Καὶ ἔλαβεν ὁ λαὸς τῆς γῆς τὸν Ἰωαχὰζ υἱὸν Ἰωσείου, καὶ ἔχρισαν αὐτὸν καὶ κατέστησαν αὐτὸν εἰς βασιλέα ἀντὶ τοῦ πατρὸς αὐτοῦ.
Then the people of the land took Jehoahaz son of Josiah and made him king in Jerusalem in place of his father.
εἴκοσι καὶ τριῶν ἐτῶν Ἰωαχὰζ ἐν τῷ βασιλεύειν αὐτόν, καί τρίμηνον ἐβασίλευσεν ἐν Ἰερουσαλήμ.
Jehoahaz (note: Hebrew Joahaz, a variant of Jehoahaz; also in verse 4) was twenty-three years old when he became king, and he reigned in Jerusalem three months.
καὶ μετήγαγεν αὐτὸν ὁ βασιλεὺς εἰς Αἴγυπτον, καὶ ἐπέβαλεν φόρον ἐπὶ τὴν γῆν ἑκατὸν τάλαντα ἀργυρίου καὶ τάλαντον χρυσίου.
And the king of Egypt dethroned him in Jerusalem and imposed on Judah a levy of a hundred talents of silver (note: 100 talents is approximately 3.77 tons or 3.42 metric tons of silver.) and a talent of gold (note: A talent is approximately 75.4 pounds or 34.2 kilograms of gold.).
καὶ κατέστησεν Φαραὼ Νεχαὼ τὸν Ἐλιακεὶμ υἱὸν Ἰωσείου βασιλέως Ἰούδα ἀντὶ Ἰωσείου τοῦ πατρὸς αὐτοῦ, καὶ μετέστρεψεν τὸ ὄνομα αὐτοῦ Ἰωακείμ· καὶ τὸν Ἰωαχὰζ ἀδελφὸν αὐτοῦ ἔλαβεν Φαραὼ Νεχαὼ καὶ εἰσήγαγεν αὐτὸν εἰς Αἴγυπτον, καὶ ἀπέθανεν ἐκεῖ
Then Neco king of Egypt made Eliakim brother of Jehoahaz king over Judah and Jerusalem, and he changed Eliakim’s name to Jehoiakim. But Neco took Eliakim’s brother Jehoahaz and carried him off to Egypt.
Ὼν εἴκοσι καὶ πέντε ἐτῶν Ἰωακεὶμ ἐν τῷ βασιλεύειν αὐτόν, καὶ ἕνδεκα ἔτη ἐβασίλευσεν ἐν Ἰερουσαλήμ, καὶ ὄνομα τῆς μητρὸς αὐτοῦ Ζεχωρὰ θυγάτηρ Νηρείου ἐκ Ῥαμὰ. καὶ ἐποίησεν τὸ πονηρὸν ἐναντίον Κυρίου κατὰ πάντα ὅσα ἐποίησαν οἱ πατέρες αὐτοῦ.
Jehoiakim was twenty-five years old when he became king, and he reigned in Jerusalem eleven years. And he did evil in the sight of the LORD his God.
καὶ ἀνέβη ἐπʼ αὐτὸν Ναβουχοδονοσὸρ βασιλεὺς Βαβυλῶνος, καὶ ἔδησεν αὐτὸν ἐν χαλκαῖς πέδαις καὶ ἀπήγαγεν αὐτὸν εἰς Βαβυλῶνα.
Then Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon came up against Jehoiakim and bound him with bronze shackles to take him to Babylon.
καὶ μέρος τῶν σκευῶν οἴκου Κυρίου ἀπήνεγκεν εἰς Βαβυλῶνα, καὶ ἔθηκεν αὐτὰ ἐν τῷ ναῷ αὐτοῦ ἐν Βαβυλῶνι.
Nebuchadnezzar also took to Babylon some of the articles from the house of the LORD, and he put them in his temple (note: Or palace) in Babylon.
καὶ τὰ λοιπὰ τῶν λόγί Ἰωακεὶμ καὶ πάντα ἃ ἐποίησεν, οὐκ ἰδοὺ ταῦτα γεγραμμένα ἐπὶ βιβ. λόγων τῶν ἡμερῶν τοῖς βασιλεῦσιν Ἰούδα; καὶ ἐκοιμήθη Ἰωακεὶμ μετὰ τῶν πατέρων αὐτοῦ, καὶ ἐτάφη ἐν γανοζαὴ μετὰ τῶν πατέρων αὐτοῦ· καὶ ἐβασίλευσεν Ἰεχονίας υἱὸς αὐτοῦ ἀντʼ αὐτοῦ.
