Ich tue euch kund, liebe Brüder, die Gnade Gottes, die in den Gemeinden in Mazedonien gegeben ist.
Now, brothers, we want you to know about the grace that God has given the churches of Macedonia.
Denn ihre Freude war überschwenglich, da sie durch viel Trübsal bewährt wurden; und wiewohl sie sehr arm sind, haben sie doch reichlich gegeben in aller Einfalt.
In the terrible ordeal they suffered, their abundant joy and deep poverty overflowed into rich generosity.
Denn nach allem Vermögen (das bezeuge ich) und über Vermögen waren sie willig
For I testify that they gave according to their ability and even beyond it. Of their own accord,
und baten uns mit vielem Zureden, dass wir aufnähmen die Wohltat und Gemeinschaft der Handreichung, die da geschieht den Heiligen;
they earnestly pleaded with us for the privilege of sharing in this service to the saints.
und nicht, wie wir hofften, sondern sie ergaben sich selbst, zuerst dem Herrn und darnach uns, durch den Willen Gottes,
And not only did they do as we expected, but they gave themselves first to the Lord and then to us, through the will of God.
dass wir mussten Titus ermahnen, auf dass er, wie er zuvor angefangen hatte, also auch unter euch solche Wohltat ausrichtete.
So we urged Titus to help complete your act of grace, just as he had started it.
Aber gleichwie ihr in allen Stücken reich seid, im Glauben und im Wort und in der Erkenntnis und in allerlei Fleiß und in eurer Liebe zu uns, also schaffet, dass ihr auch in dieser Wohltat reich seid.
But just as you (note: Or in your love for us) excel in everything—in faith, in speech, in knowledge, in complete earnestness, and in the love we inspired in you—see that you also excel in this grace of giving.
Nicht sage ich, dass ich etwas gebiete; sondern, dieweil andere so fleißig sind, versuche ich auch eure Liebe, ob sie rechter Art sei.
I am not giving a command, but I am testing the sincerity of your love through the earnestness of others.
Denn ihr wisset die Gnade unsres Herrn Jesu Christi, dass, ob er wohl reich ist, ward er doch arm um euretwillen, auf dass ihr durch seine Armut reich würdet.
For you know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, that though He was rich, yet for your sake He became poor, so that you through His poverty might become rich.
Und meine Meinung hierin gebe ich; denn solches ist euch nützlich, die ihr angefangen habt vom vorigen Jahre her nicht allein das Tun, sondern auch das Wollen;
And this is my opinion about what is helpful for you in this matter: Last year you were the first not only to give, but even to have such a desire.
nun aber vollbringet auch das Tun, auf dass, gleichwie da ist ein geneigtes Gemüt, zu wollen, so sei auch da ein geneigtes Gemüt, zu tun von dem, was ihr habt.
Now finish the work, so that you may complete it with the same eager desire, according to your means.
Denn so einer willig ist, so ist er angenehm, nach dem er hat, nicht nach dem er nicht hat.
For if the eagerness is there, the gift is acceptable according to what one has, not according to what he does not have.
Nicht geschieht das in der Meinung, dass die andern Ruhe haben, und ihr Trübsal, sondern dass es gleich sei.
It is not our intention that others may be relieved while you are burdened, but that there may be equality.
So diene euer Überfluss ihrem Mangel diese teure Zeit lang, auf dass auch ihr Überfluss hernach diene eurem Mangel und ein Ausgleich geschehe;
At the present time, your surplus will meet their need, so that in turn their surplus will meet your need. This way there will be equality.
wie geschrieben steht: „Der viel sammelte, hatte nicht Überfluss, der wenig sammelte, hatte nicht Mangel.”
As it is written: “He who gathered much had no excess, and he who gathered little had no shortfall (note: Exodus 16:18).”
Gott aber sei Dank, der solchen Eifer für euch gegeben hat in das Herz des Titus.
But thanks be to God, who put into the heart of Titus the same devotion I have for you.
Denn er nahm zwar die Ermahnung an; aber dieweil er fleißig war, ist er von selber zu euch gereist.
For not only did he welcome our appeal, but he is eagerly coming to you of his own volition.
Wir haben aber einen Bruder mit ihm gesandt, der das Lob hat am Evangelium durch alle Gemeinden.
Along with Titus we are sending the brother who is praised by all the churches for his work in the gospel.
Nicht allein aber das, sondern er ist auch verordnet von den Gemeinden zum Gefährten unsrer Fahrt in dieser Wohltat, welche durch uns ausgerichtet wird dem Herrn zu Ehren und zum Preis eures guten Willens.
More than that, this brother was chosen by the churches to accompany us with the gracious offering we administer (note: See 1 Corinthians 16:3–4.) to honor the Lord Himself and to show our eagerness to help.
Also verhüten wir, dass uns nicht jemand übel nachreden möge solcher reichen Steuer halben, die durch uns ausgerichtet wird;
We want to avoid any criticism of the way we administer this generous gift.
und sehen darauf, dass es redlich zugehe, nicht allein vor dem Herrn sondern auch vor den Menschen.
For we are taking great care to do what is right, not only in the eyes of the Lord, but also in the eyes of men.
Auch haben wir mit ihnen gesandt unsren Bruder, den wir oft erfunden haben in vielen Stücken, dass er fleißig sei, nun aber viel fleißiger.
And we are sending along with them our brother who has proven his earnestness to us many times and in many ways, and now even more so by his great confidence in you.
Und wir sind großer Zuversicht zu euch, es sei des Titus halben, welcher mein Geselle und Gehilfe unter euch ist, oder unsrer Brüder halben, welche Boten sind der Gemeinden und eine Ehre Christi.
As for Titus, he is my partner and fellow worker among you. As for our brothers, they are messengers of the churches, the glory of Christ.
Erzeiget nun die Beweisung eurer Liebe und unsres Rühmens von euch an diesen auch öffentlich vor den Gemeinden!
In full view of the churches, then, show these men the proof of your love and the reason for our boasting about you.
