5:1

Wer da glaubt, dass Jesus sei der Christus, der ist von Gott geboren; und wer da liebt den, der ihn geboren hat, der liebt auch den, der von ihm geboren ist.

Everyone who believes that Jesus is the Christ has been born of God, and everyone who loves the Father also loves those born of .

5:2

Daran erkennen wir, dass wir Gottes Kinder lieben, wenn wir Gott lieben und seine Gebote halten.

By this we know that we love the children of God: when we love God and keep His commandments.

5:3

Denn das ist die Liebe zu Gott, dass wir seine Gebote halten; und seine Gebote sind nicht schwer.

For this is the love of God, that we keep His commandments. And His commandments are not burdensome,

5:4

Denn alles, was von Gott geboren ist, überwindet die Welt; und unser Glaube ist der Sieg, der die Welt überwunden hat.

because everyone born of God overcomes the world. And this is the victory that has overcome the world: our faith.

5:5

Wer ist aber, der die Welt überwindet, wenn nicht, der da glaubt, dass Jesus Gottes Sohn ist?

Who then overcomes the world? Only he who believes that Jesus is the Son of God.

5:6

Dieser ist's, der da kommt mit Wasser und Blut, Jesus Christus; nicht mit Wasser allein, sondern mit Wasser und Blut. Und der Geist ist's, der da zeugt; denn der Geist ist die Wahrheit.

This is the One who came by water and blood, Jesus Christ—not by water alone, but by water and blood. And it is the Spirit who testifies to this, because the Spirit is the truth.

5:7

Denn drei sind, die da zeugen: der Geist und das Wasser und das Blut;

For there are three :

und die drei sind beisammen.

the Spirit, the water, and the blood—and these three are in agreement.

5:9

So wir der Menschen Zeugnis annehmen, so ist Gottes Zeugnis größer; denn Gottes Zeugnis ist das, das er gezeugt hat von seinem Sohn.

Even if we accept human testimony, the testimony of God is greater. For this is the testimony that God has given about His Son.

5:10

Wer da glaubt an den Sohn Gottes, der hat solches Zeugnis bei sich. Wer Gott nicht glaubt, der macht ihn zum Lügner; denn er glaubt nicht dem Zeugnis, das Gott zeugt von seinem Sohn.

Whoever believes in the Son of God has this testimony within him; whoever does not believe God has made Him out to be a liar, because he has not believed in the testimony that God has given about His Son.

5:11

Und das ist das Zeugnis, dass uns Gott das ewige Leben hat gegeben; und solches Leben ist in seinem Sohn.

And this is that testimony: God has given us eternal life, and this life is in His Son.

5:12

Wer den Sohn Gottes hat, der hat das Leben; wer den Sohn Gottes nicht hat, der hat das Leben nicht.

Whoever has the Son has life; whoever does not have the Son of God does not have life.

5:13

Solches habe ich euch geschrieben, die ihr glaubet an den Namen des Sohnes Gottes, auf dass ihr wisset, dass ihr das ewige Leben habt, und dass ihr glaubet an den Namen des Sohnes Gottes.

I have written these things to you who believe in the name of the Son of God, so that you may know that you have eternal .

5:14

Und das ist die Freudigkeit, die wir haben zu ihm, dass, so wir etwas bitten nach seinem Willen, so hört er uns.

And this is the confidence that we have before Him: If we ask anything according to His will, He hears us.

5:15

Und so wir wissen, dass er uns hört, was wir bitten, so wissen wir, dass wir die Bitten haben, die wir von ihm gebeten haben.

And if we know that He hears us in whatever we ask, we know that we already possess what we have asked of Him.

5:16

So jemand sieht seinen Bruder sündigen eine Sünde nicht zum Tode, der mag bitten; so wird er geben das Leben denen, die da sündigen nicht zum Tode. Es gibt eine Sünde zum Tode; für die sage ich nicht, dass jemand bitte.

If anyone sees his brother committing a sin not leading to death, he should ask God, who will give life to those who commit this kind of sin. There is a sin that leads to death; I am not saying he should ask regarding that sin.

5:17

Alle Untugend ist Sünde; und es ist etliche Sünde nicht zum Tode.

All unrighteousness is sin, yet there is sin that does not lead to death.

5:18

Wir wissen, dass, wer von Gott geboren ist, der sündigt nicht; sondern wer von Gott geboren ist, der bewahrt sich, und der Arge wird ihn nicht antasten.

We know that anyone born of God does not keep on sinning; the One who was born of God protects , and the evil one cannot touch him.

5:19

Wir wissen, dass wir von Gott sind und die ganze Welt im Argen liegt.

We know that we are of God, and that the whole world is under the power of the evil one.

5:20

Wir wissen aber, dass der Sohn Gottes gekommen ist und hat uns einen Sinn gegeben, dass wir erkennen den Wahrhaftigen; und wir sind in dem Wahrhaftigen, in seinem Sohn Jesus Christus. Dieser ist der wahrhaftige Gott und das ewige Leben.

And we know that the Son of God has come and has given us understanding, so that we may know Him who is true; and we are in Him who is true—in His Son Jesus Christ. He is the true God and eternal life.

5:21

Kindlein, hütet euch vor den Abgöttern! Amen.
