Σαλπίσατε σάλπιγγι ἐν Σειών, κηρύξατε ἐν ὄρει ἁγίῳ μου, καὶ συγχυθήτωσαν πάντες οἱ κατοικοῦντες τὴν γῆν, διότι πάρεστιν ἡμέρα Κυρίου, ὅτι ἐγγύς·
Blow the ram’s horn in Zion; sound the alarm on My holy mountain! Let all who dwell in the land tremble, for the Day of the LORD is coming; indeed, it is near—
ἡμέρα σκότους καὶ γνόφου, ἡμέρα νεφέλης καὶ ὁμίχλης. ὡς ὄρθρος χυθήσεται ἐπὶ τὰ ὄρη λαὸς πολὺς καὶ ἰσχυρός· ὅμοιος αὐτῷ οὐ γέγονεν ἀπὸ τοῦ αἰῶνος, καὶ μετʼ αὐτὸν οὐ προστεθήσεται ἕως ἐτῶν εἰς γενεὰς γενεῶν.
a day of darkness and gloom, a day of clouds and blackness. Like the dawn overspreading the mountains a great and strong army appears, such as never was of old, nor will ever be in ages to come.
τὰ ἔμπροσθεν αὐτοῦ πῦρ ἀναλίσκον, καὶ τὰ ὀπίσω αὐτοῦ ἀναπτομένη φλόξ· ὡς παράδεισος τρυφῆς ἡ γῆ πρὸ προσώπου αὐτοῦ, καὶ τὰ ὄπισθεν αὐτοῦ πεδίον αφανισμοῦ, καὶ ἀνασωζόμενος οὐκ ἔσται αὐτῷ.
Before them a fire devours, and behind them a flame scorches. The land before them is like the Garden of Eden, but behind them, it is like a desert wasteland—surely nothing will escape them.
ὁὡς ὅρασις ἵππων ἡ ὅρασις αὐτῶν, καὶ ὡς ἱππεῖς οὕτως καταδιώξονται·
Their appearance is like that of horses, and they gallop like swift steeds.
ὡς φωνὴ ἁρμάτων ἐπὶ τὰς κορυφὰς τῶν ὀρέων ἐξαλοῦνται, καὶ ὡς φωνὴ φλογὸς πυρὸς κατεσθιούσης καλάμην, καὶ ὡς λαὸς πολὺς καὶ ἰσχυρὸς παρατασσόμενος εἰς πόλεμον.
With a sound like that of chariots they bound over the mountaintops, like the crackling of fire consuming stubble, like a mighty army deployed for battle.
ἀπὸ προσώπου αὐτοῦ συντριβήσονται λαοί, πᾶν πρόσαωπον ὡς πρόσκαυμα χύτρας.
Nations writhe in horror before them; every face turns pale.
ὼς μαχηταὶ δραμοῦνται, καὶ ὡς ἄνδρες πολεμισταὶ ἀναβήσονται ἐπὶ τὰ τείχη. καὶ ἕκαστος ἐν τῇ ὁδῷ αὐτοῦ πορεύσεται, καὶ οὐ μὴ ἐκκλίνωσιν τὰς τρίβους αὐτῶν,
They charge like mighty men; they scale the walls like men of war. Each one marches in formation, not swerving from the course.
καὶ ἕκαστος ἀπὸ τοῦ ἀδελφοῦ αὐτοῦ οὐκ ἀφέξεται· καταβαρυνόμενοι ἐν τοῖς ὅπλοις αὐτῶν πορεύσονται, καὶ ἐν τοῖς βέλεσιν αὐτῶν πεσοῦνται, καὶ οὐ μὴ συντελεσθῶσιν.
They do not jostle one another; each proceeds in his path. They burst through the defenses, never breaking ranks.
τῆς πόλεως ἐπιλήμψονται, καὶ ἐπὶ τῶν τειχέων δραμοῦνται, καὶ ἐπὶ ταῖς οἰκίαις ἀναβήσονται, καὶ διὰ θυρίδων εἰσελεύσονται ὡς κλέπται.
