Βαλαὰμ ὅτι καλόν ἐστιν ἔναντι κυρίου εὐλογεῖν τὸν ᾿Ισραήλ, οὐκ ἐπορεύθη κατὰ τὸ εἰωθὸς εἰς συνάντησιν τοῖς οἰωνοῖς, καὶ ἀπέστρεψεν τὸ πρόσωπον εἰς τὴν ἔρημον.
And when Balaam saw that it pleased the LORD to bless Israel, he did not seek omens as on previous occasions, but he turned his face toward the wilderness.
καὶ ἐξάρας Βαλαὰμ τοὺς ὀφθαλμοὺς αὐτοῦ καθορᾷ τὸν ᾿Ισραὴλ ἐστρατοπεδευκότα κατὰ φυλάς. καὶ ἐγένετο πνεῦμα θεοῦ ἐν αὐτῷ.
When Balaam looked up and saw Israel encamped tribe by tribe, the Spirit of God came upon him,
καὶ ἀναλαβὼν τὴν παραβολὴν αὐτοῦ εἶπεν Φησὶν Βαλαὰμ υἱὸς Βεώρ, φησὶν ὁ ἄνθρωπος ὁ ἀληθινῶς ὁρῶν,
and he lifted up an oracle, saying: “This is the prophecy of Balaam son of Beor, the prophecy of a man whose eyes are open,
φησὶν ἀκούων λόγια θεοῦ, ὅστις ὅρασιν θεοῦ εἶδεν, ἐν ὕπνῳ, ἀποκεκαλυμμένοι οἱ ὀφθαλμοὶ αὐτοῦ·
the prophecy of one who hears the words of God, who sees a vision from the Almighty (note: Hebrew Shaddai; also in verse 16), who bows down with eyes wide open:
ὡς καλοί σου οἱ οἶκοι, ᾿Ιακώβ, αἱ σκηναί σου, Ἰσραήλ·
How lovely are your tents, O Jacob, your dwellings, O Israel!
ὡς νάπαι σκιάζουσαι, καὶ ὡσεὶ παράδεισος ἐπὶ ποταμῶν· καὶ ὡσεὶ σκηναὶ ἃς ἔπηξεν κύριος, ὡσεὶ κέδροι παρ’ ὕδατα.
They spread out like palm groves (note: Or like valleys), like gardens beside a stream, like aloes the LORD has planted, like cedars beside the waters.
ἐξελεύσεται ἄνθρωπος ἐκ τοῦ σπέρματος αὐτοῦ, καὶ κυριεύσει ἐθνῶν πολλῶν· καὶ ὑψωθήσεται ἢ Γὼγ βασιλεία, καὶ αὐξηθήσεται ἡ βασιλεία αὐτοῦ.
Water will flow from his buckets, and his seed will have abundant water. His king will be greater than Agag, and his kingdom will be exalted.
θεὸς ὡδήγησεν αὐτὸν ἐξ Αἰγύπτου, ὡς δόξα μονοκέρωτος αὐτῶ· ἔδεται ἔθνη ἐχθρῶν αὐτοῦ, καὶ τὰ πάχη αὐτῶν ἐκμυελιεῖν, καὶ ταῖς βολίσιν αὐτοῦ κατατοξεύσει ἐχθρόν.
God brought him out of Egypt with strength like a wild ox, to devour hostile nations and crush their bones, to pierce them with arrows.
κατακλιθεὶς ἀνεπαύσατο ὡς λέων καὶ ὡς σκύμνος· τίς ἀναστήσει αὐτόν ; οἱ εὐλογοῦντές σε εὐλόγηνται, καὶ οἱ καταρώμενοί σε κεκατήρανται.
He crouches, he lies down like a lion, like a lioness—who dares to rouse him? Blessed are those who bless you and cursed are those who curse you.”
καὶ ἐθυμώθη Βαλὰκ ἐπὶ Βαλαάμ, καὶ συνεκρότησεν ταῖς χερσὶν αὐτοῦ. καὶ εἶπεν Βαλὰκ πρὸς Βαλαάμ Καταρᾶσθαι τὸν ἐχθρόν μου κέκληκά σε, καὶ ἰδοὺ εὐλογῶν εὐλόγησας τρίτον τοῦτο.
Then Balak’s anger burned against Balaam, and he struck his hands together and said to Balaam, “I summoned you to curse my enemies, but behold, you have persisted in blessing them these three times.
νῦν οὖν φεῦγε εἰς τὸν τόπον σου· εἶπα τιμήσω σε, καὶ νῦν ἐστέρεσέν σε κύριος τῆς δόξης.
Therefore, flee at once to your home! I said I would reward you richly, but instead the LORD has denied your reward.”
καὶ εἶπεν Βαλαὰμ πρὸς Βαλάκ οὐχὶ καὶ τοῖς ἀγγέλοις σου οὓς ἀπέστειλας πρὸς μὲ ἐλάλησα λέγων
Balaam answered Balak, “Did I not already tell the messengers you sent me
᾿Εάν μοι δῷ Βαλὰκ πλήρη τὸν οἶκον αὐτοῦ ἀργυρίου καὶ χρυσίου, οὐ δυνήσομαι παραβῆναι τὸ ῥῆμα κυρίου, ποιῆσαι αὐτὸ πονηρὸν ἢ καλὸν παρ’ ἐμαυτοῦ· ὃσα ἐὰν εἴπῃ ὁ θεός, ταῦτα ἐρῶ.
that even if Balak were to give me his house full of silver and gold, I could not do anything of my own accord, good or bad, to go beyond the command of the LORD? I must speak whatever the LORD says.
