Καὶ εἶπεν κύριος πρὸς Σαμουήλ Ἕως πότε σὺ πενθεῖς ἐπὶ Σαούλ, κἀγὼ ἐξουδένωκα αὐτὸν μὴ βασιλεύειν ἐπὶ Ἰσραήλ ; πλῆσον τὸ κέρας σου ἐλαίου, καὶ δεῦρο ἀποστείλω σε πρὸς Ἰεσσαὶ ἕως εἰς , ὅτι ἑόρακα ἐν τοῖς υἱοῖς αὐτοῦ ἐμοὶ βασιλεύειν.
Now the LORD said to Samuel, “How long are you going to mourn for Saul, since I have rejected him as king over Israel? Fill your horn with oil and go. I am sending you to Jesse of Bethlehem, for I have selected from his sons a king for Myself.”
καὶ εἶπεν Ἠὼς πορευθῶ ; καὶ ἀκούσεται Σαοὺλ καὶ ἀποκτενεῖ με. καὶ εἶπεν Κύριος Δάμαλιν βοῶν λάβε ἐν τῇ χειρί σου καὶ ἐρεῖς Θῦσαι ἥκω τῷ κυρίῳ·
“How can I go?” Samuel asked. “Saul will hear of it and kill me!” The LORD answered, “Take a heifer with you and say, ‘I have come to sacrifice to the LORD.’
καὶ καλέσεις τὸν Ἰεσσαὶ εἰς τὴν θυσίαν, καὶ γνωριῶ σοι ἃ ποιήσεις, καὶ χρίσεις ὃν ἐὰν εἴπω πρὸς σέ.
Then invite Jesse to the sacrifice, and I will show you what you are to do. You are to anoint for Me the one I indicate.”
καὶ ἐποίησεν Σαμουὴλ πάντα ἃ ἐλάλησεν αὐτῷ Κύριος, καὶ ἦλθεν εἰς Βηθλέεμ. καὶ ἐξέστησαν οἱ πρεσβύτεροι τῆς πόλεως τῆ ἀπαντήσει αὐτοῦ καὶ εἶπαν Ἢ εἰρήνη ἡ εἴσοδός σου, ὁ βλέπων ;
So Samuel did what the LORD had said and went to Bethlehem. When the elders of the town met him, they trembled and asked, “Do you come in peace?”
καὶ εἶπεν Εἰρήνη· θῦσαι τῷ κυρίῳ ἥκω, ἁγιάσθητε καὶ εὐφράνθητε μετ’ ἐμοῦ σήμερον. καὶ ἡγίασεν τὸν Ἰεσσαὶ καὶ τοὺς υἱοὺς αὐτοῦ, καὶ ἐκάλεσεν αὐτοὺς εἰς τὴν θυσίαν.
“In peace,” he replied. “I have come to sacrifice to the LORD. Consecrate yourselves and come with me to the sacrifice.” Then he consecrated Jesse and his sons and invited them to the sacrifice.
καὶ ἐγενήθη ἐν τῷ αὐτοὺς εἰσιέναι καὶ εἶδεν τὸν Ἐλιάβ, καὶ εἶπεν Ἀλλὰ καὶ ἐνώπιον Κυρίου χριστὸς αὐτοῦ.
When they arrived, Samuel saw Eliab and said, “Surely here before the LORD is His anointed.”
καὶ εἶπεν κύριος πρὸς Σαμουήλ Μὴ ἐπιβλέψῃς ἐπὶ τὴν ὄψιν αὐτοῦ μηδὲ εἰς τὴν ἕξιν μεγέθους αὐτοῦ, ὅτι ἐξουδένωκα αὐτόν· ὅτι οὐχ ὡς ἐμβλέψεται ἄνθρωπος, ὄψεται ὁ θεός· ὅτι ἄνθρωπος ὄψεται εἰς πρόσωπον, ὁ δὲ θεὸς ὄψεται εἰς καρδίαν.
But the LORD said to Samuel, “Do not consider his appearance or height, for I have rejected him; the LORD does not see as man does. For man sees the outward appearance, but the LORD sees the heart.”
