Et confestim mane consilium facientes summi sacerdotes cum senioribus, et scribis, et universo concilio, vincientes Jesum, duxerunt, et tradiderunt Pilato.
Early in the morning, the chief priests, elders, scribes, and the whole Sanhedrin (note: Or the whole Council) devised a plan. They bound Jesus, led Him away, and handed Him over to Pilate.
Et interrogavit eum Pilatus : Tu es rex Judæorum ? At ille respondens, ait illi : Tu dicis.
So Pilate questioned Him, “Are You the King of the Jews?” “You have said so,” Jesus replied.
Et accusabant eum summi sacerdotes in multis.
And the chief priests began to accuse Him of many things.
Pilatus autem rursum interrogavit eum, dicens : Non respondes quidquam ? vide in quantis te accusant.
Then Pilate questioned Him again, “Have You no answer? Look how many charges they are bringing against You!”
Jesus autem amplius nihil respondit, ita ut miraretur Pilatus.
But to Pilate’s amazement, Jesus made no further reply.
Per diem autem festum solebat dimittere illis unum ex vinctis, quemcumque petissent.
Now it was Pilate’s custom at the feast to release to the people a prisoner of their choosing.
Erat autem qui dicebatur Barrabas, qui cum seditiosis erat vinctus, qui in seditione fecerat homicidium.
And a man named Barabbas was imprisoned with the rebels who had committed murder during the insurrection.
Et cum ascendisset turba, cœpit rogare, sicut semper faciebat illis.
So the crowd went up and began asking Pilate to keep his custom.
Pilatus autem respondit eis, et dixit : Vultis dimittam vobis regem Judæorum ?
“Do you want me to release to you the King of the Jews?” Pilate asked.
Sciebat enim quod per invidiam tradidissent eum summi sacerdotes.
For he knew it was out of envy that the chief priests had handed Jesus over.
Pontifices autem concitaverunt turbam, ut magis Barabbam dimitteret eis.
But the chief priests stirred up the crowd to have him release Barabbas to them instead.
Pilatus autem iterum respondens, ait illis : Quid ergo vultis faciam regi Judæorum ?
So Pilate asked them again, “What then do you want me to do with the One you call the King of the Jews?”
Pilatus vero dicebat illis : Quid enim mali fecit ? At illi magis clamabant : Crucifige eum.
“Why?” asked Pilate. “What evil has He done?” But they shouted all the louder, “Crucify Him!”
Pilatus autem volens populo satisfacere, dimisit illis Barabbam, et tradidit Jesum flagellis cæsum, ut crucifigeretur.
And wishing to satisfy the crowd, Pilate released Barabbas to them. But he had Jesus flogged, and handed Him over to be crucified.
Milites autem duxerunt eum in atrium prætorii, et convocant totam cohortem,
Then the soldiers led Jesus away into the palace (that is, the Praetorium) and called the whole company together.
et induunt eum purpura, et imponunt ei plectentes spineam coronam.
They dressed Him in a purple robe, twisted together a crown of thorns, and set it on His head.
Et cœperunt salutare eum : Ave rex Judæorum.
And they began to salute Him: “Hail, King of the Jews!”
Et percutiebant caput ejus arundine : et conspuebant eum, et ponentes genua, adorabant eum.
They kept striking His head with a staff and spitting on Him. And they knelt down and bowed before Him.
Et postquam illuserunt ei, exuerunt illum purpura, et induerunt eum vestimentis suis : et educunt illum ut crucifigerent eum.
After they had mocked Him, they removed the purple robe and put His own clothes back on Him. Then they led Him out to crucify Him.
Et angariaverunt prætereuntem quempiam, Simonem Cyrenæum venientem de villa, patrem Alexandri et Rufi, ut tolleret crucem ejus.
Now Simon of Cyrene, the father of Alexander and Rufus, was passing by on his way in from the country, and the soldiers forced him to carry the cross of Jesus.
Et perducunt illum in Golgotha locum : quod est interpretatum Calvariæ locus.
They brought Jesus to a place called Golgotha, which means The Place of the Skull.
Et dabant ei bibere myrrhatum vinum : et non accepit.
There they offered Him wine mixed with myrrh, but He did not take it.
Et crucifigentes eum, diviserunt vestimenta ejus, mittentes sortem super eis, quis quid tolleret.
And they crucified Him. They also divided His garments by casting lots to decide what each of them would take (note: See Psalm 22:18.).
Erat autem hora tertia : et crucifixerunt eum.
It was the third hour (note: That is, nine in the morning) when they crucified Him.
Et erat titulus causæ ejus inscriptus : Rex Judæorum.
And the charge inscribed against Him read: THE KING OF THE JEWS.
