La première année du règne de Baltasar, roi de Babylone, Daniel, étant sur sa couche, vit un songe et des visions en son esprit. Il écrivit ensuite le songe et raconta la substance des faits.
In the first year of the reign of Belshazzar over Babylon, Daniel had a dream, and visions passed through his mind as he lay on his bed. He wrote down the dream, and this is the summary of his account.
Daniel prit la parole et dit : " je voyais dans ma vision pendant la nuit, et voici que les quatre vents du ciel fondaient sur la grande mer,
Daniel declared: “In my vision in the night I looked, and suddenly the four winds of heaven were churning up the great sea (note: Perhaps the Great Sea, that is, the Mediterranean Sea).
Et quatre grandes bêtes montèrent de la mer, différentes l'une de l'autre.
Then four great beasts came up out of the sea, each one different from the others:
La première était semblable à un lion et avait des ailes d'aigle. Je contemplais, jusqu'au moment où ses ailes furent arrachées, et où elle fut enlevée de terre, et dressée sur ses pieds, comme un homme, et où un cœur d'homme lui fut donné.
The first beast was like a lion, and it had the wings of an eagle. I watched until its wings were torn off and it was lifted up from the ground and made to stand on two feet like a man and given the mind of a man.
Et voici une autre bête, une deuxième, ressemblant à un ours ; elle dressait l'un de ses côtés, et trois côtes étaient dans sa gueule entre ses dents, et on lui disait : " Lève-toi, mange beaucoup de chair !
Suddenly another beast appeared, which looked like a bear. It was raised up on one of its sides, and it had three ribs in its mouth between its teeth. So it was told, ‘Get up and gorge yourself on flesh!’
Après cela, je regardais, et voici une autre bête semblable a un léopard ; elle avait sur son dos quatre ailes d'oiseau, et la bête avait quatre têtes ; et la domination lui fut donnée.
Next, as I watched, suddenly another beast appeared. It was like a leopard, and on its back it had four wings like those of a bird. The beast also had four heads, and it was given authority to rule.
Après cela je regardais dans les visions de la nuit, et voici une quatrième bête, terrible, effrayante et extraordinairement forte ; elle avait de grandes dents de fer ; elle dévorait et brisait, et le reste elle le foulait aux pieds ; elle était différente de toutes les bêtes qui l'avaient précédée, et elle avait dix cornes.
After this, as I watched in my vision in the night, suddenly a fourth beast appeared, and it was terrifying—dreadful and extremely strong—with large iron teeth. It devoured and crushed; then it trampled underfoot whatever was left. It was different from all the beasts before it, and it had ten horns.
Je considérais les cornes, et voici qu'une autre corne, petite, s'éleva au milieu d'elles, et trois des premières cornes furent arrachées par elle ; et voici que cette corne avait des yeux comme des yeux d'homme, et une bouche qui disait de grandes choses.
While I was contemplating the horns, suddenly another horn, a little one, came up among them, and three of the first horns were uprooted before it. This horn had eyes like those of a man and a mouth that spoke words of arrogance.
Je regardais, jusqu'au moment où des trônes furent placés, et où un vieillard s'assit. Son vêtement était blanc comme de la neige, et les cheveux de sa tête étaient comme de la laine pure. Son trône était des flammes de feu ; les roues, un feu ardent.
As I continued to watch, thrones were set in place, and the Ancient of Days took His seat. His clothing was white as snow, and the hair of His head was like pure wool. His throne was flaming with fire, and its wheels were all ablaze.
Un fleuve de feu coulait, sortant de devant lui ; mille milliers le servaient, et une myriade de myriades se tenaient debout devant lui. Le Juge s'assit, et des livres furent ouverts.
A river of fire was flowing, coming out from His presence. Thousands upon thousands attended Him, and myriads upon myriads stood before Him. The court was convened, and the books were opened.
Je regardais alors, à cause du bruit des grandes paroles que la corne proférait ; je regardais, jusqu'au moment où la bête fut tuée, et son corps détruit et livré à la flamme de feu.
Then I kept watching because of the arrogant words the horn was speaking. As I continued to watch, the beast was slain, and its body was destroyed and thrown into the blazing fire.
Au reste des bêtes aussi, on avait ôté leur domination, et la durée de leur vie avait été fixée jusqu'à un temps et un moment.
As for the rest of the beasts, their dominion was removed, but they were granted an extension of life for a season and a time.
Je regardais dans les visions de la nuit, et voici que sur les nuées vint comme un Fils d'homme ; il s'avança jusqu'au vieillard, et on le fit approcher devant lui.
