9:1

῾γπολαβὼν δὲ Ἰὼβ λέγει

Then Job answered:

9:2

Ἐπ᾿ ἀληθεἰς οἶδα ὅτι οὕτως ἐστίν. πῶς γὰρ ἔσται δίκαιος βροτὸς παρὰ Κυρίῳ;

“Yes, I know that it is so, but how can a mortal be righteous before God?

9:3

ἐὰν γὰρ βούληται κριθῆναι αὐτῷ, οὐ μὴ ὑπακούσῃ αὐτῷ, ἳνα μὴ ἀντείπῃ πρὸς ἔνα λόγον αὐτοῦ ἐκ χιλίων.

If one wished to contend with God, he could not answer Him one time out of a thousand.

9:4

σοφὸς γάρ ἐστιν διανοίᾳ, κραταιός τε καὶ μέγας· τίς σκληρὸς γενόμενος ἐναντίον αὐτοῦ ὑπέμεινεν;

God is wise in heart and mighty in strength. Who has resisted Him and prospered?

9:5

ὁ παλαιῶν ὄρη, οὐκ οἴδασιν, ὁ καταστρέφων αὐτὰ ὀργῇ·

He moves mountains without their knowledge and overturns them in His anger.

9:6

ὁ σείων τὴν ὑπʼ οὐρανὸν ἐκ θεμελίων, οἱ δὲ στύλοι αὐτῆς σαλεύονται·

He shakes the earth from its place, so that its foundations tremble.

9:7

ὁ λέγων τῷ ἡλίῳ καὶ οὐκ ἀνατέλλει, κατὰ δὲ ἄστρων κατασφραγίζει, κατὰ δὲ ἀγγέλων αὐτοῦ σκόλιόν τι ἐπενόησεν,

He commands the sun not ; He seals off the stars.

9:8

ὁ τανύσας τὸν οὐρανὸν μόνος, περιπατῶν ὡς ἐπʼ ἐδάφους ἐπὶ θαλάσσης·

He alone stretches out the heavens and treads on the waves of the sea.

9:9

ὁ ποιῶν Πλειάδα καὶ Ἕσπερον καὶ Ἀρκτοῦρον καὶ ταμεῖα Νότου·

He is the Maker of the Bear and Orion, of the Pleiades and the constellations of the south.

9:10

ὁ ποιῶν μεγάλα καὶ ἀνεξιχνίαστα, ἔνδοξά τε καὶ ἐξαίσια, ὦν οὐκ ἔστιν ἀριθμός.

He does great things beyond searching out, and wonders without number.

9:11

ἐὸν ὑπερβῇ με. οὐ μὴ ἴδω· καὶ ἐὰν παρέλθῃ με, οὐδʼ ὣς ἔγνων.

Were He to pass by me, I would not see Him; were He to move, I would not recognize Him.

9:12

ἐὰν ἀπαλλάξῃ, τίς ἀποστρέψεις ἤ τίς ἐρεῖ αὐτῷ Τί ἐποίησας;

If , who can stop Him? Who dares to ask Him, ‘What are You doing?’

9:13

αὐτὸς γὰρ ἀπέστραπται ὀργήν, ὑπʼ αὐτοῦ ἐκάμφθησαν κήτη τὰ ὑπʼ οὐρανόν.

God does not restrain His anger; the helpers of Rahab cower beneath Him.

9:14

ἐὸν δέ μου ὑπακούσεται, ἦ διακρινεῖ τὰ ῥήματά μου.

How then can I answer Him or choose my arguments against Him?

9:15

ἐὰν γὰρ δίκαιος, οὐκ εἰσακούσεταί μου, τοῦ κρίματος αὐτοῦ δεηθήσομαι·

For even if I were right, I could not answer. I could only beg my Judge for mercy.

9:16

ἐάν τε καλέσαν καὶ μὴ ὑπακούσῃ, οὐ πιστεύω ὅτι εἰσακήκοεν μου.

If I summoned Him and He answered me, I do not believe He would listen to my voice.

9:17

μὴ γνόφῳ με ἐκτρίψῃς πολλὰ δέ μου τὰ συντρίμματα πεποίηκεν διά κενῆς.

For He would crush me with a tempest and multiply my wounds without cause.

