οὐ μὴν δὲ ἀλλὰ ἄκουσον, Ἰὼβ, τὰ ῥήματά μου. καὶ λαλιὰν ἐνωτίζου μου·
“But now, O Job, hear my speech, and listen to all my words.
ἰδοὺ γὰρ ἤνοξα τὸ στόμα μου, καὶ ἐλάλησεν ἡ γλῶσσά μου.
Behold, I will open my mouth; my address is on the tip of my tongue.
καθαρά μου ἡ καρδία ῥήμασιν, σύνεσις δέ χειλέων μου καθαρὰ νοήσει.
My words are from an upright heart, and my lips speak sincerely what I know.
πνεῦμα θεῖον τὸ ποιῆσάν με, πνοὴ δὲ αντοκράτορος ἡ διδάσκουσά με.
The Spirit of God has made me, and the breath of the Almighty gives me life.
ἐὸ δός μοι ἀπόκρισιν πρὸς ταῦτα· ὑπόμεινον, στῆθι κατʼ ἐμέ καὶ ἐγὼ κατὰ σέ.
Refute me if you can; prepare your case and confront me.
ἐκ πηλοῦ διήρτισαι σὺ ὡς καὶ ἐγώ· ἐκ τοῦ αὐτοῦ διηρτίσμεθα.
I am just like you before God; I was also formed from clay.
οὐχ ὁ φόβος μού σε στροβήσει, οὐδὲ ἡ χείρ μου βαρεῖα ἔσται ἐπὶ σοί.
Surely no fear of me should terrify you; nor will my hand be heavy upon you.
χλὴν εἶπας ἐν ὠσίν μου, φωνὴν ῥημάτων ἀκήκοα
Surely you have spoken in my hearing, and I have heard these very words:
διότι λέγεις Καθαρός εἰμι, οὐχ ἁμαρτών· ἄμεμπτός εἰμι, οὐ γὰρ ἠνόμησα.
‘I am pure, without transgression; I am clean, with no iniquity in me.
μέμψιν δὲ κατʼ ἐμοῦ εὖρεν, ἥγηται δέ με ὥσπερ ὑπεναντίον·
Yet God finds occasions against me; He counts me as His enemy.
ἔθετο δὲ ἐν ξύλῳ τὸν πόδα μου. ἐφύλαξεν δέ μου πάσας τὰς ὁδούς.
He puts my feet in the stocks; He watches over all my paths.’
πῶς γὰρ λέγεις Δίκαιός εἰμι, καὶ οὐκ ἐπακήκοέν μου αἰώνιος γάρ ἐστιν ὁ ἐπάνω βροτῶν.
Behold, you are not right in this matter. I will answer you, for God is greater than man.
λέγεις δέ Διὰ τί τῆς δίκης μου οὐκ ἐπακήκοέν μου πᾶν ῥῆμα
Why do you complain to Him that He answers nothing a man asks (note: Or that He answers for none of His actions)?
ἐν γὰρ τῷ ἅπαξ λαλήσαι ὁ κύριος. ἐν δὲ τῷ δευτέρῳ·
For God speaks in one way and in another, yet no one notices.
ἐνύπνιον, ἤ ἐν μελέτῃ νυκτερινῇ. ὡς ὅταν ἐπιπίπτῃ δεινὸς φόβος ἐπʼ ἀνθρώπους, ἐπὶ νυσταγμάτων ἐπὶ κοίτης·
In a dream, in a vision in the night, when deep sleep falls upon men as they slumber on their beds,
τότε ἀνακαλύπτει νοῦν ἀνθρώπων, ἐν εἴδεσιν φόβου τοιούτοις αὐτοὺς ἐξεφόβησεν.
He opens their ears and terrifies them with warnings
ἀποστρέψαι ἄνθρωπον ἀπὸ ἀδικίας· τὸ δὲ σῶμα αὐτοῦ ἀπὸ πτώματος ἐρρύσατο.
to turn a man from wrongdoing and keep him from pride,
ἐφείσατο δὲ τῆς ψυχῆς αὐτοῦ ἀπὸ θανάτου, καὶ μὴ πεσεῖν αὐτὸν ἐν πολεμῇ.
to preserve his soul from the Pit and his life from perishing by the sword.
