Υἱὲ ἀνθρώπου, δύο γυναῖκες ἦσαν θυγατέρες μητρὸς μιᾶς, 3καὶ ἐξεπόρνευσαν ἐν Αἰγύπτῳ ἐν τῇ νεότητι αὐτῶν, ἐκεῖ ἔπεσον οἱ μαστοὶ αὐτῶν, ἐκεῖ διεπαρθενεύθησαν.
“Son of man, there were two women, daughters of the same mother,
καὶ τὰ ὀνόματα αὐτῶν ἦν Ὄολλα ἡ πρεσβυτέρα, καὶ Ὀόλιβα ἡ ἀδελφὴ αὐτῆς. καὶ ἐγένοντό μοι, καὶ ἔτεκον υἱοὺς καὶ θυγατέρας· καὶ τὰ ὀνόματα αὐτῶν, Σαμάρεια ἦν Ὄολλα, καὶ Ἰερουσαλὴμ ἦν Ὀόλιβα.
The older was named Oholah (note: Oholah means her own tent or she worships at a tent shrine, a metaphor for Samaria as an adulteress with Assyria.), and her sister was named Oholibah. They became Mine and gave birth to sons and daughters. As for their identities, Oholah is Samaria, and Oholibah is Jerusalem.
καὶ ἐξεπόρνευσεν ἡ Ὄολα ἀπʼ ἐμοῦ καὶ ἐπέ. θετο ἐπὶ τοὺς ἐραστὰς αὐτῆς, ἐπὶ τοὺς Ἀσσυρίους τοὺς ἐγγίζοντας αὐτῇ,
Oholah prostituted herself while she was still Mine. She lusted after her lovers, the Assyrians—warriors
ἐνδεδυκότας ὑακίνθινα, ἡγουμένους καὶ στρατηγούς· νεανίσκοι καὶ ἐπίλεκτοι, πάντες ἱππεῖς ἱππαζόμενοι ἐφʼ ἵππων.
clothed in blue, governors and commanders, all desirable young men, horsemen mounted on steeds.
καὶ ἔδωκεν τὴν πορνείαν αὐτῆς ἐπʼ αὐτοὺς· ἐπίλεκτοι υἱοὶ Ἀσσυρίων πάντες, καὶ ἐπὶ πάντας οὓς ἐπέθετο, ἐν πᾶσι τοῖς ἐυθυμήμασιν αὐτῆς ἐμιαίνετο.
She offered sexual favors to all the elite of Assyria. She defiled herself with all the idols of those for whom she lusted.
καὶ τὴν πορνείαν αὐτῆς ἐξ Αἰγύπτου οὐκ ἐνκατέλιπεν, ὅτι μετʼ αὐτῆς ἐκοιμῶντο ἐν νεότητι αὐτῆς, καὶ αὐτοὶ διεπαρθένευσαν αὐτὴν καὶ ἐξέχεαν τὴν πορνείαν αὐτῶν ἐπʼ αὐτήυ.
She did not give up the prostitution she began in Egypt, when men slept with her in her youth, caressed her virgin bosom, and poured out their lust upon her.
διὰ τοῦτο παρέδωκα αὐτὴν εἰς χεῖρας τῶν ἐραστῶν αὐτῆς, εἰς χεῖρας υἱῶν Ἀσσυῥίων ἐφʼ σὓς ἐπετίθετο.
Therefore I delivered her into the hands of her lovers, the Assyrians for whom she lusted.
αὐτοὶ ἀπεκάλυψαν τὴν αἰσχύνην αὐτῆς, υἱοὺς καὶ θυγατέρας αὐτῆς ἔλαβον, καὶ αὐτὴν ἐν ῥομφαίᾳ ἀπέκτειναν· καὶ ἐγένετο λάλημα εἰς γυναῖκας, καὶ ἐκδικήσεις ἐποίησαν ἐν αὐτῇ εἰς τὰς θυγατέρας.
They exposed her nakedness, seized her sons and daughters, and put her to the sword. Thus she became a byword among women, and they executed judgment against her.
καὶ ἴδεν ἡ ἀδελφὴ αὐτῆς Ὀόλιβα, καὶ διέφθειρε τὴν ἐπίθεσιν αὐτῆς ὑπέρ αὐτήν, καὶ τὴν πορνείαν αὐτῆς ὑπέρ τὴν πορνείαν τῆς ἀδελφῆς αὐτῆς·
Her sister Oholibah saw this, yet in her lust and prostitution she was more depraved than her sister.
