ἦσαν Δεββωρὰ καὶ Βαρὰκ υἱὸς Ἀβεινέεμ ἐν τῇ ἡμέρᾳ ἐκείνῃ λέγοντες
On that day Deborah and Barak son of Abinoam sang this song:
Ἀπεκαλύφθη ἀποκάλυμμα ἐν Ἰσραήλ· ἐν τῷ ἀκουσιασθῆναι λαὸν εὐλογεῖτε Κύριον.
“When the princes take the lead in Israel, when the people volunteer, bless the LORD.
ἀκούσατε βασιλεῖς, καὶ ἐνωτίσασθε σατράπαι· ἐγώ εἰμι τῷ κυρίῳ, ἐγώ εἰμι ᾄσομαι, ψαλῶ τῷ κυρίῳ τῷ θεῷ Ἰσραήλ.
Listen, O kings! Give ear, O princes! I will sing to the LORD; I will sing praise to the LORD, the God of Israel.
Κύριε, ἑν τῇ ἐξόδῳ σου ἐν Σηείρ, ἑν τῷ ἀπαίρειν σε ἐξ ἀγροῦ Ἐδώμ, γῆ ἐσείσθη καὶ ὁ οὐρανὸς ἔσταξεν δρόσους, καὶ αἱ νεφέλαι ἔσταξαν ὕδωρ.
O LORD, when You went out from Seir, when You marched from the land of Edom, the earth trembled, the heavens poured out rain, and the clouds poured down water.
ὄρη ἐσαλεύθησαν ἀπὸ προσώπου Κυρίου Ἐλωεί, τοῦτο Σεινὰ ἀπὸ προσώπου κυρίου θεοῦ Ἰσραήλ.
The mountains quaked before the LORD, the One of Sinai, before the LORD, the God of Israel.
ἐν ἡμέραις σαμεγὰρ υἱοῦ Ἀνάθ, ἐν ἡμέραις Ἰαήλ, ἐξέλιπον ὁδοὺς καὶ ἐπορεύθησαν ἀτραπούς, ἐπορεύθησαν ὁδοὺς διεστραμμένας.
In the days of Shamgar son of Anath, in the days of Jael, the highways were deserted and the travelers took the byways.
ἐξέλιπον δυνατοὶ ἐν Ἰσραήλ, ἐξέλιπον, ἕως οὗ ἀναστῇ Δεββωρά, ἕως οὗ ἀναστῇ μήτηρ ἐν Ἰσραήλ.
Life in the villages ceased; it ended in Israel, until I, Deborah, arose, a mother in Israel.
έξελέξαντο θεοὺς καινούς, ὅτε ἐπολέμησαν πόλεις ἀρχόντων· θυρεὸς ἐὰν ὀφθῇ καὶ λόγχη ἐν τεσσεράκοντα χιλιάσιν ἐν Ἰσραήλ.
When they chose new gods, then war came to their gates. Not a shield or spear was found among forty thousand in Israel.
ἡ καρδία μου εἰς τὰ διατεταγμένα τῷ Ἰσραήλ· οἱ ἑκουσιαζόμενοι ἐν λαῷ, εὐλογεῖτε Κύριον.
My heart is with the princes of Israel, with the volunteers among the people. Bless the LORD!
ἐπιβεβηκότες ἐπὶ ὄνου θηλείας μεσημβρίας, καθήμενοι ἐπὶ κριτηρίου καὶ πορευόμενοι ἐπὶ ὁδοὺς συνέδρων ἐφ᾿ ὁδῷ·
You who ride white donkeys, who sit on saddle blankets, and you who travel the road, ponder
διηγεῖσθε ἀπὸ φωνῆς ἀνακρουομένων, ἀνὰ μέσον ὑδρευομένων· ἐκεῖ δώσουσιν δικαιοσύνας. Κύριε, δικαιοσύνας αὔξησον ἐν Ἰσραήλ· τότε κατέβη εἰς τὰς πόλεις λαὸς κυρίου.
the voices of the singers (note: Or archers or those who divide the sheep) at the watering places. There they shall recount the righteous acts of the LORD, the righteous deeds of His villagers (note: Or warriors) in Israel. Then the people of the LORD went down to the gates:
ἐξεγείρου ἐξεγείρου, Δεββωρά, ἐξεγείρου ἐξεγείρου, λάλησον ᾠδήν· ἀνάστα, Βαράκ, καὶ αἰχμαλώτισον αἰχμαλωσίαν σου, υἱὸς Ἀβεινένμ.