In my vision in the night I continued to watch, and I saw One like the Son of Man (note: Or one like a son of man) coming with the clouds of heaven (note: See Matthew 24:30, Matthew 26:64, Mark 13:26, Mark 14:62, Luke 21:27, Revelation 1:13, and Revelation 14:14.). He approached the Ancient of Days and was led into His presence.
Et il lui fut donné domination, gloire et règne, et tous les peuples, nations et langues le servirent. Sa domination est une domination éternelle qui ne passera point, et son règne ne sera jamais détruit.
And He was given dominion, glory, and kingship, that the people of every nation and language should serve Him. His dominion is an everlasting dominion that will not pass away, and His kingdom is one that will never be destroyed.
Pour moi, Daniel, mon esprit fut troublé au dedans de moi, et les visions de ma tête m'effrayèrent.
I, Daniel, was grieved in my spirit, and the visions in my mind alarmed me.
Je m'approchai vers l'un de ceux qui se tenaient là, et je lui demandai quelque chose de certain sur tout cela, et il me parla pour m'en donner l'explication.
I approached one of those who were standing there, and I asked him the true meaning of all this. So he told me the interpretation of these things:
Ces grandes bêtes, qui sont quatre, ce sont quatre rois qui s'élèveront de la terre ;
‘These four great beasts are four kings who will arise from the earth.
mais les Saints du Très-Haut recevront le royaume, et ils posséderont le royaume pour l'éternité, pour une éternité d'éternités.
But the saints of the Most High will receive the kingdom and possess it forever—yes, forever and ever.’
Alors je voulus avoir une certitude sur la quatrième bête qui était différente de toutes les autres, extrêmement terrible, dont les dents étaient de fer et les griffes d'airain, qui mangeait, brisait et foulait aux pieds ce qui restait ;
Then I wanted to know the true meaning of the fourth beast, which was different from all the others—extremely terrifying—devouring and crushing with iron teeth and bronze claws, then trampling underfoot whatever was left.
et sur les dix cornes qui étaient sur sa tête, et sur l'autre corne qui s'était élevée et devant laquelle trois étaient tombées, cette corne qui avait des yeux et une bouche proférant de grandes choses, et qui paraissait plus grande que ses compagnes.
I also wanted to know about the ten horns on its head and the other horn that came up, before which three of them fell—the horn whose appearance was more imposing than the others, with eyes and with a mouth that spoke words of arrogance.
Je regardai, et cette corne faisait la guerre aux Saints et l'emportait sur eux,
As I watched, this horn was waging war against the saints and prevailing against them,
jusqu'à ce que le vieillard vint, que le jugement fut donné aux Saints du Très Haut, et que le temps arriva où les Saints possédèrent le royaume.
until the Ancient of Days arrived and pronounced judgment in favor of the saints of the Most High, and the time came for them to possess the kingdom.
Il me parla ainsi : " La quatrième bête, c'est un quatrième royaume qui sera sur la terre, différent de tous les royaumes, et qui dévorera toute la terre, la foulera et la réduira en poudre.
This is what he said: ‘The fourth beast is a fourth kingdom that will appear on the earth, different from all the other kingdoms, and it will devour the whole earth, trample it down, and crush it.
Les dix cornes signifient que de ce royaume se lèveront dix rois ; un autre se lèvera après eux, qui différera des précédents, et il abattra trois rois.
And the ten horns are ten kings who will rise from this kingdom. After them another king, different from the earlier ones, will rise and subdue three kings.
Il proférera des paroles contre le Très-Haut, il opprimera les Saints du Très-Haut, et formera le dessein de changer les temps et la loi, et les Saints seront livrés en sa main jusqu'à un temps, des temps et une moitié de temps.
He will speak out against the Most High and oppress the saints of the Most High, intending to change the appointed times and laws; and the saints will be given into his hand for a time, and times, and half a time.
Et le jugement se tiendra, et on lui ôtera sa domination pour le détruire et l'anéantir pour toujours.
But the court will convene, and his dominion will be taken away and completely destroyed forever.
Et le règne, la domination et la grandeur des royaumes qui sont sous tous les cieux seront donnés au peuple des Saints du Très-Haut ; son règne est un règne éternel, et toutes les puissances le serviront et lui obéiront. "
Then the sovereignty, dominion, and greatness of the kingdoms under all of heaven will be given to the people, the saints of the Most High. His kingdom will be an everlasting kingdom, and all rulers will serve and obey Him.’
Voilà la fin du discours. Moi, Daniel, mes pensées m'effrayèrent beaucoup, je changeai de couleur ; mais je conservai la chose dans mon cœur.
Thus ends the matter. As for me, Daniel, my thoughts troubled me greatly, and my face turned pale. But I kept the matter to myself.”