ἐπὶ τοὺς υἷρὺς τῶν Ἀσσυρίων ἐπέθετο ἡγουμένους καὶ στρατηγοὺς τοὺς ἐγγὺς αὐτῆς, ἐνδεδυ. κοτας εὐπάρυφα, ἱππεῖς ἱππαζομένους ἐφʼ ἵππων· νεανίσκοι ἐπίλεκτοι πάντες.
She too lusted after the Assyrians—governors and commanders, warriors dressed in splendor, horsemen riding on steeds, all desirable young men.
καὶ ἴδον ὅτι μεμίανται ὁδὸς μία τῶν δύο.
And I saw that she too had defiled herself; both of them had taken the same path.
καὶ προσέθετο πρὸς τὴν πορνείαν αὐτῆς, καὶ ἴδεν ἄνδρας ἐζωγραφημένους ἐπὶ τοῦ τοίχου, εἰκόνας Χαλδαίων, ἐζωγραφημένους ἐν γραφίδι,
But Oholibah carried her prostitution even further. She saw the men portrayed on the wall, images of the Chaldeans (note: That is, the Babylonians), engraved in vermilion,
ἐζωσμένους ποικίλματα ἐπὶ τὰς ὀσφύας αὐτῶν παραβαπτὰ καὶ ἐπὶ τῶν κεφαλῶν αὐτῶν, ὄψις τρισσὴ πάντων, ὁμοίωμα υἱῶν Χαλδαίων, γῆς πατρίδος αὐτοῦ.
wearing belts on their waists and flowing turbans on their heads; all of them looked like officers of the Babylonians in Chaldea (note: Or Babylonia; also in verse 16), the land of their birth.
καὶ ἐπέθετο ἐπʼ αὐτοὺς τῇ ὁράσει ὀφθαλμῶν αὐτῆς, καὶ ἐξαπέστειλεν ἀγγέλους πρὸς αὐτοὺς εἰς γῆν Χαλδαίων.
At the sight of them, she lusted for them and sent messengers to them in Chaldea.
καὶ ἤλθοσαν πρὸς αὐτὴν υἱοὶ Βαβυλῶνος, εἰς κοίτην καταλυόντων, καὶ ἐμίαινον αὐτὴν ἐν τῇ πορνείᾳ αὐτῆς, καὶ ἐμιάνθη ἐν αὐτοῖς, καὶ ἀπέστη ἡ ψυχὴ αὐτῆς ἀπʼ αὐτῶν.
Then the Babylonians came to her, to the bed of love, and in their lust they defiled her. But after she had been defiled by them, she turned away in disgust.
καὶ ἀπεκάλυψεν τὴν πορνείαν αὐτῆς, καὶ ἀπεκάλυψεν αἰσχύνην αὐτῆς· καὶ ἀπέστη ἡ ψυχὴ μου ἀπʼ αὐτῆς, ὃν τρόπον ἀπέστη ἡ ψυχὴ μου ἀπὸ τῆς ἀδελφῆς αὐτῆς.
When Oholibah openly prostituted herself and exposed her nakedness, I turned away from her in disgust, just as I had turned away from her sister.
καὶ ἐπλήθυνας τὴν πορνείαν σου τοῦ ἀναμνῆσαι ἡμέραν νεότητός σου ἐν αἷς ἐπόρνευσας ἐν Αἰγύπτῳ,
Yet she multiplied her promiscuity, remembering the days of her youth, when she had prostituted herself in the land of Egypt
καὶ ἐπέθου ἐπὶ τοὺς Χαλδαίους, ὧν ὡς ὄνων αἱ σάρκες αὐτῶν, καὶ αἰδοῖκ ἵππων τὰ αἰδοῖα αὐτῶν,
and lusted after their lovers, whose genitals were like those of donkeys and whose emission was like that of stallions.
καὶ ἐπεσκέψω τὴν ἀνομίαν νεότητός σου, ἃ ἐποίεις ἐν Αἰγύπτῳ ἐν τῷ καταλύματί σου, οὗ οἱ μαστοὶ νεότητός σου.
