Im achtzehnten Jahr des Königs Jerobeam ward Abia König in Juda,
In the eighteenth year of Jeroboam’s reign, Abijah (note: Abijah is a variant of Abijam; see 1 Kings 14:31.) became king of Judah,
und regierte drei Jahre zu Jerusalem. Seine Mutter hieß Michaja, eine Tochter Uriels von Gibea. Und es erhob sich ein Streit zwischen Abia und Jerobeam.
and he reigned in Jerusalem three years. His mother’s name was Micaiah (note: Hebrew; most LXX manuscripts and Syriac Maacah; see 2 Chronicles 11:20 and 1 Kings 15:2.) daughter (note: Or granddaughter) of Uriel; she was from Gibeah. And there was war between Abijah and Jeroboam.
Und Abia rüstete sich zum Streit mit vierhunderttausend junger Mannschaft, starke Leute zum Kriege. Jerobeam aber rüstete sich, mit ihm zu streiten mit achthunderttausend junger Mannschaft, starke Leute.
Abijah went into battle with an army of 400,000 chosen men, while Jeroboam drew up in formation against him with 800,000 chosen and mighty men of valor.
Und Abia machte sich auf oben auf den Berg Zemaraim, welcher liegt auf dem Gebirge Ephraim und sprach: Hört mir zu, Jerobeam und ganz Israel!
Then Abijah stood on Mount Zemaraim in the hill country of Ephraim and said, “Hear me, O Jeroboam and all Israel!
Wisset ihr nicht, dass der HErr, der Gott Israels, hat das Königreich zu Israel David gegeben ewiglich, ihm und seinen Söhnen durch einen Salzbund?
Do you not know that the LORD, the God of Israel, has given the kingship of Israel to David and his descendants forever by a covenant of salt (note: That is, a perpetual covenant)?
Aber Jerobeam, der Sohn Nebats, der Knecht Salomos, Davids Sohnes, warf sich auf und ward seinem Herrn abtrünnig.
Yet Jeroboam son of Nebat, a servant of Solomon son of David, rose up and rebelled against his master.
Und haben sich zu ihm geschlagen lose Leute und böse Buben und haben sich gestärkt wider Rehabeam, den Sohn Salomos; denn Rehabeam war jung und eines blöden Herzens, dass er sich vor ihnen nicht wehrte.
Then worthless and wicked men gathered around him to resist Rehoboam son of Solomon when he was young, inexperienced, and unable to resist them.
Nun denkt ihr euch zu setzen wider das Reich des HErrn unter den Söhnen Davids, weil euer ein großer Haufe ist und habt goldene Kälber, die euch Jerobeam zu Göttern gemacht hat.
And now you think you can resist the kingdom of the LORD, which is in the hands of David’s descendants. You are indeed a vast army, and you have with you the golden calves that Jeroboam made for you as gods.
Habt ihr nicht die Priester des HErrn, die Kinder Aaron, und die Leviten ausgestoßen und habt euch eigene Priester gemacht wie die Völker in den Landen? Wer da kommt, seine Hand zu füllen mit einem jungen Farren und sieben Widdern, der wird Priester derer, die nicht Götter sind.
But did you not drive out the priests of the LORD, the sons of Aaron, and the Levites? And did you not make priests for yourselves as do the peoples of other lands? Now whoever comes to consecrate himself with a young bull and seven rams can become a priest of things that are not gods.
Mit uns aber ist der HErr, unser Gott, den wir nicht verlassen, und die Priester, die dem HErrn dienen, die Kinder Aaron, und die Leviten mit ihrem Geschäft,
But as for us, the LORD is our God. We have not forsaken Him; the priests who minister to the LORD are sons of Aaron, and the Levites attend to their duties.
die anzünden dem HErrn alle Morgen Brandopfer und alle Abende, dazu das gute Räuchwerk, und bereitete Brote auf den reinen Tisch, und der goldene Leuchter mit seinen Lampen, die da alle Abende angezündet werden. Denn wir halten die Gebote des HErrn, unsres Gottes; ihr aber habt ihn verlassen.
Every morning and every evening they present burnt offerings and fragrant incense to the LORD. They set out the rows of showbread on the ceremonially clean table, and every evening they light the lamps of the gold lampstand. We are carrying out the requirements of the LORD our God, while you have forsaken Him.
Siehe, mit uns ist an der Spitze Gott und seine Priester und die Halldrommeten, dass man wider euch drommete. Ihr Kinder Israel, streitet nicht wider den HErrn, eurer Väter Gott; denn es wird euch nicht gelingen.
Now behold, God Himself is with us as our head, and His priests with their trumpets sound the battle call against you. O children of Israel, do not fight against the LORD, the God of your fathers, for you will not succeed.”
Aber Jerobeam machte einen Hinterhalt umher, dass er von hinten an sie käme, dass sie vor Juda waren und der Hinterhalt hinter Juda.
Now Jeroboam had sent troops around to ambush from the rear, so that while he was in front of Judah, the ambush was behind them.

When Judah turned and discovered that the battle was both before and behind them, they cried out to the LORD. Then the priests blew the trumpets,
und jedermann in Juda erhob Geschrei. Und da jedermann in Juda schrie, schlug Gott Jerobeam und das ganze Israel vor Abia und Juda.
and the men of Judah raised the battle cry. And when they raised the cry, God routed Jeroboam and all Israel before Abijah and Judah.
Und die Kinder Israel flohen vor Juda, und Gott gab sie in ihre Hände,
So the Israelites fled before Judah, and God delivered them into their hands.
dass Abia mit seinem Volk eine große Schlacht an ihnen tat und fielen aus Israel Erschlagene fünfhunderttausend junger Mannschaft.
Then Abijah and his people struck them with a mighty blow, and 500,000 chosen men of Israel fell slain.
Also wurden die Kinder Israel gedemütigt zu der Zeit; aber die Kinder Juda wurden getrost, denn sie verließen sich auf den HErrn, ihrer Väter Gott.
Thus the Israelites were subdued at that time, and the men of Judah prevailed because they relied on the LORD, the God of their fathers.
Und Abia jagte Jerobeam nach und gewann ihm Städte ab: Beth-El mit seinen Ortschaften, Jesana mit seinen Ortschaften und Ephron mit seinen Ortschaften,
Abijah pursued Jeroboam and captured some cities from him: Bethel, Jeshanah, and Ephron, along with their villages.
dass Jerobeam fürder nicht zu Kräften kam, solange Abia lebte. Und der HErr plagte ihn, dass er starb.
Jeroboam did not again recover his power during the days of Abijah, and the LORD struck him down and he died.
Abia aber ward mächtig, und er nahm vierzig Weiber und zeugte zweiundzwanzig Söhne und sechzehn Töchter.
But Abijah grew strong, married fourteen wives, and became the father of twenty-two sons and sixteen daughters.
Was aber mehr von Abia zu sagen ist und seine Wege und sein Tun, das ist geschrieben in der Historie des Propheten Iddo.
Now the rest of the acts of Abijah, along with his ways and his words, are written in the Treatise (note: Or Exposition or Study) of the Prophet Iddo.
Und Abia entschlief mit seinen Vätern, und sie begruben ihn in der Stadt Davids. Und Asa, sein Sohn, war König an seiner Statt. Zu dessen Zeiten war das Land still zehn Jahre.
