4:1
And the sons of Juda; Phares, Esrom, and Charmi, and Or, Subal,
The descendants of Judah: Perez, Hezron, Carmi, Hur, and Shobal.
4:2
and Rada his son; and Subal begot Jeth; and Jeth begot Achimai, and Laad: these [are] the generations of the Arathites.
Reaiah son of Shobal was the father of Jahath, and Jahath was the father of Ahumai and Lahad. These were the clans of the Zorathites.
4:3
And these [are] the sons of Ætam; Jezrael and Jesman, and Jebdas: and their sister's name [was] Eselebbon.
These were the sons of Etam: Jezreel, Ishma, and Idbash. And their sister was named Hazzelelponi.
4:4
And Phanuel the father of Gedor, and Jazer the father of Osan: these [are] the sons of Or, the first-born of Ephratha, the father of Bæthalaen.
Penuel was the father (note: Or the founder; also in verses 5, 12, 14, 17, 18, and possibly elsewhere) of Gedor, and Ezer was the father of Hushah. These were the descendants of Hur, the firstborn of Ephrathah and the father of Bethlehem.
4:5
And Asur the father of Thecoe had two wives, Aoda and Thoada.
Ashhur the father of Tekoa had two wives, Helah and Naarah.
4:6
And Aoda bore to him Ochaia, and Ephal, and Thæman, and Aasther: all these [were] the sons of Aoda.
Naarah bore to him Ahuzzam, Hepher, Temeni, and Haahashtari. These were the descendants of Naarah.
4:7
And the sons of Thoada; Sereth, and Saar, and Esthanam.
The sons of Helah were Zereth, Zohar (note: Alternate MT reading; the other alternate (see also Vulgate) reads Izhar.), Ethnan,
4:8
And Coe begot Enob, and Sabatha, and the progeny of the brother of Rechab, the son of Jarin.
and Koz, who was the father of Anub and Zobebah and of the clans of Aharhel son of Harum.
4:9
And Igabes was more famous than his brethren; and his mother called his name Igabes, saying, I have born as a sorrowful one.
Now Jabez (note: Jabez sounds like the Hebrew for pain or distress.) was more honorable than his brothers. His mother had named him Jabez, saying, “Because I bore him in pain.”
And Igabes called on the God of Israel, saying, O that thou wouldest indeed bless me, and enlarge my coasts, and that thy hand might be with me, and that thou wouldest make me know that thou wilt not grieve me! And God granted him all that he asked.
And Jabez called out to the God of Israel, “If only You would bless me and enlarge my territory! May Your hand be with me and keep me from harm, so that I will be free from pain.” And God granted the request of Jabez.
And Chaleb the father of Ascha begot Machir; he [was] the father of Assathon.
Chelub the brother of Shuhah was the father of Mehir, who was the father of Eshton.
He begot Bathraias, and Besseë, and Thæman the founder of the city of Naas the brother of Eselom the Kenezite: these [were] the men of Rechab.
Eshton was the father of Beth-rapha, of Paseah, and of Tehinnah the father of Ir-nahash. These were the men of Recah.
And the sons of Kenez; Gothoniel, and Saraia: and the sons of Gothoniel; Athath.
The sons of Kenaz: Othniel and Seraiah. The sons of Othniel: Hathath and Meonothai (note: Vulgate and some LXX; Hebrew does not include and Meonothai.).
And Manathi begot Gophera: and Saraia begot Jobab, the father of Ageaddair, for they were artificers.
Meonothai was the father of Ophrah, and Seraiah was the father of Joab, the father of those living in Ge-harashim, which was given this name because its people were craftsmen (note: Literally Ge-harashim, for they were craftsmen. The Hebrew Ge-harashim means valley of craftsmen.).
And the sons of Chaleb the son of Jephonne; Er, Ada, and Noom: and the sons of Ada, Kenez.
The son (note: Hebrew sons)s of Caleb son of Jephunneh: Iru, Elah, and Naam. The son of Elah: Kenaz.
And the sons of Aleel, Zib, and Zepha, and Thiria, and Eserel.
The sons of Jehallelel: Ziph, Ziphah, Tiria, and Asarel.
And the sons of Esri; Jether, Morad, and Apher, and Jamon: and Jether begot Maron, and Semei, and Jesba the father of Esthæmon.
The sons of Ezrah: Jether, Mered, Epher, and Jalon. And Mered’s wife Bithiah gave birth to Miriam, Shammai, and Ishbah the father of Eshtemoa.
And his wife, that [is] Adia, bore Jared the father of Gedor, and Aber the father of Sochon, and Chetiel the father of Zamon: and these [are] the sons of Betthia the daughter of Pharao, whom Mored took.
These were the children of Pharaoh’s daughter Bithiah (note: This statement is at the end of verse 18 in the Hebrew.). Mered also took a Judean (note: Or Judahite) wife, who gave birth to Jered the father of Gedor, Heber the father of Soco, and Jekuthiel the father of Zanoah.
And the sons of the wife of Iduia the sister of Nachaim the father of Keila; Garmi, and Esthæmon the Nochathite.
The sons of Hodiah’s wife, the sister of Naham, were the fathers of Keilah the Garmite and of Eshtemoa the Maacathite (note: Or were the father of Keilah the Garmite, and Eshtemoa the Maacathite).
