Καὶ ἐγένετο ἐν ἔτει τρίτῳ τῷ Ὡσῆε υἱῷ Ἠλὰ βασιλεῖ Ἰσραὴλ ἐβασίλευσεν Ἐζεκίας υἱὸς Ἀχὰζ βασιλέως Ἰούδα.
In the third year of the reign of Hoshea son of Elah over Israel, Hezekiah son of Ahaz became king of Judah.
υἱὸς εἵκοσι καὶ πέντε ἐτῶν ἐν τῷ βασιλεύειον αὐτόν, καὶ εἴκοσι καὶ ἐννέα ἔτη ἐβασίλευσεν ἐν Ἰερουσαλήμ, καὶ ὄνομα τῇ μητρὶ αὐτοῦ Ἀβού, θυγάτηρ Ζαχαρίου.
He was twenty-five years old when he became king, and he reigned in Jerusalem twenty-nine years. His mother’s name was Abi (note: Abi is a variant of Abijah; see 2 Chronicles 29:1.), the daughter of Zechariah.
καὶ ἐποίησεν τὸ εὐθὲς ἐν ὀφθαλμοῖς Κυρίου κατὰ πάντα ὅσα ἐποίησεν Δαυεὶε ὁ πατὴρ αὐτοῦ.
And he did what was right in the eyes of the LORD, just as his father David had done.
αὐτὸς ἐξῆρεν τὰ ὑψηλά, καὶ συνέτριψεν τὰς στήλας, καὶ ἐξωλέθρευσεν τὰ ἀλση καὶ τὸν ὄφιν τὸν χαλκοῦν ὃν ἐποίησεν Μωυςῆς, ὅτι ἕως τῶν ἡμερῶν ἐκείνων ἦσαν οἱ υἱοὶ Ἰσραὴλ θυμιῶντες αὐτῷ. καὶ ἐκάλεσεν αὐτὸν Νεσθαλεί.
He removed the high places, shattered the sacred pillars, and cut down the Asherah poles. He also demolished the bronze snake called Nehushtan (note: Nehushtan sounds like the Hebrew for bronze and also for snake.) that Moses had made, for up to that time the Israelites had burned incense to it.
ἐν κυρίῳ θεῷ Ἰσραὴλ ἢλπισεν, καὶ μετ’αὐτὸν οὐκ ἐγενήθη ὄμοιος αὐτῷ ἐν βασιλεῦσιν Ἰούδα καὶ ἐν τοῖς γενομένοις ἔμπροσθεν αὐτοῦ.
Hezekiah trusted in the LORD, the God of Israel. No king of Judah was like him, either before him or after him.
καὶ ἐκολλήθη τῷ κυρίῳ, οὑκ ἀπέστη ὅπισθεν αὐτοῦ, καὶ ἐφύλαξεν τὰς ἐντολὰς αὐτοῦ ὅσας ἐνετείλατο Μωυςῇ.
He remained faithful to the LORD and did not turn from following Him; he kept the commandments that the LORD had given Moses.
καὶ ἦν Κύριος μετ’αὐτοῦ, καὶ ἐν πᾶσιν οἶς ἐποίει συνῆκεν. καὶ ἡθέτησεν ἐν τῷ βασιλεῖ Ἀσσυρίων, καὶ οὐκ ἐδούλευσεν αὐτῷ.
And the LORD was with Hezekiah, and he prospered wherever he went. He rebelled against the king of Assyria and refused to serve him.
αὐτὸς ἐπάταξεν τοὺς ἀλλοφύλους ἕως Γάξης καὶ ἕως ὁρίου αὐτῆς, ἀπὸ πύργου Φθλασσόντων καὶ ἕως πόλεως ὀχυρᾶς.
He defeated the Philistines as far as Gaza and its borders, from watchtower to fortified city.
καὶ ἐγένετο ἐν τῷ ἔτει τῷ τετάρτῳ βασιλεῖ Ἐξεκίᾳ, αὐτὸς ἐνιαυτὸς ὁ ἕβδομος τῷ Ὡσῆε υἱῷ Ἠλὰ βασιλεῖ Ἰσραήλ, ἀνέβη Σαλαμανάσσαρ βασιλεὺς Ἀσσυρίων ἐπὶ Σαμάρειαν καὶ ἐπολιόρκει ἐπ’αὐτήν.