9:18

οὐκ ἐῷ γάρ με ἀναπνεῦσαι, ἐνέπλησεν δέ με πικρίας.

He does not let me catch my breath, but overwhelms me with bitterness.

9:19

ὅτι μέν γὰρ ἰσχύει, κρατεῖ τίς οὗν κρίματι αὐτοῦ ἀντιστήσεται;

If it is a matter of strength, He is indeed mighty! If it is a matter of justice, who ?

9:20

ἐὰν γὰρ ὦ δίκαιος, τὸ στόμα μου ἀσεβήσει· ἐάν τε ὦ ἄμεμπτος, σκολιὸς ἀποβήσομαι.

Even if I were righteous, my mouth would condemn me; if I were blameless, .

9:21

εἴτε γὰρ ἠσέβησα, οὐκ οἶδα τῆ ψυχῇ. πλὴν ἀφαιρεῖταί μου ἡ ζωή.

Though I am blameless, I have no concern for myself; I despise my own life.

9:22

διὸ εἶπον Μέγαν καὶ δυνάστην ἀπολλύει ὀργή,

It is all the same, and so I say, ‘He destroys both the blameless and the wicked.’

9:23

ὅτι φαῦλοι ἐν θανάτῳ ἐξαισίῳ, ἀλλὰ δίκαιοι καταγελῶνται·

When the scourge brings sudden death, He mocks the despair of the innocent.

9:24

παραδέδονται γὰρ εἰς χεῖρας ἀσεβοῦς. πρόσωπα κριτῶν αὐτῆς συνκαλύπτει· εἰ δὲ μὴ αὐτός ἐστιν, τίς ἐστιν;

The earth is given into the hand of the wicked; He blindfolds its judges. If it is not He, then who is it?

9:25

ὁ δὲ βίος μού ἐστιν ἐλαφρώτερος δρομέως· ἀπέδρασαν, καὶ οὐκ εἴδοσαν.

My days are swifter than a runner; they flee without seeing good.

9:26

ἢ καὶ ἔστιν ναυσὶν ἴχνος ὁδοῦ, ἢ ἀετοῦ πετομένου ζητοῦντος βοράν

They sweep by like boats of papyrus, like an eagle swooping down on its prey.

9:27

ἐάν τε γὰρ εἴπω, ἐπιλήσομαι λαλῶν, συνκύψας τῷ προσώπῳ στενάξω.

If I were to say, ‘I will forget my complaint and change my expression and smile,’

9:28

σείομαι πᾶσιν τοῖς μέλεσιν, οἶδα γὰρ ὅτι οὐκ ἀθῷόν με ἐάσεις.

I would still dread all my sufferings; I know that You will not acquit me.

9:29

ἐπειδὴ δέ εἰμι ἀσεβῆς, διὰ τί οὐκ ἀπέθανον;

Since I am already found guilty, why should I labor in vain?

9:30

ἐὰν γὰρ ἀπολούσωμαι χιόνι, καὶ ἀποκαθάρωμαι χερσὶν καθαραῖς,

If I should wash myself and cleanse my hands with lye,

9:31

ἱκανῶς ἐν ῥύπῳ με ἔβαψας, ἐβδελύξατο δέ με ἡ στολή.

then You would plunge me into the pit, and even my own clothes would despise me.

9:32

οὐ γὰρ εἶ ἄνθρωπος κατʼ ἐμὲ ᾧ ἀντικρινομαι, ἳνα ἔλθωμεν ὁμοθυμαδὸν εἰς κρίσιν.

For He is not a man like me, that I can answer Him, that we can take each other to court.

9:33

εἲθε ἦν ὁ μεσίτης ἡμῶν καὶ ἐλέγχων καὶ διακούων ἀνὰ μέσον ἀμφοτέρων·

Nor is there a mediator between us, to lay his hand upon us both.

9:34

ἀπαλλαξάτω ἀπʼ ἐμοῦ τὴν ῥάβδον, ὁ δὲ φόβος αὐτοῦ μή με στροβείτω,

Let Him remove His rod from me, so that His terror will no longer frighten me.

9:35

καὶ οὐ μὴ φοβηθῶ ἀλλὰ λαλήσω· οὐ γὰρ οὕτω συνεπίσταμαι,

Then I would speak without fear of Him. But as it is, I am on my own.
