Προσθέμενος δὲ Ἀβραὰμ ἔλαβεν γυναῖκα ᾗ ὄνομα Χεττούρα.
Now Abraham had taken another wife, named Keturah,
ἔτεκεν δὲ αὐτῷ τὸν Ζεβρὰν καὶ τὸν Ἰεξὰν καὶ τὸν τὸν καὶ τὸν Μαδιάμ καὶ τὸν Ἰεσβὸκ καὶ τὸν Σωύε.
and she bore him Zimran, Jokshan, Medan, Midian, Ishbak, and Shuah.
Ἰεξάν δὲ ἐγέννησεν τὸν Σαβᾶν καὶ τὸν Θαιμὰν καὶ τὸν Δαιδάν· υἱοὶ δὲ Δαιδὰν ἐγένοντο Ῥαγουὴλ καὶ Ναβδεὴλ καὶ Ἀσουρὶμ καὶ Λατουσιεὶμ καὶ Λοωμείμ·
Jokshan was the father of Sheba and Dedan. And the sons of Dedan were the Asshurites, the Letushites, and the Leummites.
υἱοὶ δὲ Μαδιὰμ Γεφὰρ καὶ Ἄφερ καὶ Ἑνὼχ καὶ Ἀβιρὰ καὶ Θεργαμά. οὗτοι πάντες ἦσαν υἱοὶ Χεττούρας.
The sons of Midian were Ephah, Epher, Hanoch, Abida, and Eldaah. All these were descendants of Keturah.
ἔδωκεν δὲ Ἀβραὰμ πάντα τὰ ὑπάρχοντα αὐτοῦ Ἰσαὰκ τῷ υἱῷ αὐτοῦ·
Abraham left everything he owned to Isaac.
καὶ τοῖς υἱοῖς τῶν παλλακῶν αὐτοῦ ἔδωκεν Ἀβραὰμ δόματα, καὶ ἐξαπέστειλεν αὐτοὺς ἀπὸ Ἰσαὰκ τοῦ υἱοῦ αὐτοῦ ἔτι ζῶντος αὐτοῦ πρὸς ἀνατολὰς εἰς γῆν ἀνατολῶν.
But while he was still alive, Abraham gave gifts to the sons of his concubines and sent them away from his son Isaac to the land of the east.
ταῦτα δὲ τὰ ἔτη ἡμερῶν ζωῆς Ἀβραὰμ ὅσα ἔζησεν, ἑκατὸν ἑβσομήκοντα πέντε ἔτη·
Abraham lived a total of 175 years.
καὶ ἐκλείπων ἀπέθανεν Ἀβραὰμ ἐν γήρει καλῷ πρεσκαὶ πλήρης ἡμερῶν, καὶ προσετέθη πρὸς τὸν λαὸν αὐτοῦ.
And at a ripe old age he breathed his last and died, old and contented, and was gathered to his people.
καὶ ν αὐτὸν Ἰσαὰκ καὶ Ἰσμαὴλ οἱ δύο υἱοὶ αὐτοῦ εἰς τὸ σπήλαιον τὸ διπλοῦν, εἰς τὸν ἀγρὸν Ἐφρὼν τοῦ Σάαρ τοῦ ετταίου, ὅ ἐστιν ἀπέναντι Μαμβρή,
His sons Isaac and Ishmael buried him in the cave of Machpelah near Mamre, in the field of Ephron son of Zohar the Hittite.
τὸν ἀγρὸν καὶ τὸ σπήλαιον ὃ ἐκτήσατο Ἀβραὰμ παρὰ τῶν υἱῶν Χέτ· ἐκεῖ ἔθαψαν Ἀβραὰμ καὶ Σάρραν τὴν αὐτοῦ.
This was the field that Abraham had bought from the Hittites. Abraham was buried there with his wife Sarah.
ἐγένετο δὲ μετὰ τὸ ἀποθανεῖν Ἀβραὰμ εὐλόγησεν ὁ θεὸς τὸν Ἰσαὰκ τὸν υἱὸν αὐτοῦ· καὶ κατῲκησεν Ἰσαὰκ παρὰ τὸ φρέαρ τῆς
After Abraham’s death, God blessed his son Isaac, who lived near Beer-lahai-roi.
Αὗται δὲ αἱ γενέσεις Ἰσμαὴλ τοῦ υἱοῦ Ἀβραάμ, ὃν Ἁγὰρ ἡ παιδίσκη Σάρρας τῷ Ἀβραάμ.
