Καὶ ἐπορεύθη Ἀβειμέλεχ υἱὸς Ἰεροβάαλ εἰς Συχὲμ πρὸς ἀδελφοὺς μητρὸς αὐτοῦ, καὶ ἐλάλησεν πρὸς αὐτοὺς καὶ πρὸς πᾶσαν συγγενίαν οἴκου πατρὸς μητρὸς αὐτοῦ λέγων
Now Abimelech son of Jerubbaal (note: Jerubbaal is another name for Gideon and probably means let Baal contend; here and throughout this chapter; see Judges 6:32.) went to his mother’s brothers at Shechem and said to them and to all the clan of his mother,
Λαλήσατε δὴ ἐν τοῖς ὠσὶν πόντων τῶν ἀνδρῶν Συχέμ Ττ τὸ ἀγαθὸν ὑμῖν, κυρεῦσαι ἑβδομήκοντα ἄνδρας, πάντας υἱοὺς Ἰεροβάαλ, ἢ κυριεύειν ὑμῶν ἄνδρα τε ὅτι ὀστοῦν ὑμῶν καὶ σὰρξ ὑμῶν εἰμι.
“Please ask all the leaders of Shechem, ‘Is it better for you that seventy men, all the sons of Jerubbaal, rule over you, or just one man?’ Remember that I am your own flesh and blood.”
καὶ ἐλάησαν μπερὶ αὐτοῦ οἱ ἀδελφοὶ τῆς μητρὸς αὐτοῦ ἐν τοῖς ὠσὶν πόντων τῶν ἀνδρῶν Συχὲμ πάντας τοὺς λόγους τούτους· καὶ ἔκανεν ἡ καρδία αὐτῶν ὀπίσω Ἀβειμέλεχ, ὅτι εἶπαν Ἀδελφὸς ἡμῶν ἐστιν, καὶ ἔδωκαν αὐτῶ ἑβδομήκοντα ἀργυρίου ἐξ οἴκου Βααλβερίθ·
And when his mother’s brothers spoke all these words about him in the presence of all the leaders of Shechem, their hearts were inclined to follow Abimelech, for they said, “He is our brother.”
καὶ ἐμισθώσατο ἑαυτῷ Ἀβειμἑλεχ ἄνδρας κενοὺς καὶ δειλούς, κα ἐπορεύθησαν ὀπίσω αὐτοῦ.
So they gave him seventy shekels of silver (note: 70 shekels is approximately 1.76 pounds or 797.8 grams of silver.) from the temple of Baal-berith, with which Abimelech hired some worthless and reckless men to follow him.
καὶ εἰσῆλθεν εἰς τὸν οἶκον τοῦ πατρός αὐτοῦ εἰς Ἐφράθα καὶ ἀπέκτεινεν τοὺς ἀδελφοὺς αὐτοῦ υἱοὺς Ἰεροβάαλ ἑβδομήκοντα ἄνδρας ἐπὶ λίθον ἕνα· καὶ κατελείφθη Ἰωαθὰν υἱὸς Ἰεροβάαλ ὁ νεώτερος, ὅτι ἐκρύβη.
He went to his father’s house in Ophrah, and on one stone murdered his seventy brothers, the sons of Jerubbaal. But Jotham, the youngest son of Jerubbaal, survived, because he hid himself.
Καὶ συνήχθησαν πάντες ἄνδρες Σικίμων καὶ πᾶς οἶκος Βηθμααλών, καὶ ἐπορεύθησαν καὶ ἐβασίλευσαν τὸν Ἀβειμέλεχ πρὸς τῇ βαλάνῳ τῇ εὑρετῇ τῆς στάσεως τῆς ἐν Σικίμοις.
Then all the leaders of Shechem and Beth-millo gathered beside the oak (note: Or terebinth or great tree) at the pillar in Shechem and proceeded to make Abimelech their king.
