" Mes frères et mes pères, écoutez ce que j'ai maintenant à vous dire pour ma défense. " —
“Brothers and fathers, listen now to my defense before you.”
Dès qu'ils entendirent qu'il leur parlait en langue hébraïque, ils firent encore plus de silence.
When they heard him speak to them in Hebrew, they became even more quiet. Then Paul declared,
Et Paul dit : " Je suis Juif, né à Tarse en Cilicie ; mais j'ai été élevé dans cette ville et instruit aux pieds de Gamaliel dans la connaissance exacte de la Loi de nos pères, étant plein de zèle pour Dieu, comme vous l'êtes tous aujourd'hui.
“I am a Jew, born in Tarsus of Cilicia, but raised in this city. I was educated at the feet of Gamaliel in strict conformity to the law of our fathers. I was just as zealous for God as any of you are today.
C'est moi qui ai persécuté cette secte jusqu'à la mort, chargeant de chaînes et jetant en prison hommes et femmes :
I persecuted this Way even to the death, detaining both men and women and throwing them into prison,
le grand-prêtre et tous les Anciens m'en sont témoins. Ayant même reçu d'eux des lettres pour les frères, je partis pour Damas afin d'amener enchaînés à Jérusalem ceux qui se trouvaient là, et de les faire punir.
as the high priest and the whole Council can testify about me. I even obtained letters from them to their brothers in Damascus, and I was on my way to apprehend these people and bring them to Jerusalem to be punished.
Mais comme j'étais en chemin, et déjà près de Damas, tout à coup, vers midi, une vive lumière venant du ciel resplendit autour de moi.
About noon as I was approaching Damascus, suddenly a bright light from heaven flashed around me.
Je tombai par terre, et j'entendis une voix qui me disait : Saul, Saul, pourquoi me persécutes-tu ?
I fell to the ground and heard a voice say to me, ‘Saul, Saul, why do you persecute Me?’
Je répondis : Qui êtes-vous, Seigneur ? Et il me dit : Je suis Jésus de Nazareth, que tu persécutes.
‘Who are You, Lord?’ I asked. ‘I am Jesus of Nazareth, whom you are persecuting,’ He replied.
Ceux qui étaient avec moi virent bien la lumière, mais ils n'entendirent pas la voix de celui qui me parlait.
My companions saw the light, but they could not understand the voice of the One speaking to me.
Alors je dis : Que dois-je faire, Seigneur ? Et le Seigneur me répondit : Lève-toi, va à Damas, et là on te dira tout ce que tu dois faire.
Then I asked, ‘What should I do, Lord?’ ‘Get up and go into Damascus,’ He told me. ‘There you will be told all that you have been appointed to do.’
Et comme par suite de l'éclat de cette lumière je ne voyais plus, ceux qui étaient avec moi me prirent par la main, et j'arrivai à Damas.
Because the brilliance of the light had blinded me, my companions led me by the hand into Damascus.
Or un homme pieux selon la Loi, nommé Ananie, et de qui tous les Juifs de la ville rendaient un bon témoignage,
There a man named Ananias, a devout observer of the law who was highly regarded by all the Jews living there,
vint me voir, et s'étant approché de moi, me dit : Saul, mon frère, recouvre la vue. Et au même instant je le vis.
came and stood beside me. ‘Brother Saul,’ he said, ‘receive your sight.’ And at that moment I could see him.
Il dit alors : Le Dieu de nos pères t'a prédestiné à connaître sa volonté, à voir le Juste et entendre les paroles de sa bouche.
Then he said, ‘The God of our fathers has appointed you to know His will and to see the Righteous One and to hear His voice.
Car tu lui serviras de témoin, devant tous les hommes, des choses que tu as vues et entendues.
You will be His witness to everyone of what you have seen and heard.
Et maintenant que tardes-tu ? Lève-toi, reçois le baptême et purifie-toi de tes péchés, en invoquant son nom. —
And now what are you waiting for? Get up, be baptized, and wash your sins away, calling on His name.’