καὶ νῦν ἰδοὺ ἀποτρέχω εἰς τὸν τόπον μου· δεῦρο συμβουλεύσω σοι τί ποιήσει ὁ λαὸς οὗτος τὸν λαόν σου ἐπ’ ἐσχάτου τῶν ἡμερῶν.
Now I am going back to my people, but come, let me warn you what this people will do to your people in the days to come.”
καὶ ἀναλαβὼν τὴν παραβολὴν αὐτοῦ εἶπεν Φησὶν Βαλαὰμ υἱὸς Βεώρ, φησὶν ὁ ἄνθρωπος ὁ ἀληθινὸς ὁρῶν,
Then Balaam lifted up an oracle, saying, “This is the prophecy of Balaam son of Beor, the prophecy of a man whose eyes are open,
ἀκούων λόγια θεοῦ, ἐπιστάμενος ἐπιστήμην παρὰ ῾Υψίστου, καὶ ὅρασιν θεοῦ ἰδών, ἐν ὕπνῳ, ἀποκεκαλυμμένοι οἱ ὀφθαλμοὶ αὐτοῦ·
the prophecy of one who hears the words of God, who has knowledge from the Most High, who sees a vision from the Almighty, who bows down with eyes wide open:
δείξω αὐτῷ, καὶ οὐχὶ νῦν· ἀνατελεῖ ἄστρον ἐξ Ἰακώβ καὶ ἀναστήσεται ἄνθρωπος ἐξ Ἰσραήλ, καὶ θραύσει τοὺς ἀρχηγοὺς Μωάβ, καὶ προνομεύσει πάντας υἱοὺς Σήθ.
I see him, but not now; I behold him, but not near. A star will come forth from Jacob, and a scepter will arise from Israel. He will crush the skulls (note: SP foreheads; Hebrew corners (of the head); LXX princes) of Moab and strike down all the sons of Sheth.
καὶ ἱστᾶι ᾿Εδὼμ κληρονομία, καὶ ἔσται κληρονομία Ἠσαῦ ὁ ἐχθρὸς αὐτοῦ· καὶ Ἰσραὴλ ἐποίησεν ἐν ἰσχύι.
Edom will become a possession, as will Seir, his enemy; but Israel will perform with valor.
καὶ έξεγερθήσεται ἐξ Ἰακώβ, καὶ ἀπολεῖ σωζόμενον ἐκ πόλεως.
A ruler will come from Jacob and destroy the survivors of the city.”
καὶ ἰδὼν τὸν Ἀμαλὴκ καὶ ἀναλαβὼν τὴν παραβολὴν αὐτοῦ εἶπεν Ἀρχὴ ἐθνῶν ᾿Αμαλήκ, καὶ τὸ σπέρμα αὐτῶν ἀπολεῖται.
Then Balaam saw Amalek and lifted up an oracle, saying: “Amalek was first among the nations, but his end is destruction.”
καὶ ἰδὼν τὸν Κεναῖον καὶ ἀναλαβὼν τὴν παραβολὴν αὐτοῦ εἶπεν Ἰσχυρὰ ἡ κατοικία σου· καὶ ἐὰν θῇς ἐν πέτρᾳ τὴν νοσσιάν σου,
Next he saw the Kenites and lifted up an oracle, saying: “Your dwelling place is secure, and your nest is set in a cliff.
καὶ ἐὰν γένηται τῷ Βεὼρ νεοσσιὰ πανουργίας, Ἀσσύριοί σε αἰχμαλωτεύσουσιν.
Yet Kain will be destroyed when Asshur (note: Or Assyria; also in verse 24) takes you captive.”
καὶ ἰδὼν Ὤγ καὶ ἀναλαβὼν τὴν παραβολὴν αὐτοῦ εἶπεν *Ὤ ὤ, τίς ζήσεται ὅταν θῇ ταῦτα ὁ θεός;
Once more Balaam lifted up an oracle, saying: “Ah, who can live unless God has ordained it?
καὶ ἐξελεύσεται ἐκ χειρὸς Κιτιαίων, καὶ κακώσουσιν ᾿Ασσούρ, καὶ κακώσουσιν ᾿Εβραίους, καὶ αὐτοὶ ὁμοθυμαδὸν ἀπολοῦνται.
Ships will come from the coasts of Cyprus (note: Hebrew Kittim); they will subdue Asshur and Eber, but they too will perish forever.”
καὶ ἀναστὰς Βαλαὰμ ἀπῆλθεν, ἀποστραφεὶς εἰς τὸν τόπον αὐτοῦ· καὶ Βαλὰκ ἀπῆλθεν πρὸς ἑαυτόν.
Then Balaam arose and returned to his homeland, and Balak also went on his way.
