ἀνὰ μέσον τοῦ οἴκου Δαυείδ· καὶ ὁ οἶκος Δαυεὶδ ἐπορεύετο καὶ ἐκραταιοῦτο, καὶ ὁ οἶκος Σαοὺλ ἐπορεύετο καὶ ἠσθένει.
Now the war between the house of Saul and the house of David was protracted. And David grew stronger and stronger, while the house of Saul grew weaker and weaker.
Καὶ ἐτέχθησαν τῷ Δαυεὶδ υἱοὶ ἐν Χεβρών, καὶ ἦν ὁ πρωτότοκος αὐτοῦ Ἀμνὼν τῆς Ἀχεινόομ τῆς Ἰσραηλίτισος,
And sons were born to David in Hebron: His firstborn was Amnon, by Ahinoam of Jezreel;
καὶ ὁ δεύτερος αὐτοῦ Δαλουιὰ τῆς Ἀβειγαίας τῆς Καρμηλίας, καὶ ὁ τρίτος Ἀβεσσαλὼμ υἱὸς Μααχὰ θυγατρὸς Θομμεὶ βασιλέως Γεσείρ,
his second was Chileab (note: LXX Daluia; some translators Daniel; see 1 Chronicles 3:1.), by Abigail the widow of Nabal of Carmel; his third was Absalom, the son of Maacah daughter of King Talmai of Geshur;
καὶ ὁ τέταρτος Ὀρνεὶλ υὑὸς Φεγγείθ, καὶ ὁ πέμπτος Σαβατειὰ τῆς Ἀβειτάλ,
his fourth was Adonijah, the son of Haggith; his fifth was Shephatiah, the son of Abital;
καὶ ὁ ἕκτος Ἰεθεραάμ τῆς Αἰγὰλ γυναικὸς Δαυείδ· οὗτοι ἐτέχθησαν τῷ Δαυεὶδ ἐν Χεβρών.
and his sixth was Ithream, by David’s wife Eglah. These sons were born to David in Hebron.
Καὶ ἐγένετο ἐν τῷ εἶναι τὸν πόλεμον ἀνὰ μέσον τοῦ οἴκου Σαοὺλ καὶ ἀνὰ μέσον τοῦ οἴκου Δαυείδ, καὶ Ἀβεννὴρ ἦν κρατῶν τοῦ οἴκου Σαούλ.
During the war between the house of Saul and the house of David, Abner had continued to strengthen his position in the house of Saul.
καὶ τῷ Σαοὺλ παλλακὴ Ῥεσφὰ θυγάτηρ Ἰάλ· καὶ εἶπεν Μεμφιβόσθε υἱὸς Σαοὺλ πρὸς Ἀβεννήρ Τί ὅτι εἰσῆλθες πρὸς τὴν παλλακὴν τοῦ πατρός μου;
Now Saul had a concubine named Rizpah, the daughter of Aiah. So Ish-bosheth questioned Abner, “Why did you sleep with my father’s concubine?”
καὶ ἐθυμώθη σφόδρα Ἀβεννὴρ περὶ τοῦ λόγου Μεμφιβόσθε καὶ εἶπεν Ἀβεννὴρ πρὸς αὐτόν Μὴ κεφαλὴ κυνὸς ἐγώ εἰμι ; ἐποίησα ἕλεος σήμερον μετὰ τοῦ οἴκου Σαοὺλ τοῦ πατρός σου κοὶ περὶ ἀδελφῶν καὶ γνωρίμων, καὶ οὐκ ηὐτομόλησα εἰς τὸν οἶκον Δαυείδ · καὶ ἐπιζητεῖς ἐπ’ ἐμὲ ὑπὲρ ἀδικίας γυναικὸς σήμερον ;
Abner was furious over Ish-bosheth’s accusation. “Am I the head of a dog that belongs to Judah?” he asked. “All this time I have been loyal to the house of your father Saul, to his brothers, and to his friends. I have not delivered you into the hand of David, but now you accuse me of wrongdoing with this woman!
