Hosea 13

Jewish Publication Society 1917 · Berean Standard Bible

When Ephraim spoke, there was trembling, He exalted himself in Israel; But when he became guilty through Baal, he died.
When Ephraim (note: That is, the northern kingdom of Israel; also in verse 12) spoke, there was trembling; he was exalted in Israel. But he incurred guilt through Baal, and he died.
And now they sin more and more, And have made them molten images of their silver, According to their own understanding, even idols, All of them the work of the craftsmen; Of them they say: ‘They that sacrifice men kiss calves.’
Now they sin more and more and make for themselves cast images, idols skillfully made from their silver, all of them the work of craftsmen. People say of them, “They offer human sacrifice and kiss the calves (note: Or “The men who sacrifice kiss the calves!” See 1 Kings 19:18.)!”
Therefore they shall be as the morning cloud, And as the dew that early passeth away, As the chaff that is driven with the wind out of the threshing-floor, And as the smoke out of the window.
Therefore they will be like the morning mist, like the early dew that vanishes, like chaff blown from a threshing floor, like smoke through an open window.
Yet I am the LORD thy God From the land of Egypt; And thou knowest no God but Me, And beside Me there is no saviour.
Yet I am the LORD your God ever since the land of Egypt; you know no God but Me, for there is no Savior besides Me.
I did know thee in the wilderness, In the land of great drought.
I knew you in the wilderness, in the land of drought.
When they were fed, they became full, They were filled, and their heart was exalted; Therefore have they forgotten Me.
When they had pasture, they became satisfied; when they were satisfied, their hearts became proud, and as a result they forgot Me.
Therefore am I become unto them as a lion; As a leopard will I watch by the way;
So like a lion I will pounce on them; like a leopard I will lurk by the path.
I will meet them as a bear that is bereaved of her whelps, And will rend the enclosure of their heart; And there will I devour them like a lioness; The wild beast shall tear them.
Like a bear robbed of her cubs I will attack them, and I will tear open their chests. There I will devour them like a lion, like a wild beast tearing them apart.
It is thy destruction, O Israel, That thou art against Me, against thy help.
You are destroyed, O Israel, because you are against Me—against your helper.
Ho, now, thy king, That he may save thee in all thy cities! And thy judges, of whom thou saidst: ‘Give me a king and princes! ’
Where is your king now (note: Or Shall I be your King now) to save you in all your cities, and the rulers to whom you said, “Give me a king and princes”?
I give thee a king in Mine anger, And take him away in My wrath.
So in My anger I gave you a king, and in My wrath I took him away.
The iniquity of Ephraim is bound up; His sin is laid up in store.
The iniquity of Ephraim is bound up; his sin is stored up.
The throes of a travailing woman shall come upon him; He is an unwise son; For it is time he should not tarry In the place of the breaking forth of children.
Labor pains come upon him, but he is an unwise son. When the time arrives, he fails to present himself at the opening of the womb.
Shall I ransom them from the power of the nether-world? Shall I redeem them from death? Ho, thy plagues, O death! Ho, thy destruction, O netherworld! Repentance be hid from Mine eyes!
I will ransom them from the power of Sheol; I will redeem them from Death (note: Or Shall I ransom them from the power of Sheol? Shall I redeem them from Death?). Where, O Death, are your plagues? Where, O Sheol, is your sting (note: LXX Where, O Death, is your penalty? Where, O Hades, is your sting? Cited in 1 Corinthians 15:55)? Compassion is hidden from My eyes.
For though he be fruitful among the reed-plants, An east wind shall come, the wind of the LORD coming up from the wilderness, And his spring shall become dry, and his fountain shall be dried up; He shall spoil the treasure of all precious vessels.
Although he flourishes among his brothers, an east wind will come—a wind from the LORD rising up from the desert. His fountain will fail, and his spring will run dry. The wind will plunder his treasury of every precious article.
