Und da das Jahr um kam, zur Zeit, wann die Könige pflegen auszuziehen, sandte David Joab und seine Knechte mit ihm das ganze Israel, dass sie die Kinder Ammon verderbten und Rabba belagerten. David aber blieb zu Jerusalem.
In the spring, at the time when kings march out to war, David sent out Joab and his servants with the whole army of Israel. They destroyed the Ammonites and besieged Rabbah, but David remained in Jerusalem.
Und es begab sich, dass David um den Abend aufstand von seinem Lager und ging auf dem Dach des Königshauses und sah vom Dach ein Weib sich waschen; und das Weib war sehr schöner Gestalt.
One evening David got up from his bed and strolled around on the roof of the palace. And from the roof he saw a woman bathing—a very beautiful woman.
Und David sandte hin und ließ nach dem Weibe fragen, und man sagte: Ist das nicht Bath-Seba, die Tochter Eliams, das Weib des Urias, des Hethiters?
So David sent and inquired about the woman, and he was told, “This is Bathsheba, the daughter of Eliam (note: Eliam is a variant of Ammiel; see 1 Chronicles 3:5.) and the wife of Uriah the Hittite.”
Und David sandte Boten hin und ließ sie holen. Und da sie zu ihm hineinkam, schlief er bei ihr. Sie aber reinigte sich von ihrer Unreinigkeit und kehrte wieder zu ihrem Hause.
Then David sent messengers to get her, and when she came to him, he slept with her. (Now she had just purified herself from her uncleanness.) Then she returned home.
Und das Weib ward schwanger und sandte hin und ließ David verkündigen und sagen: Ich bin schwanger geworden.
And the woman conceived and sent word to David, saying, “I am pregnant.”
David aber sandte zu Joab: Sende zu mir Uria, den Hethiter. Und Joab sandte Uria zu David.
At this, David sent orders to Joab: “Send me Uriah the Hittite.” So Joab sent him to David.
Und da Uria zu ihm kam, fragte David, ob es mit Joab und mit dem Volk und mit dem Streit wohl stünde?
When Uriah came to him, David asked how Joab and the troops were doing and how the war was going.
Und David sprach zu Uria: Gehe hinab in dein Haus und wasche deine Füße. Und da Uria zu des Königs Haus hinausging, folgte ihm nach des Königs Geschenk.
Then he said to Uriah, “Go down to your house and wash your feet.” So Uriah left the palace, and a gift from the king followed him.
Aber Uria legte sich schlafen vor der Tür des Königshauses, da alle Knechte seines Herrn lagen, und ging nicht hinab in sein Haus.
But Uriah slept at the door of the palace with all his master’s servants; he did not go down to his house.
Da man aber David ansagte: Uria ist nicht hinab in sein Haus gegangen, sprach David zu ihm: Bist du nicht über Feld hergekommen? Warum bist du nicht hinab in dein Haus gegangen?
And David was told, “Uriah did not go home.” “Haven’t you just arrived from a journey?” David asked Uriah. “Why didn’t you go home?”
Uria aber sprach zu David: Die Lade und Israel und Juda bleiben in Zelten, und Joab, mein Herr, und meines Herrn Knechte liegen im Felde, und ich sollte in mein Haus gehen, dass ich äße und tränke und bei meinem Weibe läge? So wahr du lebst und deine Seele lebt, ich tue solches nicht.
Uriah answered, “The ark and Israel and Judah are dwelling in tents (note: Or staying at Sukkoth), and my master Joab and his soldiers are camped in the open field. How can I go to my house to eat and drink and sleep with my wife? As surely as you live, and as your soul lives, I will not do such a thing!”
David sprach zu Uria: So bleibe auch heute hier; morgen will ich dich lassen gehen. So blieb Uria zu Jerusalem des Tages und des andern dazu.
“Stay here one more day,” David said to Uriah, “and tomorrow I will send you back.” So Uriah stayed in Jerusalem that day and the next.
Und David lud ihn, dass er vor ihm aß und trank, und machte ihn trunken. Aber des Abends ging er aus, dass er sich schlafen legte auf sein Lager mit seines Herrn Knechten, und ging nicht hinab in sein Haus.