τάδε ποιήσαι ὁ θεὸς τῷ Ἀβεννὴρ καὶ τάδε προσθείη αὐτῷ, ὅτι καθὼς ὤμοσεν Κύριος τῷ Δαυείδ, ὅτι οὕτως ποιήσω αὐτῷ ἐν τῇ ἡμέρᾳ ταύτῃ·
May God punish Abner, and ever so severely, if I do not do for David what the LORD has sworn to him:
ερπιελεῖν τὴν βασιλείαν ἀπὸ τοῦ οἴκου Σαοὐλ, καὶ τοῦ ἀναστῆσαι τὸν θρόνον Δαυεὶδ ἐπὶ Ἰσραὴλ καὶ ἐπὶ τὸν Ἰούδαν ἀπὸ Δὰν ἕως Βηβσάβεε.
to transfer the kingdom from the house of Saul and to establish the throne of David over Israel and Judah, from Dan to Beersheba.”
καὶ οὐκ ἠδυνάσθη ἔτι Μεμφιβόσθε ἀποκριθῆναι τῷ Ἀβεννὴρ ῥῆμα ἀπὸ τοῦ φοβεῖσθαι αὐτόν.
And for fear of Abner, Ish-bosheth did not dare to say another word to him.
Καὶ ἀπέστειλεν Ἀβεννὴρ ἀγγέλους πρὸς Δαυεὶδ εἰς θαιλὰμ οὗ ἦν παραχρῆμα λέγων διαθήκην σου μετ’ ἐμοῦ, καὶ ἰδοὺ ἡ χείρ μου μετὰ σο πρὸς σὲ πάντα τὸν οἶκον Ἰσραήλ.
Then Abner sent messengers on his behalf to say to David, “To whom does the land belong? Make your covenant with me, and surely my hand will be with you to bring all Israel over to you.”
καὶ εἶπεν Δαυείδ Ἐγὼ διαθήσομαι πρὸς σὲ διαθήκην, πλὴν λόγον ἕνα ἐγὼ αἰτοῦμαι παρὰ σοῦ λέγων οὐκ ὄψει τὸ πρόσωπον μου ἐὰν μὴ ἀγάγῃς τὴν θυγατέρα Σαοὐλ, παραγινομένου ἰδεῖν τὸ πρόσωπον μου.
“Good,” replied David, “I will make a covenant with you. But there is one thing I require of you: Do not appear before me unless you bring Saul’s daughter Michal when you come to see me.”
καὶ Δαυεὶδ πρὸς Μεμφιβόσθε υἱὸν Σαοὺλ ἀγγέλους λέγω μοι τὴν γυναῖκά μου τὴν μελχόλ, ἢν ἔλαβον ἐν ἑκατὸν ἀλλοφύλων ἀλλοφύλων,
Then David sent messengers to say to Ish-bosheth son of Saul, “Give me back my wife, Michal, whom I betrothed to myself for a hundred Philistine foreskins.”
καὶ ἀπέστειλεν Μεμφιβόσθε καὶ αὐτὴν παρὰ τοῦ ἀνδρὸς αὐτῆς, παρὰ Φαλτιὴλ υἱοῦ Σέλλης.
So Ish-bosheth sent and took Michal from her husband Paltiel (note: Paltiel is a variant of Palti; see 1 Samuel 25:44.) son of Laish.
καὶ ἐπορεύετο ὁ ἀνὴρ αὐτῆς μετ’ αὐτῆς κλαίων ὀπίσω αὐτῆς ἕως Βαρακεὶ καὶ εἰπεν πρὸς αὐτὸν Ἀβεννήρ Πορεύου, ἀνάστρεφε· καὶ ἀνέστρεψεν. στρεψεν.
Her husband followed her, weeping all the way to Bahurim. Then Abner said to him, “Go back.” So he returned home.
Καὶ εἶπεν Ἀβεννὴρ πρὸς τοὺς πρεσβυτέρους Ἰσραὴλ λέγων Ἐχθὲς καὶ τρίτην ἐζητεῖτε τὸν Δαυεὶδ βασιλεύειν ἐφ’ ὑμῶν.