καὶ ἀνηγγέλη τῷ Ἰωαθάν· καὶ ἐπορεύθη καὶ ἔστη ἐπὶ κορυφὴν ὄρους Γαρειζείν, καὶ ἐπῆρεν τὴν φωνὴν αὐτοῦ κα ἔκλαυσεν, καὶ εἶπεν αὐτοῖς Ἀκούσατέ μου, ἄνδρες Σικίμων, καὶ ἀκούσεται ὑμῶν ὁ θεός.
When this was reported to Jotham, he climbed to the top of Mount Gerizim, raised his voice, and cried out: “Listen to me, O leaders of Shechem, and may God listen to you.
πορευόμενα ἐπορεύθη τὰ ξύλα τοῦ χρίσαι ἐφ’ ἑαυτὰ βασιλέα, καὶ εἶπον τῆ ἐλαίᾳ βασίλευσον ἐφ’ ἡμῶν.
One day the trees set out to anoint a king for themselves. They said to the olive tree, ‘Reign over us.’
καὶ εἶπεν αὐτοῖς ἢ ἐλαία Μὴ ἀπολείψασα τὴν πιότητά μου, ἐν ᾗ δοξάσουσι τὸν θεὸν ἄνδρες, πορεύσομαι κινεῖσθαι ἐπὶ τῶν ξύλων;
But the olive tree replied, ‘Should I stop giving my oil that honors both God and man, to hold sway over the trees?’
καὶ εἶπον τὰ ξύλα τῇ συκῇ Δεῦρο βασίλευσον ἐφ’ ἡμῶν.
Then the trees said to the fig tree, ‘Come and reign over us.’
καὶ εἶπεν αὐτοῖς ἡ συκῆ Μὴ ἀπολείψασα ἐγὼ τὴν γλυκύτητά μου κα τὰ γενήματά μου τὰ ἀγαθὰ πορεύσομαι κινεῖσθαι ἐπὶ τῶν ξύλων;
But the fig tree replied, ‘Should I stop giving my sweetness and my good fruit, to hold sway over the trees?’
καὶ εἶπαν τὰ ξύλ‘α πρὸς τὴν ἄμπελον Δεῦρο σὺ βασίλευσον ἐφ’ ἡμῶν.
Then the trees said to the grapevine, ‘Come and reign over us.’
καὶ εἶπεν αὐτὸς ἡ ἄμπελος Μὴ ἀπολείψασα τὸν οἶνόν μου τὸν εὐφραίνοντα θεὸν καὶ ἀνθρώπους πορεύσομαι κινεῖσθαι ἐπὶ τῶν ξύλων;
But the grapevine replied, ‘Should I stop giving my wine that cheers both God and man, to hold sway over the trees?’
καὶ εἶπαν πάντα τὰ ξύλα τῇ ῥάμνῳ Δεῦρο σὺ βασίλευσον ἐφ' ἡμῶν.
Finally all the trees said to the thornbush, ‘Come and reign over us.’
καὶ εἶπεν ἡ ῥάμνος πρὸς τὰ ξύλα Εἰ ἐν ἀληθείᾳ χρίετέ με ὑμεῖς τοῦ βασιλεύειν ἐφ’ ὑμᾶς, δεῦτε ὑπόστητε ἐν τῇ σκιᾷ μου· καὶ εἰ μή, ἐξέλθῃ πῦρ ἀπ’ ἐμοῦ καὶ καταφάγῃ τὰς κέδρους τοῦ Λιβάνου.
But the thornbush replied, ‘If you really are anointing me as king over you, come and find refuge in my shade. But if not, may fire come out of the thornbush and consume the cedars of Lebanon.’
