Καὶ ἐγένετο τοῦ τεσσαρεσκαιδεκάτου ἔτους βασιλεύοντος Ἑζεκίου ἀνέβη Σενναχηρεὶμ βασιλεὺς Ἀσσυρίων ἐπὶ τὰς πόλεις τῆς Ἰουδαίας τὰς ὀχυρὰς καὶ συνέλαβεν αὐτάς.
In the fourteenth year of Hezekiah’s reign, Sennacherib king of Assyria attacked and captured all the fortified cities of Judah.
καὶ ἀπέστειλεν βασιλεὺς Ἀσσυρίων Ῥαψάκην ἐκ Λαχεὶς εἷς Ἰερουσαλὴμ πρὸς τὸν βασιλέα Ἐζεκίαν μετὰ δυνάμεως πολλῆς, καὶ ἔστη ἐν τῷ ὑδραγωγῷ τῆς κολυμβήθρας τῆς ἅνω, ἐν τῇ ὁδῷ τοῦ ἀγροῦ τοῦ γναφέως.
And the king of Assyria sent the Rabshakeh, with a great army, from Lachish to King Hezekiah at Jerusalem. And he stopped by the aqueduct of the upper pool, on the road to the Launderer’s Field.
καὶ ἐξῆλθεν πρὸς αὐτὸν Ἐλιακεὶμ ὃ τοῦ Χελκίου οἰκονόμος καὶ Σόμνας ὁ γραμματεὺς καὶ Ἰωὰχ ὁ τοῦ Ἀσὰφ ὁ ὑπομνηματογράφος.
Then Eliakim son of Hilkiah the palace administrator, Shebna the scribe, and Joah son of Asaph the recorder, went out to him.
καὶ εἶπεν αὐτοῖς Ῥαψάκης Εἴπατε Τάδε λέγει ὁ βασιλεὺς ὁ μέγας βασιλεὺς Ἀσσυρίων Τί πεποιθὼς εἶ
The Rabshakeh said to them, “Tell Hezekiah that this is what the great king, the king of Assyria, says: What is the basis of this confidence of yours?
μὴ ἐν βουλῇ ἢ ἐν λόγοις χειλέων παράταξις γίνεται; καὶ νῦν ἐπὶ τίνι πέποιθας ὅτι ἀπειθεῖς μοι ;
You claim to have a strategy and strength for war, but these are empty words. In whom are you now trusting, that you have rebelled against me?
ἰδοὺ πεποιθὼς εἶ ἐπὶ τὴν ῥάβδον τὴν καλαμίνην τὴν τεθλασμένην ταύτην, ἐπ’ Αἴγυπτον· ὃς ἂν ἐπιστηριχθῇ ἐπ’ αὑτήν, εἰσελεύσεται εἰς τὴν χεῖρα αὐτοῦ· οὕτως ἐστὶν Φαραὼ βασιλεὺς Αἰγύπτου καὶ πάντες οἱ πεποιθότες ἐπ’ αὐτῷ.
Look now, you are trusting in Egypt, that splintered reed of a staff that will pierce the hand of anyone who leans on it. Such is Pharaoh king of Egypt to all who trust in him.
εἰ δὲ λέγετε Ἐπὶ Κύριον τὸν θεὸν ἡμῶν πεποίθαμεν,
But if you say to me, ‘We trust in the LORD our God,’ is He not the One whose high places and altars Hezekiah has removed, saying to Judah and Jerusalem, ‘You must worship before this altar’?
νῦν μίχθητε τῷ κυρίῳ μου βασιλεῖ Ἀσσυρίων, καὶ δώσω ὑμῖν δισχιλίαν ἵππον, εἰ δυνήσεσθε δοῦναι ἀναβάτας ἐπ’ αὐτούς.
Now, therefore, make a bargain with my master, the king of Assyria. I will give you two thousand horses—if you can put riders on them!
καὶ πῶς δύνασθε ἀποστρέψαι τὸ πρόσωπον τοπάρχου ἑνός ; οἰκέται εἰσὶν οἱ πεποιθότες ἐπ’ Αἰγυπτίοις, εἰς ἵππον καὶ ἀναβάτην.
For how can you repel a single officer among the least of my master’s servants when you depend on Egypt for chariots and horsemen?
καὶ νῦν μὴ ἄνευ Κυρίου ἀνέβημεν ἐπὶ τὴν χώραν ταύτην πολεμῆσαι Καὶ αὐτήν ;
So now, was it apart from the LORD that I have come up against this land to destroy it? The LORD Himself said to me, ‘Go up against this land and destroy it.’”
καὶ εἶπεν πρὸς αὑτὸν Ἐλιακεὶμ καὶ Σόμνας ὃ γραμματεὺς καὶ Ἰωάχ Λάλησον πρὸς τοὺς παῖδάς σου Συριστί, ἀκούομεν γὰρ ἡμεῖς, καὶ μὴ λάλει πρὸς ἡμᾶς Ἰουδαιστί· καὶ ἶνα τί λαλεῖς εἰς τὰ ὦτα τῶν ἀνδρῶν τῶν καθημένων ἐπὶ τῷ τείχει ;
Then Eliakim, Shebna, and Joah said to the Rabshakeh, “Please speak to your servants in Aramaic, since we understand it. Do not speak to us in Hebrew (note: Or in the dialect of Judah; also in verse 13) in the hearing of the people on the wall.”
