Καὶ ἐβασίλευσεν Σεδεκίας υἱὸς Ἰωσεία ἀντὶ Ἰωακείμ, ὃν ἐβασίλευσεν Ναβουχοδονοσὸρ βασιλεύειν τοῦ Ἰούδα.
37:1
Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon made Zedekiah son of Josiah the king of Judah, and he reigned in place of Coniah (note: Coniah is a variant of Jehoiachin.) son of Jehoiakim.
καὶ οὐκ ἤκουσαν αὐτὸς καὶ οἱ παῖδες αὐτοῦ καὶ ὁ λαὸς τῆς γῆς τοὺς λόγους Κυρίου οὓς ἐλάλησεν ἐν χειρὶ Ἰερεμίου.
37:2
But he and his officers and the people of the land refused to obey the words that the LORD had spoken through Jeremiah the prophet.
καὶ ἀπέστειλεν ὁ βασιλεὺς Σεδεκίας τὸν Ἰωαχὰλ υἱὸν Σελεμίου καὶ τὸν Σοφονίαν υἱὸν Μαασαίου τὸν ἱερέα πρὸς Ἰερεμίαν λέγων Πρόσευξαι δὴ περὶ ἡμῶν πρὸς Κύριον.
37:3
Yet King Zedekiah sent Jehucal (note: Jehucal is a variant of Jucal; see Jeremiah 38:1.) son of Shelemiah and Zephaniah the priest, the son of Maaseiah, to Jeremiah the prophet with the message, “Please pray to the LORD our God for us!”
καὶ Ἰερεμίας ἦλθεν καὶ διῆλθεν διὰ μέσου τῆς πόλεως, καὶ οὐκ ἔδωκαν αὐτὸν εἰς οἶκον τῆς φυλακῆς.
37:4
Now Jeremiah was free to come and go among the people, for they had not yet put him in prison.
καὶ δύναμις Φαραὼ ἐξῆλθεν ἐξ Αἰγύπτου, καὶ ἤκουσαν οἱ Χαλδαῖοι τὴν ἀκοὴν αὐτῶν, καὶ ἀνέβησαν ἐπὶ Ἰερουσαλήμ.
37:5
Pharaoh’s army had left Egypt, and when the Chaldeans (note: That is, the Babylonians; also in verses 8, 9, 13, and 14) who were besieging Jerusalem heard the report, they withdrew from Jerusalem.
καὶ ἐγένετο λόγος Κυρίου πρὸς Ἰερεμίαν λέγων
37:6
Then the word of the LORD came to Jeremiah the prophet:
Οὕτως εἶπεν Κύριος Οὕτως ἐρεῖς πρὸς βασιλέα Ἰούδα τὸν ἀποστείλαντα πρὸς σὲ τοῦ ἐκζητῆσαί με Ἰδοὺ δύναμις Φαραὼ ἡ ἐξελθοῦσα ὑμῖν εἰς βοήθειαν ἀποστρέψουσιν εἰς γῆν Αἰγύπτου,
37:7
“This is what the LORD, the God of Israel, says that you are to tell the king of Judah, who sent you to Me: Behold, Pharaoh’s army, which has marched out to help you, will go back to its own land of Egypt.
καὶ ἀναστρέψουσιν αὐτοὶ οἱ Χολδαῖοι καὶ πολεμήσουσιν ἐπὶ τὴν πόλιν ταύτην, καὶ συλλήμψονται αὐτὴν καὶ καύσουσιν αὐτὴν πυρί.
37:8
Then the Chaldeans will return and fight against this city. They will capture it and burn it down.
ὅτι οὕτως εἶπεν Κύριος Μὴ ὑπολάβητε ταῖς ψυχαῖς ὑμῶν λέγοντες Ἀποτρέχοντες ἀπελεύσονται ἀφʼ ἡμῶν οἱ Χαλδαῖοι, ὅτι οὐ μὴ ἀπέλθωσιν,
37:9
This is what the LORD says: Do not deceive yourselves by saying, ‘The Chaldeans will go away for good,’ for they will not!
καὶ ἐὰν πατάξητε πᾶσαν δύναμιν τῶν Χαλδαίων τοὺς πολεμοῦντας ὑμᾶς, καὶ καταλειφθῶσίν τινες ἐκκεκεντημένοι, ἕκαστος ἐν τῷ τόπῳ αὐτοῦ οὗτοι ἀναστήσονται καὶ καύσουσιν τὴν πόλιν ταύτην ἐν πυρί.
37:10
Indeed, if you were to strike down the entire army of the Chaldeans that is fighting against you, and only wounded men remained in their tents, they would still get up and burn this city down.”
Καὶ ἐγένετο ὅτε ἀνέβη ἡ δύναμις τῶν Χαλδαίων ἀπὸ Ἰερουσαλὴμ ἀπὸ προσώπου τῆς δυνάμεως Φαραώ,
37:11
When the Chaldean army withdrew from Jerusalem for fear of Pharaoh’s army,
ἐξῆλθεν Ἰερεμίας ἀπὸ Ἰερουσαλὴμ τοῦ πορευθῆναι εἰς γῆν Βενιαμεὶν τοῦ ἀγοράσαι ἐκεῖθεν ἐν μέσῳ τοῦ λαοῦ.