Et cum eo crucifigunt duos latrones : unum a dextris, et alium a sinistris ejus.
Along with Jesus, they crucified two robbers (note: Or insurrectionists), one on His right and one on His left (note: BYZ and TR include 28So the Scripture was fulfilled that says, “And He was numbered with the transgressors.” See Isaiah 53:12 and Luke 22:37.).
Et prætereuntes blasphemabant eum, moventes capita sua, et dicentes : Vah ! qui destruis templum Dei, et in tribus diebus reædificas,
And those who passed by heaped abuse on Him, shaking their heads and saying, “Aha! You who are going to destroy the temple and rebuild it in three days,
Similiter et summi sacerdotes illudentes, ad alterutrum cum scribis dicebant : Alios salvos fecit ; seipsum non potest salvum facere.
In the same way, the chief priests and scribes mocked Him among themselves, saying, “He saved others, but He cannot save Himself!
Christus rex Israël descendat nunc de cruce, ut videamus, et credamus. Et qui cum eo crucifixi erant, convitiabantur ei.
Let the Christ, the King of Israel, come down now from the cross, so that we may see and believe!” And even those who were crucified with Him berated Him.
Et facta hora sexta, tenebræ factæ sunt per totam terram usque in horam nonam.
From the sixth hour (note: That is, from noon until three in the afternoon) until the ninth hour darkness came over all the land.
Et hora nona exclamavit Jesus voce magna, dicens : Eloi, eloi, lamma sabacthani ? quod est interpretatum : Deus meus, Deus meus, ut quid dereliquisti me ?
At the ninth hour, Jesus cried out in a loud voice, “Eloi, Eloi, lema sabachthani?” which means, “My God, My God, why have You forsaken Me (note: Psalm 22:1)?”
Et quidam de circumstantibus audientes, dicebant : Ecce Eliam vocat.
When some of those standing nearby heard this, they said, “Behold, He is calling Elijah.”
Currens autem unus, et implens spongiam aceto, circumponensque calamo, potum dabat ei, dicens : Sinite, videamus si veniat Elias ad deponendum eum.
And someone ran and filled a sponge with sour wine (note: Or a sponge with wine vinegar). He put it on a reed and held it up for Jesus to drink, saying, “Leave Him alone. Let us see if Elijah comes to take Him down.”
Et velum templi scissum est in duo, a summo usque deorsum.
And the veil of the temple was torn in two from top to bottom.
Videns autem centurio, qui ex adverso stabat, quia sic clamans expirasset, ait : Vere hic homo Filius Dei erat.
When the centurion standing there in front of Jesus saw how He had breathed His last (note: BYZ and TR saw how, having cried out, He had breathed His last), he said, “Truly this man was the Son of God!”
Erant autem et mulieres de longe aspicientes : inter quas erat Maria Magdalene, et Maria Jacobi minoris, et Joseph mater, et Salome :
And there were also women watching from a distance. Among them were Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of James the younger and of Joses (note: Joses is a variant of Joseph; see Matthew 27:56.), and Salome.
et cum esset in Galilæa, sequebantur eum, et ministrabant ei, et aliæ multæ, quæ simul cum eo ascenderant Jerosolymam.
These women had followed Jesus and ministered to Him while He was in Galilee, and there were many other women who had come up to Jerusalem with Him.
Et cum jam sero esset factum (quia erat parasceve, quod est ante sabbatum),
Now it was already evening. Since it was Preparation Day (that is, the day before the Sabbath),
venit Joseph ab Arimathæa nobilis decurio, qui et ipse erat exspectans regnum Dei, et audacter introivit ad Pilatum, et petiit corpus Jesu.
Joseph of Arimathea, a prominent Council member who himself was waiting for the kingdom of God, boldly went to Pilate to ask for the body of Jesus.
Pilatus autem mirabatur si jam obiisset. Et accersito centurione, interrogavit eum si jam mortuus esset.
Pilate was surprised to hear that Jesus was already dead, so he summoned the centurion to ask if this was so.
Et cum cognovisset a centurione, donavit corpus Joseph.
When Pilate had confirmed it with the centurion, he granted the body to Joseph.
Joseph autem mercatus sindonem, et deponens eum involvit sindone, et posuit eum in monumento quod erat excisum de petra, et advolvit lapidem ad ostium monumenti.
So Joseph bought a linen cloth, took down the body of Jesus, wrapped it in the cloth, and placed it in a tomb that had been cut out of the rock. Then he rolled a stone against the entrance to the tomb.
Maria autem Magdalene et Maria Joseph aspiciebant ubi poneretur.
Mary Magdalene and Mary the mother of Joseph (note: Or Joses) saw where His body was placed.