καὶ εἶπεν πρὸς αὐτοὺς Ῥαψάκης Μὴ πρὸς τὸν κύριον ὑμῶν ἢ πρὸς ὑμᾶς ἀπέσταλκέν με ὁ κύριός μου λαλῆσαι τοὺς λόγους τούτους ; οὐχὶ πρὸς τοὺς ἄνδρας τοὺς καθημένους ἐπὶ τῷ τείχει, ἵνα φάγωσιν κόπρον καὶ πίωσιν οὖρον μεθ’ ὑμῶν ἅμα;
But the Rabshakeh replied, “Has my master sent me to speak these words only to you and your master, and not to the men sitting on the wall, who are destined with you to eat their own dung and drink their own urine?”
καὶ ἔστη Ῥαψάκης, καὶ ἐβόησεν φωνῇ μεγάλῃ Ἰουδαιστὶ καὶ εἶπεν Ἀκούσατε τοὺς λόγους τοῦ βασιλέως τοῦ μεγάλου βασιλέως Ἀσσυρίων
Then the Rabshakeh stood and called out loudly in Hebrew: “Hear the words of the great king, the king of Assyria!
Τάδε λέγει ὁ βασιλεὺς Μὴ ὑμᾶς ἀπατάτω Ἑζεκίας λόγοις, οἶ οὐ μὴ δυνήσονται ῥύσασθαι ὑμᾶς·
This is what the king says: Do not let Hezekiah deceive you, for he cannot deliver you.
καὶ μὴ λεγέτω ὑμῖν Ἑζεκίας ὅτι Ῥύσεται ὑμᾶς ὁ θεός, καὶ οὔ μὴ παραδοθῇ ἡ πόλις αὕτη ἐν χειρὶ βασιλέως Ἀσσυρίων μὴ ἀκούετε Ἑζεκίου·
Do not let Hezekiah persuade you to trust in the LORD when he says, ‘The LORD will surely deliver us; this city will not be given into the hand of the king of Assyria.’
τάδε λέγει ὃ βασιλεὺς Ἀσσυρίων Εἰ βούλεσθε εὐλογηθῆναι, ἐκπορεύεσθε πρὸς μέ, καὶ φάγεσθε ἕκαστος τὴν ἄμπελον αὐτοῦ καὶ τὰς συκᾶς, καὶ πίεσθε ὕδωρ τοῦ λάκκου ὑμῶν,
Do not listen to Hezekiah, for this is what the king of Assyria says: Make peace with me (note: Or Make a blessing with me) and come out to me. Then every one of you will eat from his own vine and his own fig tree, and drink water from his own cistern,
ἔως ἂν ἔλθω καὶ λάβω ὑμᾶς εἷς γῆν ὡς ἦ γῆ ὑμῶν, γῆ σίτου καὶ οἴνου καὶ ἄρτων καὶ ἀμπελώνων.
until I come and take you away to a land like your own—a land of grain and new wine, a land of bread and vineyards.
μὴ ὑμᾶς ἀπατάτω Ἑζεκίας λέγων Ὁ θεὸς ὑμῶν ῥύσεται ὑμᾶς. μὴ ἐρρύσαντο οἱ θεοὶ τῶν ἐθνῶν ἕκαστος τὴν ἑαυτοῦ χώραν ἐκ χειρὸς βασιλέως Ἀσσυρίων;
Do not let Hezekiah mislead you when he says, ‘The LORD will deliver us.’ Has the god of any nation ever delivered his land from the hand of the king of Assyria?
ποῦ ἐστιν ὁ θεὸς Αἱμὰρ καὶ Ἀρφάθ ; καὶ ὃ θεὸς τῆς πόλεως Σεπφαρείμ ; μὴ ἐδύναντο ῥύσασθαι. Σαμάρειαν ἐκ χειρός μου;
Where are the gods of Hamath and Arpad? Where are the gods of Sepharvaim? Have they delivered Samaria from my hand?
τίς τῶν θεῶν πάντων τῶν ἐθνῶν τούτων ἐρρύσατο τὴν γῆν αὐτοῦ ἐκ τῆς χειρός μου, ὅτι ῥύσεται ὃ θεὸς τὴν Ἰερουσαλὴμ ἐκ χειρός μου ;
Who among all the gods of these lands has delivered his land from my hand? How then can the LORD deliver Jerusalem from my hand?”
καὶ ἐσιώπησαν, καὶ οὐδεὶς ἀπεκρίθη αὐτῷ λόγον, διὰ τὸ προστάξαι τὸν βασιλέα μηδένα ἀποκριθῆναι.
But the people remained silent and did not answer a word, for Hezekiah had commanded, “Do not answer him.”
καὶ εἰσῆλθεν εἰσῆλθεν ὁ τοῦ Χελκιίου ὁ οἰκονόμος καὶ Σόμνας ὁ γραμματεὺς τῆς δυνάμεως καὶ Ἰωάχ ὁ τοῦ Ασὰφ ὁ ὑπομνηματογράφος πρὸς Ἐζεκίαν ἐσχισμένοι τοὺς χιτῶνας καὶ ἀπήγγειλαν αὐτῷ τοὺς λόγους Ραψακου.
Then Hilkiah’s son Eliakim the palace administrator, Shebna the scribe, and Asaph’s son Joah the recorder came to Hezekiah with their clothes torn, and they relayed to him the words of the Rabshakeh.
