Simon the Zealot (note: Greek Simon the Cananean), and Judas Iscariot, who betrayed Jesus.
Jesus sent these twelve out and commanded them, saying, “Don’t go amongst the Gentiles, and don’t enter into any city of the Samaritans. *
These twelve Jesus sent out with the following instructions: “Do not go onto the road of the Gentiles or enter any town of the Samaritans.
As you go, preach, saying, ‘The Kingdom of Heaven is at hand!’ *
As you go, preach this message: ‘The kingdom of heaven is near.’
Heal the sick, cleanse the lepers,* and cast out demons. Freely you received, so freely give. *
Heal the sick, raise the dead, cleanse the lepers, drive out demons. Freely you have received; freely give.
Don’t take any gold, silver, or brass in your money belts. *
Do not take along any gold or silver or copper in your belts.
Take no bag for your journey, neither two coats, nor sandals, nor staff: for the labourer is worthy of his food. *
Take no bag for the road, or second tunic, or sandals, or staff; for the worker is worthy of his provisions.
Into whatever city or village you enter, find out who in it is worthy, and stay there until you go on. *
Whatever town or village you enter, find out who is worthy there and stay at his house until you move on.
If the household is worthy, let your peace come on it, but if it isn’t worthy, let your peace return to you. *
If the home is worthy, let your peace rest on it, but if it is not, let your peace return to you.
Whoever doesn’t receive you or hear your words, as you go out of that house or that city, shake the dust off your feet. *
And if anyone will not welcome you or heed your words, shake the dust off your feet when you leave that home or town.
Most certainly I tell you, it will be more tolerable for the land of Sodom and Gomorrah in the day of judgement than for that city.*
Truly I tell you, it will be more bearable for Sodom and Gomorrah on the day of judgment than for that town.
“Behold, I send you out as sheep amongst wolves. Therefore be wise as serpents and harmless as doves. *
Behold, I am sending you out like sheep among wolves; therefore be as shrewd as snakes and as innocent as doves.
But beware of men, for they will deliver you up to councils, and in their synagogues they will scourge you. *
But beware of men, for they will hand you over to their councils and flog you in their synagogues.
Yes, and you will be brought before governors and kings for my sake, for a testimony to them and to the nations. *
On My account you will be brought before governors and kings as witnesses to them and to the Gentiles.
But when they deliver you up, don’t be anxious how or what you will say, for it will be given you in that hour what you will say. *
But when they hand you over, do not worry about how to respond or what to say. In that hour you will be given what to say.
For it is not you who speak, but the Spirit of your Father who speaks in you.*
For it will not be you speaking, but the Spirit of your Father speaking through you.
“Brother will deliver up brother to death, and the father his child. Children will rise up against parents and cause them to be put to death. *
Brother will betray brother to death, and a father his child; children will rise against their parents and have them put to death.
You will be hated by all men for my name’s sake, but he who endures to the end will be saved. *
You will be hated by everyone because of My name, but the one who perseveres to the end will be saved.
But when they persecute you in this city, flee into the next, for most certainly I tell you, you will not have gone through the cities of Israel until the Son of Man has come.*
When they persecute you in one town, flee to the next. Truly I tell you, you will not reach all the towns of Israel before the Son of Man comes.
“A disciple is not above his teacher, nor a servant above his lord. *
A disciple is not above his teacher, nor a servant above his master.
It is enough for the disciple that he be like his teacher, and the servant like his lord. If they have called the master of the house Beelzebul,* how much more those of his household! *
It is enough for a disciple to be like his teacher, and a servant like his master. If the head of the house has been called Beelzebul (note: WH Beezeboul; Vulgate Beelzebub), how much more the members of his household!
Therefore don’t be afraid of them, for there is nothing covered that will not be revealed, or hidden that will not be known. *
So do not be afraid of them. For there is nothing concealed that will not be disclosed, and nothing hidden that will not be made known.
What I tell you in the darkness, speak in the light; and what you hear whispered in the ear, proclaim on the housetops. *
What I tell you in the dark, speak in the daylight; what is whispered in your ear, proclaim from the housetops.
Don’t be afraid of those who kill the body, but are not able to kill the soul. Rather, fear him who is able to destroy both soul and body in Gehenna.*
Do not be afraid of those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul. Instead, fear the One who can destroy both soul and body in hell (note: Greek Gehenna).
“Aren’t two sparrows sold for an assarion coin?* Not one of them falls to the ground apart from your Father’s will. *
Are not two sparrows sold for a penny (note: Greek an assarion; that is, a Roman copper coin worth about 1/16 of a denarius)? Yet not one of them will fall to the ground apart from the will of your Father.
But the very hairs of your head are all numbered. *
And even the very hairs of your head are all numbered.
Therefore don’t be afraid. You are of more value than many sparrows. *
So do not be afraid; you are worth more than many sparrows.
Everyone therefore who confesses me before men, I will also confess him before my Father who is in heaven. *
Therefore everyone who confesses Me before men, I will also confess him before My Father in heaven.
But whoever denies me before men, I will also deny him before my Father who is in heaven.*
But whoever denies Me before men, I will also deny him before My Father in heaven.
“Don’t think that I came to send peace on the earth. I didn’t come to send peace, but a sword. *
Do not assume that I have come to bring peace to the earth; I have not come to bring peace, but a sword.
For I came to set a man at odds against his father, and a daughter against her mother, and a daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law. *
For I have come to turn ‘a man against his father, a daughter against her mother, a daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law.
A man’s foes will be those of his own household.*
A man’s enemies will be the members of his own household (note: Micah 7:6).’
He who loves father or mother more than me is not worthy of me; and he who loves son or daughter more than me isn’t worthy of me. *
Anyone who loves his father or mother more than Me is not worthy of Me; anyone who loves his son or daughter more than Me is not worthy of Me;
He who doesn’t take his cross and follow after me isn’t worthy of me. *
and anyone who does not take up his cross and follow Me is not worthy of Me.
He who seeks his life will lose it; and he who loses his life for my sake will find it. *
Whoever finds his life will lose it, and whoever loses his life for My sake will find it.
“He who receives you receives me, and he who receives me receives him who sent me. *
He who receives you receives Me, and he who receives Me receives the One who sent Me.
He who receives a prophet in the name of a prophet will receive a prophet’s reward. He who receives a righteous man in the name of a righteous man will receive a righteous man’s reward. *
Whoever receives a prophet because he is a prophet will receive a prophet’s reward, and whoever receives a righteous man because he is a righteous man will receive a righteous man’s reward.
Whoever gives one of these little ones just a cup of cold water to drink in the name of a disciple, most certainly I tell you, he will in no way lose his reward.”*
And if anyone gives even a cup of cold water to one of these little ones because he is My disciple, truly I tell you, he will never lose his reward.”