So you revisited the indecency of your youth, when the Egyptians caressed your bosom and pressed your young breasts.
Διὰ τοῦτο, Ὀόλιβα, τάδε λέγει Κύριος Ἰδοὺ ἐγὼ ἐξεγείρω τοὺς ἐραστάς σου ἐπὶ σέ, ἀφʼ ὧν ἀπέστη ἡ ψυχή σου ἀπʼ αὐτῶν, καὶ ἐπάξω αὐτοὺς ἐπὶ σὲ κυκλόθεν,
Therefore, Oholibah, this is what the Lord GOD says: ‘I will incite your lovers against you, those from whom you turned away in disgust. And I will bring them against you from every side—
υἱοὺς Βαβυλῶνος καὶ πάντας τοὺς Χαλδαίους, Φακοὺκ καὶ Σοῦε καὶ Ὑχοῦε, καὶ πάντας υἱοὺς Ἀσσυρίων μετʼ αὐτῶν, νεανίσκους ἐπιλέκτους, ἡγεμόνας καὶ στρατηγούς, πάντας τρισσοὺς καὶ ὀνομαστούς, ἱππεύοντας ἐφʼ ἴππων.
the Babylonians and all the Chaldeans, the men of Pekod, Shoa, and Koa, and all the Assyrians with them—all desirable young men, governors and commanders, officers and men of renown, mounted on horses.
καὶ πάντες ἥξουσιν ἐπὶ σέ ἀπὸ βορρᾶ, ἄρματα καὶ τροχοὶ μετʼ ὄχλου λαῶν, θυρεοὶ καὶ πέλται, καὶ βαλεῖ φυλακὴν ἐπὶ σὲ κύκλῳ.
They will come against you with a host of peoples (note: LXX They will all come against you from the north), with weapons, chariots, and wagons. They will array themselves against you on every side with buckler and shield and helmet. I will delegate judgment to them, and they will punish you according to their own standards.
καὶ δώσω πρὸ προσώπου αὐτῶν κρίμα, καὶ ἐκδικήσουσίν σε ἐν τοῖς κρίμασιν αὐτῶν· καὶ δώσω τὸν ζῆλόν μου ἐν σοί, καὶ ποιήσουσιν μετὰ σοῦ ἐν ὀργῆ θυμοῦ· μυκτῆράς σου καὶ ὦτά σου ἀφελοῦσιν, καὶ τοὺς καταλοίπους σου ἐν ῥομφαίᾳ καταβαλοῦσιν. αὐτοὶ υἱούς σου καὶ θυγατέρας σου λήμψονται, καὶ τοὺς καταλοίπους σου πῦρ καταφάγεται·
And I will set My jealous rage against you, and they will deal with you in fury. They will cut off your noses and ears, and your survivors will fall by the sword. They will seize your sons and daughters, and your remnant will be consumed by fire.
καὶ ἐκδύσουσίν σε τὸν ἱματισμόν σου, καὶ λήμψονται τὰ σκεύη τῆς καυχήσεως σου.
They will strip off your clothes and take your fine jewelry.
καὶ ἀποστρέψω τὰς ἀσεβείας σου ἐκ σοῦ καὶ τὴν πορνείαν σου ἐκ γῆς Αἰγύπτου, καὶ οὐ μὴ ἄρῃς τοὺς ὀφθαλμούς σου ἐπʼ αὐτούς, καὶ Αἰγύπτου οὐ μὴ μνησθῇς οὐκέτι
So I will put an end to your indecency and prostitution, which began in the land of Egypt, and you will not lift your eyes to them or remember Egypt anymore.’
διότι τάδε λέγει κύριος Κύριος Ἰδοὺ ἐγὼ παραδίδωμί σε εἰς χεῖρας ὧν μισεῖς, ἀφʼ ὧν ἀπέστη ἡ ψυχὴ σου ἀπʼ οὐτῶν·
For this is what the Lord GOD says: ‘Surely I will deliver you into the hands of those you hate, from whom you turned away in disgust.