Now Abner conferred with the elders of Israel and said, “In the past you sought David as your king.
καὶ νῦν ποιήσατε, ὅτι Κύριος ἐλάλησεν περὶ Δαυεὶδ λέγων Ἐν τοῦ δούλου μου Δαυεὶδ σώσω τὸν Ἰσραὴλ ἐκ χειρὸς ἀλλοφύλων καὶ ἐκ χειρὸς πόντων τῶν ἐχθρῶν αὐτῶν.
Now take action, because the LORD has said to David, ‘Through My servant David I will save My people Israel from the hands of the Philistines and of all their enemies.’”
καὶ ἐλάλησεν Ἀβεννὴρ τοῖς ὠσὶν Βενιαμείν, καὶ ἐπορεύθη Ἀβεννὴρ τοῦ λαλῆσαι εἰς τὰ ὦτα τοῦ Δαυεὶδ εἰς Χεβρὼν πάντα ὅσα ἤρεσεν ἐν ὀφθαλμοῖς Ι καὶ ἐν ὀφθαλμοῖς παντὸς οἴκου Βενιαμείν.
Abner also spoke to the Benjamites. Then he went to Hebron to tell David all that seemed good to Israel and to the whole house of Benjamin.
καὶ ἦλθεν πρὸς Δαυεὶδ εἰς Χεβρὼν καὶ μετ’ αὐτοῦ εἴκοσι ἄνδρες· καὶ Δαυεὶδ τῷ Ἀβεννὴρ καὶ τοῖς ἀνδράσιν τοῖς μετ’ αὐτοῦ πότον.
When Abner and twenty of his men came to David at Hebron, David held a feast for them.
καὶ εἶπεν Ἀβεννὴρ πρὸς Δαυείδ Ἀναστήσομαι δὴ καὶ πορεύσομαι, καὶ συναθροίσω πρὸς κύριόν μου τὸν βασιλέα πάντα Ἰσραήλ, καὶ διαθήσομαι μετ’ αὐτοῦ διαθήκην, καὶ βασιλεύσεις ἐπὶ πᾶσιν οἷς ἐπιθυμεῖ ἡ ψυχή σου. καὶ ἀπέστειλεν Δαυεὶδ τὸν Ἀβεννήρ, καὶ ἐπορεύθησαν ἐν εἰρήνῃ.
Then Abner said to David, “Let me go at once, and I will gather all Israel to my lord the king, that they may make a covenant with you, and that you may rule over all that your heart desires.” So David dismissed Abner, and he went in peace.
καὶ ἰδοὺ οἱ παῖδες Δαυεὶδ καὶ Ἰωὰβ παρεγίνοντο ἐκ τῆς ἐξοδίας, σκῦλα πολλὰ ἔφεραν μετ’ αὐτῶν· καὶ Αβεννὴρ οὐκ ἦν μετὰ Δαυεὶδ εἰς Χεβρών, ὅτι ἀπεστάλκει αὐτὸν καὶ ἀπεληλύθει ἐν εἰρήνῃ.
Just then David’s soldiers and Joab returned from a raid, bringing with them a great plunder. But Abner was not with David in Hebron, because David had sent him on his way in peace.
καὶ Ἰωὰβ καὶ πᾶσα ἡ στρατεία αὐτοῦ ἤχθησαν, καὶ ἀπηγγέλη τῷ Ἰωὰβ λέγοντες Ἥκει Ἀβεννὴρ υἱὸς Νὴρ πρὸς Δαυείδ, καὶ ἀπέσταλκεν αὐτὸν καὶ ἀπῆλθεν ἐν εἰρήνῃ.
When Joab and all his troops arrived, he was informed, “Abner son of Ner came to see the king, who sent him on his way in peace.”
