Psalms 53

For the Leader; upon Mahalath. Maschil of David.
For the choirmaster. According to Mahalath (note: Mahalath is probably a musical or liturgical term; see also Psalm 88:1.). A Maskil (note: Maskil is probably a musical or liturgical term; used for Psalms 32, 42, 44–45, 52–55, 74, 78, 88–89, and 142.) of David. The fool says in his heart, “There is no God.” They are corrupt; their ways are vile. There is no one who does good.
The fool hath said in his heart: 'There is no God'; They have dealt corruptly, and have done abominable iniquity; There is none that doeth good.

God looked forth from heaven upon the children of men, To see if there were any man of understanding, that did seek after God.
53:2 God looks down from heaven upon the sons of men to see if any understand, if any seek God.
Every one of them is unclean, they are together become impure; There is none that doeth good, no, not one.
53:3 All have turned away, they have together become corrupt (note: LXX worthless); there is no one (note: Cited in Romans 3:10–12) who does good, not even one.
’Shall not the workers of iniquity know it, Who eat up My people as they eat bread, And call not upon God?'
53:4 Will the workers of iniquity never learn? They devour my people like bread; they refuse to call upon God.
There are they in great fear, where no fear was; For God hath scattered the bones of him that encampeth against thee; Thou hast put them to shame, because God hath rejected them.
53:5 There they are, overwhelmed with dread, where there was nothing to fear. For God has scattered the bones of those who besieged you. You put them to shame, for God has despised them.
Oh that the salvation of Israel were come out of Zion! When God turneth the captivity of His people, Let Jacob rejoice, let Israel be glad.
53:6 Oh, that the salvation of Israel would come from Zion! When God restores His captive people (note: Or the fortunes of His people), let Jacob rejoice, let Israel be glad!