They storm the city; they run along the wall; they climb into houses, entering through windows like thieves.
πρὸ προσώπου αὐτοῦ συγχυθήσεται ἡ γῆ καὶ σεισθήσεται ὁ οὐρανός, ὁ ἥλιος καὶ ἡ σελήνη συσκοτάσουσιν, καὶ τὰ ἄστρα δύσουσιν τὸ φέγγος αὐτῶν.
Before them the earth quakes; the heavens tremble. The sun and moon grow dark, and the stars lose their brightness.
καὶ Κύριος δώσει φωνὴν αὐτοῦ πρὸ προσώπου δυνάμεως αὐτοῦ, ὅτι πολλή ἐστιν σφόδρα ἡ παρεμβολὴ αὐτοῦ, ὅτι ἰσχυρὰ ἔργα λόγων αὐτοῦ· διότι μεγάλη ἡμέρα τοῦ κυρίου, μεγάλη καὶ ἐπιφανὴς σφόδρα, καὶ τίς ἔσται ἱκανὸς αὐτῇ;
The LORD raises His voice in the presence of His army. Indeed, His camp is very large, for mighty are those who obey His command. For the Day of the LORD is great and very dreadful. Who can endure it?
καὶ νῦν λέγει Κύριος ὁ θεὸς ὑμῶν Ἐπιστράφητε πρὸς μέ ἐξ ὅλης τῆς καρδίας ὑμῶν καὶ ἐν νηστείᾳ καὶ ἐν κλαυθμῷ καὶ ἐν κοπετῷ,
“Yet even now,” declares the LORD, “return to Me with all your heart, with fasting, weeping, and mourning.”
καὶ διαρήξατε τὰς καρδίας ὑμῶν καὶ μὴ τὰ ἱμάτια ὑμῶν, καὶ ἐπιστράφητε πρὸς Κύριον τὸν θεὸν ὑμῶν, ὅτι ἐλεήμαων καὶ οἰκτίρμων ἐστίν, μακρόθυμος καὶ πολυέλεος καὶ μετανοῶν ἐπὶ ταῖς κακίαις.
So rend your hearts and not your garments, and return to the LORD your God. For He is gracious and compassionate, slow to anger, abounding in loving devotion (note: Forms of the Hebrew chesed are translated here and in most cases throughout the Scriptures as loving devotion; the range of meaning includes love, goodness, kindness, faithfulness, and mercy, as well as loyalty to a covenant.). And He relents from sending disaster.
τίς οἶδεν εἰ ἐπιστρέψει καὶ μετανοήσει, καὶ ὑπολείψεται ὀπίσω αὐτοῦ εὐλογίαν, θυσίαν καὶ σπονδὴν Κυρίῳ τῷ θεῷ ἡμῶν;
Who knows? He may turn and relent and leave a blessing behind Him—grain and drink offerings for the LORD your God.
Σαλπίσατε σάλπιγγι ἐν Σειών, ἁγιάσατε νηστίαν, κηρύξατε θεραπείαν,
Blow the ram’s horn in Zion, consecrate a fast, proclaim a sacred assembly.
συναγάγετε λαόν, ἁγιάσατε ἐκκλησίαν, ἐκλέξασθε πρεσβυτέρους, συναγάγετε νήπια θηλάζοντα μαστούς, ἐξελθάτω νυμφίος ἐκ τοῦ κοιτῶνος αὐτοῦ καὶ νύμφη ἐκ τοῦ παστοῦ αὐτῆς.
Gather the people, sanctify the congregation, assemble the aged, gather the children, even those nursing at the breast. Let the bridegroom leave his room, and the bride her chamber.
ἀνὰ μέσον τῆς κρηπῖδος τοῦ θυσιαστηρίου κλαύσονται οἱ ἱερεῖς οἱ λειτουργοῦντες Κυρίῳ καὶ ἐροῦσιν Φεῖσαι, Κύριε, τοῦ λαοῦ σου, καὶ μὴ δῷς τὴν κληρονομίαν σου εἰς ὄνειδος τοῦ κατάρξαι αὐτῶν ἔθνη, ὅπως μὴ εἵπαωσιν ἐν τοῖς ἔθνεσιν Ιοῦ ἐστιν ὁ θεὸς αὐτῶν;
Let the priests who minister before the LORD weep between the portico and the altar, saying, “Spare Your people, O LORD, and do not make Your heritage a reproach, an object of scorn among the nations. Why should they say among the peoples, ‘Where is their God?’”