Then David invited Uriah to eat and drink with him, and he got Uriah drunk. And in the evening Uriah went out to lie down on his cot with his master’s servants, but he did not go home.
Des Morgens schrieb David einen Brief an Joab und sandte ihn durch Uria.
The next morning David wrote a letter to Joab and sent it with Uriah.
Er schrieb aber also in den Brief: Stellt Uria an den Streit, da er am härtesten ist, und wendet euch hinter ihm ab, dass er erschlagen werde und sterbe.
In the letter he wrote: “Put Uriah at the front of the fiercest battle; then withdraw from him, so that he may be struck down and killed.”
Als nun Joab um die Stadt lag, stellte er Uria an den Ort, wo er wusste, dass streitbare Männer waren.
So as Joab besieged the city, he assigned Uriah to a place where he knew the strongest enemy soldiers were.
Und da die Männer der Stadt herausfielen und stritten wider Joab, fielen etliche des Volks von den Knechten Davids, und Uria, der Hethiter, starb auch.
And when the men of the city came out and fought against Joab, some of David’s servants fell, and Uriah the Hittite also died.
Da sandte Joab hin und ließ David ansagen allen Handel des Streits
Joab sent to David a full account of the battle
und gebot dem Boten und sprach: Wenn du allen Handel des Streits hast ausgeredet mit dem König
and instructed the messenger, “When you have finished giving the king a full account of the battle,
und siehst, dass der König sich erzürnt und zu dir spricht: Warum habt ihr euch so nahe zur Stadt gemacht mit dem Streit? Wisst ihr nicht, wie man pflegt von der Mauer zu schießen?
if the king’s anger flares, he may ask you, ‘Why did you get so close to the city to fight? Did you not realize they would shoot from atop the wall?
Wer schlug Abimelech, den Sohn Jerubbeseths? Warf nicht ein Weib einen Mühlstein auf ihn von der Mauer, dass er starb zu Thebez? Warum habt ihr euch so nahe zur Mauer gemacht? so sollst du sagen: Dein Knecht Uria, der Hethiter, ist auch tot.
Who struck Abimelech son of Jerubbesheth (note: Jerubbesheth is also known as Jerubbaal, that is, Gideon.)? Was it not a woman who dropped an upper millstone on him from the wall, so that he died in Thebez? Why did you get so close to the wall?’ If he asks you this, then you are to say, ‘Your servant Uriah the Hittite is dead as well.’”
Der Bote ging hin und kam und sagte an David alles, darum ihn Joab gesandt hatte.
So the messenger set out and reported to David all that Joab had sent him to say.
Und der Bote sprach zu David: Die Männer nahmen überhand wider uns und fielen zu uns heraus aufs Feld; wir aber waren an ihnen bis vor die Tür des Tors;
The messenger said to David, “The men overpowered us and came out against us in the field, but we drove them back to the entrance of the gate.
und die Schützen schossen von der Mauer auf deine Knechte und töteten etliche von des Königs Knechten; dazu ist Uria, der Hethiter, auch tot.
Then the archers shot at your servants from the wall, and some of the king’s servants were killed. And your servant Uriah the Hittite is dead as well.”
David sprach zum Boten: So sollst du zu Joab sagen: Lass dir das nicht übel gefallen; denn das Schwert frisst jetzt diesen, jetzt jenen. Fahre fort mit dem Streit wider die Stadt, dass du sie zerbrechest, und seid getrost.
Then David told the messenger, “Say this to Joab: ‘Do not let this matter upset you, for the sword devours one as well as another. Strengthen your attack against the city and demolish it.’ Encourage him with these words.”
Und da Urias Weib hörte, dass ihr Mann, Uria, tot war, trug sie Leid um ihren Eheherrn.
When Uriah’s wife heard that her husband was dead, she mourned for him.
Da sie aber ausgetrauert hatte, sandte David hin und ließ sie in sein Haus holen, und sie ward sein Weib und gebar ihm einen Sohn. Aber die Tat gefiel dem HErrn übel, die David tat.
And when the time of mourning was over, David had her brought to his house, and she became his wife and bore him a son. But the thing that David had done was evil in the sight of the LORD.