καὶ ποιήσουσιν ἐν σοὶ ἐν μίσει, καὶ λήμψονται πάντας τοὺς πόνους σου καὶ τοὺς μόχθους σου, καὶ ἔσῃ γυμνὴ καὶ αἰσχύνουσα, καὶ ἀποκαλυφθήσεται αἰσχύνη πορνείας σου καὶ ἀσέβειά σου. καὶ ἡ πορνεία σου
They will treat you with hatred, take all for which you have worked, and leave you naked and bare, so that the shame of your prostitution will be exposed. Your indecency and promiscuity
ἐποίησεν ταῦτά σοι, ἐν τῷ ἐκπορνεῦσαί σε ὀπίσω ἐθνῶν, καὶ ἐμιαίνου ἐν τοῖς ἐνθυμήμασιν αὐτῶν.
have brought these things upon you, because you have prostituted yourself with the nations and defiled yourself with their idols.
ἐυ τῇ ὁδῷ τῆς ἀδελφῆς σου ἐπορεύθης, καὶ δώσω τὸ ποτήριον αὐτῆς εἰς χεῖράς σου.
Because you have followed the path of your sister, I will put her cup into your hand.’
τάδε λέγει Κύριος Τὸ ποτήριον τῆς ἀδελφῆς σου πίεσαι, τὸ βαθὺ καὶ τὸ πλατὺ καὶ τὸ πλεονάζον τοῦ συντελέσαι μέθην,
This is what the Lord GOD says: ‘You will drink your sister’s cup, a cup deep and wide. It will bring scorn and derision, for it holds so much.
καὶ ἐκλύσεως πλησθήσῃ· καὶ τὸ ποτήριον ἀφανισμοῦ ποτήριον ἀδελφῆς σου,
You will be filled with drunkenness and grief, with a cup of devastation and desolation, the cup of your sister Samaria.
καὶ πίεσαι αὐτό, καὶ τὰς ἑορτὰς καὶ τὰς νεομηνίας αὐτῆς ἀποστρέψω· διότι ἐγὼ λελάληκα, λέγει Κύριος.
You will drink it and drain it; you will dash it to pieces, and tear your breasts. For I have spoken,’ declares the Lord GOD.
διὰ τοῦτο τάδε λέγει Κύριος Ἀνθʼ ὧν ἐπελάθου μου καὶ ἀπέρριψάς με ὀπίσω τοῦ σώματός σου, καὶ σὺ λάβε τὴν ἀσέβειάν σου καὶ τὴν πορνείαν σου.
Therefore this is what the Lord GOD says: ‘Because you have forgotten Me and have cast Me behind your back, you must bear the consequences of your indecency and prostitution.’”
Καὶ εἶπεν Κύριος πρὸς μέ Υἱὲ ἀνθρώπου, οὐ κρινεῖς τὴν Ὄολαν καὶ τὴν Ὄλιβαν καὶ ἀναγγελεῖς αὐταῖς τὰς ἀνομίας αὐτῶν,
Then the LORD said to me: “Son of man, will you pass judgment against Oholah and Oholibah? Then declare to them their abominations.
ὅτι ἐμοιχῶντο, καὶ αἶμα ἐν χερσὶν αὐτῶν· τὰ ἐνθυμήματα αὐτῶν ἐμοιχῶντο, καὶ τὰ τέκνα αὐτῶν ἂ ἐγέννησάν μοι διήγαγον αὐτοῖς δι᾿ ἐμπύρων.
For they have committed adultery, and blood is on their hands. They have committed adultery with their idols. They have even sacrificed their children, whom they bore to Me, in the fire (note: Literally passed their children, whom they bore to Me, through the fire) as food for their idols.
ἕως καὶ ταῦτα ἐποίησάν μοι, τὰ ἅγιά μου ἐμίαινον καὶ τὰ σάββατά μου ἐβεβήλουν,
They have also done this to Me: On that very same day, they defiled My sanctuary and profaned My Sabbaths.
καὶ ἐν τῷ σφάζειν οὐ τοὺς τὰ τέκνα αὐτῶν τοῖς εἰδώλοις αὐτῶν, καὶ εἰσεπορεύοντο εἰς τὰ ἅγιά μου τοῦ βεβηλοῦν αὐτά. καὶ ὅτι οὕτως ἐποίουν ἐν μέσῳ τοῦ οἴκου μου,
On the very day they slaughtered their children for their idols, they entered My sanctuary to profane it. Yes, they did this inside My house.