Καὶ ἐζήλωσεν Κύριος τὴν γῆν αὐτοῦ, καὶ ἐφείσατο τοῦ λαοῦ αὐτοῦ.
Then the LORD became jealous for His land, and He spared His people.
καὶ ἀπεκρίθη Κύριος καὶ εἶπεν τῷ λαῷ αὐτοῦ Ἴδου ἐγὼ ἐξαποστέλλω ὑμῖν τὸν σῖτον καὶ τὸν οἶνον καὶ τὸ ἔλαιον, καὶ ἐμπληφθήσεσθε αὐτῶν, καὶ οὐ δώσω ὑμᾶς οὐκέτι εἰς ὀνειδισμὸν ἐν τοῖς ἔθνεσι
And the LORD answered His people: “Behold, I will send you grain, new wine, and oil, and by them you will be satisfied. I will never again make you a reproach among the nations.
καὶ τὸν ἀπὸ βορρᾶ ἐκδιώξω ἀφʼ ὑμῶν καὶ ἐξώσω αὐτὸν εἰς γῆν ἄνυδρον, καὶ ἀφανιῶ τὸ πρόσωπον αὐτοῦ εἰς τὴν θάλασσαν τὴν πρώτην, καὶ τὰ ὀπίσω αὐτοῦ εἰς τὴν θάλασσαν τὴν ἐσχάτην· καὶ ἀναβήσεται σαπρία αὐτοῦ, καὶ ἀναβήσεται ὁ βρόμος αὐτοῦ, ὅτι ἐμεγάλυνεν τὰ ἔργα αὐτοῦ.
The northern army I will drive away from you, banishing it to a barren and desolate land, its front ranks into the Eastern (note: That is, the Mediterranean Sea, also called the Great Sea) an class="annot-tooltip" tabindex="0" data-tooltip="That is, the Dead Sea" title="That is, the Dead Sea">Sea (note: That is, the Dead Sea), and its rear guard into the Western Sea. And its stench will rise; its foul odor will ascend. For He has done great things.
θάρσει, γῆ. χαῖρε καὶ εὐφραίνου, ὅτι ἐμεγάλυνεν Κύριος τοῦ ποιῆσαι.
Do not be afraid, O land; rejoice and be glad, for the LORD has done great things.
θαρσεῖτε, κτήνη τοῦ πεδίου, ὅτι βεβλάστηκεν πεδία τῆς ἐρήμου, ὅτι ξύλον ἤνεγκεν τὸν καρπὸν αὐτοῦ, συκῆ καὶ ἄμπελος ἔδωκαν τὴν ἰσχὺν αὐτῶν.
Do not be afraid, O beasts of the field, for the open pastures have turned green, the trees bear their fruit, and the fig tree and vine yield their best (note: Literally their strength).
καὶ τὰ τέκνα Σειών, χαίρετε καὶ εὐφραίνεσθε ἐπὶ τῷ κυρίῳ θεῷ ὑμῶν, διότι ἔδωκεν ὑμῖν τὰ βρώματα εἰς δικαιοσύνην, καὶ βρέξει ὑμῖν ὑετὸν πρόιμον καὶ ὄψιμον καθὼς ἔμπροσθεν,
Be glad, O children of Zion, and rejoice in the LORD your God, for He has given you the autumn rains for your vindication. He sends you showers, both autumn and spring rains, as before.
καὶ πλησθήσονται αἱ ἄλωνες σίτου, καὶ ὐπερχυθήσονται αἱ ληνοὶ οἴνου καὶ ἐλαίου.
The threshing floors will be full of grain, and the vats will overflow with new wine and oil.