καὶ νῦν εἰ ἐν ἀληθείᾳ καὶ τελειότητι ἐποιήσατε καὶ ἐβασιλεύσατε τὸν Ἀβειμέλεχ, καὶ εἰ ἀγαθωσύνην ἐποιήσατε μετὰ Ἰεροβάαλ καὶ μετά τοῦ οἴκου αὐτοῦ, καὶ εἰ ὡς ἀνταπόδοσις χειρὸς αὐτοῦ ἐποιήσατε αὐτῶ·
Now if you have acted faithfully and honestly in making Abimelech king, if you have done well by Jerubbaal and his family, and if you have done to him as he deserves—
ὡς παρετάξατο ὁ πατήρ μου ὑπὲρ τὴν ψυχὴν αὐτοῦ ἐξ ἐναντίας καὶ ἐρύσατο ὑμᾶς ἐκ χειρὸς Μαδιάμ,
for my father fought for you and risked his life to deliver you from the hand of Midian,
καὶ ὑμεῖς ἐπανέστητε ἐπὶ τὸν οἶκον τοῦ πατρός μου σήμερον καὶ ἀπεκτείνατε τοὺς υἱοὺς αὐτοῦ ἑβδομήκοντα ἄνδρας ἐπὶ λίθον ἕνα, καὶ ἐβασιλεύσατε τὸν Ἀβειμέλεχ υἱὸν παιδίσκης αὐτοῦ ἐπὶ τοὺς ἄνδρας Σικίμων, ὅτι ἀδελφὸς ὑμῶν ἐστιν·
but you have risen up against my father’s house this day and killed his seventy sons on a single stone, and you have made Abimelech, the son of his maidservant, king over the leaders of Shechem because he is your brother—
καὶ εἰ ἐν ἀληθείᾳ καὶ τελειότητι ἐποιήσατε μετὰ Ἰεροβάαλ καὶ μετὰ τοῦ οἴκου αὐτοῦ ἐν τῇ ἡμέρᾳ ταύτῃ, εὐφρανθείητε ἐν Ἀβειμέλεχ, καὶ εὐφρανθείη καί γε αὐτὸς ἐφ’ ὑμῖν.
if you have acted faithfully and honestly toward Jerubbaal and his house this day, then may you rejoice in Abimelech, and he in you.
εἰ δὲ οὐ, ἐξέλθοι πῦρ ἀπὸ Ἀβειμέλεχ καὶ φάγοι τοὺς ἄνδρας ῥᾶς Σικίμων καὶ τὸν οἶκον Βηθημααλλών, καὶ ἐξέλθοι πῦρ ἀπὸ ἀνδρῶν Σικίμων καὶ ἐκ τοῦ οἴκου Βηθμααλλὼν καὶ καταφάγοι τὸν Ἀβειμέλεχ.
But if not, may fire come from Abimelech and consume the leaders of Shechem and Beth-millo, and may fire come from the leaders of Shechem and Beth-millo and consume Abimelech.”
καὶ ἔφυγεν Ἰωαθὰν καὶ ἀπέδρα, καὶ ἐπορεύθη ἕως Βαιὴρ καὶ ᾤκησεν ἐκεῖ προσώπου Ἀβειμέλεχ ἀδελφοῦ αὐτοῦ.
Then Jotham ran away, escaping to Beer, and he lived there for fear of his brother Abimelech.
Καὶ ἦρξεν Ἀβειμἑλεχ ἐπὶ Ἰσραὴλ τρία ἔτη.
After Abimelech had reigned over Israel for three years,
καὶ ἐξαπέστειλεν ὁ θεὸς πνεῦμα πονηρὸν ἀνὰ μέσον καὶ ἀνὰ μέσον τῶν ἀνδρῶν Σικίμων, καὶ ἠθέτησαν ἄΙδρ ἐν τῷ οἴκῳ Ἀβειμέλεχ·
God sent a spirit of animosity (note: Or a harmful spirit) between Abimelech and the leaders of Shechem and caused them to treat Abimelech deceitfully,
τοῦ ἐπαγαγεῖν τὴν ἀδικίαν τῶν ἑ Ἰεροβάαλ καὶ τὰ αἵματα αὐτῶν, τοῦ θεῖναι ἐπὶ ᾿ ἀδελφὸν αὐτῶν ὃς ἀπέκτεινεν αὐτούς, καὶ ἐπὶ ἄνδρας Σικίμων, ὅτι ἐνίσχυσαν τὰς χεῖρας αὐτοῦ ἀποκτεῖναι τοὺς ἀδελφούς.
in order that the crime against the seventy sons of Jerubbaal might come to justice and their blood be avenged on their brother Abimelech and on the leaders of Shechem, who had helped him murder his brothers.