πάλιν δὲ ἤλεγξεν αὐτὸν ἐπὶ μαλακίᾳ ἐπὶ κοίτης. καὶ πλῆθος ὀστῶν αὐτοῦ ἐνάρκησεν·
A man is also chastened on his bed with pain and constant distress in his bones,
πᾶν δὲ βρωτὸν σίτου οὐ μὴ δύνηται προσδέξασθαι, καὶ ἡ ψυχὴ αὐτοῦ βρῶσιν ἐπιθυμήσει·
so that he detests his bread, and his soul loathes his favorite food.
ἕως ἂν σαπῶσιν αὐτοῦ αἱ σάρκες, καὶ ἀποδείξῃ τὰ ὀστᾶ αὐτοῦ κενά.
His flesh wastes away from sight, and his hidden bones protrude.
ἤγγισεν δὲ εἰς θάνατον ἡ ψυχὴ αὐτοῦ, ἥδε ἡ ςωὴ αὐταῦ ν ᾅδῃ·
He draws near to the Pit, and his life to the messengers of death.
ἐὰν ὢσιν χίλιοι ἄγγελοι θανατηφόροι, εἶς αὐτῶν οὐ μὴ τρώσῃ αὐτόν. ἐὰν νοήσῃ τῇ καρδίᾳ ἐπιστραφῆναι πρὸς Κύριρν, ἀναγγείλῃ δὲ ἀνθρώπῳ τὴν ἑαυτοῦ μέμψιν, τὴν δὲ ἄνοιαν αὐτοῦ δείξῃ,
Yet if there is a messenger on his side, one mediator in a thousand, to tell a man what is right for him,
ἀνθέξεται τοῦ μὴ πεσεῖν εἰς θάνατον· ἀνανεώσει δὲ αὐτοῦ τὸ σῶμα ὥσπερ ἀλοιφὴν ἐπὶ τοίχου, τὰ δὲ ὀστᾶ αὐτοῦ ἐμπλήσει μυελοῦ·
to be gracious to him and say, ‘Spare him from going down to the Pit; I have found his ransom,’
ἁπαλυνεῖ δὲ αὐτοῦ τὰς σάρκας ὥσπερ νηπίου, ἀποκαταστήσει δὲ αὐτὸν ἀνδρωθέντα ἐν ἀνθρώποις.
then his flesh is refreshed like a child’s; he returns to the days of his youth.
εὐξάμενος δὲ πρὸς Κύριον, καὶ δεκτὰ αὐτῷ ἔσται, εἰσελεύσεται δὲ προσώπῳ ἱλαρῷ σὺν ἐξηγορίᾳ· ἀποδώσει δὲ ἀνθρώποις δικαιοσύνην.
He prays to God and finds favor; he sees God’s face and shouts for joy, and God restores His righteousness to that man.
εἶτα τότε ἀπομέμψεται ἄνθρωπος αὐτὸς ἑαυτῷ λέγων Οἶα συνετέλουν; καὶ οὐκ ἄξια ἤτασέν με ὧν ἥμαρτον.
Then he sings before (note: Or Then he looks upon) men with these words: ‘I have sinned and perverted what was right; yet I did not get what I deserved.
σῶσον ψυχὴν μου τοῦ μὴ ἐλθεῖν εἰς διαφθοράν, καὶ ἡ ζωή μου φῶς ὄψεται.
He redeemed my soul from going down to the Pit, and I will live to see the light.’
ἰδοὺ ταῦτα πάντα ἐργᾶται ὁ ἰσχυρὸς ὁδοὺς τρεῖς μετὰ ἀνδρός·
Behold, all these things God does to a man, two or even three times,
ἀλλ’ ἐρὔσατο τὴν ψυχήν μου ἐκ θανάτου, ἵνα ἡ ζωή μου ἐν φωτὶ αἰνῇ αὐτόν.
to bring back his soul from the Pit, that he may be enlightened with the light of life.
ἐνωτίζου, Ἰὼβ, καὶ ἄκουέ μου· κώφευσον, καὶ ἐγώ εἰμι λαλήσω. λάλησον, θέλω γὰρ δικαιωθῆναί σε.
Pay attention, Job, and listen to me; be silent, and I will speak.
εἰ μή, σὺ ἄκουσόν μου· κώφευσον, καὶ διδάξω σε.
But if not, then listen to me; be quiet, and I will teach you wisdom.”
