ἐν ἔτει ἑβδόμῳ τῷ Εἰοὺ ἐβασίλευσεν Ἰωάς, καὶ τεσσεράκοντα ἔτη ἐβασίλευσεν ἐν Ἰερουσαλήν, καὶ ὄνομα τῆς μητρὸς αὐτοῦ Ἀβιὰ ἐκ γῆς Βηρσάβεε.
In the seventh year of Jehu, Joash (note: Hebrew Jehoash, a variant of Joash (son of Ahaziah); also in verses 2, 4, 6, 7, and 18; see 2 Kings 11:2.) became king, and he reigned in Jerusalem forty years. His mother’s name was Zibiah; she was from Beersheba.
καὶ ἐποίησεν Ἰωὰς τὸ εὐθὲς ἐνώπιον Κυρίου πάσας τὰς ἡμέρας ἄς ἐφώτισεν αὐτὸν Ἰωδᾶε ὁ ἱερεύς.
And Joash did what was right in the eyes of the LORD all the days he was instructed by Jehoiada the priest.
πλὴν τῶν ὑψηλῶν οὐ μετεστάθησαν, καὶ ἐκεῖ ἔτι ὁ λαὸς ἐθυσίασαν καὶ ἐθυμίων ἐν τοῖς ὑψηλοῖς.
Nevertheless, the high places were not removed; the people continued sacrificing and burning incense there.
Καὶ εἶπεν Ἰωὰς πρὸς τοὺς ἱερεῖς Πᾶν τὸ ἀργύριον τῶν ἁγίων τὸ εἰσοδιαζόμενον ἐν τῷ οἴκῳ Κυρίου ἀργύριον συντιμήσεως, ἀνὴρ ἀργύριον λαβὼν συντιμήσεως, πᾶν ἀργύριον ὅ ἐὰν λάβη ἐπὶ καρδίαν ἀνδρὸς ἐνεγκεῖν ἐν οἴκῳ Κυρίου,
Then Joash said to the priests, “Collect all the money brought as sacred gifts into the house of the LORD—the census money, the money from vows, and the money brought voluntarily into the house of the LORD.
λαβέτωσαν ἑαυτοῖς οἱ ἱερεῖς ἀνὴρ ἀνὴρ ἀπὸ τῆς πράσεως αὐτοῦ, καὶ αὐτοὶ κρατήσουσιν τὸ βέδεκ τοῦ οἴκου εἰς πάντα οὗ ἐὰν εὑρεθῇ ἐκεῖ βέδεκ.
Let every priest receive it from his constituency, and let it be used to repair any damage found in the temple.”
καὶ ἐγενήθη ἐν τῷ εἰκοστῷ καὶ τρίτῳ ἔτει τῷ βασιλεῖ Ἰωὰς οὐκ ἐκραταίωσαν οἱ ἱερεῖς τὸ βέδεκ τοῦ οἴκου.
By the twenty-third year of the reign of Joash, however, the priests had not yet repaired the damage to the temple.
καὶ ἐκάλεσεν Ἰωὰς ὁ βασιλεὺς Ἰωδᾶε τὸν ἱερέα καὶ τοὺς ἱερεῖς, καὶ εἶπεν πρὸς αὐτούς Τί ὅτι οὐκ ἐκραταιοῦτε τὸ βέδεκ τοῦ οἴκου ; καὶ νῦν μὴ λάβητε ἀργύριον ἀπὸ τῶν πράσεων ὑμῶν, ὅτι εἰς τὸ οἴκου τοῦ οἴκου δώσετε αὐτό.
So King Joash called Jehoiada and the other priests and said, “Why have you not repaired the damage to the temple? Now, therefore, take no more money from your constituency, but hand it over for the repair of the temple.”
καὶ συνεφώνησαν οἱ ἱερεῖς τοῦ μὴ λαβεῖν ἀργύριον παρὰ τοῦ λαοῦ καὶ τοῦ μὴ ἐνισχῦσαι τὸ βδέλυγμα τοῦ οἴκου.
So the priests agreed that they would not receive money from the people and that they would not repair the temple themselves.
καὶ ἔλαβεν Ἰωδᾶε ὁ ἱερεὺς κιβωτὸν μίαν, καὶ ἔτρησεν τρώγλην ἐν τῇ τρώγλη αὐτῆς, καὶ ἔδωκεν αὐτὴν παρὰ ἰαμειβεὶν ἐν τῷ οἴκῳ ἀνδρός, οἴκῳ Κυρίου· καὶ ἔδωκαν οἱ ἱερεῖς οἱ φυλάσσοντες τὸν σταθμὸν πᾶν τὸ ἀργύριον τὸ εὑρεθὲν ἐν οἴκῳ Κυρίου.
Then Jehoiada the priest took a chest, bored a hole in its lid, and set it beside the altar on the right side as one enters the house of the LORD. There the priests who guarded the threshold put all the money brought into the house of the LORD.
καὶ ἐγένετο ὡς εἶδεν ὅτι πολὺ τὸ ἀργύριον ἐν τῇ κιβωτῷ, καὶ ἀνέβη ὁ γραμματεὺς τοῦ βασιλέως καὶ ὁ ἱερεὺς ὁ μέγας, καὶ ἔσφιγξαν καὶ ἠρίθμησαν τὸ ἀργύριον τὸ εὑρεθὲν ἐν οἴκῳ Κυρίου.
Whenever they saw that there was a large amount of money in the chest, the royal scribe and the high priest would go up, count the money brought into the house of the LORD, and tie it up in bags.