In the fourth year of Hezekiah’s reign, which was the seventh year of the reign of Hoshea son of Elah over Israel, Shalmaneser king of Assyria marched against Samaria and besieged it.
καὶ κατελάβετο αὐτὴν ἀπὸ τἐλους τριῶν ἐτῶν ἐν ἔτει ἕκτῳ τῷ Ἑξεκίᾳ, αὐτὸς ἐνιαυτὸς ἔνατος τῷ Ὡσῆε βασιλεῖ Ἰσραήλ, καὶ συνελήμφθη Σαμάρεια.
And at the end of three years, the Assyrians captured it. So Samaria was captured in the sixth year of Hezekiah, which was the ninth year of Hoshea king of Israel.
καὶ ἀπᾠκισεν βασιλεὺς Ἀσσυρίων τὴν Σαμάρειαν εἰς Ἀσσυρίους, καὶ ἔθηκεν αὐτοὺς ἐν Ἁλάε καὶ ἐν Ἀβιὼρ ποταμῷ Γωξὰν καὶ Ὀρὴ Μήδων.
The king of Assyria exiled the Israelites to Assyria and settled them in Halah, in Gozan by the Habor River, and in the cities of the Medes.
ἀνθ’ ὧν ὅτι οὐκ ἤκουσαν τῆς Φωνῆς Κυρίου Θεοῦ αὐτῶν, καὶ παρέβησαν τὴν διαθήκην αὐτοῦ πάντα ὅσα ἐνετείλατο Μωςῆς ὁ δοῦλος Κυρίου, καὶ οὑκ ἥκουσαν καὶ οὐκ ἐποίησαν.
This happened because they did not listen to the voice of the LORD their God, but violated His covenant—all that Moses the servant of the LORD had commanded—and would neither listen nor obey.
Καὶ τῷ τεσσαρεσκαιδεκάῳ ἔτει βασιλεῖ Ἑζεκιοὺ ἀνέβη Σενναχηρεὶμ βασιλεὺς Ἀσσυρίων ἐπὶ τὰς πόλεις Ἰούδα τὰς ὀχυρὰς καὶ συνέλαβεν αὐτάς.
In the fourteenth year of Hezekiah’s reign, Sennacherib king of Assyria attacked and captured all the fortified cities of Judah.
καὶ ἀπέστελιεν Ἑζεκίας βασιλεὺς Ἰούδα ἀγγέ λους πρὸς βασιλέα Ἀσσυρίων εἰς Δαχεὶς λέγων Ἡμάρτηκα, ἁποστράΦητι ἀπ’ἐμοῦ. ὃ ἐὰν ἐπιθῇς ἐπ’ἐμὲ βαστάσω. καὶ ἐπέθηκεν ὁ βασιλεὺς Ἀσσυρίων ἐπὶ Ἑξεκίαν βασιλέα Ἰούδα τριακόσια τάλαντα ἀργυρίου καὶ τριάκοντα τάλαντα χρυσίου.
So Hezekiah king of Judah sent word to the king of Assyria at Lachish, saying, “I have done wrong; withdraw from me, and I will pay whatever you demand from me.” And the king of Assyria exacted from Hezekiah king of Judah three hundred talents of silver (note: 300 talents is approximately 11.3 tons or 10.3 metric tons of silver.) and thirty talents of gold (note: 30 talents is approximately 1.13 tons or 1.03 metric tons of gold.).
καὶ ἔδωκεν Ἑξεκίας πᾶν τὸ ἀργύριον
Hezekiah gave him all the silver that was found in the house of the LORD and in the treasuries of the royal palace.
ἐν τῷ καιρῷ ἐκείνῳ συνέκοψεν Ἑζεκίας τὰς θύρας ναοῦ καὶ τὰ ἐστηριγμένα ἃ ἐχρύσωσεν Ἑζεκίας βασιλεὺς Ἰούδα, καὶ ἔδωκεν αὐτὰ βασιλεῖ Ἀσσυῤίων.