As for the rest of the acts of Jehoiakim, the abominations he committed, and all that was found against him, they are indeed written in the Book of the Kings of Israel and Judah. And his son Jehoiachin reigned in his place.
Οκτὼ ἐτῶν Ἰεχονίας ἐν τῷ βασιλεύειν αὐτόν, καὶ τρίμηνον καὶ δέκα ἡμέρας ἐβασίλευσεν ἐν Ἰερουσαλήμ, καὶ ἐποίησεν τὸ πονηρὸν ἐνώπιον Κυρίου.
Jehoiachin was eighteen (note: One Hebrew manuscript, some LXX manuscripts, and Syriac (see also 2 Kings 24:8); most Hebrew manuscripts eight) years old when he became king, and he reigned in Jerusalem three months and ten days. And he did evil in the sight of the LORD.
καὶ ἐπιστρέφοντος τοῦ ἐνιαυτοῦ ἀπέστειλεν ὁ βασιλεὺς Ναβουχοδονοσὸρ καὶ εἰσήνεγκεν αὐτὸν εἰς Βαβυλῶνα μετὰ τῶν σκευῶν τῶν ἐπιθυμητῶν οἴκου Κυρίου· καὶ ἐβασίλευσεν Σεδεκίαν ἀδελφὸν τοῦ πατρὸς αὐτοῦ ἐπὶ Ἰούδαν καὶ Ἰερουσαλήμ.
In the spring, King Nebuchadnezzar summoned Jehoiachin and brought him to Babylon, along with the articles of value from the house of the LORD. And he made Jehoiachin’s relative (note: Or brother or uncle) Zedekiah king over Judah and Jerusalem.
Ἐτῶν εἶκοσι ἑνὸς Σεδεκίας ἐν τῷ βασιλεύειν αὐτόν, καὶ ἕνδεκα ἔτη ἐβασίλευσεν ἐν Ἰερουσαλήμ.
Zedekiah was twenty-one years old when he became king, and he reigned in Jerusalem eleven years.
καὶ ἐποίησεν τὸ πονηρὸν ἐνώπιον Κυρίου θεοῦ αὐτοῦ· οὐκ ἐνετράπη ἀπὸ προσώπου Ἰερεμίου τοῦ προφήτου καὶ ἐκ στόματος Κυρίου,
And he did evil in the sight of the LORD his God and did not humble himself before Jeremiah the prophet, who spoke for the LORD.
ἐν τῷ τὰ πρὸς τὸν βασιλέα Ναβουχοδονοσὸρ ἀθετῆσαι ἃ ὥρκισεν αὐτὸν κατὰ τοῦ θεοῦ, καὶ ἐσκλήρυνεν τὸν τράχηλον αὐτοῦ καὶ τὴν καρδίαν αὐτοῦ κατίσχυσεν τοῦ μὴ ἐπιστρέψαι πρὸς Κύριον θεὸν Ἰσραήλ.
He also rebelled against King Nebuchadnezzar, who had made him swear by God. But Zedekiah stiffened his neck and hardened (note: Or made strong or made courageous) his heart against turning to the LORD, the God of Israel.
καὶ πάντες οἱ ἔνδοξοι Ἰούδα καὶ οἱ ἱερεῖς καὶ ὁ λαὸς τῆς γῆς ἐπλήθυνεν τοῦ ἀθετῆσαι ἀθετήματα βδελυγμάτων ἐθνῶν, καὶ ἐμίαναν τὸν οἶκον Κυρίου τὸν ἐν Ἰερουσαλήμ.
Furthermore, all the leaders of the priests and the people multiplied their unfaithful deeds, following all the abominations of the nations, and they defiled the house of the LORD, which He had consecrated in Jerusalem.
καὶ ἐξαπέστειλεν Κύριος ὁ θεὸς τῶν πατέρων αὐτῶν ἐν χειρί, ὀρθρίζων καὶ ἀποστέλλων τοὺς ἀγγέλους αὐτοῦ, ὅτι ἦν φειδόμενος τοῦ λαοῦ αὐτοῦ καὶ τοῦ ἁγιάσματος αὐτοῦ.
Again and again the LORD, the God of their fathers, sent word to His people through His messengers because He had compassion on them and on His dwelling place.
καὶ ἦσαν μυκτηρίζοντες τοὺς ἀγγέλους αὐτοῦ καὶἐξουδενοῦντες τοὺς λόγους αὐτοῦ καὶ ἐμπαίζοντες ἐν τοῖς προφήταις αὐτοῦ, ἕως ἀνέβη ὁ θυμὸς Κυρίου ἐν τῷ λαῷ αὐτοῦ, ἕως οὐκ ἦν ἴαμα.
