For the end, among the Hymns of instruction by David,
For the choirmaster. According to Mahalath (note: Mahalath is probably a musical or liturgical term; see also Psalm 88:1.). A Maskil (note: Maskil is probably a musical or liturgical term; used for Psalms 32, 42, 44–45, 52–55, 74, 78, 88–89, and 142.) of David. The fool says in his heart, “There is no God.” They are corrupt; their ways are vile. There is no one who does good.
when the Ziphites came and said to Saul, Lo, is not David hid with us?
God looks down from heaven upon the sons of men to see if any understand, if any seek God.
Save me, O God, by thy name, and judge me by thy might.
54:1

When the Ziphites went to Saul and said, “Is David not hiding among us?” Save me, O God, by Your name, and vindicate me by Your might!
O God, hear my prayer; hearken to the words of my mouth.
54:2
Hear my prayer, O God; listen to the words of my mouth.
For strangers have risen up against me, and mighty men have sought my life: they have not set God before them. Pause.
54:3
For strangers rise up against me, and ruthless men seek my life—men with no regard for God. Selah
For lo! God assists me; and the Lord is the helper of my soul.
54:4
Surely God is my helper; the Lord is the sustainer of my soul.
He shall return evil to mine enemies; utterly destroy them in thy truth.
54:5
He will reward my enemies with evil. In Your faithfulness, destroy them.
I will willingly sacrifice to thee: I will give thanks to thy name, O Lord; for [it is] good.
54:6
Freely I will sacrifice to You; I will praise Your name, O LORD, for it is good.
For thou hast delivered me out of all affliction, and mine eye has seen [my desire] upon mine enemies.
54:7
For He has delivered me from every trouble, and my eyes have looked in triumph on my foes.
