Ich dachte aber solches bei mir, dass ich nicht abermals in Traurigkeit zu euch käme.
So I made up my mind not to make another painful visit to you.
Denn, so ich euch traurig mache, wer ist, der mich fröhlich mache, wenn nicht, der da von mir betrübt wird?
For if I grieve you, who is left to cheer me but those whom I have grieved?
Und dasselbe habe ich euch geschrieben, dass ich nicht, wenn ich käme, über die traurig sein müsste, über welche ich mich billig soll freuen; sintemal ich mich des zu euch allen versehe, dass meine Freude euer aller Freude sei.
I wrote as I did so that on my arrival I would not be grieved by those who ought to make me rejoice. I had confidence in all of you, that you would share my joy.
Denn ich schrieb euch in großer Trübsal und Angst des Herzens mit viel Tränen; nicht, dass ihr solltet betrübt werden, sondern auf dass ihr die Liebe erkennet, welche ich habe sonderlich zu euch.
For through many tears I wrote you out of great distress and anguish of heart, not to grieve you but to let you know how much I love you.
So aber jemand eine Betrübnis hat angerichtet, der hat nicht mich betrübt, sondern zum Teil, auf dass ich nicht zu viel sage, euch alle.
Now if anyone has caused grief, he has not grieved me but all of you—to some degree, not to overstate it.
Es ist aber genug, dass derselbe von vielen also gestraft ist,
The punishment imposed on him by the majority is sufficient for him.
dass ihr nun hinfort ihm desto mehr vergebet und ihn tröstet, auf dass er nicht in allzu große Traurigkeit versinke.
So instead, you ought to forgive and comfort him, so that he will not be overwhelmed by excessive sorrow.
Darum ermahne ich euch, dass ihr die Liebe an ihm beweiset.
Therefore I urge you to reaffirm your love for him.
Denn darum habe ich euch auch geschrieben, dass ich erkennte, ob ihr rechtschaffen seid, gehorsam zu sein in allen Stücken.
My purpose in writing you was to see if you would stand the test and be obedient in everything.
Welchem aber ihr etwas vergebet, dem vergebe ich auch. Denn auch ich, so ich etwas vergebe jemand, das vergebe ich um euretwillen an Christi Statt,
If you forgive anyone, I also forgive him. And if I have forgiven anything, I have forgiven it in the presence of Christ for your sake,
auf dass wir nicht übervorteilt werden vom Satan; denn uns ist nicht unbewusst, was er im Sinn hat.
in order that Satan should not outwit us. For we are not unaware of his schemes.
Da ich aber gen Troas kam, zu predigen das Evangelium Christi, und mir eine Tür aufgetan war in dem Herrn,
Now when I went to Troas to preach the gospel of Christ and a door stood open for me in the Lord,
hatte ich keine Ruhe in meinem Geist, da ich Titus, meinen Bruder, nicht fand; sondern ich machte meinen Abschied mit ihnen und fuhr aus nach Mazedonien.
I had no peace in my spirit, because I did not find my brother Titus there. So I said goodbye to them and went on to Macedonia.
Aber Gott sei gedankt, der uns allezeit Sieg gibt in Christo und offenbart den Geruch seiner Erkenntnis durch uns an allen Orten!
But thanks be to God, who always leads us triumphantly as captives in Christ and through us spreads everywhere the fragrance of the knowledge of Him.
Denn wir sind Gott ein guter Geruch Christi unter denen, die selig werden, und unter denen, die verloren werden:
For we are to God the sweet aroma of Christ among those who are being saved and those who are perishing.
diesen ein Geruch des Todes zum Tode, jenen aber ein Geruch des Lebens zum Leben. Und wer ist hierzu tüchtig?
To the one we are an odor that brings death, to the other a fragrance that brings life. And who is qualified for such a task?
Denn wir sind nicht, wie die vielen, die das Wort Gottes verfälschen; sondern als aus Lauterkeit und als aus Gott reden wir vor Gott in Christo.
For we are not like so many others, who peddle the word of God for profit. On the contrary, in Christ we speak before God with sincerity, as men sent from God.
