Les fils des prophètes dirent à Elisée: « Voici que le lieu où nous sommes assis devant toi est trop étroit pour nous.
Now the sons of the prophets said to Elisha, “Please take note that the place where we meet with you is too small for us.
Allons jusqu'au Jourdain ; nous prendrons chacun une poutre, et nous nous y ferons un lieu où nous puissions l'habiter. » Elisée répondit : « Allez. »
Please let us go to the Jordan, where each of us can get a log so we can build ourselves a place to live there.” “Go,” said Elisha.
Et l'un d'eux dit : « Consens à venir avec tes serviteurs. » Il répondit : « J'irai » ;
Then one of them said, “Please come with your servants.” “I will come,” he replied.
et il partit avec eux. Arrivés au Jourdain, ils coupèrent du bois.
So Elisha went with them, and when they came to the Jordan, they began to cut down some trees.
Comme l'un d'eux abattait une poutre, le fer tomba dans l'eau ; il poussa un cri et dit : « Hélas ! mon seigneur !... et il était emprunté ! »
As one of them was cutting down a tree, the iron axe head fell into the water. “Oh, my master,” he cried out, “it was borrowed!”
L'homme de Dieu dit : « Où est-il tombé ? » Et il lui montra l'endroit. Alors Elisée coupa un morceau de bois, le jeta en cet endroit et le fer surnagea.
“Where did it fall?” asked the man of God. And when he showed him the place, the man of God cut a stick, threw it there, and made the iron float.
Et il dit : « Prends-le. » Il avança la main et le prit.
“Lift it out,” he said, and the man reached out his hand and took it.
Le roi de Syrie était en guerre avec Israël. Ayant tenu conseil avec ses serviteurs, il dit : « Mon camp sera dans tel et tel lieu. »
Now the king of Aram was at war against Israel. After consulting with his servants, he said, “My camp will be in such and such a place.”
Mais l'homme de Dieu envoya dire au roi d'Israël : « Garde-toi de traverser ce lieu, car les Syriens y descendent. »
Then the man of God sent word to the king of Israel: “Be careful not to pass by this place, for the Arameans are going down there.”
Et le roi d'Israël envoya des gens au lieu que lui avait dit et signalé l'homme de Dieu, et il s'y tint en garde, non pas une fois ni deux fois.
So the king of Israel sent word to the place the man of God had pointed out. Time and again Elisha warned the king, so that he was on his guard in such places.
Le cœur du roi de Syrie fut troublé de cette manœuvre ; il appela ses serviteurs et il leur dit : « Ne voulez-vous me faire connaître lequel des nôtres est pour le roi d'Israël ? »
For this reason the king of Aram became enraged and called his servants to demand of them, “Tell me, which one of us is on the side of the king of Israel?”
Un de ses serviteurs répondit : « Personne, ô roi, mon seigneur ; mais Elisée, le prophète, qui est en Israël, rapporte au roi d'Israël les paroles que tu prononces dans ta chambre à coucher. »
But one of his servants replied, “No one, my lord the king. For Elisha, the prophet in Israel, tells the king of Israel the very words you speak in your bedroom.”
Le roi dit : « Allez et voyez où il est, et je l'enverrai prendre. » On vint lui faire ce rapport : « Voici qu'il est à Dothan. »
So the king said, “Go and see where he is, that I may send men to capture him.” On receiving the report, “Elisha is in Dothan,”
Il envoya donc là des chevaux, des chars et une forte troupe, qui arrivèrent une nuit, et enveloppèrent la ville.
the king of Aram sent horses, chariots, and a great army. They went there by night and surrounded the city.
Le serviteur de l'homme de Dieu se leva de bon matin et sortit ; et voici qu'une troupe entourait la ville, avec des chevaux et des chars. Et le serviteur dit à Elisée : « Ah ! Mon seigneur, comment ferons-nous ? »
When the servant of the man of God got up and went out early in the morning, behold, an army with horses and chariots had surrounded the city. So he asked Elisha, “Oh, my master, what are we to do?”
Il répondit : « Ne crains rien ; car ceux qui sont avec nous sont en plus grand nombre que ceux qui sont avec eux. »
“Do not be afraid,” Elisha answered, “for those who are with us are more than those who are with them.”
Elisée pria et dit : « Yahweh, ouvre ses yeux, pour qu'il voie. » Et Yahweh ouvrit les yeux du serviteur, et il vit, et voici que la montagne était pleine de chevaux et de chars de feu, autour d'Elisée.
Then Elisha prayed, “O LORD, please open his eyes that he may see.” And the LORD opened the eyes of the young man, and he saw that the hills were full of horses and chariots of fire all around Elisha.
Les Syriens descendirent vers l'homme de Dieu. Elisée pria Yahweh et dit : « Daigne frapper d'aveuglement cette nation ! » Et Yahweh les frappa d'aveuglement, selon la parole d'Elisée.
As the Arameans came down against him, Elisha prayed to the LORD, “Please strike these people with blindness.” So He struck them with blindness, according to the word of Elisha.
Elisée leur dit : « Ce n'est pas ici le chemin, et ce n'est pas ici la ville ; suivez-moi et je vous conduirai vers l'homme que vous cherchez. » Et il les conduisit à Samarie.
And Elisha told them, “This is not the way, and this is not the city. Follow me, and I will take you to the man you are seeking.” And he led them to Samaria.
