καὶ ἐγένετο μετὰ τὴν πληγὴν καὶ ἐλάλησεν κύριος πρὸς Μωυσῆν καὶ πρὸς Ελεαζαρ τὸν ἱερέα λέγων
After the plague had ended, the LORD said to Moses and Eleazar son of Aaron the priest,
λαβὲ τὴν ἀρχὴν πάσης συναγωγῆς υἱῶν Ισραηλ ἀπὸ εἰκοσαετοῦς καὶ ἐπάνω κατ᾿ οἴκους πατριῶν αὐτῶν πᾶς ὁ ἐκπορευόμενος παρατάξασθαι ἐν Ισραηλ
“Take a census of the whole congregation of Israel by the houses of their fathers—all those twenty years of age or older who can serve in the army of Israel.”
καὶ ἐλάλησεν Μωυσῆς καὶ Ελεαζαρ ὁ ἱερεὺς ἐν Αραβωθ Μωαβ ἐπὶ τοῦ Ιορδάνου κατὰ Ιεριχω λέγων
So on the plains of Moab by the Jordan, across from Jericho, Moses and Eleazar the priest issued the instruction,
ἀπὸ εἰκοσαετοῦς καὶ ἐπάνω ὃν τρόπον συνέταξεν κύριος τῷ Μωυσῇ καὶ οἱ υἱοὶ Ισραηλ οἱ ἐξελθόντες ἐξ Αἰγύπτου
“Take a census of the men twenty years of age or older (note: Take a census of the men is implied but not included in the Hebrew; see verse 2.), as the LORD has commanded Moses.” And these were the Israelites who came out of the land of Egypt:
Ρουβην πρωτότοκος Ισραηλ υἱοὶ δὲ Ρουβην Ενωχ καὶ δῆμος τοῦ Ενωχ τῷ Φαλλου δῆμος τοῦ Φαλλουι
Reuben was the firstborn of Israel. These were the descendants of Reuben: The Hanochite clan from Hanoch, the Palluite clan from Pallu,
τῷ Ασρων δῆμος τοῦ Ασρωνι τῷ Χαρμι δῆμος τοῦ Χαρμι
the Hezronite clan from Hezron, and the Carmite clan from Carmi.
οὗτοι δῆμοι Ρουβην καὶ ἐγένετο ἡ ἐπίσκεψις αὐτῶν τρεῖς καὶ τεσσαράκοντα χιλιάδες καὶ ἑπτακόσιοι καὶ τριάκοντα
These were the clans of Reuben, and their registration numbered 43,730.
καὶ υἱοὶ Ελιαβ Ναμουηλ καὶ Δαθαν καὶ Αβιρων οὗτοι ἐπίκλητοι τῆς συναγωγῆς οὗτοί εἰσιν οἱ ἐπισυστάντες ἐπὶ Μωυσῆν καὶ Ααρων ἐν τῇ συναγωγῇ Κορε ἐν τῇ ἐπισυστάσει κυρίου
and the sons of Eliab were Nemuel, Dathan, and Abiram. It was Dathan and Abiram, chosen by the congregation, who rebelled against Moses and Aaron with the followers of Korah who rebelled against the LORD.
καὶ ἀνοίξασα ἡ γῆ τὸ στόμα αὐτῆς κατέπιεν αὐτοὺς καὶ Κορε ἐν τῷ θανάτῳ τῆς συναγωγῆς αὐτοῦ ὅτε κατέφαγεν τὸ πῦρ τοὺς πεντήκοντα καὶ διακοσίους καὶ ἐγενήθησαν ἐν σημείῳ
And the earth opened its mouth and swallowed them along with Korah, whose followers died when the fire consumed 250 men. They serve as a warning sign.
καὶ οἱ υἱοὶ Συμεων ὁ δῆμος τῶν υἱῶν Συμεων τῷ Ναμουηλ δῆμος ὁ Ναμουηλι τῷ Ιαμιν δῆμος ὁ Ιαμινι τῷ Ιαχιν δῆμος ὁ Ιαχινι
These were the descendants of Simeon by their clans: The Nemuelite clan from Nemuel (note: Nemuel is another name for Jemuel; see Genesis 46:10.), the Jaminite clan from Jamin, the Jachinite clan from Jachin,
τῷ Ζαρα δῆμος ὁ Ζαραϊ τῷ Σαουλ δῆμος ὁ Σαουλι
the Zerahite clan from Zerah (note: Zerah is a variant of Zohar; see Genesis 46:10 and Exodus 6:15.), and the Shaulite clan from Shaul.
