2:1
Ἦν δέ τις ἐκ τῆς φυλῆς Λευεὶ ὃς ἔλαβεν τῶν θυγατέρων
Now a man of the house of Levi married a Levite woman,
2:2
καὶ ἐν γαστρὶ ἔλαβεν καὶ ἔτεκεν ἄρσεν· ἰδόντες δὲ αὐτὸ ἐσκέπασαν αὐτὸ μῆνας τρεῖς.
and she conceived and gave birth to a son. When she saw that he was a beautiful child, she hid him for three months.
2:3
ἐπεὶ δὲ οὐκ ἠδύναντο αὐτὸ ἔτι αὐτῷ η μήτηρ αὐτοῦ ἱν κα κατέχρισεν ἀυτὴν ἀσφαλτοπίσσῃ καὶ ἐνέβαλεν τὸ παιδίον εἰς αὐτήν, καὶ ἔθηκεν αὐτὴν εἰς τὸ ἕλος παρὰ τὸν ποταμόν.
But when she could no longer hide him, she got him a papyrus basket (note: The Hebrew can also mean ark; also in verse 5; see Genesis 6:14.) and coated it with tar and pitch. Then she placed the child in the basket and set it among the reeds along the bank of the Nile.
2:4
καὶ κατεσκόπευεν ἡ ἀδελφὴ αὐτοῦ μακρόθεν μαθεῖν τί τὸ ἀποβησόμενον αὐτῷ.
And his sister stood at a distance to see what would happen to him.
2:5
κατέβη δὲ ἡ θυγάτηρ Φαραὼ λούσασθαι ἐπὶ τὸν ποταμόν, καὶ αἱ ἅβραι αὐτῆς παρεπορεύοντο παρὰ τὸν ποταμόν• καὶ ἰδοῦσα τὴν θῖβιν ἐν τῷ ἕλει, ἀποστείλασα τὴν ἅβραν ἀνείλατο αὐτήν.
Soon the daughter of Pharaoh went down to bathe in the Nile, and her attendants were walking along the riverbank. And when she saw the basket among the reeds, she sent her maidservant to retrieve it.
2:6
ἀνοίξασα δὲ ὁρᾷ παιδίον κλαῖον ἐν τῇ θίβει· καὶ ἐφείσατο αὐτοῦ ἡ θυγάτηρ Φαραώ, καὶ ἔφη Ἀπὸ τῶν παιδίων τῶν Ἐβραίων τοῦτο.
When she opened it, she saw the child, and behold, the little boy was crying. So she had compassion on him and said, “This is one of the Hebrew children.”
2:7
καὶ εἶπεν ἡ ἀδελφὴ αὐτοῦ τῇ θυγατρὶ Φαραώ Θέλεις καλέσω σοι γυναῖκα τροφεύουσαν ἐκ τῶν Ἐβραίων, καὶ θηλάσει σοι τὸ παιδίον ;
Then his sister said to Pharaoh’s daughter, “Shall I go and call one of the Hebrew women to nurse the child for you?”
2:8
ἡ δὲ εἶπεν ἡ θυγάτηρ Φαραώ πορεύου. ἐλθοῦσα δ‘ὲ ἡ νεᾶνις ἐκάλεσεν τὴν μητέρα τοῦ παιδίου.
“Go ahead,” Pharaoh’s daughter told her. And the girl went and called the boy’s mother.
2:9
εἶπεν δὲ πρὸς αὐτὴν ἡ θυγάτηρ Φαραώ Διατήρησόν μοι τὸ παιδίον τοῦτο καὶ θήλασόν μοι ἐγὼ δὲ δώσω σοι τὸν μισθόν. ἔλαβεν δὲ ἡ γυνὴ τὸ παιδίον καὶ ἐθήλαζεν αὐτό·
Pharaoh’s daughter said to her, “Take this child and nurse him for me, and I will pay your wages.” So the woman took the boy and nursed him.
2:10
ἁδρυνθέντος δὲ τοῦ παιδίου, εἰσήγαγεν αὐτὸ τὴν θυγατέρα Φαραώ, καὶ ἐγενήθη αὐτῇ εἰς υἱόν. ἐπωνόμασεν δὲ τὸ ὄνομα αὐτοῦ Μωυσῆν λέγουσα Ἐκ τοῦ ὕδατος αὐτὸν ἀνειλόμην.
When the child had grown older, she brought him to Pharaoh’s daughter, and he became her son. She named him Moses (note: Moses sounds like a Hebrew term that means to lift out.) and explained, “I drew him out of the water.”
2:11
Ἐγένετο δὲ ἐν ταῖς ἡμέραις ταῖς πολλαῖς ἐκείναις μέγας γενόμενος Μωυσῆς ἐξῆλθεν πρὸς τοὺς ἀδελφοὺς αὐτοῦ τοὺς υἱοὺς Ισραήλ. κατανοήσας δὲ τὸν πόνον αὐτῶν ὁρᾷ ἄνθρωπον Αἰγύπτιον τύπτοντα τινα Ἑβραῖον τῶν ἑαυτοῦ ἀδελφῶν τῶν υἱῶν Ἰσραήλ.
One day, after Moses had grown up, he went out to his own people (note: Or his brothers) and observed their hard labor. He saw an Egyptian beating a Hebrew, one of his own people.
2:12
πεαὐτὸν ἐν τῇ ἄμμῳ.
After looking this way and that and seeing no one, he struck down the Egyptian and hid his body in the sand.
2:13
ἐξελθὼν δὲ τῇ ἡμέρᾳ τῇ ᾇ ὁρᾷ δύο ἄνδρας Ἐβραίους διαπληκτιζομένους, καὶ λέγει τῷ Διὰ τί σὺ τύπτεις τὸν πλησίον ;
The next day Moses went out and saw two Hebrews fighting. He asked the one in the wrong, “Why are you attacking your companion?”