At that time Hezekiah stripped the gold with which he had plated the doors and doorposts of the temple of the LORD, and he gave it to the king of Assyria.
Καὶ ἀπέστειλεν βασιλεὺς Ἀσσυρίων τὸν θανθὰν καὶ τὸν Ῥαφεὶς καὶ τὸν Ῥαψάκην ἐκ Λαχεὶς πρὸς τὸν βασιλέα Ἑζεκίαν ἐν δυνάμει βαρείᾳ ἐπὶ Ἰερουσαλήμ· καὶ ἀνέβησαν καὶ ἦλθον εἰς Ἰερουσαλήμ, καὶ ἔστησαν ἐν τῷ ὑδραγωγῷ τῆς κολυμβήθρας τῆς ἄνω ἥ ἐστιν ἐν τῇ ὁδῷ τοῦ ἀγροῦ τοῦ γναφέως.
Nevertheless, the king of Assyria sent the Tartan (note: Hebrew Tartan is the title of a field marshal, general, or commander in the Assyrian military.), the Rabsaris (note: Hebrew Rabsaris is the title of the chief eunuch in the Assyrian military.), and the Rabshakeh (note: Hebrew Rabshakeh is the title of a high-ranking Assyrian military officer; here and throughout chapters 18 and 19, as well as Isaiah 36 and 37.), along with a great army, from Lachish to King Hezekiah at Jerusalem. They advanced up to Jerusalem and stationed themselves by the aqueduct of the upper pool, on the road to the Launderer’s Field.
καὶ ἐβόησαν πρὸς Ἑζεκίαν, καὶ ἦλθον πρὸς αὐτὸν Ἐλιακεὶμ νἰὸς Χελκίου ὁ οἰκονόμος καὶ Σόμνας ὁ γραμματεὺς καὶ Ἰωσαφὰτ ὁ ἀναμιμνήσκων.
Then they called for the king. And Eliakim son of Hilkiah the palace administrator, Shebnah the scribe, and Joah son of Asaph the recorder, went out to them.
καὶ εἶπεν πρὸς αὐτοὺς Ῥαψάκης Εἴπατε δὴ πρὸς Ἑζεκίαν Τάδε λέγει ὀ βασιλεὺς ὀ μεγας βασιλεὺς Ἀσσυρίων Τί ἡ πεποίθησις αὕτη ἣν πέποιθας;
The Rabshakeh said to them, “Tell Hezekiah that this is what the great king, the king of Assyria, says: What is the basis of this confidence of yours?
εἶπας, πλὴν λόγοι χειλέων Βουλὴ καὶ δύναμις εὶς πόλεμον· νῦν οὖν τίνι πεποιθὼς ἠθέτησας ἐν ἐμοί;
You claim to have a strategy and strength for war, but these are empty words. In whom are you now trusting, that you have rebelled against me?
νῦν ἰδοὺ πέποιθας σαυτῷ ἐπὶ τὴν ῥάβδον τὴν καλαμίνην τὴν τεθλασμένην ταύτην, ἐπ’ Αἴγυπτον· ὃς ἂν στηριχθῇ ἀνὴρ ἐπ’ αὐτήν, καὶ εἰσελεύσεται εἰς τὴν χεὶρα αὐτοῦ, καὶ τρήσει αὐτήν· οὕτως Φαραὼ βασιλεὺς Αἰγύπτου πᾶσιν τοῖς πεποιθόσιν ἐπ’ αὐτόν.
Look now, you are trusting in Egypt, that splintered reed of a staff that will pierce the hand of anyone who leans on it. Such is Pharaoh king of Egypt to all who trust in him.
καὶ ὅτι εἶπας πρὸς μέ Ἐπὶ Κύριον θεὸν πεποίθαμεν· οὐχὶ αὐτὸς οὖτος ἀπέστησεν Ἑζεκίας τὰ ὑψηλὰ αὐτοῦ καὶ τὰ θυσιαστήρια αὐτοῦ, καὶ εἶπεν τῷ Ἰούδᾳ καὶ τῇ Ἰερουσαλήμ Ἐνώπιον τοῦ θυσιαστηρίου τούτου προσκυνήσετε ἐν Ἰερουσαλήμ;
But if you say to me, ‘We trust in the LORD our God,’ is He not the One whose high places and altars Hezekiah has removed, saying to Judah and Jerusalem: ‘You must worship before this altar in Jerusalem’?
