ΚΑΙ ἐνίσχυσεν Σαλωμὼν υἱὸς Δαυεὶδ ἐπὶ τὴν βασιλείαν αὐτοῦ, καὶ Κύριος ὁ θεὸς αὐτοῦ μετʼ αὐτοῦ καὶ ἐμεγάλυνεν αὐτὸν εἰς ὕψος·
Now Solomon son of David established himself securely over his kingdom, and the LORD his God was with him and highly exalted him.
καὶ εἶπεν Σαλωμὼν πρὸς πάντα Ἰσραήλ, τοῖς χιλιάρχοις καὶ τοῖς ἑκατοντάρχοις καὶ τοῖς κριταῖς καὶ πᾶσιν τοῖς ἄρχουσιν ἐναντίον Ἰσραήλ, τοῖς ἄρχουσι τῶν πατριῶν.
Then Solomon spoke to all Israel, to the commanders of thousands and of hundreds, to the judges, and to every leader in all Israel—the heads of the families.
καὶ ἐπορεύθη Σαλωμὼν καὶ πᾶσα ἡ ἐκκλησία εἰς τὴν ὑψηλὴν τὴν ἐν Γαβαών, οὖ ἐκεῖ ἦν ἡ σκηνὴ τοῦ μαρτυρίου τοῦ θεοῦ ἣν ἐποίησεν Μωυσῆς παῖς Κυρίου ἐν τῇ ἐρήμῳ.
And Solomon and the whole assembly went to the high place at Gibeon because it was the location of God’s Tent of Meeting, which Moses the servant of the LORD had made in the wilderness.
ἀλλὰ κιβωτὸν τοῦ θεοῦ ἀνήνεγκεν Δαυεὶδ ἐκ πόλεως Χάριαθιαρείμ, ὅτι ἡτοίμασεν αὐτῇ σκηνὴν εἰς Ἰερουσαλήμ.
Now David had brought the ark of God from Kiriath-jearim to the place he had prepared for it, because he had pitched a tent for it in Jerusalem.
καὶ τὸ θυσιαστήριον τὸ χαλκοῦν ὁ ἐποίησεν Βεσελεὴλ υἱὸς Οὐρείου υἱοῦ Ὡρ ἐκεῖ ἦν ἔναντι τῆς σκηνῆς Κυρίου· καὶ ἐξεζήτησεν αὐτὸ Σαλωμὼν καὶ ἡ ἐκκλησία,
But the bronze altar made by Bezalel son of Uri, the son of Hur, was in Gibeon before (note: LXX, Vulgate, and some Hebrew manuscripts was there before; MT he placed before) the tabernacle of the LORD. So Solomon and the assembly inquired of Him there.
καὶ ἤνεγκεν ἐκεῖ Σαλωμὼν ἐπὶ τὸ θυσιαστήριον τὸ χαλκοῦν ἐνώπιον Κυρίου τὸ ἐν τῇ σκηνῇ, καὶ ἤνεγκεν ἐπʼ αὐτὸ ὁλοκαύτωσιν χιλίαν.
Solomon offered sacrifices there before the LORD on the bronze altar at the Tent of Meeting, where he offered a thousand burnt offerings.
Ἐν τῇ νυκτὶ ἐκείνῃ ὄφθη ὁ θεὸς τῷ Σαλωμὼν καὶ εἶπεν αὐτῷ Αἶτησαι τί σοι δῶλ.
That night God appeared to Solomon and said, “Ask, and I will give it to you!”
καὶ εἶπεν Σαλωμὼν πρὸς τὸν θεόν ἐποίησας μετὰ Δαυεὶδ τοῦ πατρός μου ἔλεος μέγα, καὶ ἐβασίλευσάς με ἀντʼ αὐτοῦ.
Solomon replied to God: “You have shown much loving devotion (note: Forms of the Hebrew chesed are translated here and in most cases throughout the Scriptures as loving devotion; the range of meaning includes love, goodness, kindness, faithfulness, and mercy, as well as loyalty to a covenant.) to my father David, and You have made me king in his place.
καὶ νῦν, Κύριε ὁ θεός, πιστωθήτω τὸ ὄνομά σου ἐπὶ Δαυεὶδ πατέρα μου, ὅτι σὺ ἐβασίλευσάς με ἐπὶ λαὸν πολὺν ὡς ὁ χνοῦς τῆς γῆς.
Now, O LORD God, let Your promise to my father David be fulfilled. For You have made me king over a people as numerous as the dust of the earth.