Lorsqu'ils furent entrés dans Samarie, Elisée dit : « Yahweh, ouvrez les yeux de ces gens pour qu'ils voient ! » Et Yahweh ouvrit leurs yeux, et ils virent, et voici qu'ils étaient au milieu de Samarie.
When they had entered Samaria, Elisha said, “O LORD, open the eyes of these men that they may see.” Then the LORD opened their eyes, and they looked around and discovered that they were in Samaria.
Le roi d'Israël, en les voyant, dit à Elisée : « Les frapperai-je, les frapperai-je, mon père ? »
And when the king of Israel saw them, he asked Elisha, “My father, shall I kill them? Shall I kill them?”
Et Elisée répondit : « Tu ne les frapperas point. Ceux que tu as faits prisonniers avec ton épée et ton arc, frappe-les ; mais place devant ceux-ci du pain et de l'eau, afin qu'ils mangent et boivent, et qu'ils s'en aillent ensuite vers leur maître. »
“Do not kill them,” he replied. “Would you kill those you have captured with your own sword or bow? Set food and water before them, that they may eat and drink and then return to their master.”
Le roi d'Israël leur fit servir un grand repas, et ils mangèrent et burent ; puis il les renvoya, et ils s'en allèrent vers leur maître. Et les bandes des Syriens ne revinrent plus sur le territoire d'Israël.
So the king prepared a great feast for them, and after they had finished eating and drinking, he sent them away, and they returned to their master. And the Aramean raiders did not come into the land of Israel again.
Après cela, Benhadad, roi de Syrie, ayant rassemblé toute son armée, monta et assiégea Samarie.
Some time later, Ben-hadad king of Aram assembled his entire army and marched up to besiege Samaria.
Il y eut une grande famine à Samarie ; et voici qu'on l'assiégeait si durement qu'une tête d'âne valait quatre-vingt sicles d'argent, et le quart d'un cab de fiente de pigeon cinq sicles d'argent.
So there was a great famine in Samaria. Indeed, they besieged the city so long that a donkey’s head sold for eighty shekels (note: 5 shekels is approximately 2 ounces or 57 grams of silver.)ss="annot-tooltip" tabindex="0" data-tooltip="80 shekels is approximately 2 pounds or 907.2 grams of silver." title="80 shekels is approximately 2 pounds or 907.2 grams of silver.">of silver (note: 80 shekels is approximately 2 pounds or 907.2 grams of silver.), and a quarter cab of dove’s dung (note: Or a quarter cab of seed pods; that is, approximately 0.28 dry quarts or 0.31 liters) sold for five shekels of silver.
Comme le roi passait sur la muraille, une femme cria vers lui en disant : « Sauve-moi, ô roi mon seigneur ! »
As the king of Israel was passing by on the wall, a woman cried out to him, “Help me, my lord the king!”
Il dit : « Si Yahweh ne te sauve pas, avec quoi pourrais-je te sauver ? Avec le produit de l'aire ou du pressoir ? »
He answered, “If the LORD does not help you, where can I find help for you? From the threshing floor or the winepress?”
Et le roi lui dit : « Qu'as-tu ? » Elle dit : « Cette femme m'a dit : Donne ton fils, nous le mangerons aujourd'hui, et demain nous mangerons le mien.
Then the king asked her, “What is the matter?” And she answered, “This woman said to me, ‘Give up your son, that we may eat him, and tomorrow we will eat my son.’
Nous avons donc fait cuire mon fils, et nous l'avons mangé. Et le jour suivant je lui ai dit : Donne ton fils et nous le mangerons. Mais elle a caché son fils. »
So we boiled my son and ate him, and the next day I said to her, ‘Give up your son, that we may eat him.’ But she had hidden her son.”
Lorsque le roi entendit les paroles de cette femme, il déchira ses vêtements en passant sur la muraille ; et le peuple vit, et voici qu'il avait par dessous un sac sur son corps.
When the king heard the words of the woman, he tore his clothes. And as he passed by on the wall, the people saw the sackcloth under his clothes next to his skin.
Le roi dit : « Que Dieu me traite dans toute sa rigueur, si la tête d'Elisée, fils de Saphat, reste aujourd'hui sur lui. »
He announced, “May God punish me, and ever so severely, if the head of Elisha son of Shaphat remains on his shoulders through this day!”
Or, pendant qu'Elisée était assis dans sa maison et que les anciens étaient assis auprès de lui, le roi envoya quelqu'un d'auprès de lui. Mais avant que le messager fut arrivé auprès d'Elisée, celui-ci dit aux anciens : « Savez-vous que ce fils d'assassin envoie quelqu'un pour m'ôter la tête ? Faites attention : quand le messager viendra, fermez la porte et pressez-le avec la porte. Mais le bruit des pas de son maître ne se fait-il pas entendre derrière lui ?... »
Now Elisha was sitting in his house, and the elders were sitting with him. The king sent a messenger ahead, but before he arrived, Elisha said to the elders, “Do you see how this murderer has sent someone to cut off my head? Look, when the messenger comes, shut the door to keep him out. Is not the sound of his master’s footsteps behind him?”
Il leur parlait encore, et déjà le messager était descendu vers lui ; et il dit : « Voici, c'est un mal qui vient de Yahweh ; qu'ai-je à espérer encore de Yahweh ? »
While Elisha was still speaking with them, the messenger came down to him. And the king said, “This calamity is from the LORD. Why should I wait for the LORD any longer?”