De retour à Jérusalem, comme je priais dans le temple, il m'arriva d'être ravi en esprit,
Later, when I had returned to Jerusalem and was praying at the temple, I fell into a trance
et je vis le Seigneur qui me disait : Hâte-toi et sors au plus tôt de Jérusalem, parce qu'on n'y recevra pas le témoignage que tu rendras de moi. —
and saw the Lord saying to me, ‘Hurry! Leave Jerusalem quickly, because the people here will not accept your testimony about Me.’
Seigneur, répondis-je, ils savent eux-mêmes que je faisais mettre en prison et battre de verges dans les synagogues ceux qui croyaient en vous,
‘Lord,’ I answered, ‘they know very well that in one synagogue after another I imprisoned and beat those who believed in You.
et lorsqu'on répandit le sang d'Etienne, votre témoin, j'étais moi-même présent, joignant mon approbation à celle des autres et gardant les vêtements de ceux qui le lapidaient.
And when the blood of Your witness (note: Or martyr) Stephen was shed, I stood there giving my approval and watching over the garments of those who killed him.’
Alors il me dit : Va, c'est aux nations lointaines que je veux t'envoyer. "
Then He said to me, ‘Go! I will send you far away to the Gentiles.’”
Les Juifs l'avaient écouté jusqu'à ces mots ; ils élevèrent alors la voix, en disant : " Ote de la terre un pareil homme ; il n'est pas digne de vivre. "
The crowd listened to Paul until he made this statement. Then they lifted up their voices and shouted, “Rid the earth of him! He is not fit to live!”
Et comme ils poussaient de grands cris, jetant leurs manteaux et lançant de la poussière en l'air,
As they were shouting and throwing off their cloaks and tossing dust into the air,
le tribun ordonna de faire entrer Paul dans la forteresse et de lui donner la question par le fouet, afin de savoir pour quel motif ils criaient ainsi contre lui.
the commander ordered that Paul be brought into the barracks. He directed that Paul be flogged and interrogated to determine the reason for this outcry against him.
Déjà les soldats l'avaient lié avec les courroies, lorsque Paul dit au centurion qui était là : " Vous est-il permis de flageller un citoyen romain, qui n'est pas même condamné ? "
But as they stretched him out to strap him down, Paul said to the centurion standing there, “Is it lawful for you to flog a Roman citizen without a trial?”
A ces mots, le centurion alla trouver le tribun pour l'avertir, et lui dit : " Que vas-tu faire ? Cet homme est citoyen romain. "
On hearing this, the centurion went and reported it to the commander. “What are you going to do?” he said. “This man is a Roman citizen.”
Le tribun vint et dit à Paul : " Dis-moi, es-tu citoyen romain ? " " Oui, " répondit-il ;
The commander went to Paul and asked, “Tell me, are you a Roman citizen?” “Yes,” he answered.
et le tribun repris : " Moi, j'ai acheté bien cher ce droit de cité. " — " Et moi, dit Paul, je l'ai par ma naissance. "
“I paid a high price for my citizenship,” said the commander. “But I was born a citizen,” Paul replied.
Aussitôt ceux qui se disposaient à lui donner la question se retirèrent ; et le tribun aussi eut peur, quand il sut que Paul était citoyen romain et qu'il l'avait fait lier.
At once those who were about to interrogate Paul stepped back, and the commander himself was alarmed when he realized that he had put a Roman citizen in chains.
Le lendemain, voulant savoir exactement de quoi les Juifs l'accusaient , il lui fit ôter ses liens, et donna l'ordre aux princes des prêtres et à tout le Sanhédrin de se réunir ; puis, ayant fait descendre Paul, il le plaça au milieu d'eux.
The next day the commander, wanting to learn the real reason Paul was accused by the Jews, released him and ordered the chief priests and the whole Sanhedrin (note: Or the whole Council) to assemble. Then he brought Paul down and had him stand before them.