καὶ ἀνταποδώσει ὑμῖν ἀντὶ τῶν ἐτῶν ὦν κατέφαγεν ἡ ἀκρὶς καὶ ὁ βροῦχος καὶ ἡ ἐρυσίβη καὶ ἡ κάμπη, ἡ δύναμίς μου ἡ μεγάλη ἣν ἐξαπέστειλα εἰς ὑμᾶς·
I will repay you for the years eaten by locusts—the swarming locust, the young locust, the destroying locust, and the devouring locust (note: The precise identification of the four kinds of insects mentioned here is uncertain.)—My great army that I sent against you.
καὶ φάγεσθε ἐσθίοντες καὶ ἐμπλησθήσεσθε, καὶ αἰνέσετε τὸ ὄνομα Κυρίου τοῦ θεοῦ ὑμῶν, ἄ ἐποίησεν μεθʼ ὑμῶν εἰς θαυμάσια, καὶ οὐ μὴ καταισχυνθῇ ὁ λαός μου εἰς τὸν αἰῶνα·
You will have plenty to eat, until you are satisfied. You will praise the name of the LORD your God, who has worked wonders for you. My people will never again be put to shame.
καὶ ἐπιγνόσεσθε ὅτι ἐν μέσῳ τοῦ Ἰσραὴλ ἐγὼ εἰμι, καὶ ἐγὼ Κύριος ὁ θεὸς ὑμῶν, καὶ οὐκ ἔστιν ἔτι πλὴν ἐμοῦ, καὶ οὐ μὴ καταισχυνθῶσιν ἔτι ὁ λαός μου εἰς τὸν αἰῶνα.
Then you will know that I am present in Israel and that I am the LORD your God, and there is no other. My people will never again be put to shame.
Καὶ ἔσται μετὰ ταῦτα καὶ ἐκχεῶ ἀπὸ τοῦ πνεύματός μου ἐπὶ πᾶσαν σάρκα, καὶ προφητεύσουσιν οἱ υἱοὶ ὑμῶν καὶ αἱ θυγατέρες ὑμῶν, καὶ οἱ πρεσβύτεροι ὑμῶν ἐνύπνια ἐνυπνιασθήσονται, καὶ οἱ νεαυίσκοι ὑμῶν ὁράσεις ὄψονται·
And afterward, I will pour out My Spirit on all people. Your sons and daughters will prophesy, your old men will dream dreams, your young men will see visions.
καὶ ἐπὶ τοὺς δούλους μου καὶ ἐπὶ τὰς δούλας ἐν ταῖς ἡμέραις ἐκείναις ἐκχεῶ ἀπὸ τοῦ πνεύματός μου·
Even on My menservants and maidservants, I will pour out My Spirit in those days.
καὶ δώσω τέρατα ἐν τῷ οὐρανῷ, καὶ ἐπὶ τῆς γῆς αἷμα καὶ πῦρ καὶ ἀτμίδα καπνοῦ·
I will show wonders in the heavens and on the earth, blood and fire and columns (note: LXX clouds or billows) of smoke.
ὁ ἥλιος μεταστραφήσεται εἰς σκότος καὶ ἡ σελήνη εἰς αἵμα πρὶν ἐλθεῖν ἡμέραν Κυρίου τὴν μεγάλην καὶ ἐπιφανῆ·
The sun will be turned to darkness and the moon to blood before the coming of the great and awesome (note: Or dreadful; LXX glorious) Day of the LORD.
καὶ ἔσται πᾶς ὅς ἂν ἐπικαλέσηται τὸ ὄνομα Κυρίου σωθήσεται ὅτι ἐν τῷ ὄρει Σειὼν καὶ ἐν Ἰερουσαλὴμ ἔσται ἀνασωζόμενος, καθότι εἶπεν Κύριος, καὶ εὐαγγελιζόμενοι οὓς Κύριος προσκέκληται.
And everyone who calls on the name of the LORD will be saved (note: Cited in Acts 2:17–21 and Romans 10:13); for on Mount Zion and in Jerusalem there will be deliverance, as the LORD has promised, among the remnant called by the LORD.