οὗτοι δῆμοι Συμεων ἐκ τῆς ἐπισκέψεως αὐτῶν δύο καὶ εἴκοσι χιλιάδες καὶ διακόσιοι
These were the clans of Simeon, and there were 22,200 men.
υἱοὶ δὲ Ιουδα Ηρ καὶ Αυναν καὶ ἀπέθανεν Ηρ καὶ Αυναν ἐν γῇ Χανααν
These were the descendants of Gad by their clans: The Zephonite clan from Zephon, the Haggite clan from Haggi, the Shunite clan from Shuni,
ἐγένοντο δὲ οἱ υἱοὶ Ιουδα κατὰ δήμους αὐτῶν τῷ Σηλων δῆμος ὁ Σηλωνι τῷ Φαρες δῆμος ὁ Φαρες τῷ Ζαρα δῆμος ὁ Ζαραϊ
the Oznite clan from Ozni, the Erite clan from Eri,
καὶ ἐγένοντο υἱοὶ Φαρες τῷ Ασρων δῆμος ὁ Ασρωνι τῷ Ιαμουν δῆμος ὁ Ιαμουνι
the Arodite clan from Arod (note: SP and Syriac Arodi; see Genesis 46:16.), and the Arelite clan from Areli.
οὗτοι δῆμοι τῷ Ιουδα κατὰ τὴν ἐπισκοπὴν αὐτῶν ἓξ καὶ ἑβδομήκοντα χιλιάδες καὶ πεντακόσιοι
These were the clans of Gad, and their registration numbered 40,500.
καὶ υἱοὶ Ισσαχαρ κατὰ δήμους αὐτῶν τῷ Θωλα δῆμος ὁ Θωλαϊ τῷ Φουα δῆμος ὁ Φουαϊ
The sons of Judah were Er and Onan, but they died in the land of Canaan.
τῷ Ιασουβ δῆμος ὁ Ιασουβι τῷ Σαμαραν δῆμος ὁ Σαμαρανι
These were the descendants of Judah by their clans: The Shelanite clan from Shelah, the Perezite clan from Perez, and the Zerahite clan from Zerah.
οὗτοι δῆμοι Ισσαχαρ ἐξ ἐπισκέψεως αὐτῶν τέσσαρες καὶ ἑξήκοντα χιλιάδες καὶ τριακόσιοι
And these were the descendants of Perez: the Hezronite clan from Hezron and the Hamulite clan from Hamul.
υἱοὶ Ζαβουλων κατὰ δήμους αὐτῶν τῷ Σαρεδ δῆμος ὁ Σαρεδι τῷ Αλλων δῆμος ὁ Αλλωνι τῷ Αλληλ δῆμος ὁ Αλληλι
These were the clans of Judah, and their registration numbered 76,500.
οὗτοι δῆμοι Ζαβουλων ἐξ ἐπισκέψεως αὐτῶν ἑξήκοντα χιλιάδες καὶ πεντακόσιοι
These were the descendants of Issachar by their clans: The Tolaite clan from Tola, the Punite clan from Puvah (note: SP, LXX, Vulgate, and Syriac the Puite clan from Puah; see 1 Chronicles 7:1.),
υἱοὶ Γαδ κατὰ δήμους αὐτῶν τῷ Σαφων δῆμος ὁ Σαφωνι τῷ Αγγι δῆμος ὁ Αγγι τῷ Σουνι δῆμος ὁ Σουνι
the Jashubite clan from Jashub (note: Jashub is a variant of Job; see Genesis 46:13.), and the Shimronite clan from Shimron.
τῷ Αζενι δῆμος ὁ Αζενι τῷ Αδδι δῆμος ὁ Αδδι
These were the clans of Issachar, and their registration numbered 64,300.
τῷ Αροαδι δῆμος ὁ Αροαδι τῷ Αριηλ δῆμος ὁ Αριηλι
These were the descendants of Zebulun by their clans: The Seredite clan from Sered, the Elonite clan from Elon, and the Jahleelite clan from Jahleel.