καὶ ἔθηκαν αὐτῷ οἱ ἄνδρες Σικίμων ἐνεδρεύοντας ἐπὶ τὰς κεφαλὰς τῶν ὀρέων, διήρπαζον πάντα ὃς παρεπορεύετο ἐπ’ αὐτοὺς ἐν τῇ ὁδῷ· καὶ ἀπηγγέλη τῷ βασιλεῖ Ἀβειμέλεχ.
The leaders of Shechem set up an ambush against Abimelech on the hilltops, and they robbed all who passed by them on the road. So this was reported to Abimelech.
καὶ ἦλθεν Γάλααδ υἱὸς Ἰώβηλ καὶ οἱ ἀδελφοὶ αὐτοῦ καὶ παρῆλθον ἐν Σικίμοις, καὶ ἤλπισαν ἐν αὐτῷ οἱ ἄνδρες Σικίμων.
Meanwhile, Gaal son of Ebed came with his brothers and crossed into Shechem, and the leaders of Shechem put their confidence in him.
καὶ ἐξῆλθον εἰς ἀγρὸν κα ἐτρύγησαν τοὺς ἀμπελῶνας αὐτῶν καὶ ἐπάτησαν, καὶ ἐποίησαν ἐλλουλείμ, κα εἰς οἶκον θεοῦ αὐτῶν καὶ ἔφαγον καὶ εἶπον καὶ κατηράσαντο τὸν Ἀβειμέλεχ.
And after they had gone out into the fields, gathered grapes from their vineyards, and trodden them, they held a festival and went into the house of their god; and as they ate and drank, they cursed Abimelech.
καὶ εἶπεν Γάαδ υἱὸς Ἰώβηλ Τίς έστιν Αβειμελεχ καὶ τίς ἐστιν υἱὸς Συχὲμ ὅτι δουλεύσομεν αὐτῷ; οὐχ υἱὸς καὶ Ζεβούλ, ἐπίσκοπος αὐτοῦ, δοῦλος αὐτοῦ σὺν τοῖς ἀνδράσιν Ἑμμὼρ πατρὸς Συχέμ; κα τί ὅτι δουλεύσομεν αὐτῷ ἡμεῖς;
Then Gaal son of Ebed said, “Who is Abimelech, and who is Shechem, that we should serve him? Is he not the son of Jerubbaal, and is not Zebul his officer? You are to serve the men of Hamor, the father of Shechem. Why should we serve Abimelech?
καὶ τίς δώῃ τὸν λαὸν τοῦτον ἐν χειρί μου; καὶ μεταστήσω ’τον Ἀβειμέλεχ καὶ ἔρω πρὸς αὐτόν Πηλήθυνον τὴν δύναμίν σου καὶ ἔξελθε.
If only this people were under my authority, I would remove Abimelech; I would say to him, ‘Muster your army and come out (note: LXX; Hebrew I would remove Abimelech.” And he said to him, “Muster your army and come out!”)!’”
καὶ ἤκουσεν Ζεβοὺλ ἄρχων τῆς πόλεως τοὺς λόγους Γάλααδ υἱοῦ Ἰώβηλ, καὶ ὠργίσθη θυμῷ αὐτός.
When Zebul the governor of the city heard the words of Gaal son of Ebed, he burned with anger.
καὶ ἀπέστειλεν ἀγγέλους πρὸς Ἂβειμέλεχ ἐν κρυφῇ λέγων Ἴδου Γάλααδ υἱὸς Ἰώβηλ καὶ οἱ ἀδελφοὶ αὐτοῦ ἔρχονται εἰς Συχέμ, καὶ ἰδοὺ αὐτοὶ περικάθηνται τὴν πόλιν ἐπὶ σέ.
So he covertly sent messengers to Abimelech (note: Or he sent messengers to Abimelech in Arumah; see verse 41.) to say, “Look, Gaal son of Ebed and his brothers have come to Shechem and are stirring up (note: Or besieging or closing up) the city against you.
