῦ, καὶ ἔπεσεν ἐπὶ πρόσωπον αὐτοῦ ἐπὶ τὴν γῆν.
Then David reached into his bag, took out a stone, and slung it, striking the Philistine on the forehead. The stone sank into his forehead, and he fell facedown on the ground.
καὶ ἔδραμεν Δαυεὶδ καὶ ἐπέστη ἐπ’ αὐτόν, καὶ ἔλαβεν τὴν ῥομφαίαν αὐτοῦ καὶ ἐθανάτωσεν αὐτὸν καὶ ἀφεῖθεβ τὴν κεφαλὴν αὐτοῦ· καὶ εἶδον οἱ ἀλλόφυλοι ὅτι τέθνηκεν ὁ δυνατὸς αὐτῶν, καὶ ἔφυγον.
David ran and stood over him. He grabbed the Philistine’s sword and pulled it from its sheath and killed him, and he cut off his head with the sword. When the Philistines saw that their hero was dead, they turned and ran.
καὶ ἀνίστανται ἄνδρες Ἰσραὴλ καὶ Ἰούδα καὶ ἠλάλαξαν, καὶ κατεδίωξαν ὀπίσω αὐτῶν ἕως εἰσόδου Γὲθ καὶ ἕως τῆς πύλης Ἀσκάλωνος· καὶ ἔπεσαν τραυματίαι τῶν ἀλλοφύλων ἐν τῆ ὁδῷ τῶν πυλῶν καὶ ἕως Γὲθ καὶ ἕως Ἀκκαρών.
Then the men of Israel and Judah charged forward with a shout and pursued the Philistines to the entrance of Gath (note: LXX; Hebrew of Gai; that is, of the valley) and to the gates of Ekron. And the bodies of the Philistines were strewn along the Shaaraim road to Gath and Ekron.
καὶ ἀνέστρεψαν ἄνδρες Ἰσραὴλ ἐκκλίνοντες ὀπίσω τῶν ὦν ἀλλοφύλων, καὶ κατεπάτουν τὰς παρεμβολὰς αὐτῶν.
When the Israelites returned from their pursuit of the Philistines, they plundered their camps.
καὶ ἔλαβεν Δαυεὶδ τὴν κεφαλὴν τοῦ ἀλλοφύλου καὶ ἤνεγκεν αὐτὴν εἰς Ἰερυσαλήμ, καὶ τὰ σκεύη αὐτοῦ ἔθηκεν ἐν τῷ αὐτοῦ.
David took the head of the Philistine and brought it to Jerusalem, and he put Goliath’s weapons in his own tent.
