In die illa visitabit Dominus in gladio suo duro, et grandi, et forti, super Leviathan, serpentem vectem, et super Leviathan, serpentem tortuosum, et occidet cetum qui in mari est.
In that day the LORD will take His sharp, great, and mighty sword, and bring judgment on Leviathan the fleeing serpent (note: Hebrew nachash; translated in most cases as snake; twice in this verse)—Leviathan the coiling serpent—and He will slay the dragon of the sea.
In die illa vinea meri cantabit ei.
In that day: “Sing about a fruitful vineyard.
Ego Dominus qui servo eam ; repente propinabo ei. Ne forte visitetur contra eam, nocte et die servo eam.
I, the LORD, am its keeper; I water it continually. I guard it night and day so no one can disturb it;
Indignatio non est mihi. Quis dabit me spinam et veprem in prælio ? gradiar super eam, succendam eam pariter.
I am not angry. If only thorns and briers confronted Me, I would march and trample them, I would burn them to the ground.
An potius tenebit fortitudinem meam ? faciet pacem mihi, pacem faciet mihi.
Or let them lay claim to My protection; let them make peace with Me—yes, let them make peace with Me.”
Qui ingrediuntur impetu ad Jacob, florebit et germinabit Israël, et implebunt faciem orbis semine.
In the days to come, Jacob will take root. Israel will bud and blossom and fill the whole world with fruit.
Numquid juxta plagam percutientis se percussit eum ? aut sicut occidit interfectos ejus, sic occisus est ?
Has the LORD struck Israel as He struck her oppressors? Was she killed like those who slayed her?
In mensura contra mensuram, cum abjecta fuerit, judicabis eam ; meditatus est in spiritu suo duro per diem æstus.
By warfare and exile (note: Or By driving her away into exile or Measure by measure, by exile) You contended with her and removed her with a fierce wind, as on the day the east wind blows.
Idcirco super hoc dimittetur iniquitas domui Jacob ; et iste omnis fructus : ut auferatur peccatum ejus, cum posuerit omnes lapides altaris sicut lapides cineris allisos : non stabunt luci et delubra.
Therefore Jacob’s guilt will be atoned for, and the full fruit of the removal of his sin will be this (note: LXX Therefore the guilt of Jacob will be taken away, and this is his blessing when I take away his sin; cited in Romans 11:27): When he makes all the altar stones like crushed bits of chalk, no Asherah poles or incense altars will remain standing.
Civitas enim munita desolata erit ; speciosa relinquetur, et dimittetur quasi desertum ; ibi pascetur vitulus, et ibi accubabit, et consumet summitates ejus.
For the fortified city lies deserted—a homestead abandoned, a wilderness forsaken. There the calves graze, and there they lie down; they strip its branches bare.
In siccitate messes illius conterentur. Mulieres venientes, et docentes eam ; non est enim populus sapiens : propterea non miserebitur ejus qui fecit eum, et qui formavit eum non parcet ei.
When its limbs are dry, they are broken off. Women come and use them for kindling; for this is a people without understanding. Therefore their Maker has no compassion on them, and their Creator shows them no favor.
Et erit : in die illa percutiet Dominus ab alveo fluminis usque ad torrentem Ægypti ; et vos congregabimini unus et unus, filii Israël.
In that day the LORD will thresh from the flowing Euphrates (note: Hebrew River) to the Wadi of Egypt, and you, O Israelites, will be gathered one by one.
Et erit : in die illa clangetur in tuba magna ; et venient qui perditi fuerant de terra Assyriorum, et qui ejecti erant in terra Ægypti, et adorabunt Dominum in monte sancto in Jerusalem.
And in that day a great ram’s horn will sound, and those who were perishing in Assyria will come forth with those who were exiles in Egypt. And they will worship the LORD on the holy mountain in Jerusalem.