καὶ ὅτι τοῖς ἀνδράσιν τοῖς ἐρχομένοις μακρόθεν, οἷς ἀγγέλους ἐξαπέστελλον πρὸς αὐτούς, καὶ ἄμα τῷ ἔρχεσθαι αὐτοὺς εὐθὺς ἐλούου καὶ ἐστιβίζου τοὺς ὀφθαλμούς σου καὶ ἐκόσμου κόσμῳ,
Furthermore, you sisters sent (note: Hebrew they sent) messengers for men who came from afar; and behold, when they arrived, you bathed for them, painted your eyes, and adorned yourself with jewelry.
καὶ ἐκάθου ἐπὶ κλίνης ἐστρωμένης, καὶ τράπεζα κεκοσμημένη πρὸ προσώπου αὐτῆς. καὶ τὸ θυμίαμα καὶ τὸ ἔλαιόν μου εὐφραίνοντο ἐν αὐτοῖς,
You sat on a couch of luxury with a table spread before it, on which you had set My incense and My oil,
καὶ φωνὴν ἁρμονίας ἀνεκρούοντο, καὶ πρὸς ἄνδρας ἐκ πλήθους ἀνθρώπων ἥκοντας ἐκ τῆς ἐρήμου· καὶ ἐδίδοσαν ψέλια ἐπὶ τὰς χεῖρας αὐτῶν καὶ στέφανον καυχήσεως ἐπὶ τὰς κεφαλὰς αὐτῶν.
accompanied by the sound of a carefree crowd. Drunkards (note: Or Sabeans) were brought in from the desert along with men from the rabble, who put bracelets on your wrists and beautiful crowns on your head.
καὶ εἶπα Οὐκ ἐν τούτοις μοιχεύουσιν; καὶ ἔργα πόρνης καὶ αὐτὴ ἐξεπόρνευσεν·
Then I said of her who had grown old in adulteries: ‘Now let them use her as a prostitute, for that is all she is!’
καὶ εἰσεπορεύοντο πρὸς αὐτήν, ὃν τρόπον εἰσπορεύονται πρὸς γυναῖκα πόρνην, οὕτως εἰσεπορεύοντο πρὸς Ὄολαν καὶ πρὸς Ὀόλιβαν τοῦ ποιῆσαι ἀνομίαν.
And they slept with her as with a prostitute; they slept with Oholah and Oholibah, those lewd women.
καὶ ἄνδρες δίκαιοι αὐτοὶ καὶ ἐκδικήσουσιν αὐτὰς ἐκδικήσει μοιχαλίδος καὶ ἐκδικήσει αἵματος, ὅτι μοιχαλίδες εἰσίν, καὶ αἶμα ἐν χερσὶν αὐτῶν.
But righteous men will sentence them to the punishment of those who commit adultery and bloodshed, because they are adulteresses with blood on their hands.
τάδε λέγει κύριος Κύριος Ἀνάγαγε ἐπʼ αὐτὰς ὄχλον, καὶ δὸς ἐν αὐταῖς ταραχὴν καὶ διαρπαγήν,
This is what the Lord GOD says: ‘Bring a mob against them and consign them to terror and plunder.
καὶ λιθοβόλησον ἐπʼ αὐτὰς λίθοις ὄχλων, καὶ κατακέντει αὐτὰς ἐν τοῖς ξίφεσιν αὐτῶν· υἱοὺς αὐτῶν καὶ θυγατέρας αὐτῶν ἀποκτενοῦσι, καὶ τοὺς οἴκους αὐτῶν ἐνπρήσουσιν.
The mob will stone them and cut them down with their swords. They will kill their sons and daughters and burn down their houses.
καὶ ἀποστρέψω ἀσέβειαν ἐκ τῆς γῆς, καὶ παιδευθήσονται πᾶσαι αἱ γυναῖκες καὶ οὐ μὴ ποιήσουσιν κατὰ τὰς ἀσεβείας αὐτῶν.
So I will put an end to indecency in the land, and all the women will be admonished not to imitate your behavior.
καὶ δοθήσεται ἡ ἀσέβεια ὑμῶν ἐφʼ ὑμᾶς, καὶ τὰς ἁμαρτίας τῶν ἐνθυμημάτων ὑμῶν λήμψεσθε· καὶ γνώσεσθε διότι ἐγὼ Κύριος.
They will repay you for your indecency, and you will bear the consequences of your sins of idolatry. Then you will know that I am the Lord GOD.’”