2:14
ὁ δὲ εἶπεν τίς σε κατέστησεν ἄρχοντα καὶ δικαστὴν ἐφ’ ἡμῶν ; μὴ ἀνελεῖν με σὺ θέλεις ὃν τρόπον ἀνεῖλες ἐχθὲς τὸν Αἰγύπτιον ; ἐφοβήθη δὲ Μωυσῆς καὶ εἰπεν Εἰ οὕτως ἐμφανὲς γέγονεν τὸ ῥῆμα τοῦτο,.
But the man replied, “Who made you ruler and judge over us (note: Cited in Acts 7:27 and Acts 7:35)? Are you planning to kill me as you killed the Egyptian (note: LXX Are you planning to kill me as you killed the Egyptian yesterday? Cited in Acts 7:28)?” Then Moses was afraid and thought, “This thing I have done has surely become known.”
2:15
ἤκουσεν δὲ Φαραὼ τὸ ῥῆμα τοῦτο, καὶ ἐζήτει ἀνελεῖν Μωυσῆν· ἀνεχώρησεν δὲ Μωυσῆς ἀπὸ προσώπου Φαραὼ καὶ ᾤκησεν ἐν γῇ Μαδιάμ· ἐλθὼν δὲ εἰς γῆν Μαδιὰμ ἐκάθισεν ἐπὶ τοῦ φρέατος.
When Pharaoh heard about this matter, he sought to kill Moses. But Moses fled from Pharaoh and settled in the land of Midian, where he sat down beside a well.
2:16
τῷ δὲ ἱερεῖ Μαδιὰμ ἦσαν ἔπτα θυγατέρες, ποιμαίνουσαι τὰ πρόβατα τοῦ πατρὸς αὐτῶν Ἰοθόρ· π,ρόβατα τοῦ πατρὸς αὐτῶν Ἰοθόρ.
Now the priest of Midian had seven daughters, and they came to draw water and fill the troughs to water their father’s flock.
2:17
παραγενόμενοι δὲ οἱ ποιμένες ἐξέβαλλον αὐτάς· ἀναστὰς δὲ Μωυσῆς ἐρρύσατο αὐτάς, καὶ ἤντλησεν αὐταῖς καὶ ἐπότισεν τὰ πρόβατα αὐτῶν.
And when some shepherds came along and drove them away, Moses rose up to help them and watered their flock.
2:18
παρεγένοντο δὲ πρὸς Ῥαγουὴλ ’τον πατέρα αὐτῶν· ὁ δὲ εἶπεν αὐταῖς Διὰ τί ἐταχύνατε τ,ου παραγενέσθαι σήμερον ;
When the daughters returned to their father Reuel (note: Reuel was also called Jethro; see Exodus 3:1.), he asked them, “Why have you returned so early today?”
2:19
αἱ δὲ εἶπαν Ἄνθρωπος Αἰγύπτιος ἐρρύσατο ἧμας ἀπὸ τῶν ποιμένων, καὶ ἤντλησεν ἡμῖν καὶ ἐπότισεν τὰ πρόβατα ἡμῶν.
“An Egyptian rescued us from the shepherds,” they replied. “He even drew water for us and watered the flock.”
2:20
ὁ δὲ εἶπεν ταῖς θυγατράσιν αὐτοῦ Καὶ ποῦ ἐστι,. καὶ ἵνα τί καταλελοίπατε τὸν ἄνθρωπον ; καλέσατε οὖν αὐτὸν ὅπως φάγῃ ἄρτον.
“So where is he?” their father asked. “Why did you leave the man behind? Invite him to have something to eat.”
2:21
κατῳκίσθη δὲ Μωυσῆς παρὰ τῷ ἀνθρώπῳ· καὶ ἐξέδοτο Σεπφώραν τὴν θυγατέρα αὐτοῦ Μωυσῇ γυναῖκα.
Moses agreed to stay with the man, and he gave his daughter Zipporah to Moses in marriage.
2:22
ἐν γαστρὶ δὲ λαβοῦσα ἢ γυνὴ ἔτεκεν υἱόν· καὶ ἐπωνόμασεν Μωυσῆς τὸ ὄνομα αὐτοῦ Γηρσάμ, λέγων ὅτι πάροικός εἰμι ἐν γῇ ἀλλοτρίᾳ.
And she gave birth to a son, and Moses named him Gershom (note: Gershom sounds like the Hebrew for foreigner.), saying, “I have become a foreigner in a foreign land.”
2:23
Μετὰ δὲ τὰς ἡμέρας τὰς πολλὰς ἐκείνας ἐτελεύτησεν ὁ Αἰγύπτου. καὶ κατεστέναξαν οἱ υἱοὶ Ἰσραὴλ ἀπὸ τῶν ἔργων καὶ ἀνεβόησαν, καὶ ἀνέβη ἡ βοὴ αὐτῶν πρὸς τὸν θεὸν ἀπὸ τῶν ἔργων·
After a long time, the king of Egypt died. The Israelites groaned and cried out under their burden of slavery, and their cry for deliverance from bondage ascended to God.
2:24
καὶ εἰσήκουσεν ὁ θεὸς τὸν στεναγμὸν αὐτῶν, καὶ ἐμνήσθη ὁ θεὸς τῆς διαθήκης αὐτοῦ τῆς πρὸς Ἀβραὰμ καὶ Ἰσαὰκ καὶ Ἰακώβ·
So God heard their groaning, and He remembered His covenant with Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.
2:25
καὶ ἔπιδεν ὁ θεὸς τοὺς υἱοὺς Ἰσραήλ, καὶ ἐγνώσθη αὐτοῖς.
God saw the Israelites and took notice.