But they mocked the messengers of God, despising His words and scoffing at His prophets, until the wrath of the LORD against His people was stirred up beyond remedy.
καὶ ἤγαγεν ἐπʼ αὐτοὺς βασιλέα Χαλδαίων, καὶ ἀπέκτεινεν τοὺς νεανίσκους αὐτῶν ἐν ῥομφαίᾳ ἐν οἴκῳ ἁγιάσματος αὐτοῦ· καὶ οὐκ ἐφείσατο τοῦ Σεδεκίου, καὶ τὰς παρθένους αὐτῶν οὐκ ἠλέησαν, καὶ τοὺς πρεσβυτέρους αὐτῶν ἀπήγαγον· τὰ παντα παρέδωκεν ἐν χερσὶν αὐτῶν.
So He brought up against them the king of the Chaldeans (note: That is, the Babylonians; also clarified in verse 19), who put their young men to the sword in the sanctuary, sparing neither young men nor young women, neither elderly nor infirm. God gave them all into the hand of Nebuchadnezzar,
καὶ πάντα τὰ σκεύη οἴκοίυ θηοῦ τὰ μεγάλα καὶ τὰ μικρὰ καὶ τοὺς θησαυρούς, καὶ πάντας τοῖς θησαυροὺς βασιλέως καὶ μεγιστάναων, καὶ πάντα εἰσήνεγκεν εἰς Βαβυλῶνα.
who carried off everything to Babylon—all the articles of the house of God, both large and small, and the treasures of the house of the LORD and of the king and his officials.
καὶ ἐνέπρησεν τὸν οἶκον Κυρίου, καὶ κατέσκαψεν τὸ τεῖχος Ἰερουσαλήμ, καὶ τὰς βάρεις αὐτῆς ἐνέπρησεν ἐν πυρί, καὶ πᾶν σκεῦος ὡραίον εἰς ἀφανισμόν.
Then the Chaldeans set fire to the house of God and broke down the wall of Jerusalem. They burned down all the palaces and destroyed every article of value.
καὶ ἀπῴκισεν τοὺς καταλοίπους εἰς Βαβυλῶνα, καὶ ἤσαν αὐτῷ καὶ τοῖς υἱοῖς αὐτοῦ εἰς δούλους ἕως βασιλείας Μήδων,
Those who escaped the sword were carried by Nebuchadnezzar into exile in Babylon, and they became servants to him and his sons until the kingdom of Persia came to power.
τοῦ πληραοθῆναι λόγον Κυρίου διὰ στόματος Ἰερεμίου, ἕως τοῦ προσδέξασθαι τὴν γῆν τὰ σάββατα αὐτῆς σαββατίσαι, εῖς συνπλήρωσιν ἐτῶν ἑβδομήκοντα.
So the land enjoyed its Sabbath rest all the days of the desolation, until seventy years were completed, in fulfillment of the word of the LORD spoken through Jeremiah (note: See Jeremiah 25:12 and Jeremiah 29:10.).
Ἔτους πρώτου βασιλέως Περσῶν, μετὰ τὸ πληρωθῆναι ῥῆμα Κυρίου διὰ στόματος Ἰερεμίου, ἐξήγειρεν Κύριος τὸ πνεῦμα Κύρου βασιλέως Περσῶν, καὶ παρήγγειλεν κηρῦξαι ἐν πάσῃ τῇ βασιλείᾳ αὐτοῦ ἐν γραπτῷ λέγων
In the first year of Cyrus king of Persia, to fulfill the word of the LORD spoken through Jeremiah, the LORD stirred the spirit of Cyrus king of Persia to send a proclamation throughout his kingdom and to put it in writing as follows:
Τάδε λέγει Κῦρος βασιλεὺς Χερσῶν πάσαις ταῖς βασιλείαις τῆς γῆς Ἔδαωκέν μοι Κύριος ὁ θεὸς τοῦ οὐρανοῦ, καὶ αὐτὸς ἐνετείλατό μοι οἰκοδομῆσαι οἶκον αὐτῷ ἐν Ἰερουσαλὴμ ἐν τῇ Ἰουδαίᾳ· τίς ἐξ ὑμῶν ἐκ παντὸς τοῦ λαοῦ αὐτοῦ ; ἔσται ὁ θεὸς αὐτοῦ μετʼ αὐτοῦ, καὶ ἀναβήτω.
“This is what Cyrus king of Persia says: ‘The LORD, the God of heaven, who has given me all the kingdoms of the earth, has appointed me to build a house for Him at Jerusalem in Judah. Whoever among you belongs to His people, may the LORD his God be with him, and may he go up.’”