37:12
Jeremiah started to leave Jerusalem to go to the land of Benjamin to claim his portion there (note: Literally to divide from there) among the people.
καὶ ἐγένετο αὐτὸς ἐν πύλῃ Βενιαμείν, καὶ ἐκεῖ ἄνθρωπος παρʼ ᾧ κατέλυεν Σαρουιὰ υἱὸς Σελεμίου υἱοῦ Ἀνανίου, καὶ συνέλαβεν τὸν Ἰερεμίαν λέγων Πρὸς τοὺς Χαλδαίους σὺ φεύγεις;
37:13
But when he reached the Gate of Benjamin, the captain of the guard, whose name was Irijah son of Shelemiah, the son of Hananiah, seized him and said, “You are deserting to the Chaldeans!”
καὶ εἶπεν Ψεῦδος· οὐκ εἰς τοὺς Χαλδαίους ἐγὼ φεύγω. καὶ οὐκ εἰσήκουσεν αὐτοῦ, καὶ συνέλαβεν Σαρουιὰ τὸν Ἰερεμίαν καὶ εἰσήγαγεν αὐτὸν πρὸς τοὺς ἄρχοντας.
37:14
“That is a lie,” Jeremiah replied. “I am not deserting to the Chaldeans!” But Irijah would not listen to him; instead, he arrested Jeremiah and took him to the officials.
καὶ ἐπικράνθησαν οἱ ἄρχοντες ἐπὶ Ἰερεμίαν καὶ ἐπάταξαν αὐτόν, καὶ ἀπέστειλαν αὐτὸν εἰς τὴν οἰκίαν Ἰωναθὰμ τοῦ γραμματέως, ὅτι ταύτην ἐποίησαν εἰς οἰκίαν φυλακῆς.
37:15
The officials were angry with Jeremiah, and they beat him and placed him in jail in the house of Jonathan the scribe, for it had been made into a prison.
καὶ ἦλθεν Ἰερεμίας εἰς οἰκίαν τοῦ λάκκου καὶ εἰς τὴν χερέθ, καὶ ἐκάθισεν ἐκεῖ ἡμέρας πολλάς.
37:16
So Jeremiah went into a cell in the dungeon and remained there a long time.
καὶ ἀπέστειλεν Σεδεκίας καὶ ἐκάλεσεν αὐτόν, καὶ ἠρώτα αὐτὸν ὁ βασιλεὺς κρυφαίως εἰπεῖν Εἰ ἔστιν ὁ λόγος παρὰ Κυρίου; καὶ εἶπεν Ἐστιν· εἰς χεῖρας βασιλέως Βαβυλῶνος παραδοθήσῃ.
37:17
Later, King Zedekiah sent for Jeremiah and received him in his palace, where he asked him privately, “Is there a word from the LORD?” “There is,” Jeremiah replied. “You will be delivered into the hand of the king of Babylon.”
καὶ εἶπεν Ἰερεμίας τῷ βασιλεῖ Τί ἠδίκησά σε καὶ τοὺς παῖδάς σου καὶ τὸν λαὸν τοῦτον, ὅτι σὺ δίδως με εἰς οἰκίαν φυλακῆς
37:18
Then Jeremiah asked King Zedekiah, “How have I sinned against you or your servants or these people, that you have put me in prison?
καὶ ποῦ εἰσιν οἱ προφῆται ὑμῶν οἱ προφητεύσαντες ὑμῖν λέγοντες ὅτι Οὐ μὴ ἔλθῃ βασιλεὺς Βαβυλῶνος ἐπὶ τὴν γῆν ταύτην;
37:19
Where are your prophets who prophesied to you, claiming, ‘The king of Babylon will not come against you or this land’?
καὶ νῦν, κύριε βασιλεῦ, πεσέτω τὸ ἔλεός μου κατὰ πρόσωπόν σου· καὶ τί ἀποστρέφεις με εἰς οἰκίαν Ἰωναθὰμ τοῦ γραμματέως, καὶ οὐ μὴ ἀποθάνω ἐκεῖ ;
37:20
But now please listen, O my lord the king. May my petition come before you. Do not send me back to the house of Jonathan the scribe, or I will die there.”
καὶ συνέταξεν ὁ βασιλεύς, καὶ ἐνεβάλοσαν αὐτὸν εἰς οἰκίαν τῆς φυλακῆς, καὶ ἐδίδοσαν αὐτῷ ἄρτον ἕνα τῆς ἡμέρας ἔξωθεν οὗ πέσσουσιν, ἕως ἐξέλιπον οἱ ἄρτοι ἐκ τῆς πόλεως· καὶ ἐκάθισεν Ἰερεμίας ἐν τῇ αὐλῇ τῆς φυλακῆς.
37:21
So King Zedekiah gave orders for Jeremiah to be placed in the courtyard of the guard and given a loaf of bread daily from the street of the bakers, until all the bread in the city was gone. So Jeremiah remained in the courtyard of the guard.
