Moi, Nabuchodonosor, j'étais tranquille dans ma maison et florissant dans mon palais.
King Nebuchadnezzar, To the people of every nation and language who dwell in all the earth: May your prosperity be multiplied.
Je vis un songe qui m'épouvanta, et mes pensées sur ma couche et les visions de mon esprit me troublèrent.
I am pleased to declare the signs and wonders that the Most High God has performed for me.
Je publiai un décret pour qu'on fit venir devant moi tous les sages de Babylone, pour me faire savoir la signification du songe.
How great are His signs, how mighty His wonders! His kingdom is an eternal kingdom; His dominion endures from generation to generation.
Alors vinrent les lettrés, les magiciens, les Chaldéens et les astrologues ; je dis le songe devant eux, mais ils ne m'en firent pas savoir la signification.
I, Nebuchadnezzar, was at ease in my house and flourishing in my palace.
Enfin se présenta devant moi Daniel, dont le nom est Baltassar, d'après le nom de mon dieu, et qui a en lui l'esprit des dieux saints, et je dis le songe devant lui :
I had a dream, and it frightened me; while I was in my bed, the images and visions in my mind alarmed me.
" Baltassar, chef des lettrés, comme je sais que l'esprit des dieux saints est en toi et qu'aucun mystère ne t'embarrasse, expose-moi les visions que j'ai vues en songe, et leur signification.
So I issued a decree that all the wise men of Babylon be brought before me to interpret the dream for me.
Voici quelles étaient les visions de mon esprit sur ma couche : Je vis, et voici au milieu de la terre un arbre dont la hauteur était grande.
When the magicians, enchanters, astrologers (note: Or Chaldeans), and diviners came in, I told them the dream, but they could not interpret it for me.
L'arbre grandit et devint fort ; sa cime atteignait le ciel, et on le voyait des extrémités de toute la terre.
But at last, into my presence came Daniel (whose name is Belteshazzar after the name of my god, and in whom is the spirit of the holy gods). And I told him the dream:
Son feuillage était beau et ses fruits abondants, et il y avait sur lui de la nourriture pour tous ; sous son ombre les bêtes des champs s'abritaient, dans ses branches demeuraient les oiseaux du ciel, et de lui toute chair se nourrissait.
“O Belteshazzar, chief of the magicians, I know that the spirit of the holy gods is in you and that no mystery baffles you. So explain to me the visions I saw in my dream, and their interpretation.
Je contemplai ces visions de mon esprit sur ma couche, et voici qu'un veillant, un saint, descendait du ciel.
In these visions of my mind as I was lying in bed, I saw this come to pass: There was a tree in the midst of the land, and its height was great.
Il cria avec force et parla ainsi : Abattez l'arbre et coupez ses branches ; secouez son feuillage et dispersez ses fruits ; que les animaux s'enfuient de dessous lui, et que les oiseaux quittent ses branches.
The tree grew large and strong; its top reached the sky, and it was visible to the ends of the earth.
Toutefois laissez en terre la souche de ses racines, mais dans des chaînes de fer et d'airain, au milieu du gazon des champs. Qu'il soit trempé de la rosée du ciel et qu'il partage avec les animaux l'herbe de la terre.
Its leaves were beautiful, its fruit was abundant, and upon it was food for all. Under it the beasts of the field found shelter, in its branches the birds of the air nested, and from it every creature was fed.
Que son cœur ne soit plus un cœur d'homme, et qu'un cœur de bête lui soit donné, et que sept temps passent sur lui.
As I lay on my bed, I also saw in the visions of my mind a watcher (note: Or an angelic watcher or a messenger; also in verses 17 and 23), a holy one, coming down from heaven.
Cette sentence repose sur un décret des veillants, et cette affaire est un ordre des saints, afin que les vivants sachent que le Très-Haut domine sur la royauté humaine, qu'il la donne à qui il veut, et qu'il y élève le plus humble des hommes.