‘Awake, awake, O Deborah! Awake, awake, sing a song! Arise, O Barak, and take hold of your captives, O son of Abinoam!’
τότε κατέβη κατάλημμα τοῖς ἰσχυροῖς· λαὸς κυρίου κατέβη αὐτῷ ἐν τοῖς κραταιοῖς ἐξ ἑμοῦ.
Then the survivors came down to the nobles; the people of the LORD came down to me against the mighty.
Ἐφράιμ ἐξερίζωσεν αὐτοὺς ἐν τῷ Ἀμαλήκ· ὀπίσω σου, Βενιαμείν, ἐν τοῖς λαοῖς σου· ἐν ἐμοὶ Μαχεὶρ κατέβησαν ἐξερευνῶντες, καὶ ἀπὸ Ζαβουλὼν ἕλκοντες ἐν ῥάβδῳ διηγήσεως γραμματέως.
Some came from Ephraim, with their roots in Amalek; Benjamin came with your people after you. The commanders came down from Machir, the bearers of the marshal’s staff from Zebulun.
καὶ ἀρχηγοὶ ἐν Ἰσσαχὰρ μετὰ Δεββώρας καὶ Βαράκ. οὕτως Βαρὰκ ἐν κοιλάσιν ἀπέστειλεν ἐν ποσὶν αὐτοῦ· εἰς τὰς μερίδας Ῥουβὴν μεγάλοι ἐξικνούμενοι καρδίαν.
The princes of Issachar were with Deborah, and Issachar was with Barak, rushing into the valley at his heels. In the clans of Reuben there was great indecision.
εἰς τί ἐκάθισαν ἀνὰ μέσον τῆς διγομίας τοῦ ἀκοῦσαι συρισμοῦ ἀγγέλων; εἰς διαιρέσεις Ῥουβὴν μεγάλοι ἐξετασμοὶ καρδίας.
Why did you sit among the sheepfolds to hear the whistling for the flocks? In the clans of Reuben there was great indecision.
Γαλαὰδ ἐν τῷ πέραν τοῦ Ἰορδάνου ἐσκήνωσεν· καὶ Δὰν εἰς τί παροικεῖ πλοίοις ; Ἀσὴρ ἐκάθισεν παραλίαν θαλασσῶν, καὶ ἐπὶ διεξοδοις αὐτοῦ σκηνώσει.
Gilead remained beyond the Jordan. Dan, why did you linger by the ships? Asher stayed at the coast and remained in his harbors.
Ζαβουλὼν λαὸς ὠνείδισεν ὠνείδισεν ψυχὴν αὐτοῦ εἰς θάνατον, καὶ νεφθαλεὶ ἐπὶ ὕψη ἀγροῦ.
Zebulun was a people who risked their lives; Naphtali, too, on the heights of the battlefield.
ἦλθον αὐτῶν βασιλεῖς, παρετάξαντο· τότε ἐπολέμησαν βασιλεῖς Χανάαν, ἐν Θαναὰχ ἐπὶ ὕδατι Μεγεδδώ· δῶρον ἀργυρίου οὐκ ἔλαβον.
Kings came and fought; then the kings of Canaan fought at Taanach by the waters of Megiddo, but they took no plunder of silver.
ἐξ οὐρανοῦ παρετάξαντο οἱ ἀστέρες, ἐκ τρίβων αὐτῶν παρετάξαντο μετὰ Σεισαρά.
From the heavens the stars fought; from their courses they fought against Sisera.
χειμάρρους Κεισὼν ἐξέσυρεν αὐτούς, χειμάρρους ἀρχαίων, χειμάρρους Κεισών· καταπατήσει αὐτὸν ψυχή μου δυνατή.
The River Kishon swept them away, the ancient river, the River Kishon. March on, O my soul, in strength!