This is the account of Abraham’s son Ishmael, whom Hagar the Egyptian, Sarah’s maidservant, bore to Abraham.
καὶ ταῦτα τὰ ὀνόματα σμαὴλ κατ’ ὄνομα τῶν γενεῶν αὐτοῦ· πρωτότοκος Ἱσμαὴλ Ναβαιώθ, καὶ Κηδὰρ καὶ Ναβδεὴλ καὶ ασσὰμ
These are the names of the sons of Ishmael in the order of their birth: Nebaioth the firstborn of Ishmael, then Kedar, Adbeel, Mibsam,
καὶ Χοδδὰν καὶ Θαιμὰν καὶ Ἰετοὺρ καὶ Ναφὲς καὶ Κέδμα.
Hadad, Tema, Jetur, Naphish, and Kedemah.
οὗτοί εἰσιν οἱ υἱοὶ Ἰσμαήλ, καὶ ταῦτα τὰ ὀνόματα αὐτῶν ἐν ταῖς σκηναῖς αὐτῶν καὶ ἐν ταῖς ἐπαύλεσιν αὐτῶν· δώδεκα ἄρχοντες κατὰ ἔθνος αὐτῶν.
These were the sons of Ishmael, and these were their names by their villages and encampments—twelve princes of their tribes.
καὶ ταῦτα τὰ ἔτη τῆς ζωῆς Ἰσμαήλ, ἑκατὸν τριάκοντα ἑπτὰ ἔτη· καὶ ἐκλείπων ἀπέθανεν καὶ προσετέθη πρὸς τὸ γένος αὐτοῦ.
Ishmael lived a total of 137 years. Then he breathed his last and died, and was gathered to his people.
κατῴκησεν δὲ ἀπὸ Εὑειλὰτ ἕως Σουήλ, ἥ ἐστιν κατὰ πρόσωπον Αἰγύπτου ἕως ἐλθεῖν πρὸς Ἀσσυρίους· κατὰ πρόσωπον πάντων τῶν ἀδελφῶν αὐτοῦ κατῴκησεν.
Ishmael’s descendants settled from Havilah to Shur, which is near the border of Egypt as you go toward Asshur (note: Or Assyria). And they lived in hostility toward all their brothers.
αὗται αἱ γενέσεις τοῦ υἱοῦ Ἀβραάμ· Ἀβραὰμ ἐγέννησεν τὸν Ἰσαάκ.
This is the account of Abraham’s son Isaac. Abraham became the father of Isaac,
ἦν δὲ ἐτῶν τεσσεράκοντα ὅτε ἔλαβεν τὴν Ῥεβέκκαν θυγατέρα Βαθουὴλ τοῦ Σύρου ἐκ τῆς Μεσοποταμίας, ἀδελφὴν Λαβὰν τοῦ Σύρου, ἑαυτῷ γυναῖκα.
and Isaac was forty years old when he married Rebekah, the daughter of Bethuel the Aramean from Paddan-aram (note: That is, northwest Mesopotamia) and the sister of Laban the Aramean.
ἐδεῖτο δὲ Ἰσαὰκ κυρίου περὶ Ῥεβέκκας τῆς γυναικὸς αὐτοῦ, ὅτι στεῖρα ἦν. ἐπήκουσεν δὲ αὐτοῦ ὁ θεός, καὶ ἔλαβεν ἐν γαστρὶ Ῥεβέκκα ἡ αὐτοῦ.
Later, Isaac prayed to the LORD on behalf of his wife, because she was barren. And the LORD heard his prayer, and his wife Rebekah conceived.
ἐσκίρτων δὲ τὰ παιδία ἐν αὐτῇ· εἶπεν δέ Εἰ οὕτως μοι γίνεσθαι, ἵνα τί μοι τοῦτο ; ἐπορεύθη δὲ πυθέσθαι παρὰ Κυρίου.
But the children inside her struggled with each other, and she said, “Why is this happening to me?” So Rebekah went to inquire of the LORD,
καὶ εἶπεν κύριος αὐτῇ Δύο ἔθνη ἐν τῇ γαστρί σού εἰσιν, καὶ δύο λαοὶ ἐκ τῆς κοιλίας σου διασταλήσονται· καὶ λαὸς λαοῦ ὑπερέξει, καὶ ὁ μείζων δουλεύσει τῷ ἐλάσσονι.
and He declared to her: “Two nations are in your womb, and two peoples from within you will be separated; one people will be stronger than the other, and the older will serve the younger (note: Cited in Romans 9:12).”