καὶ νῦν ἀναστὰς νυκτὸς νυκτὸς σὺ καὶ ὁ λαὸς ὁ μετὰ σοῦ, καὶ ἐνέδρευσον ἐν τῷ ἀγρῷ.
Now then, tonight you and the people with you are to come and lie in wait in the fields.
καὶ ἱστᾶι τὸ πρωὶ ὁμὰ τῷ ἀνατεῖλαι τὸν ἥλιον ὀρθριεῖς καὶ ἐκτενεῖς ἐπὶ τὴν πόλιν, καὶ ἰδοὺ αὐτὸς καὶ ὁ λαὸς ὁ μετ’ αὐτοῦ ἐκπορεύονται πρὸς σέ, καὶ ποιήσεις αὐτῷ ὅσα ἀν’ εὕρῃ ἡ χείρ σου·
And in the morning at sunrise, get up and advance against the city. When Gaal and his men come out against you, do to them whatever you are able.”
καὶ ἀνέστη Ἀβειμέλεχ καὶ πᾶς ὁ λαὸς μετ’ αὐτοῦ νυκτός, καὶ τέτρασιν ἀρχαῖς.
So Abimelech and all his troops set out by night and lay in wait against Shechem in four companies.
καὶ ἐξῆλθεν Γάλααδ υἱὸς Ἰώβηλ καὶ ἔστη πρὸς τῇ θύρᾳ τῆς πύλης τῆς πόλεως, καὶ ἀνέστη Ἀβειμέλεχ καὶ ὁ λαὸς ὁ μετ’ αὐτοῦ ἀπὸ τοῦ ἐνέδρου.
Now Gaal son of Ebed went out and stood at the entrance of the city gate just as Abimelech and his men came out from their hiding places.
καὶ εἶδεν Γάλααδ υἱὸς Ἰώβηλ τὸν λαόν, καὶ εἶπεν πρὸς Ζεβούλ ἰδοὺ λαὸς καταβαίνει ἀπὸ κεφαλῶν τῶν ὀρέων· καὶ εἶπεν πρὸς αὐτὸν Ζεβούλ τὴν σκιὰν τῶν ὀρέων σὺ βλέπεις ὡς ἄνδρας.
When Gaal saw the people, he said to Zebul, “Look, people are coming down from the mountains!” But Zebul replied, “The shadows of the mountains look like men to you.”
καὶ προσέθετο ἔτι Γάλααδ τοῦ λαλῆσαι καὶ εἶπεν Ἴδου λαὸς καταβαίνων κατὰ θάλασσαν ἀπὸ τοῦ ἐχόμενα ὀμφαλοῦ τῆς γῆς, καὶ ἀρχὴ ἑτέρα ἔρχεται διὰ ὁδοῦ Ἠλωνμαωνεμείν.
Then Gaal spoke up again, “Look, people are coming down from the center of the land (note: Literally the navel of the earth), and one company is coming by way of the Diviners’ Oak (note: Or the Diviners’ Terebinth or the diviners’ tree).”
καὶ εἶπεν πρὸς αὐτὸν Ζεβούλ Ταὶ ποῦ ἐστιν τὸ στόμα σου ὡς ἐλάλησας τίς ἐστιν Ἀβειμέλεχ ὅτι δουλεύσομεν αὐτῷ; μὴ οὐχὶ οὗτος ὁ λαὸς ὃν ἐξουδένωσας; ἔξελθε δὴ νῦν καὶ παράταξαι αὐτῷ.
“Where is your gloating now?” Zebul replied. “You said, ‘Who is Abimelech that we should serve him?’ Are these not the people you ridiculed? Go out now and fight them!”
καὶ ἐξῆλθεν Γάλααδ ἐνώπιον ἀνδρῶν Συχὲμ καὶ παρέταξατο πρὸς Ἀβειμέλεχ.
So Gaal went out before the leaders of Shechem and fought against Abimelech,
καὶ ἐδίωξεν αὐτὸν Ἀβειμέλεχ καὶ ἔφυγεν ἀπὸ αὐτοῦ, καὶ ἔπεσαν τραυματίαι πολλοὶ ἕως τῆς θύρας τῆς πύλης.
but Abimelech pursued him, and Gaal fled before him. And many Shechemites fell wounded all the way to the entrance of the gate.
