Psalms 38

Jewish Publication Society 1917 · Berean Standard Bible

A Psalm of David, to make memorial.
A Psalm of David, for remembrance. O LORD, do not rebuke me in Your anger or discipline me in Your wrath.
O LORD, rebuke me not in Thine anger; neither chasten me in Thy wrath.

For Thine arrows are gone deep into me, and Thy hand is come down upon me.
38:2 For Your arrows have pierced me deeply, and Your hand has pressed down on me.
There is no soundness in my flesh because of Thine indignation; neither is there any health in my bones because of my sin.
38:3 There is no soundness in my body because of Your anger; there is no rest in my bones because of my sin.
For mine iniquities are gone over my head; as a heavy burden they are too heavy for me.
38:4 For my iniquities have overwhelmed me; they are a burden too heavy to bear.
My wounds are noisome, they fester, because of my foolishness.
38:5 My wounds are foul and festering because of my sinful folly.
I am bent and bowed down greatly; I go mourning all the day.
38:6 I am bent and brought low; all day long I go about mourning.
For my loins are filled with burning; and there is no soundness in my flesh.
38:7 For my loins are full of burning pain, and no soundness remains in my body.
I am benumbed and sore crushed; I groan by reason of the moaning of my heart.
38:8 I am numb and badly crushed; I groan in anguish of heart.
Lord, all my desire is before Thee; and my sighing is not hid from Thee.
38:9 O Lord, my every desire is before You; my groaning is not hidden from You.
My heart fluttereth, my strength faileth me; as for the light of mine eyes, it also is gone from me.
38:10 My heart pounds, my strength fails, and even the light of my eyes has faded.
My friends and my companions stand aloof from my plague; and my kinsmen stand afar off.
38:11 My beloved and friends shun my disease, and my kinsmen stand at a distance.
They also that seek after my life lay snares for me; and they that seek my hurt speak crafty devices, and utter deceits all the day.
38:12 Those who seek my life lay snares; those who wish me harm speak destruction, plotting deceit all day long.
But I am as a deaf man, I hear not; and I am as a dumb man that openeth not his mouth.
38:13 But like a deaf man, I do not hear; and like a mute man, I do not open my mouth.
Yea, I am become as a man that heareth not, and in whose mouth are no arguments.
38:14 I am like a man who cannot hear, whose mouth offers no reply.
For in Thee, O LORD, do I hope; Thou wilt answer, O Lord my God.
38:15 I wait for You, O LORD; You will answer, O Lord my God.
For I said: 'Lest they rejoice over me; when my foot slippeth, they magnify themselves against me.'
38:16 For I said, “Let them not gloat over me—those who taunt me when my foot slips.”
For I am ready to halt, and my pain is continually before me.
38:17 For I am ready to fall, and my pain is ever with me.
For I do declare mine iniquity; I am full of care because of my sin.
38:18 Yes, I confess my iniquity; I am troubled by my sin.
But mine enemies are strong in health; and they that hate me wrongfully are multiplied.
38:19 Many are my enemies without cause, and many hate me without reason (note: See John 15:25).
They also that repay evil for good are adversaries unto me, because I follow the thing that is good.
38:20 Those who repay my good with evil attack me for pursuing the good.
Forsake me not, O LORD; O my God, be not far from me.
38:21 Do not forsake me, O LORD; be not far from me, O my God.
Make haste to help me, O Lord, my salvation.
38:22 Come quickly to help me, O Lord my Savior.
