Jeremiah 37

Et regnavit rex Sedecias filius Josiæ pro Jechonia filio Joakim, quem constituit regem Nabuchodonosor rex Babylonis in terra Juda :
Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon made Zedekiah son of Josiah the king of Judah, and he reigned in place of Coniah (note: Coniah is a variant of Jehoiachin.) son of Jehoiakim.
et non obedivit ipse, et servi ejus, et populus terræ, verbis Domini, quæ locutus est in manu Jeremiæ prophetæ.
But he and his officers and the people of the land refused to obey the words that the LORD had spoken through Jeremiah the prophet.
Et misit rex Sedecias Juchal filium Selemiæ, et Sophoniam filium Maasiæ, sacerdotem, ad Jeremiam prophetam, dicens : Ora pro nobis Dominum Deum nostrum.
Yet King Zedekiah sent Jehucal (note: Jehucal is a variant of Jucal; see Jeremiah 38:1.) son of Shelemiah and Zephaniah the priest, the son of Maaseiah, to Jeremiah the prophet with the message, “Please pray to the LORD our God for us!”
Jeremias autem libere ambulabat in medio populi : non enim miserant eum in custodiam carceris. Igitur exercitus Pharaonis egressus est de Ægypto, et audientes Chaldæi qui obsidebant Jerusalem, hujuscemodi nuntium, recesserunt ab Jerusalem.
Now Jeremiah was free to come and go among the people, for they had not yet put him in prison.
Et factum est verbum Domini ad Jeremiam prophetam, dicens :
Pharaoh’s army had left Egypt, and when the Chaldeans (note: That is, the Babylonians; also in verses 8, 9, 13, and 14) who were besieging Jerusalem heard the report, they withdrew from Jerusalem.
Hæc dicit Dominus Deus Israël : Sic dicetis regi Juda, qui misit vos ad me interrogandum : Ecce exercitus Pharaonis, qui egressus est vobis in auxilium, revertetur in terram suam in Ægyptum :
Then the word of the LORD came to Jeremiah the prophet:
et redient Chaldæi, et bellabunt contra civitatem hanc, et capient eam, et succendent eam igni.
“This is what the LORD, the God of Israel, says that you are to tell the king of Judah, who sent you to Me: Behold, Pharaoh’s army, which has marched out to help you, will go back to its own land of Egypt.
Hæc dicit Dominus : Nolite decipere animas vestras, dicentes : Euntes abibunt, et recedent a nobis Chaldæi : quia non abibunt.
Then the Chaldeans will return and fight against this city. They will capture it and burn it down.
Sed etsi percusseritis omnem exercitum Chaldæorum qui præliantur adversum vos, et derelicti fuerint ex eis aliqui vulnerati, singuli de tentorio suo consurgent, et incendent civitatem hanc igni.
This is what the LORD says: Do not deceive yourselves by saying, ‘The Chaldeans will go away for good,’ for they will not!
Ergo cum recessisset exercitus Chaldæorum ab Jerusalem, propter exercitum Pharaonis,
Indeed, if you were to strike down the entire army of the Chaldeans that is fighting against you, and only wounded men remained in their tents, they would still get up and burn this city down.”
egressus est Jeremias de Jerusalem ut iret in terram Benjamin, et divideret ibi possessionem in conspectu civium.
When the Chaldean army withdrew from Jerusalem for fear of Pharaoh’s army,
Cumque pervenisset ad portam Benjamin, erat ibi custos portæ per vices, nomine Jerias filius Selemiæ filii Hananiæ : et apprehendit Jeremiam prophetam, dicens : Ad Chaldæos profugis.
Jeremiah started to leave Jerusalem to go to the land of Benjamin to claim his portion there (note: Literally to divide from there) among the people.
Et respondit Jeremias : Falsum est : non fugio ad Chaldæos. Et non audivit eum, sed comprehendit Jerias Jeremiam, et adduxit eum ad principes :
But when he reached the Gate of Benjamin, the captain of the guard, whose name was Irijah son of Shelemiah, the son of Hananiah, seized him and said, “You are deserting to the Chaldeans!”
quam ob rem irati principes contra Jeremiam, cæsum eum miserunt in carcerem qui erat in domo Jonathan scribæ : ipse enim præpositus erat super carcerem.
“That is a lie,” Jeremiah replied. “I am not deserting to the Chaldeans!” But Irijah would not listen to him; instead, he arrested Jeremiah and took him to the officials.
Itaque ingressus est Jeremias in domum laci et in ergastulum : et sedit ibi Jeremias diebus multis.
The officials were angry with Jeremiah, and they beat him and placed him in jail in the house of Jonathan the scribe, for it had been made into a prison.
Mittens autem Sedecias rex, tulit eum : et interrogavit eum in domo sua abscondite, et dixit : Putasne est sermo a Domino ? Et dixit Jeremias : Est : et ait : In manus regis Babylonis traderis.
So Jeremiah went into a cell in the dungeon and remained there a long time.
Et dixit Jeremias ad regem Sedeciam : Quid peccavi tibi, et servis tuis, et populo tuo, quia misisti me in domum carceris ?
Later, King Zedekiah sent for Jeremiah and received him in his palace, where he asked him privately, “Is there a word from the LORD?” “There is,” Jeremiah replied. “You will be delivered into the hand of the king of Babylon.”
ubi sunt prophetæ vestri, qui prophetabant vobis, et dicebant : Non veniet rex Babylonis super vos, et super terram hanc ?
Then Jeremiah asked King Zedekiah, “How have I sinned against you or your servants or these people, that you have put me in prison?
Nunc ergo audi, obsecro, domine mi rex : valeat deprecatio mea in conspectu tuo, et ne me remittas in domum Jonathan scribæ, ne moriar ibi.
Where are your prophets who prophesied to you, claiming, ‘The king of Babylon will not come against you or this land’?
Præcepit ergo rex Sedecias ut traderetur Jeremias in vestibulo carceris, et daretur ei torta panis quotidie, excepto pulmento, donec consumerentur omnes panes de civitate : et mansit Jeremias in vestibulo carceris.
But now please listen, O my lord the king. May my petition come before you. Do not send me back to the house of Jonathan the scribe, or I will die there.”
