Proverbs 25

Αὗται αἱ παιδεῖαι Σαλωμῶντος αἱ ἀδιάκριτοι, ἃς ἐξεγράψαντο οἱ φίλοι Ἑζεκίου τοῦ βασιλέως τῆς Ἰουδαίας.
These are additional proverbs of Solomon, which were copied by the men of Hezekiah king of Judah:
Δόξα θεοῦ κρύπτει λόγον, δόξα δὲ βασιλέως τιμᾷ πράγματα.
It is the glory of God to conceal a matter and the glory of kings to search it out.
οὐρανὸς ὑψηλός, γῆ δὲ βαθεῖα, καρδία δὲ βασιλέως ἀνεξέλεγκτος.
As the heavens are high and the earth is deep, so the hearts of kings cannot be searched.
τύπτε ἀδόκιμον ἀργύριον, καὶ καθαρισθήσεται καθαρὸν ἅπαν·
Remove the dross from the silver, and a vessel for a silversmith will come forth.
κτεῖνε ἀσεβεῖς ἐκ προσώπου βασιλέως, καὶ κατορθώσει ἐν δικαιοσύνῃ ὁ θρόνος αὐτοῦ.
Remove the wicked from the king’s presence, and his throne will be established in righteousness.
μὴ ἀλαζονεύου ἐνώπιον βασιλέως, μηδὲ ἐν τόποις δυναστῶν ὑφίστασο·
Do not exalt yourself in the presence of the king, and do not stand in the place of great men;
κρεῖσσον γάρ σοι τὸ ῥηθῆναι Ἀνάβαινε πρὸς μέ, ἢ ταπεινῶσαί σε ἐν προσώπῳ δυνάστου. ἃ εἶδον οἱ ὀφθαλμοί σου λέγε.
for it is better to be told, “Come up here!” than to be demoted in the presence of the prince. Even what (note: Or Even the one) you have seen with your own eyes,
μὴ πρόσπιπτε εἰς μάχην ταχέως, ἵνα μὴ μεταμεληθῇς ἐπʼ ἐσχάτῳ, ἡνίκα ἄν σε ὀνειδίσῃ ὁ σὸς φίλος.
do not bring hastily to court. Otherwise, what will you do in the end when your neighbor puts you to shame?
ἀναχώρει εἰς τὰ ὀπίσω, μὴ καταφρόνει,
Argue your case with your neighbor without betraying another’s confidence,
μή σε ὀνειδίσῃ μὲν ὁ φίλος· ἡ δὲ μάχη σου καὶ ἡ ἔχθρα οὐκ ἀπέσται, ἀλλ᾿ ἔσται σοι ἴση θανάτῳ.
lest he who hears you bring shame upon you, and your infamy never go away.
μῆλον χρυσοῦν ἐν ὁρμίσκῳ σαρδίου, οὕτως εἰπεῖν λόγον.
A word fitly spoken is like apples of gold in settings of silver.
εἰς ἐνώτιον χρυσοῦν καὶ σάρδιον πολυτελὲς δέδεται, λόγος σοφὸς εἰς εὐήκοον οὖς.
Like an earring of gold or an ornament of fine gold is a wise man’s rebuke to a listening ear.
ὥσπερ ἔξοδος ἐν ἀμήτῳ κατὰ καῦμα ὠφελεῖ, οὕτως ἄγγελος πιστὸς τοὺς ἀποστείλαντας αὐτόν· ψυχὰς γὰρ τῶν αὐτῷ χρωμένων ὠφελεῖ.
Like the cold of snow in the time of harvest is a trustworthy messenger to those who send him; he refreshes the soul of his masters.
ὥσπερ ἄνεμοι καὶ νέφη καὶ ὑετοὶ ἐπιφανέστατα, οὕτως ὁ καυχώμενος ἐπὶ δόσει ψευδεῖ
Like clouds and wind without rain is the man who boasts of gifts never given.
ἐν μακροθυμίᾳ εὐοδία βασιλεῦσιν, γλῶσσα δὲ μαλακὴ συντρίβει ὀστᾶ.
Through patience a ruler can be persuaded, and a gentle tongue can break a bone.
μέλι εὑρὼν φάγε τὸ ἱκανόν, μή ποτε πλησθεὶς ἐξεμέσῃς.
If you find honey, eat just what you need, lest you have too much and vomit it up.
σπάνιον εἴσαγε σὸν πόδα πρὸς σεαυτοῦ φίλον, μή ποτε πλησθείς σου μισήσῃ σε.
Seldom set foot in your neighbor’s house, lest he grow weary and hate you.
ῥόπαλον καὶ μάχαιρα καὶ τόξευμα ἀκιδωτόν, οὕτως καὶ ἀνὴρ ὁ καταμαρτυρῶν τοῦ φίλου αὐτοῦ μαρτυρίαν ψευδῆ.
Like a club or sword or sharp arrow is a man who bears false witness against his neighbor.
ὁδὸς κακοῦ καὶ ποὺς παρανόμου ὀλεῖται ἐν ἡμέρᾳ κακῇ.
Like a broken tooth or a foot out of joint is confidence in a faithless man in time of trouble.
ὥσπερ ὄξος ἕλκει ἀσύμφορον, οὕτως προσπεσὸν πάθος ἐν σώματι καρδίαν λυπεῖ.
Like one who removes a garment on a cold day or vinegar poured on a wound (note: Or on soda) is one who sings songs to a heavy heart.
ἐὰν πεινᾷ ὁ ἐχθρός σου, ψώμιζε αὐτόν, ἐὰν διψᾷ, πότιζε αὐτόν·
If your enemy is hungry, give him food to eat, and if he is thirsty, give him water to drink.
τοῦτο γὰρ ποιῶν ἄνθρακας πυρὸς σωρεύσεις ἐπὶ τὴν κεφαλὴν αὐτοῦ, ὁ δὲ Κύριος ἀνταποδώσει σοι ἀγαθά.
For in so doing, you will heap burning coals on his head (note: LXX; Hebrew For you will heap burning coals on his head; cited in Romans 12:20), and the LORD will reward you.
ἄνεμος βορέας ἐξεγείρει νέφη, πρόσωπον δὲ ἀναιδὲς γλῶσσαν ἐρεθίζει.
As the north wind brings forth rain, so a backbiting tongue brings angry looks.
κρεῖττον οἰκεῖν ἐπὶ γωνίας δώματος ἢ μετὰ γυναικὸς λοιδόρου ἐν οἰκίᾳ κοινῇ.
Better to live on a corner of the roof than to share a house with a quarrelsome wife.
ὥσπερ ὕδωρ ψυχρὸν ψυχῇ διψώσῃ προσηνές. οὕτως ἀγγελία ἀγαθὴ ἐκ γῆς μακρόθεν.
Like cold water to a weary soul is good news from a distant land.
ὥσπερ εἴ τις πηγὴν φράσσοι καὶ ὕδατος ἔξοδον λυμαίνοιτο, οὕτως ἄκοσμον δίκαιον πεπτωκέναι ἐνώπιον ἀσεβοῦς.
Like a muddied spring or a polluted well is a righteous man who gives way to the wicked.
ἐσθίειν μέλι πολὺ οὐ καλόν, τιμᾷν δὲ χρὴ λόγους ἐνδόξους.
It is not good to eat too much honey or to search out one’s own glory.
ὥσπερ πόλις τὰ τείχη καταβεβλημένη καὶ ἀτείχιστος, οὕτως ἀνὴρ ὃς οὐ μετὰ βουλῆς τι πράσσει.
Like a city whose walls are broken down is a man who does not control his temper.