οὗτοι δῆμοι υἱῶν Γαδ ἐξ ἐπισκέψεως αὐτῶν τεσσαράκοντα χιλιάδες καὶ πεντακόσιοι
These were the clans of Zebulun, and their registration numbered 60,500.
υἱοὶ Ασηρ κατὰ δήμους αὐτῶν τῷ Ιαμιν δῆμος ὁ Ιαμινι τῷ Ιεσου δῆμος ὁ Ιεσουι τῷ Βαρια δῆμος ὁ Βαριαϊ
The descendants of Joseph included the clans of Manasseh and Ephraim.
τῷ Χοβερ δῆμος ὁ Χοβερι τῷ Μελχιηλ δῆμος ὁ Μελχιηλι
These were the descendants of Manasseh: The Machirite clan from Machir, the father of Gilead, and the Gileadite clan from Gilead.
καὶ τὸ ὄνομα θυγατρὸς Ασηρ Σαρα
These were the descendants of Gilead: the Iezerite clan from Iezer (note: Iezer is a variant of Abiezer; see Joshua 17:2.), the Helekite clan from Helek,
οὗτοι δῆμοι Ασηρ ἐξ ἐπισκέψεως αὐτῶν τρεῖς καὶ πεντήκοντα χιλιάδες καὶ τετρακόσιοι
the Asrielite clan from Asriel, the Shechemite clan from Shechem,
υἱοὶ Ιωσηφ κατὰ δήμους αὐτῶν Μανασση καὶ Εφραιμ
the Shemidaite clan from Shemida, and the Hepherite clan from Hepher.
υἱοὶ Μανασση τῷ Μαχιρ δῆμος ὁ Μαχιρι καὶ Μαχιρ ἐγέννησεν τὸν Γαλααδ τῷ Γαλααδ δῆμος ὁ Γαλααδι
Now Zelophehad son of Hepher had no sons but only daughters. The names of his daughters were Mahlah, Noah, Hoglah, Milcah, and Tirzah.
καὶ οὗτοι υἱοὶ Γαλααδ τῷ Αχιεζερ δῆμος ὁ Αχιεζερι τῷ Χελεγ δῆμος ὁ Χελεγι
These were the clans of Manasseh, and their registration numbered 52,700.
τῷ Εσριηλ δῆμος ὁ Εσριηλι τῷ Συχεμ δῆμος ὁ Συχεμι
These were the descendants of Ephraim by their clans: The Shuthelahite clan from Shuthelah, the Becherite clan from Becher, and the Tahanite clan from Tahan.
τῷ Συμαερ δῆμος ὁ Συμαερι καὶ τῷ Οφερ δῆμος ὁ Οφερι
And the descendants of Shuthelah were the Eranite clan from Eran.
καὶ τῷ Σαλπααδ υἱῷ Οφερ οὐκ ἐγένοντο αὐτῷ υἱοί ἀλλ᾿ ἢ θυγατέρες καὶ ταῦτα τὰ ὀνόματα τῶν θυγατέρων Σαλπααδ Μαλα καὶ Νουα καὶ Εγλα καὶ Μελχα καὶ Θερσα
These were the clans of Ephraim, and their registration numbered 32,500. These clans were the descendants of Joseph.
οὗτοι δῆμοι Μανασση ἐξ ἐπισκέψεως αὐτῶν δύο καὶ πεντήκοντα χιλιάδες καὶ ἑπτακόσιοι
These were the descendants of Benjamin by their clans: The Belaite clan from Bela, the Ashbelite clan from Ashbel, the Ahiramite clan from Ahiram,
καὶ οὗτοι υἱοὶ Εφραιμ τῷ Σουταλα δῆμος ὁ Σουταλαϊ τῷ Ταναχ δῆμος ὁ Ταναχι
the Shuphamite clan from Shupham (note: A few MT manuscripts, SP, Vulgate, and Syriac (see also LXX); most MT manuscripts Shephupham), and the Huphamite clan from Hupham.
οὗτοι υἱοὶ Σουταλα τῷ Εδεν δῆμος ὁ Εδενι
And the descendants of Bela from Ard and Naaman were the Ardite clan from Ard and the Naamite clan from Naaman.