καὶ ἔδωκεν τὸ ἀργύριον τὸ ἑτοιμασθὲν ἐπὶ χεῖρας ποιούντων τὰ ἐργα τῶν έπισκόπων οἴκου Κυρίου· καὶ ἐξέδοσαν τοῖς τέκτοσιν τῶν ξύλων καὶ τοῖς οἰκοδόμοις τοῖς ποιοῦσιν ἐν οἴκῳ Κυρίου
Then they would put the counted money into the hands of those who supervised the work on the house of the LORD, who in turn would pay those doing the work—the carpenters, builders,
καὶ τοῖς τειχισταῖς καὶ τοῖς λατόμοις τῶν λίθων, τοῦ κτήσασθαι ξύλα καὶ λίθους λίθους λατομητοὺς τοῦ κατασχεῖν τὸ βέδεκ οἴκου Κυρίου, εἰς πάντα ὅσα ἐξωδιάσθη ἐπὶ τὸν οἶκον τοῦ κραταιῶσαι.
masons, and stonecutters. They also purchased timber and dressed stone to repair the damage to the house of the LORD, and they paid the other expenses of the temple repairs.
πλὴν οὐ ποιηθήσεται οἴκῳ Κυρίου θύραι ἀργυραῖ, ἧλοι, φιάλαι καὶ σάλπιγγες, πᾶν σκεῦος χρυσοῦν καὶ σκεῦος ἀργυροῦν, ἐκ τοῦ ἀργυρίου τοῦ εἰσενεχθέντος ἐν οἴκῳ Κυρίου·
However, the money brought into the house of the LORD was not used for making silver basins, wick trimmers, sprinkling bowls, trumpets, or any articles of gold or silver for the house of the LORD.
ὄτι τοῖς ποιοῦσιν τὰ ἔργα δώσουσιν αὐτό. καὶ ἐκραταίωσαν ἐν αὐτῷ τὸν οἶκον Κυρίου.
Instead, it was paid to those doing the work, and with it they repaired the house of the LORD.
καὶ οὐκ ἐξελογίζοντο τοὺς ἄνδρας οἷς ἐδίδουν τὸ ἀργύριον ἐπὶ χεῖρας αὐτῶν δοῦναι τοῖς ποιοῦσιν τὰ ἔργα, ὄτι ἐν πίστει αὐτῶν ποιοῦσιν.
No accounting was required from the men who received the money to pay the workmen, because they acted with integrity.
ἀργύριον ἀργύριον περὶ ἁμαρτίας καὶ ἀργύριον περὶ πλημμελείας, ὅ τι εἰσηνέχθη ἐν οἴκῳ Κυρίου, τοῖς ἱερεῦσιν ἐγένετο.
The money from the guilt offerings and sin offerings was not brought into the house of the LORD; it belonged to the priests.
Τότε ἀνέβη Ἁζαὴλ βασιλεὺς Συρίας καὶ ἐπολέμησεν ἐπὶ Γέθ, καὶ προκατελάβετο ἔταξεν Ἁζαὴλ τὸ πρόσωπον αὐτοῦ ἀναβῆναι ἐπὶ Ἰερουσαλήμ.
At that time Hazael king of Aram marched up and fought against Gath and captured it. Then he decided to attack Jerusalem.
καὶ ἔλαβεν Ἰωὰς βασιλεὺς Ἰούδα πάντα τὰ ἄγια ὅσα ἡγίασεν καὶ Ἰωρὰμ καὶ Ὀχοζείας, οἱ πατέρες αὐτοῦ καὶ βασιλεῖς καὶ τὰ ἅγια αὐτοῦ καὶ πᾶν τὸ χρυσίον τὸ εὑρεθὲν ἐν οἴκου Κυρίου καὶ οἴκου τοῦ βασιλέως, καὶ ἀπέστειλεν βασιλεῖ Συρίας· καὶ ἀνέβη ἀπὸ Ἰερουσαλήμ.
So King Joash of Judah took all the sacred objects dedicated by his fathers—Jehoshaphat, Jehoram, and Ahaziah, the kings of Judah—along with his own consecrated items and all the gold found in the treasuries of the house of the LORD and the royal palace, and he sent them to Hazael king of Aram. So Hazael withdrew from Jerusalem.
καὶ τὰ λοιπὰ τῶν λόγων Ἰωὰς καὶ πάντα ὅσα ἐποίησεν, οὐκ ἰδοὺ ταῦτα γεγραμμένα ἐπὶ βιβλίῳ λόγων τῶν ἡμερῶν τοῖς βασιλεῦσιν Ἰούδα,
As for the rest of the acts of Joash, along with all his accomplishments, are they not written in the Book of the Chronicles of the Kings of Judah?
καὶ ἀνέστησαν οἱ δοῦλοι αὐτοῦ καὶ ἔδησαν πάντα δεσμόν, καὶ ἐπάταξαν τὸν Ἰωὰς ἐν οἴκῳ Μααλὼ τὸν Γααλλά.
And the servants of Joash rose up and formed a conspiracy and killed him at Beth-millo, on the road down to Silla.
καὶ υἱὸς Ἰεμουὰθ καὶ Ἰεζεβοὺθ ὁ υἱὸς αὐτοῦ Σωμὴρ οἱ δοῦλοι ἐπάταξαν αὐτόν, καὶ ἀπέθανέν· καὶ ἔθαψαν αὐτὸν μετὰ τῶν πατέρων αὐτοῦ ἐν πὁλει Δαυείδ· καὶ ἐβασίλευσεν Ἀμεσσείας υἱὸς αὐτοῦ ἀντ’ αὐτοῦ.
His servants Jozabad (note: Hebrew; LXX and Syriac Jozacar) son of Shimeath and Jehozabad son of Shomer (note: Shomer is a variant of Shimrith; see 2 Chronicles 24:26.) struck him down, and he died. And they buried him with his fathers in the City of David, and his son Amaziah reigned in his place.
