Cinq jours après, arriva le grand prêtre Ananie, avec quelques Anciens et un certain rhéteur nommé Tertullus ; ils portèrent plainte au gouverneur contre Paul.
Five days later the high priest Ananias came down with some elders and a lawyer (note: Or an orator) named Tertullus, who presented to the governor their case against Paul.
Celui-ci ayant été appelé, Tertullus se mit à l'accuser en ces termes : " Jouissant d'une paix profonde, grâce à toi, excellent Félix, et aux réformes que ta prévoyance a opérées en faveur de cette nation,
When Paul had been called in, Tertullus opened the prosecution: “Because of you, we have enjoyed a lasting peace, and your foresight has brought improvements to this nation.
nous les accueillons toujours et partout avec une entière reconnaissance.
In every way and everywhere, most excellent Felix, we acknowledge this with all gratitude.
Mais, pour ne pas t'arrêter davantage, je te prie de nous écouter un moment avec ta bonté ordinaire.
But in order not to delay you any further, I beg your indulgence to hear us briefly.
Nous avons trouvé cet homme : c'est une peste, un homme qui excite des troubles parmi les Juifs dans le monde entier, un chef de la secte des Nazaréens,
We have found this man to be a pestilence, stirring up dissension among the Jews all over the world. He is a ringleader of the sect of the Nazarenes,
et qui même a tenté de profaner le temple ; aussi nous l'avons arrêté. [et nous voulions le juger selon notre loi.
and he even tried to desecrate the temple; so we seized him.
et il a ordonné que ses accusateurs vinssent devant toi]. Tu pourras toi-même, en l'interrogeant, apprendre de sa bouche tout ce dont nous l'accusons. "
By examining him yourself, you will be able to learn the truth about all our charges against him.”
Les Juifs se joignirent à cette accusation, soutenant que les choses étaient ainsi.
The Jews concurred, asserting that these charges were true.
Après que le gouverneur lui eut fait signe de parler, Paul répondit : " C'est avec confiance que je prends la parole pour me justifier, car je sais que tu gouvernes cette nation depuis plusieurs années.
When the governor motioned for Paul to speak, he began his response: “Knowing that you have been a judge over this nation for many years, I gladly make my defense.
Il n'y a pas plus de douze jours, tu peux t'en assurer, que je suis monté à Jérusalem pour adorer.
You can verify for yourself that no more than twelve days ago I went up to Jerusalem to worship.
Et l'on ne m'a pas vu dans le temple parler à quelqu'un, ni ameuter la foule, soit dans les synagogues,
Yet my accusers did not find me debating with anyone in the temple or riling up a crowd in the synagogues or in the city.
soit dans la ville ; et ils ne sauraient prouver ce dont ils m'accusent maintenant.
Nor can they prove to you any of their charges against me.
Je te confesse que je sers le Dieu de nos pères selon la religion qu'ils appellent une secte, croyant tout ce qui est écrit dans la Loi et les Prophètes,
I do confess to you, however, that I worship the God of our fathers according to the Way, which they call a sect. I believe everything that is laid down by the Law and written in the Prophets,
et ayant en Dieu cette espérance, comme ils l'ont eux-mêmes, qu'il y aura une résurrection des justes et des pécheurs.
and I have the same hope in God that they themselves cherish, that there will be a resurrection of both the righteous and the wicked.
C'est pourquoi moi aussi je m'efforce d'avoir constamment une conscience sans reproche devant Dieu et devant les hommes.
In this hope, I strive always to maintain a clear conscience before God and man.
Je suis donc venu, après plusieurs années, pour faire des aumônes à mes compatriotes et pour présenter des oblations.
After several years, then, I returned to Jerusalem to bring alms to my people and to present offerings.
C'est alors que j'ai été trouvé dans le temple, après ma consécration, sans attroupement ni tumulte,
At the time they found me in the temple, I was ceremonially clean and was not inciting a crowd or an uproar. But there are some Jews from the province of Asia
par certains Juifs d'Asie ; c'était à eux de paraître devant toi comme accusateurs, s'ils avaient quelque chose à me reprocher.
who ought to appear before you and bring charges, if they have anything against me.
Ou bien que ceux-ci disent de quel crime ils m'ont trouvé coupable, lorsque j'ai comparu devant le Sanhédrin,
Otherwise, let these men state for themselves any crime they found in me when I stood before the Sanhedrin (note: Or the Council),
à moins qu'on me fasse un crime de cette seule parole que j'ai dite à haute voix devant eux : C'est à cause de la résurrection des morts que je suis aujourd'hui mis en jugement devant vous. "
unless it was this one thing I called out as I stood in their presence: ‘It is concerning the resurrection of the dead that I am on trial before you today.’”
Félix, qui connaissait bien cette religion les ajourna, en disant : " Quand le tribun Lysias sera venu je connaîtrai à fond votre affaire. "
Then Felix, who was well informed about the Way, adjourned the hearing and said, “When Lysias the commander comes, I will decide your case.”
Et il donna l'ordre au centurion de garder Paul, mais en lui laissant quelque liberté, et sans empêcher aucun des siens de lui rendre des services.
He ordered the centurion to keep Paul under guard, but to allow him some freedom and permit his friends to minister to his needs.
Quelques jours après, Félix vint avec Drusille, sa femme, qui était juive. Ayant fait appeler Paul, il l'entendit sur la foi en Jésus-Christ.
After several days, Felix returned with his wife Drusilla, who was a Jewess. He sent for Paul and listened to him speak about faith in Christ Jesus.
Mais Paul en étant venu à parler de justice, de tempérance et de jugement à venir, Félix effrayé dit : " Pour le moment, retire-toi ; je te rappellerai à la première occasion. "
As Paul expounded on righteousness, self-control, and the coming judgment, Felix became frightened and said, “You may go for now. When I find the time, I will call for you.”
Il espérait en même temps que Paul lui donnerait de l'argent ; aussi le faisait-il venir assez fréquemment pour s'entretenir avec lui.
At the same time, he was hoping that Paul would offer him a bribe. So he sent for Paul frequently and talked with him.
Deux ans s'écoulèrent ainsi, et Félix eut pour successeur Porcius Festus ; et, dans le désir d'être agréable aux Juifs, il laissa Paul en prison.
After two years had passed, Felix was succeeded by Porcius Festus. And wishing to do the Jews a favor, Felix left Paul in prison.
