For the Leader; [a Psalm] of the sons of Korah. Maschil.
For the choirmaster. A Maskil (note: Maskil is probably a musical or liturgical term; used for Psalms 32, 42, 44–45, 52–55, 74, 78, 88–89, and 142.) of the sons of Korah. We have heard with our ears, O God; our fathers have told us the work You did in their days, in the days of old.
O God, we have heard with our ears, our fathers have told us; a work Thou didst in their days, in the days of old.

Thou with Thy hand didst drive out the nations, and didst plant them in; Thou didst break the peoples, and didst spread them abroad.
44:2
With Your hand You drove out the nations and planted our fathers there; You crushed the peoples and cast them out.
For not by their own sword did they get the land in possession, Neither did their own arm save them; but Thy right hand, and Thine arm, and the light of Thy countenance, because Thou wast favourable unto them.
44:3
For it was not by their sword that they took the land; their arm did not bring them victory. It was by Your right hand, Your arm, and the light of Your face, because You favored them.
Thou art my King, O God; command the salvation of Jacob.
44:4
You are my King, O God, who ordains victories for Jacob.
Through Thee do we push down our adversaries; through Thy name do we tread them under that rise up against us.
44:5
Through You we repel our foes; through Your name we trample our enemies.
For I trust not in my bow, neither can my sword save me.
44:6
For I do not trust in my bow, nor does my sword save me (note: Or give me victory; similarly in verse 7).
But Thou hast saved us from our adversaries, and hast put them to shame that hate us.
44:7
For You save us from our enemies; You put those who hate us to shame.
In God have we gloried all the day, and we will give thanks unto Thy name for ever. Selah
44:8
In God we have boasted all day long, and Your name we will praise forever. Selah
Yet Thou hast cast off, and brought us to confusion; and goest not forth with our hosts.
44:9
But You have rejected and humbled us; You no longer go forth with our armies.
Thou makest us to turn back from the adversary; and they that hate us spoil at their will.
44:10
You have made us retreat from the foe, and those who hate us have plundered us.
Thou hast given us like sheep to be eaten; and hast scattered us among the nations.
44:11
You have given us up as sheep to be devoured; You have scattered us among the nations.
Thou sellest Thy people for small gain, and hast not set their prices high.
44:12
You sell Your people for nothing; no profit do You gain from their sale.
Thou makest us a taunt to our neighbours, a scorn and a derision to them that are round about us.
44:13
You have made us a reproach to our neighbors, a mockery and derision to those around us.
Thou makest us a byword among the nations, a shaking of the head among the peoples.
44:14
You have made us a byword among the nations, a laughingstock among the peoples.
All the day is my confusion before me, and the shame of my face hath covered me,
44:15
All day long my disgrace is before me, and shame has covered my face,
For the voice of him that taunteth and blasphemeth; by reason of the enemy and the revengeful.
44:16
at the voice of the scorner and reviler, because of the enemy, bent on revenge.
All this is come upon us; yet have we not forgotten Thee, neither have we been false to Thy covenant.
44:17
All this has come upon us, though we have not forgotten You or betrayed Your covenant.
Our heart is not turned back, neither have our steps declined from Thy path;
44:18
Our hearts have not turned back; our steps have not strayed from Your path.
Though Thou hast crushed us into a place of jackals, and covered us with the shadow of death.
44:19
But You have crushed us in the lair of jackals (note: Or serpents or dragons); You have covered us with deepest darkness.
If we had forgotten the name of our God, or spread forth our hands to a strange god; .
44:20
If we had forgotten the name of our God or spread out our hands to a foreign god,
Would not God search this out? For He knoweth the secrets of the heart.
44:21
would not God have discovered, since He knows the secrets of the heart?
Nay, but for Thy sake are we killed all the day; we are accounted as sheep for the slaughter.
44:22
Yet for Your sake we face death all day long; we are considered as sheep to be slaughtered (note: Cited in Romans 8:36).
Awake, why sleepest Thou, O Lord? Arouse Thyself, cast not off for ever.
44:23
Wake up, O Lord! Why are You sleeping? Arise! Do not reject us forever.
Wherefore hidest Thou Thy face, and forgettest our affliction and our oppression?
44:24
Why do You hide Your face and forget our affliction and oppression?
For our soul is bowed down to the dust; our belly cleaveth unto the earth.
44:25
For our soul has sunk to the dust; our bodies cling to the earth.
Arise for our help, and redeem us for Thy mercy's sake.
44:26
Rise up; be our help! Redeem us on account of Your loving devotion.