καὶ ἐκάλεσεν Ἰεσσαὶ τὸν Ἀμειναδάβ, καὶ παρῆλθεν κατὰ πρόσωπον Σαμουήλ, καὶ εἶπεν Οὐδὲ τοῦτον ἐξελέξατο ὁ θεός.
Then Jesse called Abinadab and presented him to Samuel, who said, “The LORD has not chosen this one either.”
καὶ παρήγαγεν Ἰεσσαὶ τὸν Σαμά· καὶ εἶπεν καὶ ἐν τούτῳ οὐκ ἐξελέξατο κύριος.
Next Jesse presented Shammah (note: Shammah is a variant of Shimeah, Shimea, and Shimei; see 2 Samuel 13:3, 2 Samuel 21:21, and 1 Chronicles 2:13.), but Samuel said, “The LORD has not chosen this one either.”
καὶ παρῆγ’ ἂγ ἐν Ἰεσσαὶ τοὺς ἑπτὰ υἱοὺς αὐτοῦ ἐνώπιον Σαμουήλ· καὶ εἶπεν Σαμουήλ· οὐκ ἐξελέξατο κύριος ἐν τούτοις.
Thus Jesse made seven of his sons pass before Samuel, but Samuel told him, “The LORD has not chosen any of these.”
καὶ εἶπεν Σαμουὴλ πρὸς Ἰεσσαί Ἐκλελοίπασιν τὰ παιδάρια ; καὶ εἶπεν Ἔτι ὁ μικρός· ἰδοὺ ποιμαίνει ἐν τῷ ποιμνίῳ· καὶ εἶπεν Σαμουὴλ πρὸς Ἰεσσαί Ἀπόστειλον καὶ λάβε αὐτόν, ὅτι οὐ μὴ κατακλιθῶμεν ἕως τοῦ ἐλθεῖν αὐτόν
And Samuel asked him, “Are these all the sons you have?” “There is still the youngest,” Jesse replied, “but he is tending the sheep.” “Send for him,” Samuel replied. “For we will not sit down to eat until he arrives.”
καὶ ἀπέστειλεν καὶ είσήγαγεν αὐτόν· καὶ οὗτος πυρράκης μετὰ κάλλους ὀφθαλμῶν, καὶ ἀγαθὸς ὁράσει κυρίῳ· καὶ εἶπεν Κύριος πρὸς Σαμουήλ Ἀνάστα καὶ χρῖσον τὸν Δαυείδ, ὅτι οὗτος ἀγαθός ἐστιν.
So Jesse sent for his youngest son and brought him in. He was ruddy, with beautiful eyes and a handsome appearance. And the LORD said, “Rise and anoint him, for he is the one.”
καὶ ἔλαβεν Σαμουὴλ τὸ κέρας τοῦ ἐλαίου καὶ ἔχριδεν αὐτὸν ἐν μέσῳ τῶν ἀδελφῶν αὐτοῦ· καὶ ἐφήλατο πνεῦμα κυρίου ἐπὶ Δαυεὶδ ἀπὸ τῆς ἡμέρας ἐκείνης καὶ ἐπάνω· καὶ ἀνέστη Σαμουὴλ καὶ ἀπῆλθεν εἰς Ἁρμαθάιμ.
So Samuel took the horn of oil and anointed him in the presence of his brothers, and the Spirit of the LORD rushed upon David from that day forward. Then Samuel set out and went to Ramah.
καὶ πνεῦμα κυρίου ἀπέστη ἀπὸ Σαούλ, καὶ ἔπνιγεν αὐτόν πνεῦμα πονηρὸν παρὰ Τυρίου.
Now the Spirit of the LORD departed from Saul, and a spirit of distress (note: Or a harmful spirit; similarly in verses 15, 16, and 23) from the LORD began to torment him.
καὶ εἶπαν οἱ παῖδες Σαοὺλ πρὸς αὐτόν ἰδοὺ δὴ πνεῦμα Τυρίου πονηρὸν πνίγει σε·
Saul’s servants said to him, “Surely a spirit of distress from God is tormenting you.