καὶ νῦν μίχθητε δὴ τῷ κυρίῳ μου βασιλεῖ Ἀσσυρίων, καὶ δώσω σοι δισχιλίους ἵππους, εἰ δυνήσῃ δοῦναι σεαυτῷ ἐπιβάτας ἐπ’ αὐτούς.
Now, therefore, make a bargain with my master, the king of Assyria. I will give you two thousand horses—if you can put riders on them!
καὶ πῶς ἀποστρέψετε τὸ πρόσωπον τοπάρχου ἑνὸς τῶν δούλων τοῦ κυρίου μου τῶν ἐλαχίστων; καὶ ἤλπισας σαυτῷ ἐπ’ Αἴγυπτον εἰς ἅρματα καὶ ἱππεῖς.
For how can you repel a single officer among the least of my master’s servants when you depend on Egypt for chariots and horsemen?
καὶ νῦν μὴ ἄνευ Κυρίου ἀνέβημεν ἐπὶ τὸν τόπον τοῦτον διαφθεῖραι αὐτόν; Κύριος εἶπεν πρὸς μέ Ἀνάβηθι ἐπὶ τὴν γὴν ταύτην καὶ διάφθειρον αὐτήν.
So now, was it apart from the LORD that I have come up against this place to destroy it? The LORD Himself said to me, ‘Go up against this land and destroy it.’”
καὶ εἶπεν Ἐλιακεὶμ οἱὸς Χελκείου καὶ Σόμνας καὶ Ἰώας πρὸς Ῥαψάκην Λάλησον δὴ πρὸς τοὺς τοὺς παῖδάς σου Συριστί· ἀκούομεν ἡμεῖς, καὶ οὐ λαλήσεις μεθ’ ἡμῶν Ἰουδαιστί· καὶ ἵνα τί λαλεῖς ἐν τοῖς ὠσὶν τοῦ λαοῦ τοῦ ἐπὶ τοῦ τείχους;
Then Eliakim son of Hilkiah, along with Shebnah and Joah, said to the Rabshakeh, “Please speak to your servants in Aramaic, since we understand it. Do not speak with us in Hebrew (note: Or in the dialect of Judah; also in verse 28) in the hearing of the people on the wall.”
καὶ εἶπεν πρὸς αὐτοὺς Ῥαψακης Μὴ ἐπὶ τὸν κύριόν σου καὶ πρὸς σὲ ἀπέστειλέν με ὁ κύριός μου λαλῆσαι τοὺς λόγους τούτους; οὐχὶ ἐπὶ τοὺς ανδρας τοὺς καθημένους ἐπὶ τοῦ τείχους, τοῦ Φαγεῖν τὴν κόπρον αἠτῶν καὶ πιεὶν τὸ οὖρον αὐτῶν μεθ’ ὑμῶν ἅμα;
But the Rabshakeh replied, “Has my master sent me to speak these words only to you and your master, and not to the men sitting on the wall, who are destined with you to eat their own dung and drink their own urine?”
καὶ .ἔστη Ῥαψάκης καὶ ἐβόησεν μεγάλῃ Ἰουδαιστί· καὶ ἐλάλησεν καὶ εἶπεν Ἀκούσατε τοὺς λόγους τοῦ μεγάλου βασιλέως Ἀσσυρίων
Then the Rabshakeh stood and called out loudly in Hebrew: “Hear the word of the great king, the king of Assyria!
Τάδε λέγει ὁ βασιλεύς Μὴ ἐπαιρέτω ὑμᾶς Ἑζεκίας λόγοις, ὅτι οὐ μὴ δύνηται ὑμᾶς ἐξελέσθαι ἐκ χειρὸς αὐτοῦ.
This is what the king says: Do not let Hezekiah deceive you; he cannot deliver you from my hand.