τότε ἐνεποδίσθησαν πτέρναι ἵππου, σπουδῇ ἔσπευσαν ἰσχυροὶ αὐτοῦ.
Then the hooves of horses thundered—the mad galloping of his stallions.
Καταρᾶσθε Μηρώζ, εἶπεν ἄγγελος κυρίου, καταρᾶσθε· ἐπικατάρατος πᾶς ὁ κατοικῶν αὐτήν· ὅτι οὐκ ἤλθοσαν εἰς βοήθειαν Κύρου, εἰς βοήθειαν ἐν δυνατοῖς.
‘Curse Meroz,’ says the angel of the LORD. ‘Bitterly curse her inhabitants; for they did not come to help the LORD, to help the LORD against the mighty.’
εὐλογηθείη ἐν γυναιξὶν Ἰαήλ, γυνὴ Χάβερ τοῦ Κειναίου· ἀπὸ γυναικῶν ἐν σκηναῖς εὐλογηθείη.
Most blessed among women is Jael, the wife of Heber the Kenite, most blessed of tent-dwelling women.
ὕδωρ ᾔτησεν, γάλα ἔδωκεν, ἐν λεκάνῃ ὑπερεχόντων προσήνεγκεν βούτυρον.
He asked for water, and she gave him milk. In a magnificent bowl she brought him curds.
χεῖρα αὐτῆς ἀριστερὰν εἰς πάσσαλον ἐξέτεινεν καὶ δεξιὰν αὐτῆς εἰς σφῦραν κοπιώντων, καὶ ἐσφυροκόπησεν Σεισαρά, διήλωσεν κεφαλὴν αὐτοῦ καὶ ἐπάταξεν, διήλωσεν κρόταφον αὐτοῦ.
She reached for the tent peg, her right hand for the workman’s hammer. She struck Sisera and crushed his skull; she shattered and pierced his temple.
ἀνὰ μέσον τῶν ποδῶν αὐτῆς κατεκυλίσθη, ἔπεσεν καὶ ἐκοιμήθη ἀνὰ μέσον τῶν ποδῶν αὐτῆς· κατακλιθεὶς ἔπεσεν· καθὼς κατεκλίθη, ἐκεῖ ἔπεσεν ἐξοδευθείς.
At her feet he collapsed, he fell, there he lay still; at her feet he collapsed, he fell; where he collapsed, there he fell dead.
διὰ τῆς θυρίδος παρέκυψεν μήτηρ Σεισαρὰ ἐκτὸς τοῦ τοξικοῦ Διότι ᾐσχύνθη ἅρμα αὐτοῦ; διότι ἐχρόνισαν πόδες ἁρμάτων αὐτοῦ;
Sisera’s mother looked through the window; she peered through the lattice and lamented: ‘Why is his chariot so long in coming? What has delayed the clatter of his chariots?’
αἱ σοφαὶ ἄρχουσαι αὐτῆς ἀπεκρίθησαν πρὸς αὐτήν, καὶ αὐτὴ ἀπέστρεψεν λόγους αὐτῆς ἑαυτῇ·
Her wisest ladies answer; indeed she keeps telling herself,
Οὐχ εὑρήσουσιν αὐτὸν διαμερίζοντα σκῦλα; οἰκτείρμων οἰκτειρήσει εἰς κεφαλὴν ἀνδρός· σκῦλα βαμμάτων τῷ Σεισαρά, σκῦλα βαμμάτων ποικιλίας, βάμματα ποικιλτῶν αὐτά, τῷ τραχήλῳ αὐτοῦ σκῦλα.
‘Are they not finding and dividing the spoil—a girl or two for each warrior, a plunder of dyed garments for Sisera, the spoil of embroidered garments for the neck of the looter?’
οὕτως ἀπόλοιντο πάντες οἱ ἐχθροί σου, Κύριε· καὶ οἱ ἀγαπῶντες αὐτὸν ὡς ἔξοδος ἡλίου ἐν δυνάμει αὐτοῦ. Καὶ ἡσύχασεν ἡ γῆ τεσσεράκοντα ἔτη.
So may all Your enemies perish, O LORD! But may those who love You shine like the sun at its brightest.” And the land had rest for forty years.