καὶ εἰσῆλθεν Ἀβειμέλεχ ἐν Ἀρημά· καὶ ἐξέβαλεν Ζεβοὺλ τὸν Γάλααδ καὶ τοὺς ἀδελφοὺς αὐτοῦ μὴ οἰκεῖν ἐν Συχέμ.
Abimelech stayed in Arumah, and Zebul drove Gaal and his brothers out of Shechem.
καὶ ἐγένετο τῇ ἐπαύριον καὶ ἐξῆλθεν ὁ λαὸς εἰς ἀγρὸν καὶ ἀνήγγειλεν τῷ Ἀβειμέλεχ.
The next day the people of Shechem went out into the fields, and this was reported to Abimelech.
καὶ ἔλαβεν τὸν λαὸν καὶ διεῖλεν αὐτοὺς εἰς τρεῖς ἀρχάς, καὶ ἐνήδρευσεν ἐν ἀγρῷ καὶ εἶδεν καὶ ἰδοὺ ὁ λαὸς ἐξῆλθεν ἐκ τῆς πόλεως, καὶ ἀνέστη ἐπ’ αὐτοὺς καὶ ἐπάταξεν αὐτούς.
So he took his men, divided them into three companies, and lay in wait in the fields. When he saw the people coming out of the city, he rose up against them and attacked them.
κοὶ Ἀβειμέλεχ καὶ οἱ ἀρχηγοὶ οἱ μετ’ αὐτοῦ ἐξέτειναν καὶ ἔστησαν παρὰ τὴν θύραν τῆς πύλης τῆς πόλεως, καὶ αἱ δύο ἀρχαὶ ἐξέτειναν ἐπὶ πάντας τοὺς ἐν τῷ ἀγρῷ καὶ ἐπάταξαν αὐτούς.
Then Abimelech and the companies with him rushed forward and took their stand at the entrance of the city gate. The other two companies rushed against all who were in the fields and struck them down.
καὶ Ἀβειμέλεχ παρετάσσετο ἐν τῇ πόλει ὅλην τὴν ἡμέραν ἐκείνην, καὶ κατελάβετο τὴν πόλιν καὶ τὸν λαὸν τὸν ἐν αὐτῇ ἀπέκτεινεν, καὶ καθεῖλεν τὴν πόλιν καὶ ἔσπειρεν εἰς ἅλας.
And all that day Abimelech fought against the city until he had captured it and killed its people. Then he demolished the city and sowed it with salt.
καὶ ἤκουσαν πάντες οἱ ἄνδρες πύργων Συχέμ, καὶ ἦλθον εἰς συνέλευσιν Βαιθηρβερίθ.
On hearing of this, all the leaders in the tower of Shechem entered the inner chamber of the temple of El-berith (note: El-berith was another name for Baal-berith; see verse 4.).
καὶ ἀνηγγέλη τῷ Ἀβειμέλεχ ὅτι συνήχθησαν πάντες οἱ ἄνδρες πύργων Συχέμ.
And when Abimelech was told that all the leaders in the tower of Shechem were gathered there,
καὶ ἀνέβη Ἀβειμέλεχ εἰς ὄρος Ἕρμων, καὶ πᾶς ὁ λαὸς ὁ μετ᾿ αὐτοῦ. καὶ ἔλαβεν Αβειμελεχ τὰς ἀξίνας ἐν τῇ χειρὶ αὐτοῦ, καὶ ἔκοψεν κλάδον ξύλου καὶ ἦρεν καὶ ἔθηκεν ἐπ’ ὤμων αὐτοῦ, καἰ εἶπεν τῷ λαῷ τῷ μετ’ αὐτοῦ Ὃ εἴδετέ με ποιοῦντα, ταχέως ποιήσατε ὡς ἐγώ.
he and all his men went up to Mount Zalmon. Abimelech took his axe in his hand and cut a branch from the trees, which he lifted to his shoulder, saying to his men, “Hurry and do what you have seen me do.”