He called out in a loud voice: ‘Cut down the tree and chop off its branches; strip off its leaves and scatter its fruit. Let the beasts flee from under it, and the birds from its branches.
Tel est le songe que j'ai vu, moi, le roi Nabuchodonosor ; et toi, Baltassar, dis-en la signification, car tous les sages de mon royaume ne peuvent m'en faire savoir la signification ; mais toi, tu le peux, car l'esprit des dieux saints est en toi. "
But leave the stump with its roots in the ground, with a band of iron and bronze around it, in the tender grass of the field. Let him be drenched with the dew of heaven and graze with the beasts on the grass of the earth.
Alors Daniel, dont le nom est Baltassar, demeura quelque temps interdit, et ses pensées le troublaient. Le roi reprit et dit : " Que le songe et sa signification ne te troublent point ! " Baltassar répondit en disant : " Mon seigneur, que le songe soit pour tes ennemis, et sa signification pour tes adversaires.
Let his mind be changed from that of a man, and let him be given the mind of a beast till seven times pass him by.
L'arbre que tu as vu, qui grandit et devint fort, dont la cime atteignait au ciel et qu'on voyait de toute la terre ;
This decision is the decree of the watchers, the verdict declared by the holy ones, so that the living will know that the Most High rules over the kingdom of mankind and gives it to whom He wishes, setting over it the lowliest of men.’
dont le feuillage était beau et les fruits abondants ; où il y avait de la nourriture pour tous ; sous lequel s'abritaient les animaux des champs, et dans les branches duquel demeuraient les oiseaux du ciel,
This is the dream that I, King Nebuchadnezzar, saw. Now, Belteshazzar, tell me the interpretation, because none of the wise men of my kingdom can interpret it for me. But you are able, because the spirit of the holy gods is in you.”
cet arbre, c'est toi, ô roi, qui es devenu grand et fort, dont la grandeur s'est accrue et a atteint au ciel, et dont la domination s'étend jusqu'aux extrémités de la terre.
For a time, Daniel, who was also known as Belteshazzar, was perplexed, and his thoughts alarmed him. So the king said, “Belteshazzar, do not let the dream or its interpretation alarm you.” “My lord,” replied Belteshazzar, “may the dream apply to those who hate you, and its interpretation to your enemies!
Si le roi a vu un veillant, un saint, descendant du ciel et disant : Abattez l'arbre et détruisez-le ; toutefois laissez en terre la souche de ses racines, mais dans des chaînes de fer et d'airain, au milieu du gazon des champs ; qu'il soit trempé de la rosée du ciel, et qu'il fasse sa part avec les animaux des champs, jusqu'à ce que sept temps aient passé sur lui :
The tree you saw that grew large and strong, whose top reached the sky and was visible to all the earth,
en voici la signification, ô roi ! C'est un décret du Très-Haut qui s'accomplira sur mon seigneur le roi :
whose foliage was beautiful and whose fruit was abundant, providing food for all, under which the beasts of the field lived, and in whose branches the birds of the air nested—
On te chassera du milieu des hommes, et ta demeure sera parmi les animaux des champs ; on te donnera, comme aux bœufs, de l'herbe à manger et on te laissera tremper par la rosée du ciel, et sept temps passeront sur toi, jusqu'à ce que tu saches que le Très-Haut domine sur la royauté des hommes et qu'il la donne à qui il lui plaît.
you, O king, are that tree! For you have become great and strong; your greatness has grown to reach the sky, and your dominion extends to the ends of the earth.
Et si on a ordonné de laisser la souche des racines de l'arbre, c'est que ta royauté te sera rendue quand tu auras reconnu que le ciel a la domination.
And you, O king, saw a watcher, a holy one, coming down from heaven and saying: ‘Cut down the tree and destroy it, but leave the stump with its roots in the ground, with a band of iron and bronze around it, in the tender grass of the field. Let him be drenched with the dew of heaven, and graze with the beasts of the field till seven times pass him by.’