And the sons of Semon; Amnon, and Ana the son of Phana, and Inon: and the sons of Sei, Zoan, and the sons of Zoab.
The sons of Shimon: Amnon, Rinnah, Ben-hanan, and Tilon. The descendants of Ishi: Zoheth and Ben-zoheth.
The sons of Selom the son of Juda; Er the father of Lechab, and Laada the father of Marisa, and the offspring of the family of Ephrathabac [belonging to] the house of Esoba.
The sons of Shelah son of Judah: Er the father of Lecah, Laadah the father of Mareshah and the clans of the linen workers at Beth-ashbea,
And Joakim, and the men of Chozeba, and Joas, and Saraph, who dwelt in Moab, and he changed their names to Abederin and Athukiim.
Jokim, the men of Cozeba, and Joash and Saraph, who ruled in Moab and Jashubi-lehem. (These names are from ancient records.)
These [are] the potters who dwelt in Ataim and Gadira with the king: they grew strong in his kingdom, and dwelt there.
These were the potters who lived at Netaim and Gederah. They lived there in the service of the king.
The sons of Semeon; Namuel, and Jamin, Jarib, Zares, Saul:
The descendants of Simeon: Nemuel, Jamin, Jarib, Zerah (note: Zerah is a variant of Zohar; see Genesis 46:10 and Exodus 6:15.), and Shaul.
Salem his son, Mabasam his son, Masma his son:
The sons of Shaul: Shallum, Mibsam, and Mishma.
Amuel his son, Sabud his son, Zacchur his son, Semei his son.
The sons of Mishma: Hammuel, Zaccur, and Shimei.
Semei [had] sixteen sons, and six daughters; and his brethren had not many sons, neither did all their families multiply as the sons of Juda.
Shimei had sixteen sons and six daughters, but his brothers did not have many children, so their whole clan did not become as numerous as the sons of Judah.
And they dwelt in Bersabee, and Molada, and in Esersual,
They lived in Beersheba, Moladah, Hazar-shual,
and in Balaa, and in Æsem, and in Tholad,
Bilhah, Ezem, Tolad,
and in Bathuel, and in Herma, and in Sikelag,
Bethuel, Hormah, Ziklag,
and in Bæthmarimoth, and Hemisuseosin, and the house of Baruseorim: these [were] their cities until [the time of] king David.
Beth-marcaboth, Hazar-susim, Beth-biri, and Shaaraim. These were their cities until the reign of David.
And their villages [were] Ætan, and En, Remnon, and Thocca, and Æsar, five cities.
And their villages were Etam, Ain, Rimmon, Tochen, and Ashan—five towns—
And all their villages [were] round about these cities, as far as Baal: this [was] their possession, and their distribution.
and all their surrounding villages as far as Baal (note: Hebrew; some LXX manuscripts (see also Joshua 19:8) Baalath). These were their settlements, and they kept a genealogical record:
And Mosobab, and Jemoloch, and Josia the son of Amasia;
Meshobab, Jamlech, Joshah son of Amaziah,
and Joel, and Jeu the son of Asabia, the son of Sarau, the son of Asiel;
Joel, Jehu son of Joshibiah (son of Seraiah, son of Asiel),
and Elionai, and Jocaba, and Jasuia, and Asaia, and Jediel, and Ismael, and Banaias;
Elioenai, Jaakobah, Jeshohaiah, Asaiah, Adiel, Jesimiel, Benaiah,
and Zuza the son of Saphai, the son of Alon, the son of Jedia, the son of Semri, the son of Samaias.
and Ziza son of Shiphi (son of Allon, son of Jedaiah, son of Shimri, son of Shemaiah).
These went by the names of princes in their families, and they increased abundantly in their fathers' households.
These men listed by name were the leaders of their clans. Their families increased greatly,
And they went till they came to Gerara, to the east of Gai, to seek pasture for their cattle.
and they journeyed to the entrance of Gedor, to the east side of the valley, in search of pasture for their flocks.
And they found abundant and good pastures, and the land before them [was] wide, and [there was] peace and quietness; for [there were] some of the children of Cham who dwelt there before.
There they found rich, good pasture, and the land was spacious, peaceful, and quiet; for some Hamites had lived there formerly.
And these who are written by name came in the days of Ezekias king of Juda, and they smote the people's houses, and the Minæans whom they found there, and utterly destroyed them until this day: and they dwelt in their place, because [there was] pasture there for their cattle.
These who were noted by name came in the days of Hezekiah king of Judah. They attacked the Hamites in their dwellings as well as the Meunites who were there, devoting them to destruction (note: Forms of the Hebrew cherem refer to the giving over of things or persons to the LORD, either by destroying them or by giving them as an offering.) even to this day. Then they settled in their place, because there was pasture for their flocks.
And some of them, [even] of the sons of Symeon, went to mount Seir, [even] five hundred men; and Phalaettia, and Noadia, and Raphaia, and Oziel, sons of Jesi, [were] their rulers.
And five hundred of these Simeonites led by Pelatiah, Neariah, Rephaiah, and Uzziel, the sons of Ishi, went to Mount Seir
And they smote the remnant that were left of Amalec, until this day.
and struck down the remnant of the Amalekites who had escaped. And they have lived there to this day.