νῦν σοφίαν καὶ σύνεσιν δός μοι, καὶ ἐξελεύσομαι ἐνώπιον τοῦ λαοῦ τούτου καὶ εἰσελεύσομαι· ὅτι τίς κρινεῖ τὸν λαόν σου τὸν μέγαν τοῦτον;
Now grant me wisdom and knowledge, so that I may lead this people (note: Literally so that I may go out before this people and come in). For who is able to govern this great people of Yours?”
καὶ εἶπεν ὁ θεὸς πρὸς Σαλωμῶν Ἀνθʼ ὦν ἐγένετο τοῦτο ἐν τῇ καρδίᾳ σου, καὶ οὐκ ᾐτήσω πλοῦτον χρημάτων οὐδὲ δόξαν οὐδὲ τὴν ψυχὴν τῶν ὑπεναντίων, καὶ ἡμέρας πολλὰς οὐκ ᾐτήσαω, καὶ ᾒτησας σεαυτῷ σοφίαν καὶ σύνεσιν ὅπως κρίνῃς τὸν λαόν μου ἐφʼ ὅν ἐβασίλευσά σε ἐπʼ αὐτόν·
God said to Solomon, “Since this was in your heart instead of requesting riches or wealth or honor for yourself or death for your enemies—and since you have not even requested long life but have asked for wisdom and knowledge to govern My people over whom I have made you king—
τὴν σοφίαν καὶ τὴν σύνεσιν δίδωμί σοι, καὶ πλοῦτον καὶ χρήματα καὶ δόξαν δώσω σοι, ὡς οὐκ ἐγενήθη ὅμοιός σοι ἐν τοῖς βασιλεῦσι τοῖς ἔμπροσθέ σου, καὶ μετὰ σέ οὐκ ἔσται οὕτως.
therefore wisdom and knowledge have been granted to you. And I will also give you riches and wealth and honor unlike anything given to the kings before you or after you.”
καὶ ἥλθεν Σαλωμὼν ἐκ Μαβὰ τῆς ἐν Γαβαὼν τῆς ἐν Ἰερουσαλὴμ πρὸ προσώπου σκηνῆς μαρτυρίου, καὶ ἐβασίλευσεν ἐπὶ Ἰσραήλ.
So Solomon went to Jerusalem from the high place in Gibeon, from before the Tent of Meeting, and he reigned over Israel.
Καὶ συνήγαγεν Σαλωμὼν ἄρματα καὶ ἱππεῖς, καὶ ἐγένοντο αὐτῷ χίλια καὶ τετρακόσια ἄρματα καὶ δώδεκα χιλιάδες ἱππέων· καὶ κατέλιπεν αὐτὰ ἐν πόλεσιν τῶν ἁρμάτων, καὶ ὁ λαὸς μετὰ τοῦ βασιλέως ἐν Ἰερουσαλήμ.
Solomon accumulated 1,400 chariots and 12,000 horses (note: Or horsemen or charioteers), which he stationed in the chariot cities and also with him in Jerusalem.
καὶ ἔθηκεν ὁ βασιλεὺς τὸ χρυσίον καὶ τὸ ἀργύριον ἐν Ἰερουσαλὴμ ὡς λίθους, καὶ τὰς κέδρους ἐν τῇ Ἰουδαίᾳ ὡς συκαμίνους τὰς ἐν τῇ πεδινῇ εἰς πλῆθος.
The king made silver and gold as common in Jerusalem as stones, and cedar as abundant as sycamore in the foothills (note: Hebrew Shephelah or lowlands; that is, the western foothills of Judea).
καὶ ἡ ἔξοδος τῶν ἱππέων τῷ Σαλωμὼν ἐξ Αἰγύπτου, καὶ ἡ τιμὴ τῶν ἐμπόρων τοῦ βασιλέως· πορεύεσθαι ἠγόραζον.
Solomon’s horses were imported from Egypt and Kue (note: Probably an area in Cilicia, a province in the southeast of Asia Minor); the royal merchants purchased them from Kue.
καὶ ἐνέβαινον καὶ ἐξῆγον ἐξ Αἰγύπτου ἅρμα ἔν ἑξακοσίων ἀργυρίου, καὶ ἵππον ἑκατὸν καὶ πεντήκοντα· καὶ οὕτως πᾶσιν τοῖς βασιλεῦσιν τῶν Κετταίων καὶ βασιλεῦσιν Συρίας ἐν χερσὶν αὐτῶν ἔφερον.
A chariot could be imported from Egypt for six hundred shekels of silver (note: 600 shekels is approximately 15.1 pounds or 6.8 kilograms of silver.), and a horse for a hundred and fifty (note: 150 shekels is approximately 3.8 pounds or 1.7 kilograms of silver.). Likewise, they exported them to all the kings of the Hittites and to the kings of Aram.