καὶ μὴ ἐπελπιζέτω ὑμᾶς Ἐςεκίας πρὸς Κύριον λέγων Ἐξαιρούμενος ἐξελεῖται Κύριος· οὐ μὴ παραδοθῇ ἡ πόλις αὔτη ἐν χειρὶ βασιλέως Ἀσσυρίων.
Do not let Hezekiah persuade you to trust in the LORD when he says, ‘The LORD will surely deliver us; this city will not be given into the hand of the king of Assyria.’
μὴ ἀκούετε Ἑζεκίου, ὅτι τάδε λέγει ὁ βασιλεὺς Ἀσσυρίων Ποιήσατε μετ’ ἐμοῦ εὐλογίαν καὶ ἐξέλθατε πρὸς μέ, καὶ πίεται ἀνὴρ τὴν ἄμπελον αὐτοῦ, καὶ ἀνὴρ τὴν συκὴν αὐτοῦ Φάγεται, καὶ πίεται ὕδωρ τοῦ λάκκου αὐτοῦ,
Do not listen to Hezekiah, for this is what the king of Assyria says: Make peace with me (note: Or Make a blessing with me) and come out to me. Then every one of you will eat from his own vine and his own fig tree and drink water from his own cistern,
ἕως ἔλθω καὶ λάβω ὑμᾶς εἰς γῆν ὡς γῆ ὑμῶν, σίτου καὶ οἴνου καὶ ἄρτου καὶ ἀμπελώνων, γῆ έλαίας ἐλαίου καὶ μέλιτος· καὶ ζήσετε καὶ οὐ μὴ ἀποθάνητε. καὶ μὴ ἀκούετε Ἑζεκίου, ὅτι ἀπατᾷ ὑμᾶς λέγων Κύριος ῥύσεται ὑμᾶς.
until I come and take you away to a land like your own—a land of grain and new wine, a land of bread and vineyards, a land of olive trees and honey—so that you may live and not die. But do not listen to Hezekiah, for he misleads you when he says, ‘The LORD will deliver us.’
μὴ ῥυόμενοι ἐρύσαντο οἱ θεοὶ τῶν ἐθνῶν ἕκαστιος τὴν ἑαυτοῦ χώραν ἐκ χειρός βασιλέως Ἀσσυρίων;
Has the god of any nation ever delivered his land from the hand of the king of Assyria?
ποῦ ἐστιν ὁ θεὸς Αἱμὰθ καὶ Ἀρφάλ ; ποῦ ἔστιν ὁ θεὸς Σεπφαρουμάιν ; καὶ ὅτι ἐξείλαντο Σαμάρειαν ἐκ χειρός μου ;
Where are the gods of Hamath and Arpad? Where are the gods of Sepharvaim, Hena, and Ivvah? Have they delivered Samaria from my hand?
τίς ἐν πᾶσιν τοῖς θεοῖς τῶν γαιῶν οἳ ἐξεἰλαντο τὰς γᾶς αὐτῶν ἐκ χειρός μου, ὄτι ἐξελεῖται Κύριος τὴν Ἰερουσαλὴμ ἐκ χειρός μου ;
Who among all the gods of these lands has delivered his land from my hand? How then can the LORD deliver Jerusalem from my hand?”
καὶ ἐκώφευσαν καὶ οὐκ ἀπεκρίθησαν αὐτῷ λόγον, ὄτι ἐντολὴ τοῦ βασιλέως λέγων Οὐκ ἀποκριθήσεσθε αὐτῷ.
But the people remained silent and did not answer a word, for Hezekiah had commanded, “Do not answer him.”
καὶ εἰσῆλθεν Ἐλιακεὶμ υἱὸς χελκείου ὁ οἰκονόμος καὶ Σόμνας ὁ γραμματεὺς καὶ Ἰώας υἱὸς Σαφὰν ὁ ἀναμιμνήσκων πρὸς τὸν Ἑζεκίαν διερρηχότες τὰ ἱμάτια, καὶ
Then Hilkiah’s son Eliakim the palace administrator, Shebna the scribe, and Asaph’s son Joah the recorder came to Hezekiah with their clothes torn, and they relayed to him the words of the Rabshakeh.