οὗτοι δῆμοι Εφραιμ ἐξ ἐπισκέψεως αὐτῶν δύο καὶ τριάκοντα χιλιάδες καὶ πεντακόσιοι οὗτοι δῆμοι υἱῶν Ιωσηφ κατὰ δήμους αὐτῶν
These were the clans of Benjamin, and their registration numbered 45,600.
υἱοὶ Βενιαμιν κατὰ δήμους αὐτῶν τῷ Βαλε δῆμος ὁ Βαλεϊ τῷ Ασυβηρ δῆμος ὁ Ασυβηρι τῷ Ιαχιραν δῆμος ὁ Ιαχιρανι
These were the descendants of Dan by their clans: The Shuhamite clan from Shuham. These were the clans of Dan.
τῷ Σωφαν δῆμος ὁ Σωφανι
All of them were Shuhamite clans, and their registration numbered 64,400.
καὶ ἐγένοντο οἱ υἱοὶ Βαλε Αδαρ καὶ Νοεμαν τῷ Αδαρ δῆμος ὁ Αδαρι τῷ Νοεμαν δῆμος ὁ Νοεμανι
These were the descendants of Asher by their clans: The Imnite clan from Imnah, the Ishvite clan from Ishvi, and the Beriite clan from Beriah.
οὗτοι υἱοὶ Βενιαμιν κατὰ δήμους αὐτῶν ἐξ ἐπισκέψεως αὐτῶν πέντε καὶ τεσσαράκοντα χιλιάδες καὶ ἑξακόσιοι
And these were the descendants of Beriah: the Heberite clan from Heber and the Malchielite clan from Malchiel.
καὶ υἱοὶ Δαν κατὰ δήμους αὐτῶν τῷ Σαμι δῆμος ὁ Σαμι οὗτοι δῆμοι Δαν κατὰ δήμους αὐτῶν
And the name of Asher’s daughter was Serah.
πάντες οἱ δῆμοι Σαμι κατ᾿ ἐπισκοπὴν αὐτῶν τέσσαρες καὶ ἑξήκοντα χιλιάδες καὶ τετρακόσιοι
These were the clans of Asher, and their registration numbered 53,400.
υἱοὶ Νεφθαλι κατὰ δήμους αὐτῶν τῷ Ασιηλ δῆμος ὁ Ασιηλι τῷ Γαυνι δῆμος ὁ Γαυνι
These were the descendants of Naphtali by their clans: The Jahzeelite clan from Jahzeel, the Gunite clan from Guni,
τῷ Ιεσερ δῆμος ὁ Ιεσερι τῷ Σελλημ δῆμος ὁ Σελλημι
the Jezerite clan from Jezer, and the Shillemite clan from Shillem.
οὗτοι δῆμοι Νεφθαλι ἐξ ἐπισκέψεως αὐτῶν πέντε καὶ τεσσαράκοντα χιλιάδες καὶ τετρακόσιοι
These were the clans of Naphtali, and their registration numbered 45,400.
αὕτη ἡ ἐπίσκεψις υἱῶν Ισραηλ ἑξακόσιαι χιλιάδες καὶ χίλιοι καὶ ἑπτακόσιοι καὶ τριάκοντα
These men of Israel numbered 601,730 in all.
τούτοις μερισθήσεται ἡ γῆ κληρονομεῖν ἐξ ἀριθμοῦ ὀνομάτων
“The land is to be divided among the tribes as an inheritance, according to the number of names.
τοῖς πλείοσιν πλεονάσεις τὴν κληρονομίαν καὶ τοῖς ἐλάττοσιν ἐλαττώσεις τὴν κληρονομίαν αὐτῶν ἑκάστῳ καθὼς ἐπεσκέπησαν δοθήσεται ἡ κληρονομία αὐτῶν
Increase the inheritance for a large tribe and decrease it for a small one; each tribe is to receive its inheritance according to the number of those registered.
διὰ κλήρων μερισθήσεται ἡ γῆ τοῖς ὀνόμασιν κατὰ φυλὰς πατριῶν αὐτῶν κληρονομήσουσιν
Indeed, the land must be divided by lot; they shall receive their inheritance according to the names of the tribes of their fathers.
ἐκ τοῦ κλήρου μεριεῖς τὴν κληρονομίαν αὐτῶν ἀνὰ μέσον πολλῶν καὶ ὀλίγων
Each inheritance is to be divided by lot among the larger and smaller tribes.”