καὶ εἰσῆλθεν Ἰωὰβ πρὸς τὸν βασιλέα καὶ εἶπεν Τί τοῦτο ἐποίησας; ἰδοὺ ἦλθεν Ἀβεννὴρ πρὸς σέ, καὶ ἵνα τί ἐξαπέσταλκας αὐτὸν καὶ ἀπελήλυθεν ἐν εἰρήνῃ ;
So Joab went to the king and said, “What have you done? Look, Abner came to you. Why did you dismiss him? Now he is getting away!
ἢ οὐκ οἶδας τὴν κακίαν Ἀβεννὴρ υἱοῦ Νήρ, ὅτι ἀπατῆσαί σε παρεγένετο καὶ γνῶναι τὴν ἔξοδόν σου καὶ τὴν εἴσοδόν σου καὶ γνῶναι ἅπαντα ὅσα σὺ ποιεῖς;
Surely you realize that Abner son of Ner came to deceive you and to track your movements and all that you are doing.”
καὶ ἀνέστρεψεν Ἰωὰβ ἀπὸ τοῦ Δαυεὶδ καὶ ἀπέστειλεν ς ὀπίσω Ἀβεννήρ, καὶ ἐπιστρέφουσιν αὐτὸν ἀπὸ τοῦ φρέατος τοῦ Σεειράμ· καὶ Δαυεὶδ οὐκ ᾔδει.
As soon as Joab had left David, he sent messengers after Abner, who brought him back from the well of Sirah. But David was unaware of it.
καὶ ἐπέστρεψεν τὸν Ἀβεννὴρ εἰς Χεβρών, καὶ ἐξέκλινεν αὐτὸν Ἰωὰβ ἐκ πλαγίων τῆς πύλης λαλῆσαι πρὸς αὐτόν, ἐνεδρεύων· καὶ ἐπάταξεν αὐτὸν ἐκεῖ εἰς τὴν ψόαν, καὶ ἀπέθανεν ἐν τῷ αἴματι Ἀσαὴλ τοῦ ἀδελφοῦ Ἰωάβ.
When Abner returned to Hebron, Joab pulled him aside into the gateway, as if to speak to him privately, and there Joab stabbed him in the stomach. So Abner died on account of the blood of Joab’s brother Asahel.
καὶ ἤκουσεν Δαυεὶδ μετὰ ταῦτα καὶ εἶπεν Ἀθῷός εἰμι ἐγὼ καὶ ἡ βασιλεία μου ἀπὸ κυρίου καὶ ἕως αἰῶνος ἀπὸ τῶν αἱμάτων Ἀβεννὴρ υἱοῦ Νήρ.
Afterward, David heard about this and said, “I and my kingdom are forever guiltless before the LORD concerning the blood of Abner son of Ner.
καταντησάτωσαν ἐπὶ κεφαλὴν Ἰωὰβ καὶ ἐπὶ πάντα τὸν οἶκον τοῦ πατρὸς αὐτοῦ, καὶ μὴ ἐκλίποι ἐκ τοῦ οἴκου Ἰωὰβ γονορρυὴς καὶ λεπρὸς καὶ κρατῶν σκυτάλης καὶ πίπτων ἐν ῥομφαίᾳ καὶ ἐλάσσου μένος ἄρτοις.
May it whirl over the head of Joab and over the entire house of his father, and may the house of Joab never be without one having a discharge or skin disease, or one who leans on a staff or falls by the sword or lacks food.”
Ἰωὰβ δὲ καὶ Ἀβεσσὰ ὁ ἀδελφὸς αὐτοῦ διεπαρετηροῦντο τὸν Ἀβεννὴρ ἀνθ’ ὧν ἐθανάτωσεν τὸν Ἀσαὴλ τὸν ἀδελφὸν αὐτῶν ἐν Γαβαὼν ἐν τῷ πολέμῳ.
(Joab and his brother Abishai murdered Abner because he had killed their brother Asahel in the battle at Gibeon.)