εἰπάτωσαν δὴ οἱ δοῦλοί σου ἐνώπιόν σου καὶ ζητησάτωσαν τῷ κυρίῳ ἡμῶν ἄνδρα εἰδότα ψάλλειν ἐν κινύρᾳ· καὶ ἔσται ἐν τῷ εἶναι πνεῦμα πονηρὸν ἐπὶ σοὶ καὶ ψαλεῖ ἐν τῇ κινύρᾳ αὐτοῦ, καὶ ἀγαθόν σοι ἱστᾶι καὶ ἀναπαύσει σε.
Let our lord command your servants here to seek out someone who can skillfully play the harp. Whenever the spirit of distress from God is upon you, he is to play it, and you will be well.”
καὶ εἶπεν Σαοὺλ πρὸς τοὺς παῖδος αὐτοῦ Ἴδετε δή μοι ἄνδρα ὀρθῶς ψάλλοντα, καὶ εἰσαγάγετε αὐτὸν πρὸς ἐμέ.
And Saul commanded his servants, “Find me someone who plays well, and bring him to me.”
καὶ ἀπεκρίθη εἷς τῶν παιδαρίων αὐτοῦ καὶ εἶπεν ἰδοὺ ἑόρακα υἱὸν τῷ Ἰεσσαὶ Βηθλεεμείτην καὶ αὐτὸν εἰδότα ψαλμόν, καὶ ὁ ἀνὴρ συνετὸς καὶ ὁ ἀνὴρ πολεμιστὴς καὶ σοφὸς λόγῳ, καὶ ἀνὴρ ἀγαθὸς τῷ εἴδει, καὶ κύριος μετ’ αὐτοῦ.
One of the servants answered, “I have seen a son of Jesse of Bethlehem who knows how to play the harp. He is a mighty man of valor, a warrior, eloquent and handsome, and the LORD is with him.”
καὶ ἀπέστειλεν Σαοὺλ ἀγγέλους πρὸς Ἰεσσαὶ λέγων Ἀπόστειλον πρὸς μὲ τὸν υἱόν σου Δαυεὶδ τὸν ἐν τῷ ποι σου.
So Saul sent messengers to Jesse and said, “Send me your son David, who is with the sheep.”
καὶ ἔλαβεν Ἰεσσαὶ γόμορ ἄρτων καὶ ἀσκὸν οἴνου κα ἔριφον αἰγῶν ἕνα, καὶ ἐξαπέστειλεν ἐν χειρὶ Δαυεὶδ τοῦ υἱοῦ αὐτοῦ πρὸς Σαούλ.
And Jesse took a donkey loaded with bread, a skin of wine, and one young goat and sent them to Saul with his son David.
καὶ εἰσῆλθεν Δαυεὶδ πρὸς Σαούλ, καὶ παριστήκει ἐνώπιον αὐτοῦ. καὶ ἠγάπησεν αὐτὸν σφόδρα, καὶ ἐγενήθη αὐτῷ αἴρων τὰ αὐτοῦ.
When David came to Saul and entered his service, Saul loved him very much, and David became his armor-bearer.
καὶ ἀπέστειλεν Σαοὺλ πρὸς Ἰεσσαὶ λέγων Ηαριστόσθω Δαυεὶδ ἐνώπιον ἐμοῦ, ὅτι εὗρεν χάριν ἐν ὀφθαλμοῖς μου.
Then Saul sent word to Jesse, saying, “Let David remain in my service, for I am pleased with him.”
καὶ ἐν τῶ εἶναι πνεῦμα πονηρὸν ἐπὶ Σαοὺλ καὶ ἐλάμβανεν Δαυεὶδ κινύραν καὶ ἔψαλλεν ἐν τῇ χειρὶ αὐτοῦ, καὶ ἀνέψυχεν Σαοὺλ καὶ ἀγαθὸν αὐτῷ, καὶ ἀφίστατο ἀπ’ αὐτοῦ τὸ πνεῦμα τὸ πονηρόν·
And whenever the spirit from God came upon Saul, David would pick up his harp and play. Then Saul would find relief and feel better, and the spirit of distress would depart from him.