καὶ ἔκοψαν καί γε ἀνὴρ κλάδον πᾶς ἀνὴρ καὶ ἐπορεύθησαν ὀπίσω Ἀβειμέλεχ, καὶ ἐπέθηκαν ἐπὶ τὴν συνέλευσιν, καὶ ἐνεπύρισαν ἐπ’ αὐτοὺς τὴν συνέλευσιν ἐν πυρί· καὶ ἀπέθανον καί γε πάντες οἱ ἄνδρες πύργου Σικίμων ὡς χίλιοι ἄνδρες καὶ γυναῖκες.
So each man also cut his own branch and followed Abimelech. Then they piled the branches against the inner chamber and set it on fire above them, killing everyone in the tower of Shechem, about a thousand men and women.
καὶ ἐπορεύθη Ἀβειμέλεχ ἐκ Βαιθηρβερὶθ καὶ παρενέβαλεν ἐν Θήβης, καὶ κατέλαβεν αὐτήν.
Then Abimelech went to Thebez, encamped against it, and captured it.
κα πύργος ἰσχυρὸς ἦν ἐν μέσῳ τῆς πόλεως, καὶ ἔφυγον ἐκεῖ πάντες οἱ ἄνδρες καὶ αἱ τῆς πόλεως, καὶ ἔκλεισαν ἔξωθεν αὐτῶν κοὶ ἀνέβησαν ἐπὶ τὸ τοῦ πύργου.
But there was a strong tower inside the city, and all the men, women, and leaders of the city fled there. They locked themselves in and went up to the roof of the tower.
καὶ ἦλθεν Ἀβειμέλεχ ἕως τοῦ πύργου, καὶ παρετάξαντο αὐτῷ. καὶ ἤγγισεν Ἀβειμέλεχ ἕως τῆς θύρας τοῦ πύργου τοῦ αὐτὸν ἐν πυρί.
When Abimelech came to attack the tower, he approached its entrance to set it on fire.
καὶ ἔρριψεν γυνὴ μία κλάσμα ἐπιμυλίου καὶ ἔκλασεν τὸ κρανίον αὐτοῦ.
But a woman dropped an upper millstone on Abimelech’s head, crushing his skull.
καὶ πρὸς τὸ παιδάριον τὸ αἶρον τὰ σκεύη αὐτοῦ καὶ εἴπεν ῥομφαίαν μου καὶ θανάτωσόν με, μή ποτε εἴπωσιν αὐτόν. καὶ ἐξεκέντησεν αὐτὸν τὸ παιδάριον αὐτοῦ, καὶ ἀπέθανεν.
He quickly called his armor-bearer, saying, “Draw your sword and kill me, lest they say of me, ‘A woman killed him.’” So Abimelech’s armor-bearer ran his sword through him, and he died.
καὶ εἶδεν ἀνὴρ Ἰσραὴλ ὅτι ἀπέθανεν Ἀβειμἑλεχ· καὶ ἐπορεύθησαν ἀνὴρ εἰς τὸν τόπον αὐτοῦ.
And when the Israelites saw that Abimelech was dead, they all went home.
κα ἐπέστρεψεν ὁ εὸς τὴν πονηρίαν Ἀβειμέλεχ, ἣν ἐποίησεν τῷ πατρὶ αὐτοῦ ἀποκτεῖναι τοὺς ἑβδομήκοντα ἀδελφοὺς αὐτοῦ.
In this way God repaid the wickedness that Abimelech had done to his father in murdering his seventy brothers.
καὶ τὴν πᾶσαν πονηρίαν ἀνδρῶν Συχὲμ ἐπέστρεψεν ὁ θεὸς εἰς κεφάλὴν αὐτῶν· καὶ ἐπῆλθεν ἐπ’ αὐτοὺς ἡ κατάρα Ἰωαθὰν υἱοῦ Ἰεροβάαλ.
And God also brought all the wickedness of the men of Shechem back upon their own heads. So the curse of Jotham son of Jerubbaal came upon them.