C'est pourquoi, ô roi, que mon conseil soit agréé devant toi : rachète tes péchés par la justice et tes iniquités par la miséricorde envers les malheureux, si ta prospérité doit se prolonger encore. "
This is the interpretation, O king, and this is the decree that the Most High has issued against my lord the king:
Toutes ces choses arrivèrent au roi Nabuchodonosor.
You will be driven away from mankind, and your dwelling will be with the beasts of the field. You will feed on grass like an ox and be drenched with the dew of heaven, and seven times shall pass you by, until you acknowledge that the Most High rules over the kingdom of mankind and gives it to whom He wishes.
Au bout de douze mois, comme il se promenait sur les terrasses du palais royal de Babylone,
As for the command to leave the stump of the tree with its roots, your kingdom will be restored to you as soon as you acknowledge that Heaven rules.
le roi prit la parole et dit : " N'est-ce pas là Babylone la grande, que j'ai bâtie comme résidence royale par la puissance de ma force et pour la gloire de ma majesté. "
Therefore, may my advice be pleasing to you, O king. Break away from your sins by doing what is right, and from your iniquities by showing mercy to the oppressed. Perhaps there will be an extension of your prosperity.”
La parole était encore dans la bouche du roi, qu'une voix descendit du ciel : " On te fait savoir, roi Nabuchodonosor, que ta royauté a passé loin de toi.
All this happened to King Nebuchadnezzar.
On te chassera du milieu des hommes, et ta demeure sera avec les animaux des champs ; on te donnera, comme aux bœufs, de l'herbe a manger, et sept temps passeront sur toi, jusqu'à ce que tu saches que le Très-Haut domine sur la royauté des hommes, et qu'il la donne à qui il lui plaît. "
Twelve months later, as he was walking on the roof of the royal palace of Babylon,
Au même moment, la parole s'accomplit sur Nabuchodonosor ; il fut chassé du milieu des hommes ; il mangea de l'herbe comme les bœufs, et son corps fut trempé de la rosée du ciel, jusqu'à ce que ses cheveux crussent comme les plumes des aigles, et ses ongles comme ceux des oiseaux.
the king exclaimed, “Is this not Babylon the Great, which I myself have built as a royal residence by the might of my power and for the glory of my majesty?”
Mais, à la fin des jours, moi, Nabuchodonosor, je levai les yeux vers le ciel, et ma raison me revint. Je bénis le Très-Haut, et je louai et glorifiai Celui qui vit éternellement, dont la domination est une domination éternelle, et dont le règne subsiste de génération en génération.
While the words were still in the king’s mouth, a voice came from heaven: “It is decreed to you, King Nebuchadnezzar, that the kingdom has departed from you.
Tous les habitants de la terre ne comptent pour rien devant lui ; il agit comme il lui plaît avec l'armée des cieux et avec les habitants de la terre, et il n'y a personne pour lui frapper sur la main et lui dire : " Que faites-vous ? "
You will be driven away from mankind to live with the beasts of the field, and you will feed on grass like an ox. And seven times will pass you by, until you acknowledge that the Most High rules over the kingdom of mankind and gives it to whom He wishes.”
Dans le même temps, ma raison me revint et, pour la gloire de ma royauté, ma majesté et ma splendeur me revinrent ; mes conseillers et mes grands me rappelèrent, je fus rétabli dans ma royauté, et ma puissance s'accrut encore.
At that moment the sentence against Nebuchadnezzar was fulfilled. He was driven away from mankind. He ate grass like an ox, and his body was drenched with the dew of heaven, until his hair grew like the feathers of an eagle and his nails like the claws of a bird.
Maintenant, moi, Nabuchodonosor, je loue, j'exalte et je glorifie le roi du ciel, dont toutes les œuvres sont vraies et les voies justes, et qui peut humilier ceux qui marchent avec orgueil. "
But at the end of those days I, Nebuchadnezzar, looked up to heaven, and my sanity was restored to me. Then I praised the Most High, and I honored and glorified Him who lives forever: “For His dominion is an everlasting dominion, and His kingdom endures from generation to generation.