καὶ υἱοὶ Λευι κατὰ δήμους αὐτῶν τῷ Γεδσων δῆμος ὁ Γεδσωνι τῷ Κααθ δῆμος ὁ Κααθι τῷ Μεραρι δῆμος ὁ Μεραρι
Now these were the Levites numbered by their clans: The Gershonite clan from Gershon, the Kohathite clan from Kohath, and the Merarite clan from Merari.
οὗτοι δῆμοι υἱῶν Λευι δῆμος ὁ Λοβενι δῆμος ὁ Χεβρωνι δῆμος ὁ Κορε καὶ δῆμος ὁ Μουσι καὶ Κααθ ἐγέννησεν τὸν Αμραμ
These were the families of the Levites: The Libnite clan, the Hebronite clan, the Mahlite clan, the Mushite clan, and the Korahite clan. Now Kohath was the father of Amram,
καὶ τὸ ὄνομα τῆς γυναικὸς αὐτοῦ Ιωχαβεδ θυγάτηρ Λευι ἣ ἔτεκεν τούτους τῷ Λευι ἐν Αἰγύπτῳ καὶ ἔτεκεν τῷ Αμραμ τὸν Ααρων καὶ Μωυσῆν καὶ Μαριαμ τὴν ἀδελφὴν αὐτῶν
and Amram’s wife was named Jochebed. She was also a daughter of Levi, born to Levi in Egypt. To Amram she bore Aaron, Moses, and their sister Miriam.
καὶ ἐγεννήθησαν τῷ Ααρων ὅ τε Ναδαβ καὶ Αβιουδ καὶ Ελεαζαρ καὶ Ιθαμαρ
Nadab, Abihu, Eleazar, and Ithamar were born to Aaron,
καὶ ἀπέθανεν Ναδαβ καὶ Αβιουδ ἐν τῷ προσφέρειν αὐτοὺς πῦρ ἀλλότριον ἔναντι κυρίου ἐν τῇ ἐρήμῳ Σινα
but Nadab and Abihu died when they offered unauthorized (note: Or strange) fire before the LORD.
καὶ ἐγενήθησαν ἐξ ἐπισκέψεως αὐτῶν τρεῖς καὶ εἴκοσι χιλιάδες πᾶν ἀρσενικὸν ἀπὸ μηνιαίου καὶ ἐπάνω οὐ γὰρ συνεπεσκέπησαν ἐν μέσῳ υἱῶν Ισραηλ ὅτι οὐ δίδοται αὐτοῖς κλῆρος ἐν μέσῳ υἱῶν Ισραηλ
The registration of the Levites totaled 23,000, every male a month old or more; they were not numbered among the other Israelites, because no inheritance was given to them among the Israelites.
καὶ αὕτη ἡ ἐπίσκεψις Μωυσῆ καὶ Ελεαζαρ τοῦ ἱερέως οἳ ἐπεσκέψαντο τοὺς υἱοὺς Ισραηλ ἐν Αραβωθ Μωαβ ἐπὶ τοῦ Ιορδάνου κατὰ Ιεριχω
These were the ones numbered by Moses and Eleazar the priest when they counted the Israelites on the plains of Moab by the Jordan, across from Jericho.
καὶ ἐν τούτοις οὐκ ἦν ἄνθρωπος τῶν ἐπεσκεμμένων ὑπὸ Μωυσῆ καὶ Ααρων οὓς ἐπεσκέψαντο τοὺς υἱοὺς Ισραηλ ἐν τῇ ἐρήμῳ Σινα
Among all these, however, there was not one who had been numbered by Moses and Aaron the priest when they counted the Israelites in the Wilderness of Sinai.
ὅτι εἶπεν κύριος αὐτοῖς θανάτῳ ἀποθανοῦνται ἐν τῇ ἐρήμῳ καὶ οὐ κατελείφθη ἐξ αὐτῶν οὐδὲ εἷς πλὴν Χαλεβ υἱὸς Ιεφοννη καὶ Ἰησοῦς ὁ τοῦ Ναυη
For the LORD had told them that they would surely die in the wilderness. Not one was left except Caleb son of Jephunneh and Joshua son of Nun.