καὶ ἐπληρώθησαν αἱ ἡμέραι τοῦ τεκεῖν αὐτήν· καὶ τῇδε ἦν δίδυμα τῇ γαστρὶ αὐτῆς.
When her time came to give birth, there were indeed twins in her womb.
ἐξῆλθεν δὲ ὁ υἱὸς ὁ πρωτότοκος πυρράκης, ὅ ὡσεὶ δορὰ δασύς· ἐπωνόμασεν δὲ τὸ ὄνομα αὐτοῦ Ἡσαύ.
The first one came out red, covered with hair like a fur coat; so they named him Esau (note: Esau sounds like a Hebrew term that means hairy.).
καὶ μετὰ τοῦτο ἐξῆλθεν ὁ ἀδελφὸς αὐτοῦ, καὶ ἡ χεὶρ αὐτοῦ ἐπειλημμένη τῆς πτέρνης Ἠσαύ· καὶ ἐκάλεσεν τὸ ὄνομα αὐτοῦ Ἰακώβ. Ἰσαὰκ δὲ ἦν ἐτῶν ἑξήκοντα ὅτε ἐγέννησεν αὐτοὺς Ῥεβέκκα.
After this, his brother came out grasping Esau’s heel; so he was named Jacob (note: Jacob means he grasps the heel or he deceives.). And Isaac was sixty years old when the twins were born.
ηὐξήθησαν δὲ οἱ νεανίσκοι. καὶ ἦν Ἠσαὺ ἄνθρωπος εἰδὼς κυνηγεῖν, ἄγροικος· Ἰακὼβ δὲ ἦν ἄνθρωπος ἄπλαστος, οἰκῶν οἰκίαν.
When the boys grew up, Esau became a skillful hunter, a man of the field, while Jacob was a quiet man who stayed at home.
ἠγάπησεν δὲ Ἰσαὰκ τὸν Ἠσαύ, ὅτι ἡ θήρα αὐτοῦ βρῶσις αὐτῷ· Ῥεβέκκα δὲ ἠγάπα τὸν Ἰακώβ.
Because Isaac had a taste for wild game, he loved Esau; but Rebekah loved Jacob.
Ἥχηαεν δὲ Ἰακὼβ ἕψεμα· ἦλθεν δὲ Ἠσαὺ ἐκ τοῦ πεδίου ἐκλείπων.
One day, while Jacob was cooking some stew, Esau came in from the field and was famished.
καὶ εἶπεν Ἠσαὺ τῷ Ἰακώβ Γεῦσόν με ἀπὸ τοῦ ἑψέματος τοῦ πυρροῦ τούτου, ὅτι ἐκλείπω ἐγώ· διὰ τοῦτο ἐκλήθη τὸ ὄνομα αὐτοῦ Ἐδώμ.
He said to Jacob, “Let me eat some of that red stew, for I am famished.” (That is why he was also called Edom (note: Edom means red.).)
εἶπεν δὲ Ἰακὼβτῷ Ἠσαύ Ἀπόδου μοι σήμερον τὰ πρωτοτοκεῖά σου ἐμοί.
“First sell me your birthright,” Jacob replied.
εἶπεν δὲ Ἠσαύ Ἰδοὺ ἐγὼ πορεύομαι τελευτᾷν, καἰ ἵνα τί μοι ταῦτα τὰ πρωτοτοκεῖα ;
“Look,” said Esau, “I am about to die, so what good is a birthright to me?”
καὶ εἶπεν αὐτῷ Ἰακώβ μοι σήμερον. καὶ ὤμοσεν αὐτῷ· ἀπέδοτο δὲ Ἠσαὺ τὰ πρωτοτῷ Ἰακώβ.
“Swear to me first,” Jacob said. So Esau swore to Jacob and sold him the birthright.
Ἰακὼβ δὲ ἔδωκεν τῷ Ἠσαὺ ἄρτον καὶ ἕψεμα φακοῦ· καὶ ἔφαγεν καὶ ἔπειεν, καὶ ἀναστὰς ᾤχετο· καὶ ἐφαύλισεν Ἠεσὺ τὰ π ρωτοτοκεῖα.
Then Jacob gave some bread and lentil stew to Esau, who ate and drank and then got up and went away. Thus Esau despised his birthright.