Καὶ εἶπεν Δαυεὶδ πρὸς Ἰωὰβ καὶ πρὸς πάντα τὸν λαὸν τὸν μετ’ αὐτοῦ Διαρρήξατε τὰ ἱμάτια ὑμῶν καὶ περιζώσασθε σάκκους καὶ κόπτεσθε ἐνώπιον Ἀβεννήρ· καὶ ὁ βασιλεὺς Δαυεὶδ ἐπορεύετο ὀπίσω τῆς κλίνης.
Then David ordered Joab and all the people with him, “Tear your clothes, put on sackcloth, and mourn before Abner.” And King David himself walked behind the funeral bier.
καὶ θάπτουσιν τὸν Ἀβεννὴρ εἰς Χεβρών· καὶ ἦρεν ὁ βασιλεὺς τὴν φωνὴν αὐτοῦ καὶ ἔκλαυσεν ἐπὶ τοῦ τάφου αὐτοῦ, καὶ ἔκλαυσεν πᾶς ὁλαὸς ἐπὶ Αβεννήρ.
When they buried Abner in Hebron, the king wept aloud at Abner’s tomb, and all the people wept.
καὶ ἐθρήνησεν ὁ βασιλεὺς ἐπὶ Ἀβεννὴρ καὶ εἶπεν Εἰ κατὰ τὸν θάνατον Ναβὰλἀποθανεῖται Ἀβεννήρ;
And the king sang this lament for Abner: “Should Abner die the death of a fool?
αὶ χεῖρές σου οὐκ ἐδέθησαν, οἱ πόδες σου οὐκ ἐν πέδαις. οὐ προσήγαγεν ὡς Ναβάλ, ἐνώπιον υἱῶν ἀδικίας ἔπεσας. καὶ συνήχθη πᾶς ὁ λαὸς τοῦ κλαῦσαι αὐτόν.
Your hands were not bound, your feet were not fettered. As a man falls before the wicked, so also you fell.” And all the people wept over him even more.
καὶ ἦλθεν πᾶς ὁ λαὸς περιδειπνῆσαι τὸν Δαυεὶδ ἄρτοις ἔτι οὔσης ἡμέρας· καὶ ὤμοσεν Δαυεὶδ λέγων τάδε ποιήσαι μοι ὁ θεὸς καὶ τάδε προσθείη, ὅτι ἐάν μὴ δύῃ ὁ ηλιος, οὐ μὴ γεύσωμαι ἄρτου ἢ ἀπὸ παντός τινος.
Then all the people came and urged David to eat something while it was still day, but David took an oath, saying, “May God punish me, and ever so severely, if I taste bread or anything else before the sun sets!”
καὶ ἔγων πᾶς λαός, καὶ ἤρεσεν ἐνώπιον αὐτῶν πάντα ὅσα ἐποίησεν ὁ ἐνώπιον τοῦ λαοῦ.
All the people took note and were pleased. In fact, everything the king did pleased them.
καὶ ἔγνω πᾶς ὁ λαὸς καὶ πᾶς ἡμέρᾳ ἐκείνη ὅτι οὐκ ἐγένετο παρὰ τοῦ βασιλέως θανατῶσαι τὸν Ἀβεννὴρ υἱὸν Νήρ.
So on that day all the troops and all Israel were convinced that the king had no part in the murder of Abner son of Ner.
Καὶ εἶπεν ὁ βασιλεὺς πρὸς τοὺς αὐτοῦ οὐκ οἴδατε ὅτι ἡγούμενος μέγας πέπτωκεν ἐν τῇ ἡμέρᾳ ταύτῃ ἐν τῷ Ἰσραήλ ;
Then the king said to his servants, “Do you not realize that a great prince has fallen today in Israel?
καὶ ὅτι ἐγώ εἰμι σήμερον συγγενής καὶ ὑπὸ βασιλέως; οἱ δὲ ἄνδρες οὗτοι υἱοὶ Σαρουίας σκληρότεροί μού εἰσιν·
And I am weak this day, though anointed as king, and these men, the sons of Zeruiah, are too fierce for me. May the LORD repay the evildoer according to his evil!”
