Da aber Saneballat und Tobia und die Araber und Ammoniter und Asdoditer hörten, dass die Mauern zu Jerusalem zugemacht wurden und dass sie die Lücken hatten angefangen zu verschließen, wurden sie sehr zornig
Now when Sanballat heard that we were rebuilding the wall, he was furious and filled with indignation. He ridiculed the Jews
und machten allesamt einen Bund zuhaufen, dass sie kämen und stritten wider Jerusalem und richteten darin Verwirrung an.
before his associates and the army of Samaria, saying, “What are these feeble Jews doing? Can they restore the wall by themselves (note: Or Will they commit themselves to God?)? Will they offer sacrifices? Will they complete it in a day? Can they bring these burnt stones back to life from the mounds of rubble?”
Wir aber beteten zu unsrem Gott und stellten Hut gegen sie Tag und Nacht vor ihnen.
Then Tobiah the Ammonite, who was beside him, said, “If even a fox were to climb up on what they are building, it would break down their wall of stones!”
Und Juda sprach: Die Kraft der Träger ist zu schwach, und des Schuttes ist zu viel; wir können nicht an der Mauer bauen.
Hear us, O God, for we are despised. Turn their scorn back upon their own heads, and let them be taken as plunder to a land of captivity.
Unsre Widersacher aber gedachten: Sie sollen's nicht wissen noch sehen, bis wir mitten unter sie kommen und sie erwürgen und das Werk hindern.
Do not cover up their iniquity or let their sin be blotted out from Your sight, for they have provoked the builders (note: Or have provoked You to anger before the builders).
Da aber die Juden, die neben ihnen wohnten, kamen, und sagten's uns wohl zehnmal, aus allen Orten, da sie um uns wohnten,
So we rebuilt the wall until all of it was joined together up to half its height, for the people had a mind to work.
da stellte ich unten an die Orte hinter der Mauer in die Gräben das Volk nach ihren Geschlechtern mit ihren Schwertern, Spießen und Bogen.
When Sanballat and Tobiah, together with the Arabs, Ammonites, and Ashdodites, heard that the repair to the walls of Jerusalem was progressing and that the gaps were being closed, they were furious,
Und ich besah es und machte mich auf und sprach zu den Ratsherren und Obersten und dem andern Volk: Fürchtet euch nicht vor ihnen; gedenkt an den großen, schrecklichen HErrn und streitet für eure Brüder, Söhne, Töchter, Weiber und Häuser!
and all of them conspired to come and fight against Jerusalem and create a hindrance.
Da aber unsre Feinde hörten, dass es uns kund war geworden und Gott ihren Rat zunichte gemacht hatte, kehrten wir alle wieder zur Mauer, ein jeglicher zu seiner Arbeit.
So we prayed to our God and posted a guard against them day and night.
Und es geschah von hier an, dass der Jünglinge die Hälfte taten die Arbeit, die andere Hälfte hielten die Spieße, Schilde, Bogen und Panzer. Und die Obersten standen hinter dem ganzen Hause Juda,
Meanwhile, the people of Judah said (note: Or Meanwhile, Judah said): “The strength of the laborer fails, and there is so much rubble that we will never be able to rebuild the wall.”
die da bauten an der Mauer. Und die da Last trugen von denen, die ihnen aufluden, mit einer Hand taten sie die Arbeit, und mit der andern hielten sie die Waffe.
And our enemies said, “Before they know or see a thing, we will come into their midst, kill them, and put an end to the work.”
Und ein jeglicher, der da baute, hatte sein Schwert an seine Lenden gegürtet und baute also; und der mit der Posaune blies, war neben mir.
At that time the Jews who lived nearby came and told us ten times over, “Wherever you turn, they will attack us.”
Und ich sprach zu den Ratsherren und Obersten und zum andern Volk: Das Werk ist groß und weit, und wir sind zerstreut auf der Mauer, ferne voneinander.
So I stationed men behind the lowest sections of the wall, at the vulnerable areas. I stationed them by families with their swords, spears, and bows.
An welchem Ort ihr nun die Posaune tönen hört, dahin versammelt euch zu uns. Unser Gott wird für uns streiten.
After I had made an inspection, I stood up and said to the nobles, the officials, and the rest of the people, “Do not be afraid of them. Remember the Lord, who is great and awesome, and fight for your brothers, your sons and your daughters, your wives and your homes.”
So arbeiteten wir am Werk, und ihre Hälfte hielt die Spieße von dem Aufgang der Morgenröte, bis die Sterne hervorkamen.
When our enemies heard that we were aware of their scheme and that God had frustrated it, each of us returned to his own work on the wall.
Auch sprach ich zu der Zeit zum Volk: Ein jeglicher bleibe mit seinen Leuten über Nacht zu Jerusalem, dass sie uns des Nachts der Hut und des Tages der Arbeit warten.
And from that day on, half of my servants did the work while the other half held spears, shields, bows, and armor. The officers stationed themselves behind all the people of Judah
Aber ich und meine Brüder und meine Leute und die Männer an der Hut hinter mir, wir zogen unsre Kleider nicht aus; ein jeglicher ließ das Baden anstehen.
who were rebuilding the wall. The laborers who carried materials worked with one hand and held a weapon with the other.
